Art of Custom Design
The art of custom design is in preserving the original form and enhancing it, without taking away its aesthetic appeal. That’s what is so interesting about custom show cars. They take the original form of the car, smooth out the design and take out the ugly moldings and drip rails, lower the ride height and modernize the mechanical functions. A 1953 Desoto Custom Wagon was recently listed by a private party seller from Illinois. You may remember it from the feature articles written on it in Hot Rod Magazine during the build. (Click here to read more.) It is hard to comprehend the work that was put into this custom station wagon.
As you peruse the Slide Show photos on the ad page, you realize everything was custom fabricated, including the drilled and slotted front and rear disc brake calipers with stainless steel lines and Heidts front end hardware. The custom classic was painted in PPG Tarragon Green and metallic gray paint. Absolutely stunning quality. The underbody is coated with Little Raptor bedliner. The body sits on a custom chassis with Air Ride suspension. The rear tires are 22” with clearance when the vehicle is slammed.
Under the hood is a Chrysler 6.1 Liter Hemi engine with all new custom wiring harness. The triangular 4-link rear suspension holds a Tech 9” rear end housing with a custom cover and 31-spline Moser axles. It has a 360-degree drive line loop welded to the chassis. You have to see this. It is hard to believe all the detail and thought that went into building this incredible wagon.

1936 Packard 1401 Coupe
It strikes you right way that this is the type of car a Hollywood movie star would own back in the day. The yellow 1936 Packard 1401 Series Coupe is a dignified and historic piece. It was just listed for sale by the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. The Classic Auto Mall refers to this color as Arizona Beige. The lilting swan hood ornament and torpedo shaped headlights are bigger than life examples of the ornate elegeance of the early Packard motorcars. Even the 17-inch wire wheels are painted to match with the epic Packard center caps and wide whitewall tires. In back of the long sloping tail is a massive color matched trunk. Sidemounts are covered and color matched as well. The Classic Auto Mall says the car funs out the way it should. Imperfections exist. Read the ad copy for details. There is even a side door to along the fender to store your golf clubs. This is a real piece of Americana.

1934 Ford 3-Window
A private party owner and hot rodder in Utah listed his 1934 Ford 3-Window Coupe for sale last month. Designed by Innovative Street Machines, it uses an all fiberglass Street Beasts body. You can see dozens of up close photos in the Slide Show ad at the link. This is as close to a show quality build as you would want for a car you are going to drive and show. The paint is amazing. And it has a polished ZZ4 engine with Holley 650 Brawler and Serpentine belt system. The Billet aluminum independent front suspension is backed up with a Heidts rear end and Ford 9”. The front end also has Heidt’s rack and pinion. Of course, it has all disc brakes, instrument panel by Dakota, heating and air conditioning by Vintage Air. Notice those Boyd Coddington wheels in the photos. The doors, windows and trunk are all electric. He was asking $134,995 when he first listed this show qualilty street rod. Muscle Car Clones
1969 Pontiac Trans Am Tribute
So few first-year Trans Ams were produced that they are all big dollar cars to own today. Yet, unlike Yenko Camaros or Chevelle SS big blocks, relatively few ’69 Trans Am replicas are available for sale. Today a 1969 Pontiac Trans Am Tribute is in our Trans Am Section online, however. And it is a beauty. It was listed for sale by MGM Classic Cars in Addison, Illinois. They say it is equipped with a 400 ci V8 engine and added Ram Air hood, an automatic transmission and bucket seats with a console. Most first-year Trans Ams were Cameo White with Liberty blue stripes, and this one matches those colors. It even has air conditioning and power steering. Note the Pontiac PMD Rally wheels.
The following are more recently listed Muscle Car Clones:
1969 COPO Camaro Tribute, Collectible Motorcar of Atlanta

