Sophisticated Motoring

1941 Lincoln Zephyr Roadster

What is there about the stylish Lincoln Zephyr that so captures the imagination? Custom builders can’t get enough of them. They are always coming up with ways to accentuate the classic lines of these elegant motorcars. Their aerodynamic design and low rake with integrated fenders was a sophisticated look which made European designers envious.

Here is a 1941 Lincoln Zephyr which has been made into a roadster. The Zephyr Roadster was listed for sale by Streetside Classics out of their Nashville location. What we like about it is that it keeps the original body lines and factory design intact. It’s stance is so aggressive that it looks fast just standing still. Today we refer to it as “rolling art.” This one should be in a museum.

When it was converted to be a roadster, the Zephyr was given rounded door tops and a flush rear boot area to straighten the lines. That look blends well with the famous waterfall grille and sleek appearance. Streetside tells us this ’41 Zephyr was once owned by Universal Studios in California. That just adds to the provenance. Be sure to check out the maroon interior in the photos.

Within the last 1,000 miles the 292 ci V12 motor was given a rebuild. It now has triple deuce carburetors and Austin aluminum heads. Supporting all the upgrades is a 12-volt conversion, an alternator and an aluminum radiator.

With this Zephyr you get the distinction of cruising in classic style, and yet with a ride that caresses the road. The experience is priceless. Only in America do we dare improve on the original.

Classic Car News This Week

Charger at No Reserve

Dodge Chargers from the muscle car era are among the most “searched for” cars on the internet. Mopar collectors are always on the lookout for these popular high performance cars. So it really caught our attention when we saw that there was a 1970 Dodge Charger SE up for bids at the GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro, North Carolina next month. Amazingly, it is being offered at No Reserve. I know, right? This one comes from an esteemed private collection, the Jerry Smith Collection. This Special Edition Charger came with factory Gater Grain vinyl interior, power windows, power steering, power brakes and still has its factory fender tag. (You can see it in the photos.) Of course, it has the big 440 Commando motor. Most of this collection will be sold at No Reserve. Click here to find more No Reserve offerings at this special auction, March 30-April 1, 2023.

MG TD Inspection Report

We were asked to do a pre-purchase inspection report on a 1955 MG TD Roadster. The little red British import car was in nice shape compared to many we see. The inspector rated it as a Class 3 condition car. You can read the report here. So our client was able to make a more enlightened decision about purchasing the TD. Classic TD’s peaked in price back about 25 years ago when they were getting six figure prices for No. 1 condition cars. That was before the internet. This one got a high No. 3 condition rating. Read the report to get the appraisal value.

Buying a collector car without a pre-purchase inspection could be a mistake. The difference between a No. 3 condition daily driver and a No. 2 condition near show car can be a matter of tens of $1,000’s of dollars. You can find out more about pre-purchase inspections here at this link.

1965 Maserati Sebring

Way back in 1962, Maserati started offering Lucas indirect fuel injection in their celebrated Sebring model luxury sport coupes. This 1965 Maserati Sebring 3500 GTi has it. But it is very rare to find today. It is being offered for sale this week at Daniel Schmitt & Company’s gallery in St Louis. These rare European grand touring sports cars have been escalating in collector value at a quicker pace than U.S. cars. Click here to view a walk-around video. Because they only made 348 of this model it will continue to hold collector favor. Finished in gorgeous Rosso Cordoba over black leather interior, this rare Maserati was subject to $134,000 in refurbishing and was recently featured in the New England 1000 Rally.

1972 Chevelle SS

Chevelles are so hot these days that they sell almost as fast as they are listed. This week, Southern Motors posted a 1972 Chevelle SS for sale with a really interesting video walk-around on YouTube. Click the video window above to view. They tell us it is a true U Code SS which now has a 454 with a dual feed Holley 4-barrel and Weiand Stealth aluminum intake. Listen to that engine rumble. But move fast for this one. Today they posted that they may already have a buyer.

