Little Known Secret
Your average Joe Public new car buyer did not know about it … In fact, you could say Chevrolet was unaware of it … but certain dealers around the U.S. found a way to order a 427 Camaro right from the factory using the Central Office Production Order system designed for fleet purchases. Chevrolet Product Promotions manager Vince Piggins figured out a way to order a COPO Camaro with an L72 427 ci V8 engine right from the factory. And he shared this with dealers that were heavily involved with racing, such as Don Yenko, Dick Harrell, Smokey Yunick, Roger Penske, Jim Hall and Fred Gibb. They all knew the Chevrolet ordering system.
Piggins showed them how to order a 427 Camaro from the factory using the COPO 9561 code on the Central Office Production Order form, and the rest is history. Thus, this Daytona Yellow 1969 COPO Camaro 427 was born. It was just listed for sale by a private party collector in Elyria, Ohio. If it was a real COPO is would actually be what is called a Double COPO, because it not ony has the correct 9561 code equipment, but also has the 9737 Sports Car Conversion package. The seller tells us it is show quality which you can verify by the photos. The seller says it is a tribute car (and thus, the price), but he believes it was an early X code Camaro. He has no documentation on that however. You should call to find out more.
The COPO 9561 equipment package came with the L72 427 425 hp COPO motor, a Muncie 4-speed M21 Close Ratio transmission, a Real BE Code 4.10:1 Positraction rear end, power front disc brakes and a 4-core curved-neck radiator. The seller says it has authentic parts including the 512 L72 Cast Iron Block, 6223 Crankshaft, 840 Hi-Performance Heads, 163 Winters aluminum intake, 4346 Holley Carb, 065 water pump, 499 distributor, 837 alternator, 418 starter and a chambered exhaust. The authentic COPO look is accentuated by the painted steel wheels with dog-dish hubcaps.
From the photos it looks as though it was recently restored. It is definitely an interesting find.

Classic Car News This Week
Jaguar F-Type S Convertible
When ClassicDriver.com selected its Top Ten Future Classics to own, they predicted that the Jaguar F-Type S would be one you could buy now at a great price and store away for future appreciation in value. Production on the F-Type S ceased in 2024, so the next generation of Jaguar sports car will be electric only. They predict the F-Type S will be the XKE of the future. It was the most powerful manual F-Type ever offered, and Ian Callum’s styling is perfect. The Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania has this 2014 Jaguar F-Type S Convertible for sale. They note that the F-Type’s active exhaust is clearly engineered to excite the hearts of sports car enthusiasts, claiming it to be superior to the high pitched whine of the Porsche flat sixes or the rumble of the naturally aspirated Corvette V8’s. It has the supercharged 3.0 liter DOHC 6 cylinder engine with an 8-speed automatic tranmsission. This one still has only 8k actual miles. You can buy it now for half the price it sold for new.

1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
Chrysler built the Dodge Challenger T/A’s and the Plymouth AAR Cudas to compete in the SCCA Trans Am series of racing which was big back in the day. These cars are so venerated by Mopar fans today that you rarely see them for sale anymore. Mopar collectors won’t let them go. But just before this newsletter came out today a 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A was listed by a private party seller from Alabama. He says it is a VIN number correct T/A with a 340 ci V8 engine and Six Pack carburetors. It also has the 4-speed Pistol Grip manual transmission, the hot setup on these rare T/A’s. He tells us that a full bumper to bumper rotisserie restoration was performed on this Mopar. He says the fast ratio steering box was rebuilt. And, yes, he does have the broadcast sheets and owners manual for this car. What a find!
1990 Chevy SS454 PIckup
One of the most popular vehicles in today’s collector car market is not a classic car. It is a later model special edition pickup truck produced by Chevrolet from 1990 untill 1993. This 1990 Chevrolet SS 454 Pickup was just listed for sale by GearHead Classics in Sherman, Texas. It is one of the early editions shown here in its black finish with a red interior. It was a factory hot rod pickup so unusual that it is recognized for its uniqueness by collectors today. Chevrolet’s idea was to drop the biggest engine they had into their smallest shortbed half-ton pickup. The formula worked. The SS 454 no more than hit the market in 1990 and they were sold out instantly. It is one of Chevrolet’s most successful builds. It was the first muscle truck and completely surprised and delighted the new truck buying public. That is why these trucks are still so popular today among new-gen collectors.

