To The Highest Bidder
Yesterday a beautiful classic 1950’s convertible was listed in our Buick Section that is so rare and hard-to-find that we had to show it to you here. This is a 1954 Buick Roadmaster Series 75C Convertible, one of only 52 documented in the Buick Registry. The current owners have cherished it for the past 32 years winning many awards. They have now entered it into the inventory of the last big collector car auction of the year, the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction in Youngsville, North Carolina, December 1-2, 2023.
You will have a chance to bid on this 1954 Buick Roadmaster Series 75C Convertible in December. But for now you can see 60 beautiful photos of the car at the link. The current owners have won the AACA Senior and Senior Grand National First Prize Award with this elegant car. What immediately catches your eye is the premium factory-correct Series 75 red leather interior. It also has correct Artic White paint and shows only 98,251 miles (although the title is mileage exempt.) The awards, paperwork and receipts for the extensive 8-year restoration are all included in the sale.
They made 3,305 Series 75C convertibles in 1954, but only 52 are currently known to exist. That makes this beautiful Buick so incredibly rare. It comes with Dynaflow automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows, 2-way power bench seat, power convertible top, heater/defroster, Selectronic AM radio, power antenna, Buick tissue box, and Kelsey Hayes wire wheels with wide whitewall tires. Most Expensive Ferrari Ever
Only a select group of bidders were allowed through the doors at RM Sotheby’s Marquee Week Sale of Modern and Contemporary Art. Some bidders were in the room, some were waiting at their phones to place bids on a legendary piece of Ferrari history, the one-and-only factory-raced 1962 Series I Ferrari 250 GTO. Beause it was raced by Scuderia Ferrari this chassis numbere 3765 is of singular importance in the collector car world. It was the only car auctioned off that day and it emerged as the highest priced Ferrari ever to be sold at public auction. The sale price, as announced by RM Sotheby’s, was $51.7 million inclusive of fees and commissions. It is now part of the ethos which surrounds the world of art and automobiles.
Most Expensive Car Ever
The Ferrari story above brings up the question. “What was the most expensive car ever sold in the collector car market?” Back in 2022 the most expensive car ever sold was a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR which was sold for charity out of the Mercedes-Benz factory collection. The race car was known as the “Uhlenhaut Coupe” because Mercedes executive Rudi Uhlenhaut drove it to work everyday in Stuttgart, Germany. It was the racing version of the Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing. In fact, it is the sister car to the 300 SLR in which Sir Stirling Moss won the Mille Miglia. The car sold in May of 2022 for 135 million euros (about $143 million in U.S. dollars.) 1909 Maxwell Model A
In the early days of automotive history the Maxwell was known as one of the most desirable and reliable cars of the day. This 1909 Maxwell Model A with the surrey top is the earliest Maxwell we have ever seen. It is being offered for sale today by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. Finished in red with a black interior, the vintage beauty is a testament to the golden era of automotive craftsmanship when a new progressive America was being forged. The California antique car has a four-spoke steering wheel, hand crank, and many extra parts which come with. Although this one has been sitting a few years, and currently not running, it is a splendid opportunity for the right buyer to unlock its potential. Which is to say … the price is right.
McLaren SLR
Inspired by the 1954 and 1955 Mercedes-Benz SLR (see story above about the Most Expensive Car Ever), Mercedes and McLaren cooperated in building an SLR McLaren limited edition tribute from 2003 until 2010. Their plan was to build 500 of these cars per year, but that total was only reached one year, in 2005. By 2008 Mercedes announced the end of production. That year only 106 SLR’s were produced. Each car sold for about half-a-million dollars apiece. This week one of these revered McLaren SLR’s, a 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster, was listed for sale in the COL Exotic Car Section by Primo Classics International. It has a supercharged 5.5L V8 producing 617 horsepower, and transfering that power through a 5-speed transmission. The color is Silver Laurite with a red Silver Arrow interior and burgundy soft top. They say it has only travelled 3,763 miles in its lifetime. These limited production Mercedes McLarens are eminently collectible.
Auctions
This is it … the last big collector car auction of the year 2023. We are all in. This is the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction, held December 1-2, 2023, and it may be the best one of the year for many of our readers. The Raleigh Classic has become the number one venue for original, unrestored, low mileage collector and specialty cars. Many of these cars are one-owner or one-family owned vehicles since new. There is no other collector car auction that has this reputation. Our readers know that the Raleigh Auction is one of those “hidden gems” of the collector car hobby. It is where some of the finest collections in the Southeastern U.S. bring their cars to “trim the herd.” Here is a quick preview of some of the cars we will be watching in two weeks.