Deals of the Day
1971 Corvette T-Top
Right from the gitgo we know this is not a factory original 1971 Corvette Coupe. It has the Bridgehampton Blue paint over dark blue color combination which looks sharp but is not original to this car. It is being offered for sale at Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles this week. They tell us it is matching numbers with a 350 ci V8 and automatic transmission. It is equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, chrome bumpers and a retro-style radio. It has the very desirable removable T-Roof panels and a chrome six-point luggage rack. Note the 15-inch Rally style wheels. The C3’s are what many Baby Boomers considered the quintessential Corvette look based on the Marko Shark II concept. This is a well equipped example at a fair price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is only $22,750.
1930 Shay Model A Roadster
These Shay Roadsters always sell well. For those in the know, the Shay Model A Replicas were so authentic looking that Ford dealers all over the country were selling them with the approval of Ford Motor Company. It was a big deal to have one in your showroom back in the 1980’s. Here is a really nice one. It is a 1930 Ford Shay Roadster with a Rumble Seat. This reproduction is said to have just 3,900 original miles. It is powered by a realiable 2.3L 4 cylinder engine paired with a C4 automatic transmission. The replica has front disc brakes and electronic ignition for a dependable start and driving experience. It is being offered for sale through Classic Car Deals, an internet broker that sells collector cars for internet challenged seniors. This say this one starts, runs, drives and stops as it should. They say you can drive it comfortably every day. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is $17,995.
1949 Ford Coupe
Our newsletter readers know what we always say about a first generation Ford Thunderbird. They are so collectible that if you see one for under $30,000 in good condition, you should buy it. Well here is one you might want to have inspected. It is a 1955 Ford Thunderbird in Goldenrod Yellow with two tops. It is being offered for sale at Carroll Street Auto in Manchester, New Hampshire. They say it has a solid body which was resprayed. This car is a one-owner which presents well and has sparkling chrome and stainless. It was well maintained and “sympathetically restored.” They say the yellow/black interior presents well, and the underside is also in very good condition. There are two sets of wheels, an original set with correct wheel covers, and also a mounted set of Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels. The Baby Bird comes with a 292 ci V8 engine with a factory 4-barrel and factory dress-up kit (chrome air cleaner, ribbed rocker covers with Thunderbird logo.) It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is only $23,900.
1964 Ford Fairlane
From a private party seller in Winston-Salem, North Carolina comes a driver quality 1964 Ford Fairlane Sport Coupe at a very affordable price point. The two-door sport coupe was sourced from California so they say it has little or no rust. The seller says the floor pans are near perfect. Since the car remains so solid, the seller has used epoxy primer to seal in the original metal in several areas. It has a Mustang 302 roller engine with AFR Renegade 1472 heads, MSD 83521 Distributor and 8202 coil, Champion aluminum radiator, and an Edelbrock 4-barrel on top of a Performer intake. The transmission is a Mustang AOD. This Fairlane has front disc brakes and drums in the rear. You can have it inspected to find out more. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. They asking price is $16,500.
1971 Ford Galaxie 500
This may be the “sleeper deal” you’ve been looking for. It is a rare 1971 Ford Galaxie 500 429 Thunder Jet with low miles. Look at the photos, so nice and clean. Have it inspected and get up to 100 more photos of all the detail. The private party seller from New York says it has beautiful paint, and an “excellent interior.” He says it drives “Amazing.” There are many new parts and equipment to list, including power windows and seats, new shocks, power window motors, sending unit, fuel pump, master cylinder, brakes and more. He describes it as a “very straight rust free car.” Being that it was originally from Washington state and later Arizona, it has a great looking under carriage. The seller is the third owner. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on the front page of our site next week on Wednesday. The asking price is $11,900. Now that’s a lotta’ car for the money.

1960 MGA 1600 Roadster
Beverly Hills Car Club listed another outstanding find this week. It is a Chariot red 1960 MGA 1600 Roadster with a black vinyl interior. Now this car has some sports car character. It is a California car according to the ad description. It has a 4-speed manual transmission, inline four cylinder engine with SU dual carburetors, front wheel disc brakes, a black removable hardtop and chrome bumpers with overriders. Inside it has low-back bucket seats and a tonneau cover. The “windows” are removable side curtains. Remington tires are wrapped around 15-inch 5-spoke wheels. A notable detail of the MGA is that it marked a clear departure from earlier MG T-series cars, introducing a fully integrated, aerodynamic body design that helped define the brand’s postwar sports car direction. You should consider this, however. This one is not for the novice collector. This MGA has recently been found in storage and is currently not running. But the price is right. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is $10,750.
1968 Chevrolet C10
Wow! This 1968 Chevrolet C10 Resto Mod Custom Pickup will really surprise you. It was just listed for sale by Classic Car Deals, an internet broker. They describe it as a classic C10 which runs and drives well. The components on this truck have been refreshed, although it looks mostly original. They say it runs and drives great. They have the original set of wheels if you want to show it at classic car shows. The photos show a clean, solid truck in good condition. They call it “dependable.” The body looks good in the photos, however we always recommend that you should have a pre-purchase inspection done on any vehicle before you buy. In an inspection report you would get detailed photos showing the truck up close and personal where it counts. Hurry, though. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is $17,495.