1931 Cadillac 355A Coupe
Known for their luxury ride and advancements in engineering prowess, the 1931 Cadillac 355A Coupe is extremely rare to find today. They only produced about 1,500 of them originally. This one has been restored as a high end street rod with an LS1 engine and 4L65e automatic transmission, a blend of modern technology and classic looks and style. The front suspension has Kugel Komponents, and it features a Vintage Air Gen V unit, plus Painless integrated wiring system with computer. It also has the Digital Guard Dawg keyless ignition system. In fact, the seller says it has too many upgrades to list in the ad. He suggests you should call him for “a good earfull” of the build history. This is one you can drive and enjoy.

This week Greg at Vanguard Motor Sales has a special treat for our readers. They just got in a 1956 Chevrolet 210 Gasser. This is one of the nicest we’ve ever seen. They usually are not in show quality condition like this one. With a 327 under the hood, this car will be the talk of any car show you go to. The chrome and trim are near perfect and shine like they were show prepped. Everything from the aluminum wheels to the headers showing in the wheel wells and side exhaust is right out of the ‘70s. None of the gassers at the track ever looked so good. Nice and straight. This one is set up to show and go. Click the video window above to check out the under carriage and let Greg take you for a test drive.

Collector Cars with Low Miles
2002 Camaro SS Anniversary
As the Camaro was being phased out Chevrolet created some beautiful special editions as a final tribute to one of the finest sports cars ever produced. Here is the 2002 Camaro SS 35th Anniversary Edition Convertible. The 35th Anniversary edition came with its own special appearance package, plus upgraded suspension and brakes. The interior exhibited unique stitching and special edition floor mats. It was the last of the F-body Camaros. This one is a collector’s dream because it only has 31,900 miles. All original, it comes with its LS1 5.7 Liter engine rated at 325 horsepower, the same engine you would have found in a Corvette for that year. It has an automatic transmission and was equipped with a 12-CD changer in the trunk. With such lo miles on it, the owner is offering it at below what it would appraise for.
Here are more recent Low Miles additions:
1987 Chevy Monte Carlo SS, WeBe Autos, 8,600 miles

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1936 Hupmobile 618G
The most interesting project car for restoration in our Project Car Section is this 1936 Hupmobile Model 618G Sedan. Oh, what a creative mind could imagine for this car’s future! It has the sedan body with suicide doors. A true barn find, it was stored for years, but remains nearly rust free. It was obviously picked to be a street rod years ago because the grille has been modified and converted to sealed beam headlights. While the car is still complete, the engine and transmission were removed many years ago. The seller says he will include the original engine, transmission and radiator with the sale. You should have it inspected before you buy. It even comes with a clear Kansas title.
The following are just some of the cars available in the Project Car Section this week:

1979 Camaro Z28
While the ’69 Camaro Z/28 gets all the glory and attention from Baby Boomer collectors, late second generation Camaros are now becoming more rare and hard to find. A new generation of collectors will find them very attractive because of their unique styling and design. This 1979 Camaro Z28 is being offered for sale by a private party seller out of Rhode Island. He says it was totally restored with flawless black exterior and a complete new interior. It has the rebuilt original 350 ci V8 engine and automatic transmission. The custom 2-inch exhaust creates a beautiful note, he says. He says it is absolutely mint throughout. A shrewd collector could pick this one up at a great price and store it away for future appreciation in value. He was asking $26,500 up untill yesterday when he told us to drop the price to $20,000. Oh, yeah!

