Ahead of its Time
If you attended the Amelia Island Concours earlier this month you may have seen this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing prominently displayed by the Ritz-Carlton. It is an excellent example of one of the most coveted cars in the world. It was so innovative when it was designed by Mercedes-Benz seventy years ago that it still looks futuristic today … like a rocket ready to blast off. When historians discuss the greatest cars of all time, this Mercedes Gullwing is always part of the conversation.
The silver Gullwing 300SL is being offered for sale this week at Gullwing Motor Cars in New York. They tell us it has been under the same ownership for the past 45 years and is a black-plate California car that remains numbers matching. It is still mostly original with the red leather interior and a matching set of luggage which goes with the car. The previous owner acquired the car in 1980 and had it repainted in its original silver finish. They say it is a strong driver which is perfect for tours and events.
Mercedes designed the 300SL Gullwing to go Grand Prix racing from 1954 through 1957. It features a lightweight tubular frame and innovative Bosch mechanical fuel injection setup, giving its 3.0-liter inline-six up to 240 horsepower—exceptional for the era. The 300SL was a visually stunning design because of its Gullwing doors. But the innovation did not stop there. In addition, Mercedes also deployed the first Bosch mechanical fuel injection, a coil spring independent front suspension, plus coil spring and swing-axle rear suspension.
Only 1,400 Gullwing Super Lights were produced. The street version had the tubular frame and fully independent front suspension. In factory form, it was capable of speeds of 160 miles per hour, making it the fastest factory production car of its time.

Classic Car News This Week
No Reserve
Not just one, but three Continental Mark II classic cars will be offered for sale at No Reserve during the upcoming GAA Classic Spring Auction in Greensboro, North Carolina, April 9-11, 2026. For 1956 and 1957, Lincoln, Ford’s elite luxury car division, produced their Continental Mark II model as a stand alone division. They did not use the word Lincoln in their model title, marketing the Continental as a separate division, and no longer under the Lincoln brand. The design was very European in nature, and the Continental was to be a status symbol of the luxury elite. The 1957 Continental Mark II you see here in the photo is from the Hilton Head Collection which will be sold at No Reserve in the GAA Classic auction. It comes loaded with options. You will find more in the auction inventory listed on the Cars-On-Line.com website today.
Chevelle SS Inspection
As the prices on 1966 through 1971 Chevelle Super Sports keep escalating, it becomes more and more important not to make a mistake on condition when buying one. Condition class determines value. An Iowa man wanted us to go half-way across the country to the West Coast to inspect a 1970 Chevelle SS which he wanted to buy. He was aware that the air conditioning was not working, but he wanted us to make sure the body panels were solid. Our independent inspector found that the air conditioning compressor was not locked up and the clutch turned freely. Although the body work was done nicely, he found bondo throughout the body. He also found some rust in the trunk due to leaks in the weather stripping. The paint had some scratches in it. The transmission was definitely not matching numbers. Overall, the Chevelle performed well and would be a fair Number Three driver. At least now the buyer knew what he was getting into.
Our newsletter readers know that we recommend you should always have a pre-purchase inspection done on a collector vehicle before you buy. There are no warranties on old cars, so it is buyer beware when purchasing a collector car. Click here to find out how to order a pre-purchase inspection and appraisal.
This Weeks Featured Stories
1970 Pontiac Trans Am
There are a fair number of the early 1970 Pontiac Trans Am muscle cars remaining in beautiful condition today, but not too many of them still have just 16,000 miles from new. That’s the case with this beautiful Ram Air III version of the early Trans Am which was just listed for sale at Verrillo Motor Car Company in Clifton Park, New York. It has the WS Code 400 ci 345 hp engine and original Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission with an original 12-bolt posi rear end. What’s more, this Polar White TA has factory air conditioning, a Hurst shifter, power steering, power brakes and tinted glass. A comprehensive frame-off restoration was performed so it could win MCACN Gold. This is a very special second generation Trans Am with desirable factory options.
Ferrari Daytona
With the same owner for the past 41 years, this 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 is a fresh face on the classic Ferrari market. The Daytona Ferrari been listed for sale this week by Gullwing Motor Cars out of New York. They say it is a well loved and well maintained driver quality exotic finished in Rosso Corsa over black leather. It has never been restored and has not been on the public market for sale in over four decades. The Ferrari shows just 30,000 miles. They say it presents well with nice paint, chrome, and a clean underside. The interior is considered “excellent” with the leather nicely preserved. They say it runs out “superbly”, offering an exhilarating experience just like a Daytona should. Only 1,264 Daytonas were produced by Ferrari. They consider this one to be a “stunning driver.”
Auctions
Mark your calendars for the Spring Carlisle Collector Car Flea Market and Auction in historic Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It is one of the oldest and most respected collector car events in the country. What we like about this great car show is the Spring Carlisle Auction at the Expo Center across from the fairgrounds. This year the auction will be held on April 23-24, 2026. They have just begun to list some of their auction inventory on our website. Here are a few of the vehicles we noticed will be offered for sale to the highest bidder next month.
1970 Boss 302 Mustang
There is already a good lineup of muscle cars available for the Carlisle Spring Auction at the Carlisle Expo Center, April 23-24, 2026. One they have selected as their feature car is a 1970 Mustang Boss 302 in Grabber Yellow, Lot # 495.1. It has the 302 ci Boss 8 cylinder engine with a 4-speed close-ratio toploader manual transmission. And, yes, they say it is numbers matching. The odometer shows 74,430 miles, and they say they are actual miles on a Maryland title. According to the sale description, this Mustang is 99 percent original, a survivor class muscle car. They conclude that there was never any bodywork done, ever. Of course, it has “no rust, runs perfect.” You may never find one this nice again. The black interior has high back bucket seats, and it has the power front disc brakes and quick ratio steering with a competition suspension. You can see from the photos that the rear deck has a spoiler. What do you think it will sell for?
1953 Chevrolet 3100
The Carlisle Auctions are famous for their special Truck Hour sale where you see nothing but pickup trucks coming through during that time frame. The pickups you see going throught the auction during Truck Hour are usually pretty special. For instance, one of the stars of Truck Hour this year is a black 1953 Chevrolet 3100 5-Window Pickup, Lot # 218.1 in the sale. They say it is an extremely nice example. It still has the 216 ci 6 cylinder engine with a dual carb. They say it is very straight and all steel, and that it shifts smoothly with its three-on-a-tree standard transmission. What is really significant about this classic pickup truck is that the paint is “nearly perfect,” according to the description. All the gauges work, the heat works, the wipers work, and they tell us the doors shut beautifully. Even the dome lights work.
1986 Mazda RX-7
Millenials will love this 1986 Mazda RX-7 as it crosses the auction floor during the upcoming Carlisle Spring Auction in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, April 23-24, 2026. It is one of the featured cars in the auction and will be one that Gen-Y collectors seem to admire and want to own. This one was a one-owner car from California and is still in “beautiful condition,” according to the Carlisle people. It was always garage kept, they say. A professional “original color repaint” was done in 2008. It has a few extras, such as KYB struts and front and rear KYB sway bars which were installed in 2006 by Majors/Select Auto. It comes with original owners manual, manufacturers service manual and service records from “day one.” No expense was spared to keep this car in this condition. This is the one you want to collect.

