Last of the Muscle Cars
It was the end of the muscle car era. Already many of the great muscle car names had vanished … Hemi Cuda, Boss 429, Chevelle SS 454. Only Pontiac’s Trans Am with the Super Duty 455 remained. It was the last of the great performance cars of the muscle car era. It had all the power you could want in a performance muscle car, and with its superior handling, it was like a torque monster on rails..
In an unexpected listing this week, a never before offered 1974 Pontiac Trans Am SD-455 was advertised for sale by Motorcar Studio in Atlanta. This rare Trans Am has been owned by the same family since it was purchased new. Pontiac collectors will note that this is the first time it has ever been offered for sale. Motorcar Studio is selling the car on consignment for the niece of the original owner. They tell us that both the engine and transmission are the original, numbers-matching components. They believe the mileage to be just under 52,000 miles.
Pontiac only produced 212 Super Duty Trans Ams with four-speeds in 1974. In fact, the SD-455 Trans Ams were only produced for two years, 1973 and 1974.
This Super Duty came from the factory as you see it here in Admiralty Blue with a red interior. (Follow this link to review dozens of detailed photos and documentation.) The original SD-455 motor under the hood is numbers matching, and remains mated to the original 4-speed manual transmission according to the ad copy. Documentation includes the original books, window sticker, correspondence from the original owner and some service records. Motorcar Studio has done a full walk-around video for you to inspect the condition. For a Pontiac collector this one is an investment quality find.

Future Collectibles
About a year ago we did an article on cars that are ripe to escalate in value in today’s collector car market. The story carved out some of the specialty cars and muscle cars that have not gotten as much respect as prices surged during the past two decades. In this article we think we got it right when we noted the emerging popularity of the 1969-1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1. If we learned anything in 2022 it is that the first generation Mach 1’s are some of the best looking muscle cars ever produced. You can still get them at reasonable prices today. But in the future we expect these prices to escalate. Click here to read the report on the Top Ten Collector Cars Sure to Appreciate in Value.

Most Expensive Car
The year 2022 will be remembered for one thing in particular relating to the collector car world. The most expensive car ever sold was a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR which was sold for charity out of the Mercedes-Benz collection this year. The race car was known as the “Uhlenhaut Coupe” because Mercedes executive Rudi Uhlenhaut drove it to work everyday in Stuttgart, Germany. It was the racing version of the Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing. In fact, it is the sister car to the 300 SLR in which Sir Stirling Moss won the Mille Miglia. The car sold in May of 2022 for 135 million euros (about $143 million in U.S. dollars.) It is the highest priced sale of a collector car ever recorded. The sale was conducted by RM Sotheby’s. Follow this link to view their record breaking sale.
This Weeks Featured Stories

1967 Shelby GT500
Here is a real 1967 Shelby GT500 which is said to be one of the last ones produced by Shelby American before Ford took over production. According to No Reserve Classics in New Jersey, this Shelby has never been offered for sale before. Its last owner had it for the past forty years. In fact, they say it still has just 38k original miles from new. The Dark Moss Green Shelby is said to be a very original survivor. It still has the factory headlights with the correct high beam FoMoCo HighBeam lights centered in the original inboard grille. They even note it has all of the original glass, factory-stamped quarter panels, and even the factory original exhaust tips. This kind of factory original equipment is hard to find these days. And they won’t be making any more of them.

American Show Truck
Our readers may remember when we featured this truck in a story we did at the Daytona Turkey Run in 2015. It is a jacked custom 1988 Ford F-350 Crew Cab with a 17-inch lift and 55-inch wheels. It has an incredible 514 ci stroker motor with twin Paxton Superchargers with Dart aluminum heads, custom intake and throttle body injection. The suspension is all one-off custom designed. You will note the red, white and blue off-road lights. The builder told us he did the truck as a tribute to his fellow servicemen from the Vietnam War and after. The custom show truck is being offered for sale through WeBe Autos out of New York. Click here to view a walk-around video and here the owner tell about the build.

