Most Important C1
Out of all the C1 first generation Corvettes produced the one that collectors are most interested in is the 1957 Corvette Fuelie Convertible. Well restored examples bring big money. After all, only 1,040 fuelie Corvettes were produced in ’57. But hundreds of those were 250 horsepower units. Of those, only 713 had the solid lifter 579B 283/283 engine. One horsepower for every cubic inch of combustion was a game changer back then.
A rare 1957 Corvette Fuelie Convertible was listed for sale this week by Legendary Motorcar Company, one of the pre-eminent restoration shops in the world. These guys deal in high end restorations all the time. This one checks all the right boxes. It is Onyx black with silver coves and a black convertible top. And, yes, it does have the 283/283 V8 engine with Rochester fuel injection. They say the original fuel injection unit (Part No. 7014800) is still mounted on the engine. Look at that impeccable engine bay (see photos on the ad page at the link.) Finned valve covers, great detailing and correct hardware everywhere. Also new for 1957 was the 4-speed manual transmisssion. Of course, it has the Wonderbar radio, dual exhaust, spinner wheel covers and whitewall tires. This car is stunning.
Legendary Motorcar Company tells us it has been the subject of a frame off restoration. You can tell from the photos, can’t you? The red vinyl interior is a nice contrasting look. The fuel-injected Corvette was way ahead of its time. Many performance sports cars did not get fuel injection until the 1970’s. For Corvette collectors, the name “Fuelie” carries a lot of respect. What was brand new for ’57 is now cherished among collectors today.

Classic Car News This Week
What’s Hot Now
There is somewhat of a renaissance in values on European sports cars these days. It seems to be happening mostly on the Continent and in the U.K. With high end restorations reaching nose bleed valuations, European collectors are eyeing up popular original cars that remain unrestored. Because prices are so high on “over-restored” collectibles buyers are taking a pass at top European sales. In the meantime, “preservation” and “survivor” class originals now draw more attention than the polished entries. This was evidenced by what was happening at Italy’s Lake Como Villa d’Este, Oxfordshire’s Salon Privé, and London’s Hampton Court, the top tier concours d’elegance in Europe. All three concours have increased their “preservation” and “survivor” class entries in the past few years. A dusty old 1960’s Ferrari might beat out a shiny restored model because of originality. Genuinely original documented examples such as pre-1973 Porsche 911, early Ferrari, Mercedes 300SL or Lancia Aurelia are commanding more money in the market because originality cannot be recreated. The 1972 Porsche 911T you see here from Beverly Hills Car Club is a great example. It can still be purchased at the level of an unrestored classic. We are not talking about “barn finds” now. Those were popular for a while, but the economics of restoring a car these days is prohibitive. No, what is popular now is finding serviceable survivor class cars that have not been restored and remain at lower price points than fully restored cars.

Lincoln Model K Convertible
A documented and historically accurate 1939 Lincoln Model K Convertible Sedan by LeBaron is exceptionally rare today. It is being offered for sale this week at Ellingson Motorcars in Rogers, Minnesota. The Zephyr Blue Lincoln was meant to be chauffeur driven. The Series 413-B was distinguished from the standard 413-A by its 3-piece crank-operated divider window that allowed rear-seated passengers to section off the their cabin from the chauffeur up front for additional privacy. They say there were only three of the Model 413-B convertible sedans built by Lebaron. This is one of them. Because of its history and provenance, this big V-12 Lincoln is eligible for Classic Car Club of America recognition and participation in its events, including the CARavans. The car comes with extensive documentation, according to Ellingson’s information. Click here to watch an interesting video history of this car.
Chevelle SS LS6 454
A beautiful Fathom Blue 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 454/450 hp monster big block car was just posted for sale by Legendary Motorcar Company this week. The LS6 big block Chevelle is the “king of the muscle cars” coming out of GM in 1970. They tell us it is numbers matching with an 800 cfm Holley 4-barrel carburetor on an aluminum manifold. Yes, this is a solid lifter, forged aluminum high compression engine, with rectangular port heads and four bolt mains. They tell us this one was fully restored. Of course, it has the legendary Muncie “Rock Crusher” M22 4-speed transmission and 4.10 Posi gears out back. It has the Chevelle F41 suspension, power disc brakes and a heavy-duty battery. Having had a complete frame-off restoration, they say the car performs as good as it looks.
Ford Thunderbird E-Bird
The first generation of Ford Thunderbirds are considered highly desirable classic cars, but even among these hot collectibles there is a hierarchy in values. Some of the most valuable T-Birds are the E-Code Thunderbirds produced only in 1957. Here is a 1957 Ford Thunderbird E-Code, the classic American sports car that made its mark as an early high performance model. In ’57 Ford produced a limited number of their popular Ford Thunderbirds with upgraded dual quad 4-barrel 312 ci V8 engines which were designated E-Codes. Thus, to collectors, they became known as E-Birds. Only 1,499 were ever built in ’57. It was a one-year only experiment in first generation Thunderbirds. This Flame Red E-Bird was just listed for sale at Streetside Classics out of their Phoenix location. Click here to watch their walk-around video and hear it run. Beautiful, isn’t it?

