Mercury Over Achieves
Annoyed that all the big money for racing was being invested in the Ford Motor Company cars, Mercury engineers set out to “over achieve” in producing competition quality performance cars. While Mercury offered three model levels in 1963, at mid-year they came out with a special slantback version of the S-55 series which they called the Marauder. The Bud Moore NASCAR team came over to Mercury and gave the Marauder a legacy. The Mercury Marauder was one of the early favorites among American muscle car enthusiasts.
This week a rare 1963 ½ Mercury Marauder Fastback has come up for sale in our Mercury Muscle Car Section online. It is being offered out of the inventory at P.J.’s Auto World in Clearwater, Florida. Only 2,319 of these aerodynamic fastbacks were produced only available in the second half of 1963. It has the Z Code 390 big block FE V8 engine which was rated from the factory at 300 horsepower, and a 4-barrel carburetor plus dual exhaust. The transmission is the Multi-drive 3-speed automatic, while the rear end is a 3.00. Shown here in Code M Sultana White with black vinyl top and original black bucket seat interior with padded dash and a center console floor shifter, it has power steering and power brakes.
P.J.’s tells us it might be the finest surviving example left in existence. It is believed to have just 70,357 miles. The condition would support that observation. However there is no documentation to that effect. It would be an historic car to own.

Classic Car News This Week
Most Popular Muscle Car?
Our newsletter readers are aware that we endeavered to find out once and for all which car was the Most Popular Muscle Car of all time. We let you, our readers, tell us through a survey poll of the top muscle cars which one should be considered the preeminent American muscle car. Well, the voice of the people has been totalled … and we still don’t know. Why? Because the poll created a tie between the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and the Boss 429 Mustang. They ended up with 13.8 percent of the vote each exactly. So Chevrolet and Ford fans are evenly divided in their loyalty to their brand. The one takeaway that we can hang unto is that the most popular cars are Pony cars. The Pontiac GTO and Dodge Challenger were also tied for third place with 10.3 percent of the vote. You can click on the image to get a full view of the pie chart and read the results. Oh, well. The best laid plans of mice and men ….
RIP “Wild Thing”
When the drivers take the track at the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday evening there will be one big name missing from the field of entries. On Thursday, Kyle Busch’s family released a statement that the two-time NASCAR Champion had been admitted to the hospital with a severe illness. Hours later it was reported that he had passed away at the age of 41. The loss is immeasurable for NASCAR fans. Whether you loved him as his “Rowdy Nation” fans did, or were dismayed by his “Wild Thing” personality and driving style, he was one driver who really knew how to win. His 63 NASCAR Cup wins combined with 102 O‘Reilly Auto Parts wins and 69 NASCAR Truck Series victories makes him the winningest driver in NASCAR history. He won two NASCAR Championships as a driver in 2015 and 2019 for Joe Gibbs Racing in his No 18 M&M’s car. He has been driving for Richard Childress Racing for the last few years. RCR just announced that his No. 8 car will be retired, and that No. 8 will be reserved for his son Brexton upon achieving his rookie year in NASCAR racing.
This Weeks Featured Stories
1941 Dodge Power Wagon
Dodge Power Wagon 4X4’s were created to do the hard work that the military needed to win the war. Over 250,000 WC Dodge trucks were produced during the war years, with many of them sold to civilian buyers for a variety of heavy duty uses. This is a 1941 Dodge Power Wagon which was just listed for sale by Streetside Classics Atlanta. The Forest Green paint seems right for this rugged 4X4. Under the hood roars a 360 ci V8 fed by a single 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor using an Edelbrock intake. The 4-speed manual transmission is what you want in a vehicle like this. And it has front disc brakes and power steering added. The factory style suspension is enhanced with Skyjacker Hydro 7000 shocks. This truck is built to impress. And impress you it will.
’97 Panoz AIR Roadster
In the mold of Carroll Shelby, Dan Panoz began building revolutionary all-aluminum sports roadsters, the first ever designed and built in the U.S. He used a unique aluminum-intensive chassis (called an AIV chassis) of lightweight construction which made them very light. The design incorporated a classic roadster look and latest AIV construction powered by a Ford Performance drivetrain. Collectible Motorcar of Atlanta listed one for sale this week which is of particular interest to collectors because it is the first one produced, serial number 001. This is a 1997 Panoz AIV Roadster. Only 176 AIV Roadsters were produced from 1996 until 2000. This one has the Mustang SVT Cobra all-aluminum 4.6L V8 with big horsepower. With only 2,341 miles on it, it would be a significant addition to any collection.
1967 Iso Grifo GL
A rare and beautiful 1967 Iso Grifo GL sports car by Bertone was just listed at Gullwing Motor Cars out of New York. Only 330 of these exotic sports cars were produced from 1965 until 1969. The limited production Italian grand touring sports car was built to challenge Ferrari and Maserati with a blend of sophisticated Italian design and reliable American V8 power. Designed by famous Italian stylist, Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Grifo is one of the most popular Italian GT’s of its day. This example has been “well loved,” says Gullwing. They say it has excellent paint, chrome and interior, and runs and drives as well as an American Corvette. It still has its original Corvette 327 engine. These cars are highly sought after today.

