Last of the V12’s
The smooth and powerful V12 engine was a Packard trademark in the 1930’s when Packard was one of the dominant brands in American automotive history. The year 1939 was the last year that the V12 Packard formal limousines were produced. It marked the end of an era in automotive design.
This week a 1939 Packard Twelve Touring Sedan was listed for sale by Streetside Classics in Mesa, Arizona. Not only does it have the 473 ci V12 engine, but it also is a great example of limousine styling with rear coach doors and jump seats. Packard’s slogan was “Built for gentleman, by gentleman” meaning you could expect the finest in coachwork and craftsmanship. All Packard Twelves were custom coachbuilt to the buyer’s personal preferences. This one would be a Model 1708 7-Passenger Formal Sedan.
Vacuum assisted brakes and even a vacuum assisted clutch made for easy operation. So while the Packard Twelve is a big, grand car, it is surprisingly pleasant and easy to drive. That theory is reiterated by Streetside Classics as they say this one is a “nice driver.” The transmission is a 3-speed manual. It was the first year for the column shift. This is one of only 446 1708 models built in 1939. It was restored professionally by Wayne Motors Auto Body in New Jersey. The interior is tan Packard wool with burled walnut dash and trim. It was at one time a best of show winner.
Look through the photos in the ad. For its age, it has a clean interior and engine compartment. The undercarriage shows some surface rust. You should have it inspected before you buy. Click here to watch a walk-around video and hear it run.
This is an opportunity to buy a piece of automotive history. How many of these 1708 model Packards could be left in existence?

Amelia Island Concours
Congratulations are in order for the Best of Show winners at last weekend’s Amelia Island Concours. A 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C (shown here), owned by the Keller Collection, took the Best in Show Concours d’Elegance award. And a 1987 Lotus 49, owned by Chris MacAllister took top honors as Best in Show Concours de Sport. To avoid an expected storm on Sunday, the Concours presentation was moved up a day, so the awards ceremony happened a day early on Saturday, March 8. More than 270 historically significant vehicles were in the competition in 35 classes. (Click here to read the story by Bob Boberg of eClassicAutos.com.) This was the 30th annual celebration of the automobile at the Amelia Island Concours. The Amelia (as it is amicably called) is the second most important Concours in the United States, and one of the most respected car shows in the world. To win at The Amelia is second only to winning at Pebble Beach.

Retro Square Body Chevy ?
There have been rumors about Chevrolet bringing back the Square Body C10’s beginning as early as 2023. Evidently Chevrolet has done surveys that show 75 percent of truck buyers would like to see a retro version of the Square Body pickup trucks back in production. From 1973 until 1987 Chevrolet and GMC produced what have come to be called affectionately as the Square Body pickups with straight lines and classic look. It seems that AI images have been making the circuit on social media depicting what the retro Square Bodies might look like. But actual confirmation from GM has never been officially released by either Chevrolet or GMC. The square body pickups were the third generation of GM C/K pickups which originally appeared in ’73. Given how popular these trucks are it might behove GM to take the idea seriously. Think how much money they cold make if they brought back the Square Body?

1969 Camaro Pace Car
They say this 1969 Camaro RS/SS Indy Pace Car is the real deal. Although most of the dealer replica Indy Pace Cars for 1969 were small block 350 cars, there were a limited number of Pace Cars that were born with a 396 big block. This is one of those cars, according to GearHead Classics, the internet broker that is selling this one for their client. The original 396 ci V8 is no longer in the car but it does have a period correct 396/325 hp replacement to spin the Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission. Professionally done, this frame-off restored classic Camaro has a correct Orange Hounds Tooth Deluxe interior, and Dover White finish. “The stance is just right,” they say.
Continuation CXS Cobra
When Carroll Shelby saw everybody else making money replicating his little Shelby Cobra race cars he decided he should cash in on the trend himself. So he began the Continutation Series Cobras produced under the Shelby American brand name. These cars had actual CXS series Continuation production numbers. So here is a real 1965 Shelby Cobra CXS7019 Continuation Series sports car from Shelby American with a known history. It is one of the special edition 289 FIA cars completed in 2000, and has a known history. After being shipped to Finish Line Motorsports in Las Vegas it was sold to a German car collector for his private collection. When the collection was dissolved, a private party collector from Florida purchased the car and had it restored with a new engine, tranny, paint and more. It now has a Ford V8 producing 450 horses, aluminum flywheel with RAM Powergrip clutch kit, Dart SHP block, QuickFuel carburetor, Tremec TR3550 5-speed manual transmission, Trigo aluminum wheels and knockoffs. There are still just 900 kilometers on the clock. What a find for a true car collector.
“L” Series Dino Ferrari
Of the three series of Dino 246 Ferraris the first, or “L” designated series, is the most desirable. Ferrari only produced 357 examples of the “L” series cars. This is a 1970 Ferrari Dino 246 GT by Scaglietti, a real “L” series car. The story is interesting. This little exotic sports car has been in the same collection for the past 45 years and has remained “off the grid” to the collector community for four decades. Like a ghost, it has just recently reappeared now being offered for sale at Gullwing Motor Cars in New York. Highly desirable to collectors, this Giallo Fly (Yellow) “L” series retains its original color. What a find for a high end collector. It is offered for sale with its Marcel Massini Report to certify its authenticity.

