Rare Ram Air IV
When an everyday muscle car met up with this 1970 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV at the track it would leave them in its exhaust. You could put a “Bye, Bye!” sign in the back window and know it would be well read. The Ram Air IV GTO was a breed of its own. With only a 400 ci small block motor, the factory hi-lift camshaft and round port heads made it as fast as some of the famous big block cars of its day. Was the secret in those long branch Ram Air IV manifolds? The Ram Air III and the Ram Air IV both made more horsepower than Pontiac’s 455 ci V8.
Specialty Sales Classics in Fairfield, California just listed this iconic Pepper Green 1970 Pontiac GTO with the much sought after Ram Air IV package. To show you how rare this car is, they only made 302 Ram Air IV cars with a 4-speed. This incredible Concours Gold winning classic muscle car features the factory correct Ram Air IV 400 cubic inch V8 motor with the matching Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission, power steering , power disc brakes, a hood mounted tach and Ram Air IV items. Specialty Sales Classics tells us that 95% of all components are factory correct to this car. Find all the factory specs as they are detailed in the ad description at the link above.
Conservatively rated at 370 horsepower, this Ram Air IV GTO would be able to do 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and the quarter mile at 101.5 mph in 13.9 seconds. It has a Hurst factory console shift and Ram Air hood scoops with Pontiac hood-mounted tachometer.
Click here to watch a quick video to hear it start up and rumble. That cam just has a different lopey idle.
This GTO is the product of a multi-year, frame off restoration that was completed in November of 2011 and it has since won Concours Gold Awards for its overall condition. Specialty Sales Classics tells us it comes with excellent documentation.

Internal Combustion Dead?
With all the excitement and attention being placed on electric cars, you would get the impression that the internal combustion engine was dead. Far from it. Actually the electric vehicles are going to have a hard time displacing internal combustion engines, although they may make gas engines extinct. Not only are there upcoming improvements in fuel quality and emission free fuels, but the improvement in valving and combustion efficiency might just make electric cars seem carbon inefficient soon. Click this link to find out more.
This Weeks Featured Stories
1965 Shelby 289 Cobra
Legendary Motorcar Company just got in a real deal 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra beautifully restored in factory original colors with great attention to Concours detail. This one remains in its street driven original condition, never having been prepped to race or modified. Weighing only about 2,000 pounds, the little Cobra could put out 306 horsepower. Legendary Motorcar Company tells us it comes complete with side curtains, soft top, tonneau cover, hammer, jack and owner’s manual. 1965 was the year it all came together for Carroll Shelby and his little Cobra sports car. That is when it won the FIA GT Championship beating Ferrari. This very original car is an incredible piece of Shelby history.
Dodge Dart GTS
Have you noticed that the 1960’s and 1970’s versions of the Dodge Dart and Plymouth Dusters are growing in popularity among Mopar collectors. Darts are flying off our pages at an incredible rate this spring. You might say they are trending in the market. This week Classic Lady Motors in North Carolina listed the top-of-the-line version, a 1969 Dodge Dart GTS. They only produced 1,272 GTS Darts with the big block 383 engine. If you remember the story, Mr Norm’s in Chicago came up with the idea and sold it to Chrysler to shoehorn a 383 big block motor into the Dart GT. Classic Lady Motors tells us this Dart GTS was built May 9, 1969, at the Hamtramck, Michigan plant. Miles are 76,834 total miles, and it appears to have very low additional miles since the car was restored. They say it is a matching numbers car and both the VIN and Data Plate decode will verify its drivetrain and options. This is the one.
2018 Ford GT
Legendary Motorcar Company is one of the premier restoration and resale outlets in North America. They are of particular interest this week because they have just listed some of the most important collector cars trending right now in our market. This 2018 Ford GT is a great example. One of the hardest exotic super cars to acquire right now, these cars sell for astronomical prices at top national collector car auctions. This 2018 version is from the Ford GT Competition Series commemorating Ford wins at the first ever 24 Hours of Daytona in 1966. They only made seven of these Competition Series cars, and Ford barely allowed the public to know about them. They were a well kept secret. They all have the Twin Turbocharged 3.5L/647 HP DOHC 24-Valve EcoBoost engine. They only came with carbon fiber wheels with titanium lugnuts, a titanium Akrapovic exhaust system, carbon fiber bucket seats and full alcantara interior. Things like the stereo system and speakers, cup holders, and storage bins were delete on the Competition Series. The Competition Series was a $70,000 option in 2018. This is one of the rarest production cars ever made.
Auctions

