Legendary Musclecar
A few cars in automotive history have achieved a folk lure level of notariety that you might call legendary. The 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird is one of those cars. It was what brought Richard Petty back to Plymouth for the 1970 NASCAR season. Those high banked super speedways such as Talladega and Daytona were made for the winged Hemi Superbird. There will never be another quite like it.
It kinda takes your breath away to see it. This week a B5 Corporate Blue 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird was listed for sale by Classical Gas Motors. They are selling this 426 big block car for a client. This car has a known history with only two owners. It is among the rarest muscle cars in existence. Of the 1,935 Superbirds produced, only 135 were ordered with the 426 ci Hemi motor with dual four-barrel carburetors. The owner discloses that it is not the numbers matching Hemi motor which the car came with. But it does have a correct date coded 426 Hemi under the hood. Overhauled and built .20 over, Classical Gas Motors tell us it has just under 10,000 miles on the rebuild. The Superbird also has an 833 4-speed manual transmission. You can read a breakdown of the numbers on the ad page at the link above.
They say this Superbird began its life as a Chrysler Executive car in Texas. The first owner in 1971 was able to obtain it through the Race Drivers Program. In 2010 the Superbird was restored with new sheet metal from the doors back, trunk floor, wheel housings, rear panel, rear quarter panels. It was painted B5 Blue metallaic, and given new interior carpet including sound deadener, seat covers front and rear, headliner, and a new vinyl top.
History tells us that the aero cars, as the winged Mopars were called, would so dominate NASCAR in 1970 that they had to be restricted starting in 1971. Their 0-to-60 time was 4.8 seconds and their times on the Super Speedways set records. Richard Petty won eight NASCAR races with the Hemi Superbird in 1970. And Plymouth won ten more races with other drivers that year.
Classical Gas Motors says here is a chance to own a legend. And you can buy this one at half the price you’d pay at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale.

Classic Car News This Week
Car Show Calendar
We are starting to look ahead to the June Calendar of Events with all the car shows, swap meets and auctions coming up in June, the most active month of the year for car show activities. You can check out our COL Car Show Calendar to bookmark the events that will interest you. We usually have the most important car shows in the U.S. and Canada on our calendar. It is one of the most popular pages on our website during the summer months. We’ll see you at the Back to the 50s Car Show in St Paul, Minnesota, June 23-25, 2023. That is one we never miss, with over 11,000 street rods and classic cars all in one place. It is amazing. They draw over 100,000 people to that event sponsored by the Minnesota Street Rod Associaton, one of the biggest car clubs in the country. Keep our COL Car Show Calendar bookmarked to stay abreast of the collector car events we will be covering.
Trans Am Inspection
People always ask us how to buy a car online. It is still a mystery to some collectors who are used to the “old school” way of buying cars, i.e. traveling to inspect it themselves. In the modern day world time is more valuable than money. We always tell buyers they need to concentrate on two things. 1. Have the car inspected before you buy. 2. Use a Bill of Sale to document the sale.
To help buyers with the first item on our “Must Do” list, we have created the Cars-On-Line Inspection Service with a network of inspectors all over the U.S. and Canada. You can read our inspection sample reports on the COL Inspection Referral Service page on our website. For example, you will see this report that was done on a 1970 Pontiac Trans Am. An Indiana man had been wanting a ’70 Trans Am all his life. When he spotted one for sale in Cedar Rapids, Iowa he ordered an inspection report through our service. He wanted us to help him verify if it could be original to the factory build, and he was worried about the body, bondo, suspension issues, etc. You can read the report here. For the most part this car was a strong runner and in better shape than most of the cars we are asked to look at. Our report calmed his concerns and verified that this car was worth his time to research.

1940 Lincoln Zephyr
It is hard to explain the fascination that street rod builders have with the Lincoln Zephyr. In recent decades some of the most creative and unique custom builds have been done on Zephyr bodies. But wait. What did a bone stock original Lincoln Zephyr look like? Here is a 1940 Lincoln Zephyr Continental Convertible which is being offered for sale at Ellingson Motorcars in Rogers, Minnesota. The rich burgundy red paint and matching burgundy leather interior are stunning to review. See dozens of detailed photos at the link here. Then watch the interesting walk-around video while Scott tells us some of its history. These days it is rare to find one in such stock original shape and in such stunning condition.
Auctions

The Raleigh Classic Car Auction will be coming up in June. Have you seen their auction inventory? Pick out the ones you want to buy this week so you can have them inspected prior to the event, on June 2-3, 2023. There is an interesting lineup of collector cars to cross the auction floor in Youngsville, North Carolina on those days. Our readers know that the Raleigh Auction is one of those “hidden gems” of the collector car hobby. It is where some of the finest collections in the Southeastern U.S. bring their cars to “trim the herd.” Here is a quick preview of some of the cars we will be watching. You will find the link to more auction offerings below.
1969 Cyclone CJ
A very rare and desirable 1969 Mercury Cyclone CJ will be offered for sale at the Raleigh Classic Auction in Youngsville, North Carolina, on Friday June 2, 2023. It is one of only 2,175 ever produced by Mercury in an era when Mercury was outperforming Fords at the track. This one has the 428 Cobra Jet motor rated by the factory at 335 horsepower. It has Select-Shift automatic and 3.50 Traction-Lok rear axle. Note the Sports Appearance Group offered by Mercury that year. Seen here in a Wimbeldon White repaint, it is verified by its Deluxe Marti Report.
Cadillac Convertible
Cadillac lovers are enamored of the 1947 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible for aesthetic reasons. It represents an era when Cadillac was the dominant player in the luxury automobile business. So this ’47 Caddy comes in an attractive color combination of medium blue finish with dark blue leather interior and a cavass convertible top. Look at all the power options on a ‘40s car, including power front windows, power seat, factory push button radio and a rare hydromatic automatic transmission. The odometer indicates the mileage is at 68,829. They believe it to be actual.
Lincoln Town Coupe
Ask any classic car dealer from the Southeastern part of the U.S. about the Raleigh Classic Auction and they will tell you it is the place to go to find really low miles collector cars. A case in point is this 1976 Lincoln Town Coupe which will be crossing the auction floor at the Raleigh Classic Auction in Youngsville, North Carolina on Friday, June 2, 2023. They tell us it is 100 percent original with only 14k actual miles on the car. As you might expect from a luxury Lincoln, it comes fully equipped with every luxury option available back then. It has a premium leather interior and a very handsome vinyl coach roof and rare factory alloy wheels. This is undoubtedly one of the finest super low mileage Lincoln Town Coupes in existence. Would you bid on this classic luxury car?

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1916 Metz Touring
If you’ve always wanted to own a true brass era vintage antique but thought you could never afford one, take heart. Ask yourself, “Could I restore one?” Oh, yeah, that’s a lotta’ work. It is. The advantage of restoring one over buying one already done is that you’ll know everything about it if it needs repair in the future. So here is an interesting one that you could consider. This 1916 Metz Model 25 Touring car is so rare I guarantee it will be the only one you see at a car show. This car came with the first CVT transmission called the Fibre Grip Gearless Transmission. This is the one to own. It does not start but they say it will turn over by hand. Challenge taken?