Baywatch Beach Cruiser
This 1996 Special Construction beach buggy called the Thunder Ranch Riot is one of 15 built for the TV series Baywatch that was driven by series star David Hasselhoff. After the series ended Hasselhoff raced these exotic Volkswagen chassis vehicles in road rallies. The powertrain on this special build is a 1776 cc dual carburetor set up with 4 speed transmission. It will be one of the “star cars” offered for sale at the Raleigh Classic Auction, December 1-2, 2023 in Youngsville, North Carolina in two weeks.
Super Low Miles
This 1969 Camaro RS/SS has attained “Legend” status from Vintage Certification. It is completely unrestored and has only 15,542 actual miles. With a Turbo-Fire 350 V8 it comes with original factory air conditioning and a console with bucket seats. Note the Rally wheels. This is the type of low miles treasure you expect to find when you come to the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction, December 1-2, 2023 in Youngsville, NC.
1959 Desoto Adventurer
Top-of-the-line for DeSoto, the 1959 Desoto Adventurer was the feature car for Chrysler’s marquee division following World War II, and from ’56-’60, the Adventurer was Desoto’s flagship offering … with only 602 hardtops produced in ’59. This classic car comes in black with gold trim, emblems, trunk strips, dual antennas, mirrors and turbine-style wheel covers were all standard on this model. It will be offered to the highest bidder at the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction, December 1-2, 2023.

1970 Pontiac GTO Convertible
As if it wasn’t already awesome in its Baha Gold finish, this 1970 Pontiac GTO Convertible just got a little more interesting. The private party seller says it is the product of a frame-off restoration with a complete drivetrain rebuild. He says everything was replaced front to rear. When he first listed this beauty he was asking $84,000. But just today the price was dropped to $74,000. Can you restore one for that price?

1980 Corvette
A lot of the later Baby Boomers think of this later stage Stingray as the proto-typical Corvette. This is the famous 1980 Corvette Stingray body style that speaks to you as a classic Corvette. This one is being offered today by Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. They say it needs a little TLC, but what a find. It has the 5.7L V8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering,and air conditioning (but it needs to be recharged.) Altogether it might be your chance to own an iconic Corvette at a great price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because the askiing price is only $14,000.
1964 Chevrolet Corvair
Everybody loves the story of the Chevrolet Corvair and how it was unfairly belittled by Ralph Nader in the 1970’s. But today there are cult groups of admirers who cherish the little eonomy minded sports cars. This 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Convertible was rotisserie restored and still has only 31k miles on it, according to WeBe Autos in New York. With a flat 6 air cooled motor rated at 110 horsepower, this one has been converted to a 12-volt system. And it has the great sounding Monza dual exhaust. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $12,495.
1948 Dodge B1B Pickup
Once again this week we see Country Classic Cars dominating the DEALS of the DAY category in our newsletter. Where do they come up with all these bargain priced cars and trucks. Here is a 1948 Dodge B1B Pickup truck, a true classic with great colors. It is powered by an inline L-head six-cylinder engine, a full 217 cubic inches good for 95 hp driving a floor shift 3-speed manual transmission. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy. But hurry. They have it “sale priced” for the holiday. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. They are only asking $16,900.
2006 Mustang GT Convertible
Here is a 2006 Mustang GT Premium Convertible which is all updated and turn key ready to enjoy. It has a cool look with black top and black exterior and the blacked out headlights. The private party seller says it has a great sound with a C&L axle back exhaust. It also has been upgraded with JVC Apple play/android screen with backup camera and forward camera screens. This is the right car at the right price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. I think you will agree that this is a lotta’ car for the money. They are asking $12,900.
2001 Porsche Boxster S
If you’ve always wanted to own a Porsche Boxster here is your chance. A 2001 Porsche Boxster S was listed this week by Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. Wow, is this a good price. They say it has a good body, new paint, original interior, good canvas top, power steering, power brakes, 4 wheel disc brakes, drilled and slotted rotors, a 6 cylinder motor and automatic transmission. It even has cold air conditioning, and power windows and locks. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $8,500.
1986 Pontiac Fiero GT
This 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT was just posted for sale at Cassandra’s Motorsports in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. They do not have their description posted for it so you’ll have to let the photos do the talking. It looks to be a clean car. It has the V6 motor with overhead cam 12 valve heads, a performance motor. You will have to have it inspected to find out how it drives out. It is a 4-speed manual car so you want to find out if the transmission is strong. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. Their asking price is $17,9995.
1989 GMC Suburban
Have you noticed how hard it is to find a nice old Suburban 4-wheel drive these days? They say this 1989 GMC Suburban 1500 SLE was just acquired out of the Pacific Northwest. It is being offered for sale at 4-Wheel Classics in Michigan. They specialize in 4-wheel trucks and Sport Utilities. They say it is really clean and shows like it was well maintained by its previous owners. The repaint looks good. Click this link to view a walk-around video and hear it run.