1957 Chevrolet 210 Restomod
Sometimes we get jaded by seeing so many custom restomod cars for sale. But here is a 1957 Chevrolet 210 Custom that is worth your time to inspect. Dave, at Southern Motors, gives us a real detailed video inspection here in this video. It is a complete frame-off restored custom in stunning Tuxedo black paint, custom two-tone Charcoal interior, ZZ4 350 ci GM Performance crate engine, Serpentine pulley system, Tremec 5-speed manual transmission, Holley Performancer dual feed 4-barrel, GM aluminum intake, with ceramic headers. Note the custom LED lighting, Painless wiring, Vintage Air, and the chrome and stainless is nice. Dave can’t get over how slick the paint is. The dash has Dakota Digital gauges … really impressive. You have to admit this car was built right.

1990 Buick Reatta Convt
Here is a great opportunity to acquire a truly unique piece of automotive history. This Bright Red 1990 Buick Reatta Convertible was Buick’s experiment with producing a two-seater sports car for the ages. It is a handmade modern sports car with “futuristic” styling for the time with front wheel drive and a luxury minded interior. This is the one you want to own because it still has just 9,901 actual, title verified miles. An opportunity like this does not come along very often. This one is being offered for sale this week at the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania. The tan canvas top is said to be in great shape. They say it looks very clean under the hood with the 3.8 liter Buick fuel injected V6 mated to a 4T60E 4-speed automatic transmission. What a find!

1973 Olds Custom Cruiser
A collector from Arizona is getting serious about selling his prized 1973 Olds Custom Cruiser Wagon with a clamshell tailgate. He wants to sell now, so he dropped the price this week. This is a woodgrain sided 3-seat classic wagon which has been in the same family since 1982. They say it has been gently used for the past 44 years. It still wears its Crystal Green paint with green interior. The seller says the engine runs strong. It passes emissions. He reduced the price to $17,500 in recent months. But this week he told us to drop the price to $9,700. That is a green light if we’ve ever seen one..

Muscle Car Clones
1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda
This Sassy Grass Green 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Tribute was featured in Mopar Muscle magazine. They say it was restored with such great care to make it true to the legendary brand. Note the Shaker hood and black Hemi Billboard. Under the hood roars a legendary 426 HEMI V8, enhanced with dual Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetors feeding the iconic Shaker intake. The tranmission is a 727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic delivering smooth shifts and putting power to the ground through a Dana 60 rear end. The rumbling dual exhaust and four-wheel power disc brakes provide a unique experience. Here is a tribute that lives up to its reputation.