He has detailed photos of it in his Slide Show ad at the link. The ad copy says it has the original drivetrain. And he says it runs and drives as new. When he listed the car he was asking $129,900. But just this week he lowered the price to $97,000. Now that’s what we’re talkin’ about.

1964 Chevy El Camino
There are some really good deals on our website this week. Starting with this 1964 Chevrolet El Camino, here is a classic muscle car/truck that exemplifies the muscle car era. Beverly Hills Car Club has it in their inventory this week. It comes with its California black plate, and is powered by a brand new 383 stroker motor from Blueprint Engines. Along with a Tremec TKX 5-speed, the high-performance drivetrain puts excitement into every mile driven. It has a McCloud hydraulic clutch, and a brand new Champion radiator. Feeding the horses is a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, and it comes with power steering, front-wheel disc brakes, dual exhaust, and 17” American Racing wheels. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $22,750.
1959 Desoto Firedome
They say this 1959 Desoto Firedome 4-Door Sedan is a “clean Southern car.” It is being offered for sale this week at North Shore Classics in Mundelein, Illinois. Be sure to view all the photos at the link, including interior, undercarriage and engine compartment. This is a significant and historic Mopar with the ultimate in tail fin styling from the classic 1950’s. They list the miles as 36,900. You should call them to get a definite reading on whether those are original miles. It has a 383 ci V8 engine and automatic transmission. Click here to review their walk-around inspection video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is $24,900.
1965 Mustang Convertible
It has been a while since we’ve seen a classic Mustang convertible at such a low price point. Once again, it is Beverly Hills Car Club that is bringing you this opportunity to acquire a 1965 Mustng Convertible at a discounted price. This first generation Mustang is finished in Candy Apple red with a Palomino Pony interior. Yes, a Pony interior! It also comes with a power convertible top. That’s the perfect combination for a Mustang collector! Beverly Hills tells us it has an automatic transmission, V8 engine, 2-barrel carburetor, dual exhaust and steel wheels. It has a center console, forward-folding Pony seats and a retro style radio. This one rolled off the assembly line in San Jose, California. They say it is mechanically sound. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday if it lasts that long. Their asking price is $27,500.
2000 Porsche Boxster
How do you buy a low miles Porsche Boxster for less than the market value? Read the Cars-On-Line newsletter DEALS of the DAY, that’s how! Here is a 2000 Porsche Boxster which was just posted for sale by Streetside Classics in their Phoenix store. This little Porsche sports car has a powerful 2.7L H6 fuel injected engine and a 5-speed manual transmission so you’ll always enjoy a sports car experience. What’s more, this little blue Porsche Boxster has leather seats, air conditioning and all the power options you need. Maintenance records come with the car. Streetside Classics tells us the IMS upgrade has been completed. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. Their asking price is only $16,995.
1970 Cadillac Eldorado
Only Cadillac could produce a luxury car this striking with black exterior and contrasting red leather interior. It is being offered for sale this week at Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. Beneath that big long hood is a V8 engine spinning an automatic transmission for a smooth driving experience. 2007 Saturn Sky
Remember when these Saturn Sky convertibles first came out? Who would have thought you could now buy one at such a low price? This week a 2007 Saturn Sky sports convertible was listed by Sovereign Auto Group in Flushing, Michigan. Oh, boy! This one has only 13,000 miles and comes nicely optioned. Need a second car for summer driving? This one would be a great buy. It comes in Midnight Blue with a tan convertible top and two-tone black/tan interior (see photos.) The 2.4 liter DOHC VVT engine provides plenty of power with an automatic 5-speed transmission. It came from the factory with Bilstein mono tube shocks. Click here to view a walk-around video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is only $19,000. That’s a lotta’ car for the money.
2006 Pontiac Solstice
This may be the “sleeper” deal for this week. The Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania just posted this 2006 Pontiac Solstice Convertible for sale at a great price. With only 35,745 actual miles, it is looking sharp in the photos. The Dark Gray metallic paint and big 18” wheels give it an interesting stance. The metal is not perfect but they say it is worth a look because it runs and drives well and everything works on this car. The 2.4 liter 4 cylinder eninge is fuel injected and puts out about 177 horsepower. It is mated to an Aisin 5-speed manual transmission sending power back to 3.90 gears. It has power disc brakes front and rear. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week if it lasts that long. They are asking $13,900.