1983 Camaro Z28
Dave from Showdown Auto in Michigan walks you through an inspection video on his new listing, a beautiful 1983 Camaro Z28. The reason this is so significant is that the Millenial generation of collectors is growing and this is what they are looking for … cars they knew and loved from the 1980’s. If a poster of this Z28 was one of the cars on your bedroom wall when you were growing up, you just might be a Millenial. Dave says it only has 72k original miles. He says it runs and drives really nice and the air conditioning blows cold. The interior is beautiful. You can see more photos at the ad link. Click the video window above to hear what Dave has to say about this original Z28 from 1983.

Collector Cars with Low Miles
2004 Chevy SSR
Here is one that we would call a “future collectible.” It may be too knew for us to consider it a classic, but you know it will be a collector car when its time comes. Somebody knew this and kept it pampered and with low miles. This 2004 Chevrolet SSR Convertible Pickup is a retro classic design from the early 2000’s when Chevrolet recognized that “old cars and trucks” were the rage in America. It was an omage, if you will, to the 1940’s look with a one-of-a-kind build by Chevrolet. What is significant about this one is that it still has just 915 actual miles from new. It is being offered for sale this week at Mershon’s in Ohio. Now, that’s the way to buy a collector car before it gets pricey.
Here are more recent Low Miles additions:
1993 Cadillac Allante, Orlando Classic Cars, FL, only 140 miles
1980 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, Primo Classic Cars, FL, 6,807 actual miles
1967 Dodge Charger, WeBe Autos, 22,561 miles on odometer

2004 Corvette Z06 Commemorative, Streetside Ft Worth, 23,448 actual mi

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1935 Bentley Mulliner
Although this 1935 Bentley 3 ½ Litre Mulliner Saloon looks really good in the photos, it has been in storage for the past 16 years and now needs a recommissioning. It is being offered for sale by Gullwing Motor Cars out of New York as a project car for restoration. The former owner started disassembly to repaint it many years ago. The paint and brightwork have been done, but the car went into long term storage before it was completed and has remained disassembled ever since. A collection of parts will go along with the sale. They say the engine is seized and has not run for 20 years. For the right buyer it could be the opportunity of a lifetime.