The Raleigh Classic Car Auction will be coming up on June 2-3, 2023. We are watching their auction inventory to see what we need to buy. There is an interesting lineup of collector cars to cross the auction floor in Youngsville, North Carolina on those days. Our readers know that the Raleigh Auction is one of those “hidden gems” of the collector car hobby. It is where some of the finest collections in the Southeastern U.S. bring their cars to “trim the herd.” Here is a quick preview of some of the cars we will be watching. You will find the link to more auction offerings below.
Ford Lightweight
One of the most important early 1960s American performance muscle cars will be offered at the Raleigh Classic Car Auction in Youngsville, NC, June 2-3, 2023. It is a 1963 Ford Galaxie Lightweight. Only 211 of these race-ready Galaxies were produced purpose built for racing. This one has only recorded 16k actual miles on the odometer (most of them in a straight line.) It still has the 425hp 427ci V8, T-10 BorgWarner aluminum transmission, and 4.11 open rear axle. Lightweights are so rare. This one will be one of the stars of the auction.
1960 Cadillac DeVille Convertible
A 1960 Cadillac DeVille Convertible from the famous Glenn Boyd Collection will once again be available for sale at the Raleigh Classic Auction, June 2-3, 2023 in Youngsville, North Carolina. They say it is 100 percent original and has just 60k miles. It is finished in its original factory Olympic White paint with two-tone black and white interior. It is equipped with all popular options of the day including power windows, power steering, power brakes, power seat and factory signal seeking radio.
Camper Truck
There was a time when torsion campers were all the rage. Today we would consider them collectible, if you can find one. Here is a 1997 Ford F250 and Lance Legend Camper which will be offered at the Raleigh Classic Car Auction in Youngsville, NC, June 2-3, 2023. This 1997 F250 XLT Heavy Duty Super Cab, 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel 2X4 was ordered new from Doherty Ford in Forest Grove, Oregon. With so many people looking to take road trips to see the U.S.A., this is the perfect vehicle for today’s real life experience hungry post-covid travelers.

Deals of the Day

1964 Pontiac Catalina
Pontiac’s Catalina model has been one of its most popular cars. Poncho collectors love them. Here is a Catalina which was just posted by Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. The rare 1964 Pontiac Catalina Ventura Sport Coupe is a second generation Catalina. Powered by a clean 389 V8 with a 2 barrel carb, it is mated to a factory 4-speed manual transmission. Can you say muscle car? Click here to view a video walk-around and get up close. You will notice some cosmetic issues, so you should have it inspected before you buy. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $21,500.
1952 Ford Customline
Old school mild customs are becoming more interesting to collectors these days. Here is a 1952 Ford Customline Tudor Sedan which would not normally attract so much attention. It is being offered for sale by Unique Specialty & Classics in Mankato, Minnesota. It is finished in Turquoise paint with Cream top and pinstriping. With rear fender skirts and riding on white walls with chrome wheels it has “the look.” Click this link to watch an interesting inspection video. It will be our Deal of the Day on Sunday. The asking price is $14,500.
1956 Pontiac Chieftain
Here is another great offering from Country Classic Cars on Route 66 in Illinois. This 1956 Pontiac Chieftain just gets better looking every years. What a find. They say it is an excellent cruiser. Although there seems to be some trim missing, it looks to be very stock in appearance. With 87,771 actual miles, they tell us it has new tires, new brakes, new valve cover gaskets, and a new battery. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their price: $21,500.
2007 Saturn Sky
What fun it could be this summer in a pocket rocket like this one. A 2007 Saturn Sky Convertible was listed for sale this week. Must be a “price leader” because we’ve never seen one this cheap before. It is being offered for sale at Country Classic Cars in Illinois. They say it has been well kept with a good body and paint, good original leather interior, canvas top, eco tech 4 cylinder, 5-speed. Click this link to see it in video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. This is a lotta’ car for what they are asking: $9,500. Hurry!
2005 Corvette
This never happens. A 2005 Corvette Coupe is being offered for sale at a discount to the market price. A private party seller wants to sell his late model Corvette Coupe for more than the dealer will give him on a trade-in. So you can buy it now for less than a dealer will sell it to you for. And this one is in the very popular color of Daytona Sunset Orange. It has 63k miles, Heads Up Display, programable seats, 2-tops, rear camera, updated sound system and a clear bra. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $22,500.
1978 Ford Pinto Wagon
Mershons must have taken this 1978 Ford Pinto Wagon in on trade because they usually deal exclusively in Corvettes. It really looks good in the photos. The color code 7W Medium Jade paint is rare to find today. It has the rear fold down seat and luggage rack. It is a rust-free California Pinto with only 51k original miles. It is hard to set a price on these Pinto wagons because there are not a lot of them around. But this one will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. Their asking price is $15,000.
1984 Porsche 944
You wouldn’t think from the photos that this 1984 Porsche 944 still has its original paint. But that’s what the private party owner says is true. He says the original leather interior is excellent as well. It has its original 4-cylinder 2479cc, 143hp motor with 76k original miles and a 5-speed manual transmission. He says it is 100 percent rust free and never seen winters. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $15,500.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
