Handoff to Studebaker
It was a time when small automakers could emerge and make it big. In the period between 1909 and 1912, a small automotive manufacturer called E-M-F moved into second place behind only Ford to make 26,827 vehicles in 1911. That was the year they built three purpose built race cars to compete in the Tiedeman Cup competition in Savannah, George.
It was a surprise to find a 1911 E-M-F 30 Two Seat Racer in our Cars-On-Line Race Car section this week. This is one of the cars which E-M-F built at the factory to compete in the Tiedeman Cup race in 1911. And E-M-F surely got its money’s worth out of that race. The E-M-F 30 racers finished first, second and third that year, and broke a world record. The one you see displayed here was raced as No. 35. It is being offered for sale by its private party owner out of Cincinnati, Ohio. He says this race car bears the VIN number of one of the three factory built racers for the Tiedeman Cup race. It was restored in 2018 and comes fully documented. This is one very rare two-seater race car.
Since the restoration the owner has won awards at concours shows. He has raced it at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in SVRC competition (see photos above.) It was even entered in the Gordon Bennet Rally in England.
In 1910 Studebaker began absorbing E-M-F and this was one of the final years E-M-F produced the Model 30 under its name. It later became the Studebaker Model 30.
The current owner says it starts easily and is extremely durable and reliable. Unfortunately, he says he does not have the time or resources to show and campaign this historic race car as it deserves. This is an opportunity for a collector of a different type to not only show and enjoy owning an historically significant classic car, but to actually participate in sanctioned nostalgia race events. Now that is total emersion in your hobby.

Deals of the Day
1963 Mercury Comet S-22
In the early ’60s Ford Motor Company was producing the forerunners to the Pony car era with the Ford Falcon and the Mercury Comet S-22. Here is a rare example of the 1963 Mercury Comet S-22 Convertible Sportster, with bucket seats and a “sassy” design. The private party seller says it has a great running 289 ci V8 with 2 barrel, 4-speed manual transmission and a 9” differential. This car is a high performance sports car and he says it “runs great!” It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because the asking price is $23,800.
1955 Dodge Royal Lancer
This one is truly rare. It is a 1955 Dodge Royal Lancer, the top-of-the-line Mopar from Dodge that year. The tutone paint scheme on this one is iconic. It is being offered for sale at Unique Specialty & Classics out of Mankato, Minnesota. They just got this one in and do not have the description posted for it yet. But we had to show it to you now because we don’t expect it will be available for very long. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday, if it lasts that long. Their asking price is $28,900.
1980 Mercedes-Benz 280SL
Among all of the SL (Sports Luxury) Mercedes-Benz sports cars produced over the years, the 280SL is probably the one that gets the most respect, and is one of the best to invest in as a collector car. It was with some surprise today that we saw this 1980 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Roadster being advertised at such an affordable price. It is being offered for sale by Streetside Classics in Mesa, Arizona. As always, you should have it inspected before you buy. But hurry! This one will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their price: $16,995.
1977 Ford F100
Don’t overlook this 1977 Ford F100 Pickup because of its patina’d finish. They say it runs great. It is being offered for sale by Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. They know a good truck when they see one. Dressed in a two-tone red and black over a red interior, the truck is powered by a V8 engine mated to an automatic transmission. It just came in and they don’t have the description on their website yet. But don’t wait. You can have it inspected. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. They are asking $17,900.
1974 Porsche 914 2.0
Porsche has always had a “poor man’s” version, base level sports car that was more affordable at a lower price. In the early 1970’s it was the 914 model. Here is a 1974 Porsche 914 2.0 with the more desirable engine variant and the Karmann body. It is being offered for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. It comes with a manual transmission, Weber dual carburetors, four-wheel disc brakes, VDO instruments, single exhaust outlet, removable Targa top, retractable headlights, manual-crank windows, a driver-side view mirror, and Hella fog lights. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $14,750.
1982 Buick Riviera
Every collector car has to be vetted according to its condition. A close inspection of this 1982 Buick Riviera would tell you it looks real clean. At first blush it seems to have good panel fitment and remains straight. Only a full inspection by a pre-purchase inspector would tell for sure. It is being offered for sale by Unique Specialty & Classics in Mankato, Minnesota this week. Click this link to review a full walk-around video. It has a 5.0L V8 with an auto with overdrive transmission. Power steering, power brakes, power windows, remote mirrors, new a/c compressor, and A/C. A/C has been converted to R134a and BLOWS COLD! It will be our DEAL of the DAY later in the week. Their asking price is $14,900.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
