The Amazing Bocar
Before Carroll Shelby’s Cobras and Jim Hall’s Chaparrals there was an American racer and car builder named Bob Carnes who built amazing race cars out of his shop in Colorado. They called them Bocars, and racing history will rate them as the “scurge of the Scarabs.” The rarest of these cars were known as Stilettos powered by a GMC 471 blower. They cut through the wind resistance like a knife.
Out of the blue this week, two Bocars were listed for sale on Cars-On-Line.com by a broker who represents high end collector cars. One was the rare No. 33, a 1959 Bocar Stiletto in USRRC livery the way it was raced in 1963 at Road America. Only three Stilettos are thought to have been built. This is one of the two survivors and the only supercharged Stiletto. It is known that Carnes raced this Stiletto at Daytona, Pikes Peak (in the snow) and even drag raced it. This is one of the two survivors and the only supercharged Stiletto.
Weighing in at 2,000 lbs, the Stiletto has slightly more than half its total weight on the rear wheels. With a GMC 471 blower, crank driven, pumping into a Rochester fuel injector and with a Racer Brown 37r roller cam, the 283 cubic inch Corvette engine does the quarter mile at close to 120 mph and 11.81 seconds.
With some recent upgrades, this Bocar Stiletto has a freshly rebuilt motor. The work was done by Ed Wenz, who is known as the V-8 Guru from Savannah Motorsports. You can have it inspected by contacting the Cars-On-Line Inspection Service. Hopefully it will appear at some of the vintage road rallies out East this summer.

Classic Car News This Week

Riveria GS at Raleigh
The collector car market is always changing and new trends in the market are of interest to us. So we were intrigued when the top sale at last week’s Raleigh Classic Auction was a 1965 Buick Riviera GS as an internet buyer placed the highest bid at $210,000. Yeah, that’s a new record for a Buick Riviera. What made it so attractive to the buyers at Raleigh? Not only was it a Gran Sport Riviera, but it came with a numbers matching LX code 425ci Super Wildcat engine which the factory rated at 360 horsepower. It was equipped with 2.25″ dual exhaust and the A9 handling package. With all that performance, this car came with all power options offered that year, and the one-year only retractable headlights. “Rare” gets rewarded, and this one is really rare. Is this a one-off top sale, or the beginning of a trend? Click here to review the top ten sales at the Raleigh Classic Auction last week.
Miller’s Rapid Transit Cuda
Recently we noted that the famous Rapid Transit Cuda sold at the Mecum Auction at Indy for $2.2 million. The Rapid Transit System promo cars were used by Chrysler to promote Mopar in 1970 and 1971. The heavily customized Rapid Transit Cuda was built by well known Michigan custom car builder Chuck Miller. Bob Boberg of eClassicAutos.com interviewed Miller at the Mecum Auction. Click here to view the video. It was a historic day and a vindication for Miller. His skill with building all steel customs is now part of our automotive history. Watch the video to get the inside story on the famous cars history has credited to Miller.

1969 Chevelle SS L89
One of the top classic car dealerships in the country changed hands this week when Rare Rides Company LLC took over the business of Shelton Classics in Mooresville, North Carolina. Rare Rides Company is an experienced, licensed and bonded consignment dealer in Mooresville, just up the road from Charlotte. Their facility has a “State-of-the-art” video suveillance and security system with a climate controlled environment. You will find their collector cars and trucks sprinkled throughout our New Listings this weekend. This real deal 1969 Chevelle SS L89 is a great example. It is a rare SS, one of only 400 L89’s to be produced by Chevrolet in ’69. It is seen here in Monaco (Hugger) Orange, a color only available on an SS 396 that year. Click here to view a walk-around video.
1969 Motion Camaro Z/28
Just when you figure you’ve seen about everything there is to see in the collector car market, something totally different comes along. Few cars have the story and provenance of this black on black 1969 Camaro Z/28 RS. The owner has verified with Joel Rosen that it is a rare Motion Camaro 427. It was sold at Baldwin Chevrolet in New York. Offered for sale today at RK Motors Charlotte, they believe that it was then modified by Motion Performance where it received its big block 427 ci V8 with Winters aluminum heads and a Motion big block hood. The rebuilt 427 now sports an EFI throttle body system. Talk about a fast car.

1963 Chevrolet Impala 2-Dr Hardtop
Oh, man, wait till you see this 1963 Chevrolet Impala 2-Door Hardtop in the video window above. We are impressed with the fit and finish. When you consider that it has a 383 stroker motor backed by a 700R4, this is a car you can take on the power tour. It has SS emblems but is not being represented as an SS. Air shocks in the rear and a Ford 9” rear end is amazing. It even has a Hotchkis suspension. They note that it may be eligible for an extended 10-year warranty protection plan. Look at that interior in the video.

