1953 Packard Caribbean
If innovation and quality were the hallmarks for the Packard Motor Company, then they may have been its downfall as well. But in 1953, the vaunted Packard was still the best in class with Cadillac, Lincoln and Chrysler trying to immitate its quality ride.
Packard put everything it could muster into its new flagship model, which they called the Caribbean, in 1953. The first year 1953 Packard Caribbean was only available as a convertible. They were betting the whole enchilada on its impact. It had the most extraordinary and highly advanced options of any American automobile of its time. Everyone back in the day loved the full rear wheel cutouts and chrome trim.
This week, a rare 1953 Packard Caribbean Convertible appeared in our Packard Section online. It is being offered for sale at Carolina Muscle Cars in Benson, North Carolina. You see it here in its stunning Matador Maroon metallic exterior finish. As the result of a frame-off restoration back to orignal condition it also has a maroon and white leather interior. (Check out the photos at the link.) Optional equipment includes the celebrated Ultramatic automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes and a power convertible top. All Caribbeans were equipped with a 180 horse, 327-cu.in. Flathead straight Eight.
According to one authority, there may only be about 25 ’53 Caribbeans known to exist. Only 750 were actually built by Packard that year. This one is so nice you would be proud to take her to your next car show.

Classic Car News This Week
Richard Petty Edition Torino Cobra
We spotted something of note for all Ford muscle car collectors this week. One of the featured cars at the GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro, March 31-April 1, is a 1969 Richard Petty Torino GT. In 1969, Ford held a Charlotte 600 Special Sweepstakes as a NASCAR promotion in which the winners would receive one of these 428 ci Cobra Jet Torinos, delivered to their doorstep by Richard Petty himself. Although 111 of these Torinos were built, only five were optioned with the 428 Cobra Jet V8, and this car is one of those five. It is being offered at No Reserve during a two-day special auction sale of the Jerry Smith Collection. It will be offered with a large array of Richard Petty memorabilia (see photos at this link.) Check the Cars-On-Line Car Show Calendar for more info.
This Weeks Featured Stories
1912 Overland
In the early days of American motoring this 1912 Overland Model 59T Touring car would have cost $900. That was an exorbitant amount back then. It cost more than a Cadillac. Yet Overland was the second largest auto manufacturer behind Ford Motor Company. They were extremely popular and reliable. Hence the high cost. It is not often that we would find an antique motorcar like this on the market for sale. It is currently in the inventory at the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. They say the paint is well done, interior pristine, and has wonderful brass appointments. Click through to the ad page to view dozens of detailed photos.

Deals of the Day
1971 Corvette LS5 454
If you are a Corvette enthusiast you might have a preference for the “steel bumper” cars with higher horsepower. But they are pricey, right? Well here is the best of both worlds, a 1971 Corvette LS5 454 big block car in gold paint and having a desirable 4-speed manual transmission. It is being offered for sale at Carroll Street Auto in Manchester, New Hampshire this week at a very affordable price. Now the photo here might fool you so look through the photos on the ad page at the link. They show some considerable “patina” on the passenger side rear. Check it out, or have a pre-purchase inspection to know more. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is only $26,900.
1936 Chevrolet Tudor
You really have to look at these photos of a 1936 Chevrolet 2-Door Sedan that was just listed here on Cars-On-Line.com by Haggle Me, an internet broker. The photos show a car that looks very clean and complete. Only a pre-purchase inspection can tell for sure, but it is rare to find a Chevy of this vintage that is so clean and detailed and complete. They tell us it is very nice, all original with a 6 cylinder engine, and 3-speed manual transmission on the floor. They note “excellent paint and interior.” They say it runs and drives well, too. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is only $19,900.
1946 Ford Super Deluxe
As they say, “1946 never looked so good.” That’s because this 1946 Ford Super Deluxe Tudor Coupe is an amalgam of many features from other cars and other makes. In mild custom resto mod form, this hot rod classic custom is being offered for sale this week at the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. (Check out all the photos at the link.) For instance it has power steering and power brakes. They say it starts and runs well. You will notice items which need attention. And it looks like the hood needs an adjustment. They say the windshield wipers are not working. For the right buyer who wants to tinker, this could be your huckleberry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is only $15,900. (And, if you want a second pair of eyes on it, have it inspected before you buy.)
1935 Dodge DU Sedan
Coming out of an estate, this 1935 Dodge Model DU Sedan looks very nice and clean. It is on consignment at the Classic Auto Mall. They say the paint looks to be original with some rust and dents and dings acquired over the years. Note the suicide rear doors. So we are confident that this one can be called a survivor. Most important to consider is that there aren’t many of these around anymore. Own a piece of history. Our contact at the Classic Auto Mall says it starts right up and drives well. He notes there might be a wheel bearing going out. That should be attended to. Have a pre-purchase inspection done on this one to know more. But hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. The asking price is $21,000.
1966 Lincoln Continental
This 1966 Lincoln Continental is a little bit more of a project as you can see from the photos. It is being offered for sale by Classic Car Deals, an internet broker representing their client in Utah. They say it runs and drives “great” and the body is in good condition. You can see some rust (might be surface rust) starting in the usual places. But they say the car is complete. We always recommend that you have a pre-purchase inspection on any car you want to buy. Do it before you buy. So here is the link to the COL Inspection Service. This Lincoln will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $14,495.
1949 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe
Here is another surpise this week from the Classic Auto Mall. They listed this 1949 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe coupe for sale. We had to look twice because it is not often that we see one in this clean a condition. The owner says they drove it all over the country and even into Canada, a 4k trip, without problem. You really have to see the photos to believe how nice it looks. What a sharp Chevy. The inline six was rebuilt in 2008. It has a 3-speed manual transmission as it should. The brakes need to be redone so it cannot be test driven. A pre-purchase inspection might tell you more. But the price is right. They are asking $9,900.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
1976 Lincoln Mark IV | $10,000 | Morgantown, PA |
1977 Corvette | $16,500 | Morgantown, PA |
1985 Camaro | $17,500 | Nashville, TN |
1996 Camaro Z28 | $13,000 | Morgantown, PA |
1995 Ford Crown Victoria | $13,500 | Morgantown, PA |
Cars for under $10,000:
1980 Toyota Celica Liftback | $7,999 | Shoreline, WA |
1989 Chevrolet Caprice | $7,000 | Morgantown, PA |
