One of One Mercury
Sometimes a great muscle car will fly under the radar of the average collector car investor. One such car is the Mercury Cougar XR-7 born with a 428CJ big block engine. In 1969 there were 504 of these big block Cougar XR-7’s built at Mercury. They all had a massive 730 cfm carburetor, a heavy duty radiator, and a larger front sway bar. Each one also got an Eliminator style hood scoop. But many collectors are not even aware that they exist.
When the Classic Auto Mall listed this 1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7 428CJ for sale two weeks ago many of our readers were not aware that it was a big block car unless they read the full page ad. The yellow Cougar came with a 4-speed manual transmission and they tell us it is a numbers matching example verified by its Marti Report. The Marti Report says it is a one of one, the only Cougar XR-7 428CJ with 3.25 gears and Traction-Lock. It is also one of only eight produced in yellow.
The Cougar XR-7 was originally conceived as a racing package which had equipment that you would not get in a Mustang Pony car of that era. The XR-7 would include luxury trim with overhead consoles, toggle switches, leather seats, and wood grained steering wheels.
If you’re a Ford or Mercury collector, this one’s for you. For the uniniated owning this car would be near Holy Grail status.

Newest Auction Posts
Look what showed up in the auction inventory of the Lakeland Collector Car Auction for next week. This rare 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT Pace Car Convertible will be sold to the highest bidder when the auction gets underway, February 7-8, 2025 in Lakeland, Florida. The Cardinal Red pace car is one of a number of significant cars to be added to the auction docket just this week. They only produced a hundred dealer copies of the Cyclone GT Pace Car that year for Mercury dealers to promote. It has been restored and has the 390/335 hp S-Code engine, C6 automatic transmission, power convertible top and a dash-mounted factory-installed tach. We will be watching this auction to see what “blue collar” muscle cars will be selling for as a barometer for the upcoming spring collector car market. Click here to view some of the cars they will be selling next week.
Pre-Purchase Inspections
People always ask us how to buy a car online. It is still a mystery to some collectors who are used to the “old school” way of buying cars, i.e. traveling to inspect it themselves. In the modern day world time is more valuable than money. We always tell buyers they need to concentrate on two things when buying a car online.
1. Have the car inspected before you buy.
2. Use a Bill of Sale to document the transaction.
To help buyers with the first item on our “Must Do” list, we have created the Cars-On-Line Inspection Service with a network of inspectors all over the U.S. and Canada. You can read our inspection sample reports on the COL Inspection Referral Service page on our website. For example, you will see a report that was done on a 1970 Pontiac Trans Am. An Indiana man had been wanting a ’70 Trans Am all his life. When he spotted one for sale in Cedar Rapids, Iowa he ordered an inspection report through our service. He wanted us to help him verify if it could be original to the factory build, and he was worried about the body, bondo, suspension issues, etc. Click here to read the pre-purchase inspection report.
This Weeks Featured Stories
1936 Ford Cabriolet
Cars like this are created for national level car shows and awards competitions. This 1936 Ford Cabriolet is as rare and beautiful as the photos would suggest. The private party seller from Florida tells us this rare Ford convertible is an all-steel California resto rod with the original frame boxed. The car won awards at the LA Roadster Show and Hot August Nights. It has won the Boyd Coddington /Mickey Thompson award and has been invited to many prestigious invitation-only shows such as Boyd Coddington’s and Blackie Gegeian’s. It has a Don Barrington engine, Bowtie 200R 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, Air Ride, and leather interior with a Mercedes cloth top. This is a very special ride.
Hurst SC/Rambler
Most of the Rambler Scrambler’s you see posted on the internet these days are not restored and would not present well at a car show. Here is a 1969 Hurst SC/Rambler in the Type A paint scheme that could make you proud. It is being offered for sale by RK Motors Charlotte where they put each car through a multi-point inspection. They say this one belongs in a serious collection and still has only 42k miles. It is the “baddest Rambler” ever to emerge from Kenosha at the AMC plant. Under the special factory snorkel-scoop hood is an X-code 390/315 hp V8 American Motors engine, with 4-barrel carburetor, heavy duty cooling parts, chrome dress-ups and dual exhaust. It hooks up with a 4-speed manual transmission with heavy-duty clutch, Hurst linkage and a T-handle shifter. It puts all the power to the ground with a Twin-Grip differential with torque links. This little car has some serious muscle.
1970 Buick GS Stage 1
A Pennsylvania collector has known this car for 40 years. Many times when he wanted to buy it it was sold out from under him. This is the elusive Seamist Green 1970 Buick Gran Sport 455 Stage 1 Convertible. A personal friend of his did a high quality frame-off restoration on it. Now he has it for sale at his warehouse. It will come with lots of paperwork, including the all important Protect-O-Plate. He assures that it is all matching numbers including carburetor and distributor. As you might have guessed, this classic Buick muscle car came with lots of options including, AC, power windows, tilt wheel, tach and gauges, and disc brakes. Read the ad copy to get the full story, then have it inspected before you buy to make sure.
2019 Yenko SC Camaro
A seller from Smiths Falls, Ontario is liquidating his “high end” collection of personal sports cars. This is a rare one from that collection. The 2019 Yenko SC Camaro pays homage to the legendary Camaros produced at Yenko Chevrolet by Don Yenko and his crew. It is a brand-new, one-owner collector car with just 128 km (only 80 miles), finished in stunning Hugger Orange paint. It is No. 18 out of just 25 produced. They say the Stage 2 Yenko Camaro delivers “thrilling performance” with its 1,000 hp engine mated to a manual transmission. With so few produced, it was born to be collectible and is a true modern tribute to the original Yenko legacy.
Auctions

