Show Quality Custom
The street rod culture, as indexed by the top nationally known car show venues, has evolved over the years to include classic customs and the coveted “old school” customs. It used to be that the top show cars were built in the owners back yard or small shop. But today custom show cars are all built at big name hot rod shops with wealthy clientele. That’s why the cost to build one today starts with six figures and goes up from there.
This week a private party collector from Tennessee listed his old school 1956 Ford F100 Big Window Custom Pickup for sale. The story of how this classic custom was built is an example of how today’s custom car hobby has become an industry onto itself. This build began as a clean, un-hit, completely rust free factory big window custom cab 1956 F100 in factory Meadow Mist green. The build was consigned to Murray Kustom Rods in Fort Worth, Texas with Heath Murray in charge. They logged 350 hours on this custom creation. The aesthetic goal was to keep it looking as Ford original as possible, yet use the best aftermarket equipment for modern day hot rods.
The old school custom was lowered on Posies leafsprings in back, Sid’s dropped axle and tie rods up front and new shocks front and back. It was upgraded with power steering, Wilwood 4-piston brakes all around with Wilwood master cylinder, and a custom built Moser 9″ Street/Strip posi rear end. A blueprinted 347 ci engine provides the horsepower as a TCI Ford AOD automatic with a TCI torque converter pulls the gears. They used Classic Instrument gauges and a Lokar shifter. It has a hidden Bluetooth stereo under the seat. The custom leather interior was done by noted Western artist Cody Hixon.
You can get the full impact of the build when you watch this interesting walk-around video provided by the seller. See rare 1956 factory accessories such as front two hooks, flying bird hood ornament, passenger side spotlight, seatbelts w/retainers as you would find them in the 1956 Ford accessories catalog. Look through all the photos on the ad page. There is so much detail to note on this truck. It is a virtuoso example of how an old school custom should be built.