Deals of the Day

2006 Pontiac Solstice

We couldn’t believe it when we saw this 2006 Pontiac Solstice listed this week. (Get your phone in your hand and ready. This is gonna’ be good.) It was posted for sale by Rich’s Car Corner in Shoreline, Washington. Rich is the man to see for wholesale bargain cars. But this week even he has outdone himself. We put it in the Tuner Section because it has been upgraded with a Hahn 2.4 Turbocharged engine. Check out the photos at the ad link. This is a one-of-a-kind find. The Solstice is a great sports car but was always underpowered. Not this one though. This one is a rocket. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Rich’s asking price is only $9,999.

1918 Ford Model T Roadster

A collector has listed his 1918 Ford Model T Roadster for sale this week. Back in the day you could buy a roadster chassis out of the Sears & Roebuck catalog and build your own “sports car.” This Model T Roadster is fully restored, says the advertiser. Originally from AZ, it now resides in Massachusetts.  It has a manual transmission, and the seller says it is in excellent original condition.  He says the vehicle has always been stored indoors and remains rust free. Look at the photos. The gloss yellow over black interior show very well. He says the paint is “great.” It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. His asking price is $15,500.

1992 Firebird Convertible

We just talked to this seller from South Carolina. He said he took this 1992 Pontiac Firebird Convertible in on a trade, and would normally have resold it, but it was so nice he decided to keep it. Now he’s running out of room and must sell. They didn’t make many that year. It is one of 1,265 manufactured. He says it has an original V8, automatic on console, PW, PS, PB, AC, Tilt wheel. No rust, never damaged, always stored inside. He says the 67,855 miles showing he believes to be accurate. Convertible top he rates as “excellent.” It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. He is asking $19,900, but would listen to offers.

1940 Ford Tudor

This just in! An original classic 1940 Ford Tudor Sedan has been posted for sale by Haggle Me, an internet broker. Interestingly, they say it runs and drives very well. It comes with an original Flathead V8 engine. You should call to investigate more. Does that mean original to the car, or era original? And they say it has a 3-speed manual transmission. (We assume that means its on a column, three-on-a-tree.) They also note that it has very nice paint and interior. Look at the photos and you can verify. But the best way to know is to have a pre-purchase inspection done. You can find out more about pre-purchase inspections on the front page of the Cars-On-Line website. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. The asking price is affordable at $21,500.

1964 Buick Electra 225

Long, elegant and luxurious, the 1964 Buick Electra 225 4-Door Hardtop was a pleasure to drive and own. The same is still true today. This one in Diplomat Blue is being offered for sale at Streetside Classics of Nashville. It has its 445 Wildcat motor which they say is numbers matching. They say the air blows cold and the pillarless hardtop has power windows. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. They are asking $19,995.

1994 Firebird Formula 350

Another rare and desirable sports car was listed by Rich’s Car Corner in Washington state. While they say mileage is unknown on this 1994 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350, they do know that it came with an LT1 350 V8. It has been upgraded and they say this car is very quick. Watch out. If you remember, these cars had the composite body panels to resist dents and rust. But the best part of this offering is the price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is $6,499. Yeah, hurry on this one.

The Jaguar XK8 sports cars have been around for a while now and have not gotten the respect that we reserve for the E-Type Jaguars of old. But they are really cool sports cars. This week a 2001 Jaguar XK8 Convertible was listed for sale by Classic Car Deals, an internet broker. And we couldn’t believe the price! When a significant sports car like this comes up for sale at an affordable price range you take note! In British racing green with beige top and interior, they say this one has always been garage kept. Even with high miles, it is well worth inspecting. Read the full report on the ad page and look at the photos. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week (if it lasts that long.) Their asking price is $11,495. Oh, man. Make an offer and see what happens.

Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:

1976 Oldsmobile 98 Regency$11,614Addison, IL
