All Boxes Checked
By 1970 Mercury was emerging as the performance division of Ford-Lincoln-Mercury. A NASCAR aware Baby Boom generation was into aerodynamic cars with big block power. So Mercury set out to give them what they wanted. That turned out to be the Cyclone Spoiler.
A private party seller from Canada just listed his 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler 429 Cobra Jet for sale this week in the Mercury Muscle Car section of our website. When you bought a Cyclone Spoiler you did not have to check all kinds of boxes on the order form to get what you wanted. The Cyclone Spoiler came standard with all the good stuff. The 429 Cobra Jet with Ram Air was already included. It came with a functional front chin spoiler and large rear deck air-foil for aerodynamics. The drivetrain included a 4-speed Toploader transmission with Hurst shifter spinning a 3.50 Traction-Lok differential. Another standard feature was the competition handling package.
For the interior, the Cyclone Spoiler had a unique dashboard with four separate round gauges (tach, oil pressure, temperature and amps) all angled toward the driver. That made it seem like you were in an airplane cockpit. And it came with a Rimblow steering wheel.
It has power front disc brakes, dual exhaust, a full console, and original High Back Clarion knit bucket seats. The seller says he has the Deluxe Marti Report on the car which will go with the sale. He also has the original dealer invoice. Only 1,631 Mercury Cyclone Spoilers were produced in 1970. That makes them much more rare than their Torino Cobra Jet cousins.

Ranker’s Best Muscle Cars
It has been almost a year now since Ranker posted its “Best Muscle Cars” list. After 4,700 muscle car fans have voted on the list, it looks like the 1967 Shelby Mustang has emerged as the world’s most popular muscle car. (The one shown here is for sale at Legendary Motorcar Company this week.) The Mustang Boss 429 comes in second and the 1970 Chevelle SS takes third place in the hearts of muscle car fans who have voted so far. Click here to read the Ranker Best Muscle Cars survey. Ranker is a website that posts polls in which readers may participate. If you haven’t voted yet, you can still make your preference known by clicking the up or down arrows below the photos. I’m wondering if more Ford fans have been voting than Mopar and Chevrolet fans because Mustangs are in three of the top five positions at this time. And there is no Hemi Cuda on this list. That’s it! It is time for Cars-On-Line.com to do another Top Muscle Cars list of our own. Be sure to read the newsletter next week to find out how to vote for your favorite muscle cars of all time.
This Weeks Featured Stories
1970 Custom Dune Buggy
If you’ve attended any of the ISCA World of Wheels or Autorama car shows in the Midwest or on the East Coast you’ve probably seen this extreme 1970 Custom Dune Buggy in its featured car show display. It was the 2000-2001 Comp Class winner in ISCA. With a performance custom build and amazing murals and paint, the owner says it has won many Best of Show awards, Best Paint awards and awards for Air Brushing and interior design. This week, the private party seller from New York state posted this amazing dune buggy for sale. The engine compartment alone is a work of art. Find out more by calling the number in the ad.
1957 Ford Thunderbird E-Bird
Only six percent of the T-Birds produced in 1957 came with the E Code option big 312 V8 engine with 270 horsepower. The E Code Thunderbird (often referred to as an E-Bird) was a high performance version of the two-seater Ford Thunderbird. This Flame Red 1957 Ford Thunderbird is an E Code and comes with both the Colonial White auxiliary hardtop and a white convertible top as well. It is being offered for sale this week at Streetside Classics near Atlanta. It comes highly optioned, including the rare factory 312 E Code engine, original dual-quad intake with Holley carbs, cold air conditioning, power brakes, power steering, power windows, power seats and factory fender skirts. They tell us it is beautiful inside and out, benefitting from an older restoration. Click here to watch a walk-around video and hear it run. The undercarriage looks amazing.
1955 Swallow Doretti
Don’t feel bad if you do not recognize this little two-seater British sports car. Most people have never seen one. This is a 1955 Swallow Doretti Roadster produced by the Swallow Sidecar Company. The British sidecar company was known for its expert craftsmanship, and in 1954 and 1955 they tried their skills at manufacturing a two seater sports car which they called the Doretti. Although it was a British company, most of the Dorettis were sold in the U.S., back when two-seater sports cars were not made here. This one is being offered for sale at the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania. It is shown here in British Racing Green finish. You will note the design cues from British Jaguars, and the front facia which shows Italian influence including the hood bulge. The 2.0 engine was said to be sporty for its time. They say the car runs as nice as it looks. If you are looking for something “really rare,” this is it.

1955 Chevy Bel Air 2-Dr Hardtop
For a restomod this is a nicely priced 1955 Chevy Bel Air 2-Dr Hardtop. This video presentation was done by Coyote Classics in Greene, Iowa. They came up with another great car here. Finished in Turquoise and white, it was fully restored in 2015. It has a 355 ci 385 horsepower V8 with a 4-barrel and a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission. This is a great inspection video because you get to see how well the doors fit (common problem on Bel Airs.) And the custom leather interior has held up even though this car was driven and enjoyed since the restoration. It presents well and is fun to drive. Click the video window above to see the whole inspection video. Then take kit out for a virtual test drive.