Classic Car News This Week
Iola 2024
Be sure to check out Car Show Calendar today to plan your trip to some of the biggest national level shows in the country. We will see you at the Iola Car Show coming up July 11-13, 2024 in tiny Iola, Wisconsin, home to the headquarters of Old Cars Weekly news and Krause Publications. There in the backwoods of Wisconsin you’ll find one of the world’s largest car shows. Years ago Krause Publications bought out five to seven farm properties on the outskirts of Iola, Wisconsin to put on the massive Iola Car Show and Swap Meet, the only big car show of its kind in the Mid-West, a giant parts swap on a massive scale. Over 4,000 swap spaces on the grounds and they expect over 2,500 show cars. You can read all about it in our Cars Show Calendar today. This is one of COL’s favorite car shows of all time.
Trans Am Inspection
People always ask us how to buy a car online. It is still a mystery to some collectors who are used to the “old school” way of buying cars, i.e. traveling to inspect it themselves. In the modern day world time is more valuable than money. We always tell buyers they need to concentrate on two things they must do when buying a car online.
1. Have the car inspected before you buy.
2. Use a Bill of Sale to document the transaction.
To help buyers with the first item on our “Must Do” list, we have created the Cars-On-Line Inspection Service with a network of inspectors all over the U.S. and Canada. You can read our inspection sample reports on the COL Inspection Referral Service page on our website. For example, you will see a report that was done on a 1970 Pontiac Trans Am. An Indiana man had been wanting a ’70 Trans Am all his life. When he spotted one for sale in Cedar Rapids, Iowa he ordered an inspection report through our service. He wanted us to help him verify if it could be original to the factory build, and he was worried about the body, bondo, suspension issues, etc. You can read the report here. For the most part this car was a strong runner and in better shape than most of the cars we are asked to look at. Our report calmed his concerns and verified that this car was worth his time to research further.
This Weeks Featured Stories
1933 LaSalle Rumble Coupe
A private party seller from Auburn, Georgia says this 1933 Cadillac LaSalle Rumble Seat Coupe is the actual car that was on display at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago. The vintage LaSalle looks great and the seller says it was running when it went into long term storage. But the new owner will need to give it extensive service to make it the show car it deserves to be. He says this car still has only 34,238 miles on it which he believes to be actual. It looks as though it has an 8 cylinder Flathead engine and was equipped with a golf club compartment (see photo.) This is one you should have inspected before you buy. But what a historically significant find.
1970 Chevelle SS LS6
Muscle car fans will thrill to see this 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 454 monster which instigated the muscle car wars for automotive manufacturers that year. This car was Chevrolet’s answer to the Mopar Hemi cars. Sold new at L.G. Maxton Sales in Angola, Indiana in 1970, this big block Chevelle LS6 was the recipient of a comprehensive frame off restoration, completed in 2023. They estimate that if you were to restore it today, a restoration to this extent would cost over $150,000. This one is that nice. The exterior is dressed in its factory Code 48 Forest Green with D88 hood and deck stripes, hood pins, and, of course, the functional special ducted cowl Induction hood. In the engine compartment rests a LS6 spec’d 454 ci engine boasting an 11:0 compression ratio, a Winters aluminum intake manifold and a Holley 4-barrel carburetor with electric choke. The transmission is an M22 Rock Crusher 4-speed. Mmmm, Mmmmm, Mmmmm. Be sure to watch the walk-around video on this one.
1947 Buick Super Convertible
A whole lot of time and love was invested in this 1947 Buick Super Convertible being offered for sale at Vanguard Motor Sales in Michigan this week. This is a restored to original, show quality ride. Watch Greg’s walk-around video and test drive report. This is a very detailed inspection video so be sure to review it. And, yes, this classic Buick does have the Buick Fireball Straight 8 motor. (Hot rodders swear the Straight 8 couldn’t be beat on the street.) Wait till you see this paint job up close. Listen to the engine and see the power top go down. Then cruise along the boulevard in Plymouth, Michigan with the Buick 3-speed manual transmission. Greg will show you the whole bottom of the car and you can see how clean it is underneath.
K-Code Mustang Convertible
This is the second consecutive week in a row that a K-Code Mustang GT convertible has been listed for sale. (See last week’s newsletter.) That never happens. A 1966 Mustang K-Code GT Convertible like this is hard to find. What sets this one apart from the rest is the ever popular Emberglo paint, offered by Ford in 1966. It is a one-year only color that came out in ’66. It was also the first year that Ford decided to paint their engines Corporate Blue. This engine is a rare one that was developed for Carroll Shelby’s special edition Mustangs. The K-Code motor had solid lifters, big bore cylinders and heavy-duty connecting rods with flat-top pistons and a cast iron crankshaft. It was purpose built for racing back in the day. So this rare ’66 GT convertible has been rotisserie restored with a Parchment Pony interior and Rally pack gauges. This is just the way you want your K-Code to be. It doesn’t get any better than this.
Auctions
We are fast approaching the summer edition of the GAA Classic Auction to be held July 25-27, 2024 in Greensboro, North Carolina. It is one of those summer time events that you mark on your calendar. It’s that important. Collectors from all around the country will be watching the event online or in person. Already the lineup of cars is building. We were especially impressed with their selection of muscle cars this year. Here are some of the cars we spotted in their auction inventory.
1929 Graham Paige
A great example of the kind of pre-war classic you can expect to find at the GAA Classic Summer Auction is this 1929 Graham Paige Model 615. After the Graham Brothers parted ways with the Dodge Brothers, they began making quality motorcars such as this. In Bright red with light gray leather interior, it is the product of a complete restoration. It was originally sold out West. It has a 224 ci inline 6 cylinder engine with wood spoke wheels and wide whitewall tires. A 3-speed manual transmission turns the driveshaft. Look at the photos of the interior. So clean. It will cross the auction block when the GAA Classic Summer Auction begins on Thursday.
1958 Plymouth Fury Convertible
Most people think the 1958 Plymouth Fury only came as a hardtop, i.e. Christine from the movie of the same name. Yet, here is a special order 1958 Plymouth Fury Convertible with the Fury “L” package. It is one of only a few produced with the”L” package and a very few in triple black. What a find! It will be offered for sale in three weeks at the GAA Classic Summer Auction in Greensboro, North Carolina, July 25-27, 2024. This car will cross the auction block on “prime time” Saturday, July 27. The Fury V8 is fed by two 4-barrel carburetors, and it has power brakes and a Suregrip 3.54 rear differential. It has had a complete restoration finished in the original Deep Jet Black with Gold anodized side accents. That gives it a beautiful and unique look. It also has the push button Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission. What a historic reminder of the classic 1950’s.
1970 Pontiac GTO Judge
This 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge in a rarely seen Bermuda Blue original color was one of the most popular ads on our website this week. Some 82 interested buyers clicked on this car to get the info for the upcoming GAA Classic Summer Auction in Greensboro, NC. It is one of only 425 judge hardtops produced with Ram Air III and an M21 manual transmission that year. It has a code WS 400 engine and comes with PHS documentation. It was frame off restored to its current condition. It comes with Safe-T-Track rear axle, power front disc brakes Rally gauges and tach. The selection of muscle cars at this year’s summer auction has never been better.