1984 Camaro F41
We are doing a deep dive into some hot 1980’s sports cars today. These are the cars the Millenial generation is hot on, sports cars from the 1980’s and 1990’s. For instance, we spotted this 1984 Camaro F41 model, the factory Special Performance Suspension package designed to improve handling and road feel. It is being offered for sale this week at Hanksters Hot Rods in Daytona Beach. They note that the F41 package included larger front and rear sway bars, stiffer springs, and upgraded shock valving, giving the Camaro noticeably better cornering stability and reduced body roll compared to standard models. The performance package was commonly paired with high end models like the Z28. But this Camaro was ordered with the F41 package from the dealership. Click here to watch their video inspection and get more info. It is so nice it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. They are asking $19,900 for this car.
1984 Nissan 300ZX
Another hot car from the early 1980’s is this 1984 Nissan 300ZX which was just listed by North Shore Classics in Illinois. All original, they say it only has 38k miles on it. You will note that it comes with T-tops and has the light gray paint that was so popular and elegant for that era. The car is powered by a 3.0 liter 6 cylinder engine paired to a 5-speed manual tranmission. The interior is all original with power steering, power windows, power 4-wheel disk brakes, tilt steering wheel and cruise control. This true survivor also comes with a clean CarFax report. North Shore Classics tells us it runs and drives just the way it would have when it came from the dealer in 1984. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday next week. Their asking price is $21,900.
1966 Ford Mustang
This one is a bit more of a project car than a finished product. But you should take a look. The 1966 Mustang Coupe is being offered for sale by Classic Auto Showplace in Michigan. The seller shared that this car has been lovingly cared for from the time of his marriage all the way to raising his family. For 22 years he says it was a part of his family. It has been thoughtfully upgraded over the years with a Jasper 289 crate engine bored out to 302; AOD 4-speed automatic transmission; front disc brakes, aluminum radiator with electric cooling fan, Holley 4-barrel carburetor and electric fuel pump. He says it starts easily and runs strong. However it does need some cosmetic bodywork and paint at this point. You should have it inspected to get a better idea of what is required. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. Their asking price is $19,995.
2006 Chrysler Crossfire Convertible
We continue to believe that this is one of the best sports cars to come out of the early 2000’s. Here is a 2006 Chrysler Crossfire Limited Convertible for sale at Streetside Classics in Ft Worth, Texas. Done in a factory clearcoat version of Dark Slate Gray, this little two-seater sports car was designed for Chrysler by Daimler engineering. Streetside tells us that there is some normal wear on the interior, and the car has 98k miles, but the cloth convertible top is said to “look good.” Look through the photos, and it might pay to have a pre-purchase inspection performed to be thorough. The one has the 3.2 liter V6 with a DGU 5-speed automatic transmission. It rides on stock alloy wheels, with 18-inch front and 19-inch rears, wrapped in Pirelli tires. The stock dual exhaust sounds good. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday next week. The price is set at $15,995.
1972 Olds Cutlass Supreme
Beverly Hills Car Club has done it again. They listed a bevy of desirable collector cars at decent prices this week. For instance, here is a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme which seems cheap for the condition and price. They note that it is mechanically sound with nice trim and interior. Finished in its factory color Silver Pewter with a black vinyl top and dual black hood stripes, this classic American coupe presents a timeless 1970s look with its clean lines, chrome accents, and well-balanced proportions. They say it has a numbers matching 350 ci V8 with an automatic transmission. Inside it has a split bench seat and air conditioning, power steering, front disc brakes, dual rear sideview mirrors and courtesy lights. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The price is $19,750.
2006 Jaguar XK8 Convertible
This may be the sleeper DEAL in this featured section this week. Primo Classics International has just listed this 2006 Jaguar XK8 Convertible, the successor to the legendary XKE. They call it a “remarkable original” This one is from the special Victory Edition series. It has only 62,664 actual miles and is powered by a 4.2 liter DOHC V8 engine with a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission. With a red exterior and tan interior, it looks sharp in the photos. Only 1,050 Victory Editions were produced in 2006. It has factory air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power locks and comes with a clean CarFax report.
