A Changing America
Take a look at our Pierce-Arrow Section on the Cars-On-Line.com website and you will notice how the American automobile was evolving. By 1935 the Pierce-Arrow was to become an elegant touring machine, long known for dependability. It was competing with Packard and Cadillac for the high end car buyer with expensive tastes as the art deco period began to capture the American spirit.
This week the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania listed an elegant Viceroy Maroon 1935 Pierce-Arrow 845 Town Sedan that suggests how automotive tastes had evolved in that period of our history. The story of the Pierce-Arrow spans 37 years from 1901 to 1938. It is estimated that about four percent of all the Pierce-Arrows ever built are still in existence (a testament to their durability.) About 80,000 Pierce-Arrows were produced. And in those years historians believe that Pierce-Arrows were the best cars made in America.
Known for their fender mounted headlights, the Pierce-Arrow was recognized as an innovation leader back in the 1930’s. Pierce-Arrow engineers were instrumental in developing the hyraulic valve lifter so that eight and twelve cylinder engines could evolve. They developed dual valves per cylinder and dual spark plugs per cylinder by 1928. Ignition had become more dependable because of their efforts.
This unique luxury sedan was probably built at the Studebaker plant in South Bend for 1935. Studebaker had acquired control of the Buffalo, New York based automaker in 1928. Under Studebaker, the Pierce-Arrow transitioned to an L-head straight Eight engine. This 845 model has a 386 ci I8 engine moving this big 3-ton luxury car. The Classic Auto Mall tells us that this big beautiful motorcar moves down the road smoothly and brakes well. Once you experience this ride, you may never want to get out of the car again.

Classic Car News This Week
World’s Fastest Car
Move over Tesla, the Rimac Nevera EV is now the fastest EV ever built. In fact, it is the fastest car in the world according to its stats. They say it will go 0-60 in 1.74 seconds. As an exotic super car, this EV was built to prove a point for Mate Rimac (pronounced “ri-mats”), a Croation national and entrepreneur who started Rimac Automobili. His technology is leading the way for his important partners who include Volkswagen, Bugatti and Porsche, among others. Marques Brownlee has had a Rimac built car in his collection and just did a video test drive of the new Rimac Nevera. Click the video window to see what he discovered.
This past week CNBC did a special report on the Rimac Nevera. With four motors, one at each corner, this design is looking more like the way of the future for EV’s. They will make 150 of the Nevera super cars this year. The price tag? $2.4 million each.