Deals of the Day
1966 Mustang A-Code
A noteworthy 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe is being offered for sale at Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. It is currently at a very affordable price point. The A-Code Mustang has Arcadian Blue paint which is not show quality. You can see from the photos that there are some imperfections and fading. This one would require a pre-purchase inspection to get a better feel for the condition class. But, for the sake of argument, let’s say it is a driver quality No. 3 condition car. The interior has been upgraded with a Pony interior package (very desirable upgrade.) It was a California black plate car with an automatic transmission and front wheel disc brakes, power steering and 15-inch wheels. Note the Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. They also reveal that the title is a California Salvage title. Beverly Hills Car Club tells us it is mechanically sound. So it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is $18,950.
1937 Ford 85 Deluxe
An interesting vintage motorcar is being offered for sale through the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. They do a pretty good job of telling it like it is about this 1937 Ford 85 Deluxe Club Coupe. It would be a good car to take to the next level, because it is more of a project car than a driver. They say it has solid underpinnings although they note a fair amount of surface rust and residual oil on the undercarriage. It still has the 6 volt system and runs a 221 ci Flathead V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor, mated to a 3-speed manual transmission. They disclaim that the the radio, heater blower, odometer, trip odometer, wipers, headlights, and taillights are not working. You would need a pre-purchase inspection to find out what the condition class of this car really is. If it is a low No. 3, the price could be right. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $19,900.
1995 Porsche 968
Here is a classic Porsche that may have a chance to appreciate as it gets older. It is a 1995 Porsche 968 sports car. The 968 was Porsche’s experiment in producing a well balanced sports car at a lower price point. It features the 3.0 liter inline four cylinder engine delivering about 240 hp. Seen here in Guards Red finish with a black interior, it has the 6-speed manual transmission. The 968’s were known for their refined styling, improved performance and everyday driver capability. It has 4-wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, Bosch-branded headlights, VDO instrumentation, a single exhaust outlet, 17-inch alloy wheels, a Pioneer radio, and a trunk-mounted spare tire with jack.Inside it has driver focused ergonomics as part of Porsche’s engineering prowess. At the time, it had the most powerful four-cylinder engine you could buy. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday next week. Their asking price is $18,750.
1995 Mitsubishi Pajero
We are not going to pretend we know a lot about this one. This 1995 Mitsubishi Pajero was just listed for sale by the Classic Auto Mall. They were offered for sale here in the U.S. beginning in 1983 and morphed into a 5-door version in 1991. According to Mitsubishi they sold well and were the forerunner of the Montero in North America. This is a 2.8 liter Turbo Diesel XR-II model showing 75,500 miles (although title is exempted.) If you are looking for an off-road experience much like a Bronco but want something nobody else will have, than this is your huckleberry. The rig sits tall on aftermarket 16-inch Mozzer wheels and LT245/75R16 Wrangler tires as wheel flares add the feeling of width. You should have it inspected because the test drive disclosed some surface rust along the undercarriage. But Classic Auto Mall said none of what they saw was invasive rust. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. The asking price is $14,500.
1985 Pontiac Fiero GT
Low miles cars are the one thing that motivates a true collector. When you can find a low mile collector car you have tapped into a gold mine. Here is a 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT that proves our point. It looks so good in the photos that you have to wonder how it survived all these years in this condition. The obvious reason would be the low miles. The ad says it still has only 29,250 miles on the odometer. It is being offered for sale by HaggleMe, an internet broker selling this car for their client. The seller says he believes those miles to be original however he does not have documentation. One reason to believe the miles is that the 4-speed transmission shifts smoothly with no noise as you go through the gears. Carpets and seats also show little wear. The air conditioning has been converted to freon. He says the air conditioning blows exceptionally cold. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $18,500.
1978 Ford Pinto Wagon
The Ford Pinto is one of the most talked about vehicles ever produced in Detroit. In the 1970’s, the station wagon version of the Pinto became the first defacto suburban family people mover. Every Yuppy family had to have one. It was so popular that Ford thought of it as the vehicle to save Ford. But during the 1970’s Ralph Nader, the automotive safety watchdog, identified a flaw in the design of the fuel tank right behind the rear bumper, a safety hazzard that brought the Pinto experiment to an end. The lawsuits almost bankrupted Ford. Today, you don’t see many of those Pinto Station Wagons aroind. A 1978 Ford Pinto Wagon was just listed for sale by Classic & Collectible Cars of Las Vegas. They say it has a solid West Coast body and “runs and drives great.” The historic significance of the Pinto would make it a great addition to any collection. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is only $16,950.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
| 1978 Dodge Magnum XE | $18,500 | Morgantown, PA |
