Finding Safe Passage
There is a 1969 Dodge Charger Hemi R/T in the Cars-On-Line New Listings this week. It will have all Mopar collectors drooling. This is the ultimate Mopar muscle car. Only one problem. The seller is from Sweden. Does that give you pause? The internet can connect us with people we never had access to before. But how do you complete a transaction overseas?
Our readers know that there are two key things to get right when you are buying a collector car.
1. Have it inspected and appraised before you buy.
2. Use a Bill of Sale or a purchase agreement as a legally binding contract.
This week our readers will see this 1969 Dodge Charger Hemi R/T being sold by a private party seller in Sweden. As the story goes, he brought the car to Sweden and had it restored there. Europeans will pay a much higher price to obtain an American classic muscle car than collectors here in the U.S. That is because they can sell them for as much as five or six times what they pay for them here, especially if they buy a project car. They also have very skilled restoration technicians in Europe. So buying a project car for restoration and exporting it to Europe can be very profitable. That explains why it is in Sweden. But how do you get it back here?
SCL Rotterdam is a company which provides buying and transport services in Europe. They have a 4-and-a-half star rating from the Feedback Company. And there are a number of collector car inspection services in the UK, especially in London. But in many cases to get vehicle inspections done in Europe you have to contact someone in the local area you are buying the car from.
You should always be careful when buying a classic car. That is doubly important when buying from overseas and having to pay the shipping costs to bring it back to the U.S. We will be researching more on this topic in the near future. The U.S. dollar is so strong in Europe that we may see more of our old cars coming home now.

1965 Shelby 289 Cobra
Not a replica or even a continuation series, no, this 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra is the “real deal.” It was just listed for sale by Legendary Motorcar Company, one of the premier classic car dealers in the U.S. and Canada. They say it has been beautifully restored In factory colors, and in concours show quality detail. This was a late production ’65 built for the street. Because of that it has some popular features such as side vents, wider fender flares, rack and pinion steering, Ford electricals, Stewart Warner gauges, and a Ford alternator. They say this one is original and never modified for racing. It has only had two owners in 40 years. They say numbers and stampings are correct.
Chevelle SS LS6
A real quality show piece, this 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 454/450 hp monster muscle car is among the most sought after cars on the planet. Experts such as Jerry MacNeish have certified the car and the documentation to include 2 original build sheets, Protect-o-plate and a binder of history dating back to the Ohio dealership where it was first purchased. The classic muscle car underwent an extensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration which took over eight years. You can imagine the attention to detail that was invested in this LS6.
Studebaker Conestoga
Orlando Classic Cars in Orlando, Florida just got in a really rare 1954 Studebaker Commander Conestoga Wagon, one of only 2,878 ever produced. They are rarer than hens’ teeth today. It has a 232 ci V8 engine and a three-on-a-tree manual transmission. Look at the photos at the link. This car looks excellent. This may be the best example we have ever seen. The Conestoga Wagon was produced only two years, 1954 and 1955 by Studebaker. The name is a tribute to the early enterprises of Studebaker as they produced covered wagons starting in the 1850’s and continuing until the turn of the century. The Studebaker Conestoga wagon was a two-door wagon with a two-piece rear lift gate. It was innovative for its day.

It converts that power through a 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission via a 2400 stall converter with a 10” posi rear end. The engine compartment is worth a look. You might want more photos of the interior which looks pretty nice from what we can see. Be sure to call this guy so you can be the first in line for a shot at this classic muscle car. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. His asking price is $25,000.

Nash collectors will recognize that this is not just any Nash Ambassador, this is the rare 1955 Nash Ambassador Custom with special Farina body. It came from the factory with a Packard V8. And that Coral Pink finish is the original color. The restoration is a little long in the tooth now, but have it inspected. You will be surprised at the quality. The seller says there is “very little rust.” He says he has replaced or rebuilt the brakes, starter, carburetor and the ignition system. “I have also replaced the headliner, carpet with soundproofing and slipcovered the interior. Many extra parts …” It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $14,500.

1968 Chevy El Camino
Many think of Chevrolet’s El Camino as a “Chevelle with a pickup bed.” You can see on this 1968 Chevy El Camino just what they mean. The front valance is all Chevelle. This one has been listed for sale by North Shore Classics in suburban Chicago. It has a 355 ci crate engine with aluminum intake and stainless headers, plus dual exhaust.