Deals of the Day
Bullitt Mustang
It was in 2001 that Ford first decided to make a Bullitt edition Mustang to pay homage to the 1968 Hollywood movie Bullitt. The movie car was a big block 390 Mustang with Highland Green finish. It is memorable because it included the quintessential car chase scenes, considered the best of all time. Here is a fresh example of the 2001 Bullitt Mustang which was just listed for sale at Unique Classic Cars In Minnesota. Looking good in the photos, they have it listed as having just 15,804 miles on the odometer. And it looks that clean and straight. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because it is listed for the best price we have seen on an original retro Bullitt Mustang. They are asking $24,900.
1953 Plymouth 2-Door
A long-time Cars-On-Line fan from Florida called us this week to list his 1953 Plymouth 2-Door Sedan for sale. He says it is a driver. In his words it “runs, drives, stops and looks great.” It has had the 12-volt conversion. He says it has never had any rust or bondo anywhere. He notes that it remains in mostly original condition and has only 53,000 miles. You can have it inspected before you buy to get a better read on the condition class. You will want to know how the chrome and stainless looks. This one would be worth the effort. Look at how nice the interior looks for a car this age. The photos would seem to reveal nice straight body panels. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. His asking price is only $7,750.
1940 Chevy Street Rod
A 1940 Chevy Street Rod was just listed by a private party seller from Turners Falls, Massachusetts. Seen here in street rod flat black, the seller says it has been chopped and shaved. It looks like it has a small block engine under the hood and the transmission is a 4-speed automatic. He says it is a nice “old school hot rod.” He indicates that he used it as a daily driver in the summer months. Those are 15X8 Boyd wheels you see in the photo. It looks like there were a number of body mods that excentuate the look and stance on this one. You might need to see more photos. There is more here than meets the eye. You should have it inspected before you buy, but hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday next week. His asking price is $18,000. I think you will agree that this is a lotta’ car for the money.
1976 Cadillac Eldorado
It is no surprise that Beverly Hills Car Club has emerged as one of the top deals in our DEAL of the DAY feature this week. They always seem to have a few deeply discounted collector cars in their inventory. This week they listed a Turquoise Green 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible for sale. Our readers know the history on these historic Cadillac convertibles. Insurance pressures made owning a convertible less than desirable back in the day, so Cadillac decided to stop producing convertible models. The 1976 Eldorado was to be the last of a long line of Cadillac convertibles. Cadillac fans bought them up and stored them away waiting for the prices to skyrocket on these Eldorado convertibles. I remember selling one for $100,000 in the early 1980’s. But Cadillac came back with the Eldorado convertible because of popular demand and the collector value dropped on the ’76 models. Many of them were preserved in nice condition. Beverly Hills Car Club says this one is mechanically sound and full of options. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. The asking price is only $17,500.
1980 Camaro Z28
According to Hagerty Insurance Company there are now more Millenial generation car collectors than Baby Boomers. That is why car collecting is changing as a hobby. The Millenials are interested in vehicles which were popular in their time. Today we have a 1980 Camaro Z28 that is right in their wheelhouse. It is being offered for sale by Cruisin Classics, a collector car dealer out of Columbus, Ohio. They say it is wearing its original white paint and remains in driver quality condition with 112,634 actual miles on the car. The styling on these second generation Camaros is what made them popular. This one has a factory triple-blue gradient stripe decal in good condition. They say the rear facing hood scoop is functional opening up at full throttle. Click this link to view a walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday next week. Their asking price is $12,995.
1982 Datsun 280ZX Turbo
Another recent favorite of the Gen-X and the Millenial generation is this 1982 Datsun 280ZX Turbo, one of the most popular sports cars of the 1980’s. It is also at Beverly Hills Car Club this week, and they tell us it was a California car with Silver Mist metallic exterior paint. You got Porsche type performance from the 2.8L L28ET Turbocharged Inline 6 cylinder engine, plus an exotic look that was very popular back then. Many Corvette enthusiasts switched over to the 280ZX Turbo. It had that kind of reputation. This one has the popular removable glass roof panels, power window and mirrors, cruise control and a front spiler with rear window louvers. The 5-speed manual gearbox was a delight to drive, with dual exhaust out the rear and 15-inch ZX Turbo wheels. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week if it lasts that long. The asking price is $12,750. Hurry on this one.
1959 Triumph TR3 Roadster
With custom colored burgundy paint and leather buckets seats, this 1959 Triumph TR3 Roadster has enough updates and add-ons to make it stand out. It is for sale through WeBe Autos, an internet broker that helps East Coast collectors sell their vehicles over the internet. It is located in Centereach, New York and they tell us it runs “fantastic” and drives well on the highway. It is the product of an older restoration with only one owner for the past forty years. During that time he says it was always garage kept. It features a 4-speed manual transmission and wire knockoff wheels. It has new rear shocks and transmission mounts. The 4-cylinder engine is fed by dual SU carburetors and has extra fans for cooling. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. The asking price is $19,995.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