1934 Jaguar SS1 Tourer
Gullwing Motor Cars in New York has listed this really interesting 1934 Jaguar SS1 Tourer. It might be the first one you’ve ever seen. They tell us it is an exciting matching numbers find which just came out of a large collection with a Heritage Certificate. It is a CCCA full classic with a very correct older restoration which was likely done in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s. What is remarkable is how it looks so original right down to the patina you would expect. This car is fast … loves to cruise at 55 or 60 on the freeway. Find out more when you contact Gullwing for updated info.
1972 Olds 442 #00001
The first car produced in any model year will always have a special place in the hearts of car collectors. So when Vanguard Motor Sales listed this 1972 Oldsmobile 442 for sale this week we took note. They indicated that this classic muscle car was a pilot car with serial number 00001 on the cowl tag. What a find! They say this car was originally a GM test car. GM pilot cars were manufactured and originally built for testing. Pilot cars like this were never meant to be sold at a dealership, but for some reason this one was. This 442 is finished in beautiful white with black hood stripes and a black vinyl top! Under the hood sits a GM 455 ci Oldsmobile motor with the cowl hood & air cleaner! Power is transferred through a TH400 automatic with a 10-bolt Posi rear end! This car is truly one of a kind!
1958 Edsel Roundup
A rare Edsel station wagon was listed this week. We often see the Edsel Villager wagons and occasionally see an Edsel Bermuda full size wagon. But we have never before seen a 1958 Edsel Roundup 2-Door Wagon like this one which was just posted for sale at Streetside Classics in Phoenix, Arizona. It has the 361 ci V8 engine, a 2-speed automatic and the Ford 9” rear end with dual exhaust. ’58 was the first year for the Roundup wagon and there were less than 1,000 ever produced. ’58 was the only year Edsel produced the 2-door Roundup. This car is in the condition that it is in because someone recognized how rare it was and kept it up.
Rare Pontiac GTO
In 1965 when Pontiac’s GTO was leading the muscle car era with its popularity, Pontiac came out with a one-year only color called Iris Mist. One expert says only two GTO’s were produced in that color. This is one of them. A private party collector in South Carolina just listed his prized 1965 Pontiac GTO with a factory original Iris Mist finish. He says the car is numbers matching with a 389 ci V8 and a 4-barrel. The car has power steering and power brakes. He says it remains rust free and all gauges and instruments function as they should. This car is so special that it was restored by the Pontiac Club president. It is for sale on the Cars-On-Line website today.
Auctions
Only a week away. One of our favorite parts of the always popular Fall Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet is the Carlisle Auction which is held at the Expo Center adjacent to the Carlisle Fairgrounds, September 28-29, 2023. Their inventory is growing every week. Here are a few of the newest additions to their auction lineup.
Hertz Rent-A-Racer
Deep into the auction inventory next Friday afternoon you will see a 1966 Shelby GT350H cross the auction floor at the Fall Carlilsle Auction. Yes, it is a real original Rent-A-Racer delivered to the Hertz Rental agency in Los Angeles. It’s entire life is documented in the Shelby Registry. Carroll Shelby autographed the dash. It has the numbers matching 289 ci V8 and a rare manual 4-speed. This very desirable model has undergone a full nut and bolt restoration. The Carlisle people say there will be “no surprises” with this one.
Ferrari 365 GTC/4
Here is a late consigned surprise entry into this year’s Fall Carlisle Auction next week. Anyone who follows the collector car market knows how these 1970’s Ferraris have become impossible to find. Now here is a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTC/4 with 6 Weber side draft carburetors to feed the V-12 powered classic. It is an elegenat example of a classic sports car done in Pininfarina styling with 4-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. They tell us the odometer shows just 32k miles (title reads “exempt.”) This may be a chance to own a high level collector car as an investment.
Cadillacs at Carlisle
As usual, there will be a huge selection of collector Cadillacs being offered at this year’s Fall Carlisle Auction, September 28-29. This 1968 Cadillac DeVille Convertible is one of the elite feature cars at this auction. You can see some of the photos at this link. Go to the Carlisle Auctions page for the Fall Carlile event and you can search the term Cadillac and find more from all eras. To register to bid at this year’s auction you can follow the same link and click on the Bid link to get registered. The auction will be held next week during the Fall Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1941 Cadillac Fleetwood
Old school Cadillac collectors will tell you that the best year to own is the 1941 model. This 1941 Cadillac Series 60 Special Sedan by Fleetwood is a remarkable find. It has been in storage for an extended period of time so it is a prime candidate for restoration. While a Fleetwood-bodied ’41 may seem “out of reach” for most pocket books today, this one could be your ticket if you can do the work. You will note the flying goddess hood ornament, chrome ring headlights, 2-spoke steering wheel, chrome bumpers with overriders, chrome trim, interior wood trim, rear fender skirts, bench seats and Cadillac branded hubcaps.

Deals of the Day
1976 Camaro LT
The muscle car era had come and gone. Yet there was still an appetite for performance sports cars among younger buyers. This 1976 Camaro Type LT is evidence of that. This car is just a driver, no show car here. But they say it starts quickly and runs smooth. It is being offered for sale at the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania. They say th air even blows cold yet. Although it needs some upkeep, it has a lot of potential as a collector car. You should have it inspected before you buy. You may note that the price is affordable. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $16,000.
1956 Buick Special
Beverly Hills Car Club has another interesting classic custom for sale this week. It is a 1956 Buick Special in non-original paint. This California car is equipped with an automatic transmission on the column, V8 engine, Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, power steering, fender portholes, dual exhaust outlets, and “Buick” lettering across the hood. 1985 Chevy C30 Dually
The Classic Auto Mall also posted a highly desirable 1985 Chevy C30 Dually ready to haul your heavy loads. It was the subject of a custom restoration. The dual rear wheels and power full 350 ci V8 make it a workhorse. Factory flares for the dual rear wheels give this hauler a big rig look. There is plenty of patina in the engine compartment and underneath, so have it inspected before you buy. But hurry! This is a lotta’ truck for the money. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is $26,000.

It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday next week. The asking price is $14,995.
1990 Mazda Miata
Not many little two-seater sports cars can stand up to the durability of the Mazda Miata. Some credit Mazda’s years of race testing as the reason they drive and last so long. Here is a 1990 Mazda Miata MX-5 being offered for sale by Legendary Motors out of Massachusetts. Mazda’s sixteen-valve, twin cam, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine purrs under the hood. It comes with power windows. With just over 24,000 miles, you can imagine how it drives and performs. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. Their asking price is $18,500.
1974 Chevy C10