The powerplant is a 377 ci V8 stroked from a 351 Cleveland big block engine and a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission. It has power steering and air conditioning. How long has it been since you’ve seen a Ford Pinto for sale? (If you are a Gen-Xer or a Millenial you may have never seen one at all.) And it comes with the original build sheet, original paint and original interior, just the way a collector would want it. Cruisin Classics tells us there is no rust and no dings or scrapes anywhere on this car. They do note some minor rock chips. You’ll see in the photos that it has steel wheels with OEM hubcaps, all in good condition. Does this one bring back some memories?

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1965 Pontiac GTO
Sure, this 1965 Pontiac GTO looks a little rough around the edges … but it’s a real GTO! The money is all under the hood! Let your heart be stilled by the sweet exhaust note as you take it on a test drive. It has a 400 ci V8 and 4-speed manual transmission. It is being offered for sale this week at the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania. They note that there is a 4-link in the rear suspension and coil springs in the front. The idea here is that you might want a car that you can drive and enjoy while you are restoring it. If that thought appeals to you this may be your huckleberry.

Price Reduced
1965 Buick Special Convertible
A collector and advertiser from New Mexico listed his 1965 Buick Special Convertible for sale at a very special price. Not a show car, of course, but he says it runs well and has a good top and upholstery. In his description he notes that the car has a rebuilt 350 ci V8 engine and rebuilt transmission with a shift kit. Both the engine and transmission are recent enough to still have very low miles since the rebuild. The photos show some dings and faded paint on the hood and trunk. Obviously it could use some bodywork and paint. But he was only asking $18,500 when he listed it originally. This week, he decided to drop the price. He is now asking only $15,000. This may be the deal you’ve been waiting for.

Muscle Car Clones
Shelby Rent-A-Racer Tribute
The first generation Mustangs that were sent to Shelby American to become Shelby GT350 Hertz editions have a special history. Known as Hertz Rent-A-Racers, these cars hold a special place in pop culture history, and in the hearts of muscle car collectors. So when a 1965 Mustang Fastback showed up in our listings this week decked out in Shelby GT350 black and gold we knew we would have to feature it here. A Hertz GT350 recreation is being offered for sale this week at Flemings Ultimate Garage in Rockville, Maryland. They say it has undergone a professional restoration with period correct red oxide floors, a professionally built 289 ci V8 4-barrel and a close ratio HD 4-speed transmission with correct T-handle shifter. The mirror finish Raven Black with gold Lemans stripes is the signature look, and it has the 9k tach and 140 mph speedometer.