1971 Camaro Split Bumper
A real interesting pro street 1971 Camaro Split Bumper custom inspection video was done this week by West Port Auto Center in Fenton, Missouri. Watch the video and you’ll find out it comes with ice cold air and Dakota Digital dash. You’ll hear it rumble with the built and updated LS engine with Fitech fuel injection pushing 500 hp. Then take it for a ride as the mild mannered Camaro turns into a beast on the street.

Collector Cars with Low Miles
1980 Volvo 262C
Here is one you won’t see very often. Volvo designed a beautiful luxury car they called the 262C, a successor to the 264 model. As a special edition saloon, it was actually built for Volvo by Bertone in Turin, Italy from 1977 until 1981. They only built 1,200 a year and about 1,000 were sold here in the U.S. each year. To Volvo, this saloon represented the pinnacle of their automotive success at a time when they were one of the most esteemed auto manufacturers in the world. This 1980 Volvo 262C Bertone is now a collector car, so few of them seem to exist. This one is being offered for sale by its private owner, a collector from Auburn, Georgia. He says it still has less than 16,000 original miles. Just out of long term storage, it has recently been serviced. He says the luxurious leather interior is in excellent condition.
Here are more recent Low Miles additions:
1978 Corvette, Mershons, OH, 7,940 actual miles

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1931 LaSalle 345
A sweet looking 1931 Cadillac LaSalle 345 Coupe was just posted for sale by a private party seller from Auburn, Georgia. He has had the car in storage for 10 years, and currently it doesn’t run. This might be an easy project to get running for the right buyer. The seller is sure that it needs a new battery, fuel tank drained and cleaned, fuel lines cleaned or replaced, carburetor cleaned or rebuilt, fluids flushed and replaced as well as new tires. Look how clean it is underneath.
The following are just some of the cars available in the Project Car Section this week:

Price Reduced
1932 Ford Vicky
A Tennessee collector had his “All Henry Ford steel” 1932 Ford Vicky street rod on sale for a pretty hefty price tag when it first was listed. While the street rod market is full of fiberglass hot rods which have diluted the values, the original all steel Fords are still at a premium. This one has a crate ZZ4 and comes with Vintage air and heat. It has even won many trophies. But just this week the seller said drop the price to $69,500. Now it’s getting interesting.

This is a reminder of what a Mopar muscle car is all about. Check out the walk-around video on the ad page.