Deals of the Day
1963 Oldsmobile Super 88
Just look at these photos of a 1963 Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday which was recently listed for sale at Diversion Motors in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. You don’t see these classic Oldsmobiles in this kind of condition. You’ll like the fit and finish with the lines flowing tightly front front to back. In 1963 Oldsmobile ran into trouble producing cars, so ones like this are very rare. The Oldsmobile 394 ci Rocket V8 remains orignal, although it now has a Holley 4-barrel with electric choke. A solid state ignition was added also. And it comes with power steering and power brakes. The front suspension has been converted to adjustable coil overs. It has a new dual exhaust. Have it inspected before you buy, but hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is $19,750
1941 Ford Deluxe Tudor
I hope you have your phone in your hand already, because you are going to have to move fast to take advantage of this deal. A 1941 Ford Deluxe Tudor Sedan has been listed by a private party seller from San Diego, California. The seller says it has a ’49 Mercury Flathead V8 engine converted to 12-volt. The car is very original and is described as a “survivor” with only 75,000 miles. The seller calls it “investment quality.” It has the 12-volt electric fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, 12 volt battery, new alternator, new starter, new hydraulic brake master cylinder, rebuilt carburetor and an accessory oil filter. The seller says the motor runs strong and the transmission shifts smooth. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. His asking price is only $16,000 in cash.
1929 Ford Model A
An internet broker known as Haggle Me comes up with some of our best deals here in the DEAL of the DAY. You will see them featured here often. Today they listed a 1929 Ford Model A 2-Door Sedan for sale. They tell us it “runs and drives great.” The limited number of photos shows us that the interior upholstery has been recently redone and appears beautiful. The engine compartment shows its use but remains clean. Altogether the appearance is solid and very presentable. Only a detailed vehicle pre-purchase inspection will be able to tell for sure, however. If it drives as good as it looks in the photos, this would be one to look into. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is $16,500.
1948 Ford Super Deluxe Tudor
Be sure to view all the photos on this 1948 Ford Super Deluxe 2-Door Sedan being offered for sale at Unique Specialty and Classic Cars out of Mankato, Minnesota. Then watch the full walk-around inspection with narrative by Unique. They do a great job of letting you know what kind of condition this car is in. Not a show car, but a very interesting driver is what we get from watching the video. There is some orange peel across the top and rear of the car (see it in the video.) It has a dual rear exiting exhaust. We like the original Ford wheel covers. Interior is all done and good. They start up the Flathead and let you hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. Their asking price is only $18,900. Hurry!
1979 Lincoln Mark V
Enjoying the peak of its popularity, the Lincoln Continental Mark V was the icon of excellence in automotive luxury in 1979. They were maintained with such reverence that many of these beautiful luxury cars remain in pristine condition and with low miles even today. Classic Car Liquidators in Sherman, Texas has once such car for sale thi week. Check the ad copy for a list of options. This one is in driver quality, but remains very clean inside and out. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $19,999.
1984 Dodge Power Ram
The name Power Wagon conjures up images of big Dodge trucks traversing treacherous terrain to run down the enemy in World War II. With some modification the term was used by Dodge in many iterations since. Here is a 1984 Dodge D150 Power Ram that was a special edition that year and had the name Royal SE Prospector 4X4 attached to it. That’s a lotta’ name for one truck. This Power Ram is in driver quality condition and being offered for sale at Unique Specialty & Classic Cars in Mankato, Minnesota. Click here to view a walk-around video and hear it start. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. Their asking price is $15,900.
1985 Camaro Z28
We always talk about “future collectibles” as cars that will gain in value as they age. Collectors like to speculate on what will increase in value as it gets older. Sold Thru Cars On Line
Here are some of the comments from happy sellers who were nice enough to tell us about their experience advertising on the Cars On Line website.
A Canadian collector from Alberta sold his 1967 Mustang Fastback S Code 390 ci V8 in just a few weeks. “The sale of my car was very easy thanks to Cars-On-Line.com,” he told us. Indeed, the S Codes are getting pretty hard to find in this market. He got a good price for it, too.
A California collector told us he sold his 1964 Dodge 330 2-Door to a friend who saw the ad. “… also i had 2 buyers that wanted a picture of my liscense,” he wrote. “… and you told me they were probably scams, thanks for the advise.” Always glad to help.