We are looking forward to the GAA Classic Winter Auction coming up in Greensboro, North Carolina, February 20-22, 2025. We will be reporting all the action as over 750 vehicles will cross the auction block. GAA’s special auction facility, which they call The Automobile Palace, was expanded to over five acres of display area all indoors. The sea of cars here is endless. Classic car dealers from throughout the Southeast are on hand to buy special cars for their inventories here at the GAA Classic Winter Auction. All of the top collector car shops are represented. But you can join in the bidding as a private party buyer as well. What is amazing about the GAA Classic Winter Auction is the number of vehicles offered at No Reserve. Here are some examples.
1941 Lincoln Convertible
One of the important vintage classic cars to be offered at this year’s GAA Classic Winter Auction will be a 1941 Lincoln Continental Convertible. The classic Lincoln is being offered at No Reserve, and will cross the auction block on Friday, February 21. With an original Tobacco interior, this V12 roadster is said to have just 60k actual miles. See dozens of detailed photos at the link.
1948 MG TC Roadster
Some significant classic sports cars will be offered at this year’s GAA Classic Winter Auction in Greensboro. This 1948 MG TC Roadster is a prime example. They say the frame-off restored two-seater sports car is a National AACA Senior Award winner. It is an AACA Certified Competition Race Vehicle with 19-inch knockoff wheels and leather interior. It has been in the same collection for 50 years. It will be offered at No Reserve.
2022 Bronco Big Bend
Although the new retro Ford Broncos are priced pretty affordably for a new car offering, these special editions are offered at a premium. For instance, there is a 2022 Ford Bronco Big Bend offered at No Reserve during the Saturday sale at the GAA Classic Winter Auction in Greensboro next month. It has the Twin-Turbocharged 2.7L Ecoboost V6 engine and locking front and rear differentials. How much do you think it will sell for?

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1940 Zephyr Convertible
An historic car in any sense of the term, this 1940 Lincoln Zephyr Convertible represents Ford’s peak of success during the Art Deco era of design. With waterfall grilles, long hoods and short rear decks, the European influence was integrated into a new American look. This one is being offered for sale by Gullwing Motor Cars. They say it has been in long term storage and would be an easy cosmetic restoration.
The following are just some of the cars available in the Project Car Section this week:
1935 Ford Deluxe Cabriolet, Gullwing Motor Cars, NY
1959 BMW 503 Coupe, Gullwing Motor Cars, NY

1966 Blown Nova
This one is definitely worth taking a look at. A private party hot rodder from Lake Havazu, Arizona just dropped the price on his 1966 Chevy Blown Nova after being on the site for well over a year. He was asking $42,000 for a Nova with a 355 roller blown 671 Weiand blower boosting well over 600 horses. He says it runs consistent. His price is now just $36,500. Now that’s a lotta’ car for the money. Don’t forget to have it inspected before you buy. But hurry!