You will want to check out this 1963 Pontiac Bonneville 2-Door Hardtop being offered for sale by a private party seller from Grafton, Wisconsin. The price is very affordable. This classic Pontiac comes with a 389 4-barrel backed by a TH400 automatic transmission. The seller says it has a very nice, clean body that appears to have all its original paint. He says the original 389 was freshened up with all new gaskets, .030 pistons/rings and bearings. Rear main was upgraded to a one piece seal from Tin Indian. It has a lot of new parts including a new drive shaft and a hi torque mini starter from Butler performance. It will be our featured DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. His asking price is only $16,500. 1940 Ford Sedan Deluxe
Collectors love the look of the Ford made in 1940. The tear drop headlight treatments and waterfall grille combine with the sloping rear design of the sedan deluxe cars. Add to that the art deco influenced interiors, and you have to accept that Ford did it right. An original style 1940 Ford Sedan Deluxe was just posted for sale this week. The Florida seller says it was restored about eight years ago. The Washington blue Ford comes with a rebuilt Flathead V8 with dual exhaust with Ford script exhaust tips. The seller says it was restored as close to factory original as possible. It has the Ford Deluxe hubcops and trim. He says “Almost everything is like new” on this car. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. His asking price is affordable at $28,750.
1971 Cadillac Sedan DeVille
Every Cadillac was born to be a collector car. You might stretch it to say that Cadillac is the Gold Standard of the collector car hobby (although that label has already been claimed by Corvette.) Yet, it is true that every Cadillac has a story that is built around the luxury car mytique. This 1971 Cadillac Sedan DeVille was just posted by Streetside Classics in Phoenix. The car stands in its original Dutchess Gold color as one of the biggest Cadillacs ever built by GM. Riding on 15” steel wheels adorned with iconic Cadillac hubcaps and wrapped in 225/75R15 tires, it stands as a testament to Cadillac’s unwavering commitment to excellence. Because thy have it priced at a discount to the market, it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. They are only asking $11,995.
1973 VW Type 3 Fastback
As suburban executives began to change their lifestyle needs in the 1970’s, the Yuppie crowd began to want Volkswagens in their driveways. One of the popular models was the fastback because it had the bigger trunk in the front, perfect as a grocery getter. This week, Streetside Phoenix listed this 1973 VW Type 3 Fastback for sale. It is not only a rare find today, but it shows in the photos as being in nice condition. For a sporty compact car, it had a performance based 1600cc fuel injected flat-four cylinder engine. It even had bucket seats. They say it has a crisp shifting manual transmission. This car featured independent suspension at both ends. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. They are only asking $14,995 for this rare VW.
1980 Camaro Z28
A few years back everyone was buying up late 1970’s and early 1980’s Camaro Z28’s because the ‘69’s were becoming so collectible that they figured to corner the market on late year Z’s. So far that has seemed a little premature. Prices haven’t climbed the way those opportunists had planned. But there is no doubt the Camaro Z28’s are a good investment. Here is one that you can still get for cheap. It is a 1980 Camaro Z28 being offered for sale by a collector in Wisconsin. He tells us this is an original Arizona car with no rust. It has Vintage heat and air, and he says it now has a new interior, new steering, new custom exhaust and new tires. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday next week because the price is a discount to the average value. He is only asking $13,000.
1989 Jeep Wrangler
Jeeps have always been a top choice of rugged outdoorists. But more recently they are working their way into the mainstream because they are becoming “suburban cool.” Here is proof. This 1989 Jeep Wrangler YJ comes with a custom Rough Country 1 ½” lift kit, new springs with “grease-able” spring shackles, new exhaust with catalytic converter, updated heavy duty front and rear bumper, and a complete Bikini top with side curtains. What could be cooler? It is being offered for sale at Midwest Car Exchange in the Chicago area. They say it has Bluetooth and KC lights. It is powered by a “well maintained” 4.2L inline 6 cylinder engine. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is just $15,900.
1997 Jaguar XK8
Remember when Jaguar came out with the XK8 roadster? We all thought it would be the next great exotic car and have the impact that the XKE had in the early ‘60s. And while the XK8 fell far short of that effect, they still are a cool sports car to own and drive. Today you can pick one up for some summer fun at a deep discount to the market. This 1997 Jaguar XK8 Convertible in Carnival Red Mica paint and beige top and interior is a nicely priced sports car for having only 44k original miles. It is being offered for sale by Classical Gas Motors in Texas. The 32-valve 4.0L V8 has plenty of power and it transfers that power with a 5-speed manual transmission. They say the interior is well maintained. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week if it lasts that long. Their asking price is only $9,995. Hurry on this one!
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