It has the 5.7L LS1 engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. Deals of the Day
1979 Corvette T-Top
Beverly Hills Car Club is making a habit of dominating our DEAL of the DAY feature recently. They must be sourcing their cars well to be offering such good prices. For instance, here is a 1979 Corvette Coupe with T-bar roof panels. It has the L48 350 engine which they say is matching numbers. This is a California car with a 4-barrel carburetor, automatic transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, power windows and air conditioning. They say it delivers straight forward performance you would expect from a Corvette. You’ll love the look …. black with mirrored T-Tops, it sits on 15-inch steel wheels wrapped in Cooper Cobra raials GT tires. Concealed headlights, quad tail lights and rear glass complete the signature Corvette C3 look. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $14,750.
1937 Hudson Terraplane
This one must be their price leader for the week. Beverly Hills Car Club just listed a 1937 Hudson Terraplane Brougham for sale. What a sweet looking vintage motorcar! And rare! Finished in a rich Nut Brown Metallic exterior paint complemented by a warm Tan Mohair-style interior, it has flowing fenders, an upright grille and refined styling. It has a 212 ci L-head 6-cylinder engine paired with a 3-speed manual transmission, delivering an authentic driving experience true to its era. Check out that hood ornament. Whitewall tires are mounted on 16-inch steel wheels with the Hudson-Terraplane branded hubcaps. Inside it has a floor-mounted shifter to manage the 3-speed manual transmission. They tell us it is mechanically sound and ready for your summer weekends. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. They are only asking $16,750.
1962 Oldsmobile F-85
Beverly Hills Car Club also just posted this Provincial White 1962 Oldsmobile F-85 Convertible for sale this week. They say it has a white power convertible top and comes with a parade boot. It also has the interesting small aluminum V8, a 215 ci engine that was affectionately called the “Rockette.” This was the bullet proof 215 ci, one of the best engines GM ever came up with, featuring a 4-barrel carburetor and high-compression 185 horsepower performance. And it has the iconic push-button radio. Additional equipment includes a bucket seats, chrome bumpers, Dayton Thorobred Steel thin whitewall tires mounted on 13-inch steel wheels, and a full-size spare tire. You can see some dents and body repair needed in the photos, so a pre-purchase inspection is suggested. But it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is $17,500.
1955 Ford Customline
This 1955 Ford Customline Sedan will impress you. It is being offered for sale by Connors Motorcar Company in West Chester, Pennsylvania this week. They say it “looks and drives like new!” It benefits from a complete restoration, and they say it has won an AACA Grand National award. Just one family has owned it its entire life. The Snowshoe White Ford has gleaming chrome and an immaculate blue interior. See dozens of detailed photos on their ad page. The engine compartment looks real clean and the undercarriage looks solid, although you can tell it gets driven regularly. It is powered by a 272 ci V8 engine producing about 165 horsepower with a 3-speed on the column. Click here to watch a walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. Their asking price is $19,500.
1952 MG TD Roadster
Beverly Hills listed this 1952 MG TD Roadster in our Classic Sports Car listings. Having lived long enough to have seen these little MG roadsters sell for up to six figures 20 years ago, it is with much amazement that we are seeing them for such affordable prices these days. You can own this one for “pocket change” almost. They say this Old English white ’52 MG TD is matching numbers with a 1,250 cc XPAG Inline-Four TD2 series eng ine, and a 4-speed manual transmission. The four-cylinder engine is fed by Twin SU carburetors. They say it is mechanically sound with a smooth throttle response, drum brakes and Jaeger/Lucas instruments. It is outfitted with a tonneau cover, 15-inch steel disc wheels, matching rear-mounted steel spare, a black convertible top and Banjo-styled steering wheel. This is the little British two-seater that American drivers fell in love with. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. Their price is just $13,500.
1974 Triumph TR6
With the British “Union Jack” decals decorating its rear quarters, this British sports car embodies the spirit of open-air motoring and delivers the raw driving experience that made Triumph a legendary name. This 1974 Triumph TR6 represents an opportunity to drive the original classic British sports car. No surprise, it is being offered for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. They say it is mechanically sound. We noticed that there are some imperfections in the paint and surface rust on the undercarriage (see photos.) We would always recommend having a pre-purchase inspection performed on the car before buying it. The TR6 has a 6 cylinder engine (more than enough for so small a car) with dual carburetors and a 4-speed manual transmission. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is $13,750.
2002 BMW Z3 Roadster
The BMW Z3 roadsters were a game changer for BMW when they first arrived in the U.S. A two-seaters sports car with modern technology and performance? That put a smile on every drivers face. Who would have thought that you would be able to buy a 2002 BMW Z3 Roadster for such a deep discount? This week the Sovereign Auto Group in Michigan is offering this desirable sports car convertible for sale. With an Alpine White exterior and black leather bucket seats, this 2.5 liter fuel injected car was born to be a classic. And it has only 42,000 miles! It even comes with a power electro-hydraulic soft top. Plus, it has the premium package with wood trim. Highly optioned, it comes with air conditioning, power windows, heated power mirrors, and a Sony stereo with CD player. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is $12,000.