1968 Camaro Z/28 Tribute
A good looking custom creation in its own right, here is a 1968 Camaro Z/28 tribute built with a 496 ci big block engine and wearing a brand new paint job. It is a rowdy street machine with a 4-inch cowl hood, 18-inch Foose wheels, and custom LED halo headlights and polished brightwork. The big engine is fed by a Holley 850.
The following are more recently listed Muscle Car Clones:

Deals of the Day
1963 Mercury S55
In the early 1960’s Mercury was pining to become a muscle car maker like its big brother Ford Motor Company. They had cars such as this 1963 Mercury Monterey S55 which was a great performer despite its luxury package weight and size. This one, in Rangoon Red, has head turning design items such as the electonic Breezeway rear window. It is offered for sale this week at Streetside Classics in Atlanta. The big block 390 engine combines with a 3-speed automatic transmission to provide excellent acceleration. With the coil spring front suspension and sway bar, it feels like a muscle car and the dual exhaust just complements that appeal. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is only $21,995.
1960 Lloyd LT600
We had to look this one up. We have never seen one before. This is a 1960 Lloyd LT600, produced in Germany. It is a microcar sized mini bus or could be the early ancestor of the mini van. This one is at the Classic Auto Mall this week. These vehicles were actually very popular in the early 1950’s. Lloyd produced nearly 20 models, all two cylinder driven and consisting of everything from panel vans to estate car and even limousines. They tell us this micro bus runs as it was designed to do with limited performance by design. They note that it would make an excellent parade car. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. They are asking $19,000.
1972 MGB Roadster
The price is certainly right on this little British sports car two-seater. It is a 1972 MGB Roadster, a tried and true British import that runs well although they tell us it has a few flaws. It is another great find at the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania this week. They say it starts up nice and runs smoothly. However they noted an oil leak and some of the lights don’t work. (Read the ad for more info.) The 1798cc 4 banger under the hood looks nice and clean and has been rebuilt with a polished and ribbed aluminum valve cover and black engine block. The transmission is a 4-speed manual with overdrive. You should have it inspected to get more info. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is only $14,000.
1981 Corvette T-Tops
Many of us Baby Boomers consider the last of the Stingray designs as what a Corvette really is. That would include this 1981 Corvette Coupe with the tinted see-through T-Tops and high performance 350 5.7L engine. This one is available at Muscle Cars For Sale in Ft Myers, Florida. Mia will show you around in the video. Click here to take a test ride with Mia and hear it run. They say it was tuned up with new plugs, and oil. Note the beautiful Red Carmine seats and sharp looking interior. And she says the tires are new. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. Their asking price is $19,900.
1980 Monza 2+2 Spyder
During the time that Chevrolet made the Monza sub compact sized economy car few people would have thought of it as a sports car. Yet they did make a Z29 Spyder package for the Monza. So this 1980 Chevrolet Monza 2+2 Spyder is actually quite rare, according to The Throttlestop, a high end classic car restoration shop in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. It came from the factory with a 3.8 liter V6 engine that was developed by Buick and used in the Grand National. Click here to watch a walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. Their asking price is $11,900.
1977 Dodge Aspen
The Dodge Aspen has a very reliable unitary front end, better than a Mustang II, according to many old time hot rodders. But to see a 1977 Dodge Aspen in nice enough condition to collect is unusual today. That’s why Unique Classic Cars in Minnesota listed this one for sale here. Finished in Russet Sunfire paint, this 2-owner Mopar has a 225ci Slant 6 under the hood with a 3-speed auto transmission. They say the paint has some imperfections and shows some staining spots. They say the car has 66k actual miles. Click here to watch a video inspection and find out more about the paint quality. This one will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is only $13,900.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