American Show Truck
If you love historic motorcycles, this edition of the Cars-On-Line newsletter will fill your boot. Find classic and custom show bikes for sale below in the Motorcycle Section. Of particular note is a special 2004 Honda VTX Show Bike built from new at KCS Custom Cycle Fabrication. It is being offered for sale this week through Classic Car Marketing, a Southern California specialty dealer. They say it comes with a custom one-off exhaust by Keith Schindler, 40-degree rake, and 2-inch frame stretch. It also features custom one-off bars, Accutronix grips, one-off alligator seat by Bitchen Seat Company, and Ness front brakes with custom rear brakes. The custom paint is House of Kolor Gamma Gold laid down by Aggressive Design. Gamma good.

Deals of the Day

1974 Chevy Nova
The Chevy Nova was a popular car back in the day when you could shoehorn a big engine in the first generation Chevy II Novas and have a great power to weight ratio. They were a blast at the drag strips. From 1968 on they were transformed into a larger and longer body style which really made them perfect for the drag strip. That’s why today cars such as this 1974 Chevy Nova remain remnants of a muscle car era where no holds were barred. This stunning muscle car is a great looking driver class car being offered for sale through Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois. Click here to review their walk-around video tour. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because the askiing price is $19,900. That’s a lotta’ car for the money.

1954 Chevrolet Handyman
This is an actual 1954 Chevrolet Tin Woody Wagon (although the “tin texture” has been painted over.) The owner presents it today as a Chevy Handyman Wagon. He says it was a daily driver, and has the 235 ci six cylinder engine, “just tuned” he says. The seller has it with him in Jupiter, Florida. You could have it inspected to get a better idea of the condition class. From the photos we expect it to be a driver class car at best. You will want to find out how it drives and how it handles freeway traffic. It will be our Deal of the Day on Sunday. The asking price is $18,000. Station wagons are a trending item in the collector car hobby.

1949 Ford Coupe
The 1949 Ford Coupe with the single “bullet” front grille was a popular “new” body style and look for that era. It was one of the first new body styles to come out after World War II. Anything different was popular. This 2-Door Coupe is a “good solid car says Haggle Me, an internet broker representing their collector client. They say the car comes from Florida, and has a stock flathead V8 engine, 3-speed manual transmission, converted 12-volt electrical system, dual exhaust, aftermarket air conditioning and nice custom interior. In their words, “This car runs and drives excellent!” It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their price: $19,900.

1960 Triumph TR3
If you have an adventurous spirit and a knack for working on British sports cars, this 1960 Triumph TR3 Roadster is a great find. It is being offered for sale through Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. Not a perfect car, the body needs some work and the top needs new cloth. But you don’t often see a ’60 this nice. It has wire wheels with two-eared knock-off wheel spinners, front-wheel disc brakes, SU dual carburetors, single exhaust outlet, Jaeger instruments, Lucas-branded ammeter gauge, convertible soft top frame, chrome bumpers, three-spoke steering wheel, whitewall tires, and side curtains on the side. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. I think you will agree that this is a lotta’ car for the money. They are asking $15,750.

1975 MG Midget Mark IV
Sometimes you just get lucky. This week a 1975 MG Midget Mark IV was listed by Cody’s Classic Cars in Wisconsin. Now most of these cars, if you find them in the Midwest, are badly in need of TLC. But here is one which they say has just had a real nice repaint over a solid Florida car. They say the interior even shows well. In the ad copy it says the car “runs and drives excellent,” and shows 44k miles. It has a new convertible top. Recent work includes, “new exhaust, all new brake lines, wheel cylinders, shoes and master cylinder. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. The asking price is $8,750.

1975 VW Beetle Convertbile
1 of 3,581 Cabriolets imported to the US in 1975, this red Volkswagen Beetle Convertible was fitted with a new black convertible top in 2022. It is being offered for sale at Cody’s Classic Cars in Wisconsin. The listing says it has a 1585cc 4cylinder engine with 4-speed manual transmission. They say the interior shows well with no rips or tears and is showing 63k miles. With a few nicks and scratches, it is at best a driver quality car. You should have a pre-purchase inspection to get a better read on the condition class. But most important, they say it runs and drives well. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. Their asking price is $14,900.

2004 Mercedes-Benz SL500
You can tell from the photos that this 2004 Mercedes-Benz SL500 has been well cared for. Look where they store it. A private party seller from Delray Beach, Florida listed it for sale. He says it is “gorgeous”with low mileage and “great curb appeal.” He says it performns as well as it looks. Still “runs, drives and looks as new.” It has the very desirable retractable hardtop/convertible. He says all services are up to date. But the best part is the price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $18,100.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