Deals of the Day
1970 Pontiac GTO
A 1970 Pontiac GTO was recently listed by a private party collector from New Hampshire. In his description he says it is a real 242 VIN GTO and comes with Pontiac Historical Society documentation. The Pontiac 350 engine is not original to the car, and it has a Turbo 350 automatic transmission. The GTO has had rear quarters replaced recently, plus new trunk and floor, new dual exhaust and it has factory air conditioning (not currently working.) What you will like about it is that he says it is “a great driver” and “ runs good.” The description continues to indicate that the seats, carpet and headliner are in very good shape. However, he does note that the paint is older and will need touchup. He does not know the real mileage. But it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is only $26,500. For a GTO, that price should make you look.
1929 Durant Model 63
This is a rare find at a very affordable price. A private party collector from San Diego, California just listed his 1929 Durant Model 63 4-Door Sedan for sale. He describe it as an older restoration “that has been modified to make it more driver friendly.” But it is still in its original classic form. It has been converted to a 12V electircal system, has a rebuilt Ford inline 6 cylinder OHV engine with a CA automatic transmission and a Ford Model A floor mounted Granny type gear shift. It also has a Chevrolet S10 rear end. Hydraulic disc brakes on all four wheels gives it a more steady stopping reliability, and an electric fuel pump with a pressure regulator ensures the fuel flow. It even has an electric radiator cooling fan. But the look and feel of the car remain as original. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. His asking price is $16,000.
Anniversary Trans Am
Here is a collectible Pontiac Trans Am that was born to be collectible. I can still remember when the 1994 Pontiac Trans Am 25th Anniversary Edition just came out. This particular one was meant to be a collector car from day one. It was ordered three months ahead of the release date in order to get the glass T-Tops. It was manufactured in Canada and came with the Corvette 5.7 Liter LT-1 V8 engine. It has air conditioning, an automatic transmission and 4-wheel disc brakes. Nicely optioned, you will find power windows and power steering on the inside. They say it actually has all the options avaiable including the leather case for the motor manual, front bra and extra literature. The seller says the handling and sports car appeal are excellent. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday because the price is exceptional for a car with such provenance. The asking price is $18,000. Hurry!
1962 Buick LeSabre
For the early 1960’s Buick was moving away from the fins and chrome of the 1950’s and into a smoother and more elegant formal look. The LeSabre was Buick’s lowest entry level model, giving everyone a taste of Buick comfort and prestige without having to pay the Invicta or Electra price. This black 1962 Buick LeSabre 2-Door Hardtop came with the big Buick Wildcat V8 engine and an automatic transmission. It is being offered for sale through HaggleMe, an internet broker that specializes in helping internet challenged Baby Boomers to sell their classic cars. Although a LeSabre is hard to find in today’s market, back in 1962 they were very popular. Buick actually produced 25,479 2-door hardtop coupes that year. The roofline on the ’62 LeSabre gave it a distinctive almost convertible-like look. Have it inspected before you buy. It would make this one even more rare if it has unusual options or a documentable history. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. Their asking price is only $16,500.
1961 Ford Thunderbird
The 1961 Ford Thunderbird was an aeronautically inspired “Bullet Bird” from the Space Age. Both elegant and performance oriented, it reflected the youthful image of the post war progressive America. Here is an excellent example displayed in Heritage Burgundy finish with a Light Pearl Beige interior. It is offered for sale this week by Rare Rides, a classic car dealer from Statesville, North Carolina. They say it came with luxury features such as power windows, power steering, power brakes and the iconic “swing-away steering column. Performance comes from big block power with the Ford 390 ci V8 engine and a 3-speed automatic tranmsission. Updates include a Kenwood stereo system and added lap belts. It was originally a California car which the seller credits for its excellent condition. Click here to view a walk-around video and hear it run. It has had one repaint and maintains a classic shine. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $18,995.
1978 MGB Roadster
It is rare to find a 1978 MGB Roadster with a matching hardtop and sunroof, but here one is. It has been listed for sale by the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania. It has some updates such as a newer carburetor, timing chain, head gasket, water pump, brake rotors, pads and hoses, etc. The Classic Auto Mall wanted you to know that the black canvas top has all three plastic windows and that they are in nice shape. There is a luggage rack on the deck lid and dual chrome tip out the back. Power comes from an 1800 cc inline 4 cylinder engine fed by a Weber 2-barrel carburetor and producing about 62 horsepower. The transmission is a 4-speed manual with overdrive. Be sure to look through the photos, especially the undercarriage shots. It is a driver, after all. You should have it inspected before you buy, but hurry. This one won’t last long. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is only $10,500.
2008 Saturn Sky Red Line
The Sovereign Auto Group, a used car wholesaler in Michigan, has done it again. They picked up this late model sports car at wholesale and are passing it on at a great price. This is a 2008 Saturn Sky Redline Convertible shown here in Silver Pearl exterior finish and red/black leather interior. Wow! It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0 liter inline 4 cylidner engine creating 260 horsepower. What’s more, it is reported to have just 51,000 miles. It translates power through a 5-speed automatic transmission. The Redline package comes with an upscale gauge cluster and leather seats with Red Line embroidery, Red Line floor mats and more. Lots of options are included, such as Monsoon Premium audio, stereo with CD, cruise control, power windows and locks and rear spoiler. Click here to watch a walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is $15,000.
