GM Motorama Revisited

New Models for 1953

When Alfred P. Sloan hired Harley Earl to head up the new GM Design Department a whole new idea was brewing at General Motors. The thinking was that styling would drive the public’s desire for new cars. If your car looked a bit outdated, they could lure you in with the most updated automotive look and stance. The times, they were a-changing. And GM was ahead of the game when they started showing their newest design models by touring them around the country in what they called the GM Motorama: Parade of Progress. When GM came to town there would be a big parade with futuristic looking space age concept cars and the newest automotive designs for the coming year. In 1953, GM came up with the most aggressive new car stylings the U.S. had ever seen. And the GM Motorama was a glamorous way to expose the new car buying public to the “future of auto design.” They even deployed a fleet of 12 33-Foot display vehicles which would become known as Futurliners. These giant vehicles would lead the GM Motorama parade through small towns across the U.S.

This week, Legendary Motorcar Company, one of the premier collector car dealerships in the Western hemisphere, brought out a sampling of award winning cars that remind us of the effect the GM Motorama must have had on America. Although these are not the actual cars that were used during the GM Motorama, they do represent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own the Triple Crown of GM first-year models for ‘53. Here they are:

They listed a Carlsbad Black 1953 Buick Skylark Convertible (seen above), designed by GM to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Buick. The first-year Skylark stands as one of the most iconic Motorama-inspired automobiles ever produced. No expense was spared to restore this historically significant car to an extraordinary standard. Independent front suspension, live rear axle, and 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes were significant innovations for ’53. The sculpted Motorama lines were complemented by the Twin Turbine Dynaflow automatic transmission. And it came with power windows, power brakes, power steering and a power top. You can bet all that had a whopping impact on the spectators at the Motorama car shows.

Historians say the 1953 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible still stands as one of the most glamorous American cars. With hand-built limited production, it was always intended by Harley Earl to be a showpiece to make a statement about Cadillac’s design leadership. Only 532 Eldorado convertibles were produced in ’53. It was built to highlight Cadillac’s bold innovation for the GM Motorama. This black edition with the red leather interior has been meticulously restored. Legendary Motorcar Company tells us it has a factory correct interior that exudes luxury. The wraparound “Panoramic” windshield, flush rear fender skirts, and signature low beltline were significant styling elements that made spectators “owww” and “ahhhh” as they were rolled out for the Motorama shows.

Also new that year, the 1953 Oldsmobile 98 Fiesta Convertible was seen for the first time at the GM Autorama. It was the lowest production of GM’s Triple Crown of Motorama cars with only 458 produced. This is the only known Code 10 Black Fiesta convertible to exist. It comes from a well known collection where it won Best in Class at the Oldsmobile Nationals and has achieved the AACA Grand National Senior Award. This hand-built car was Oldsmobiles top-of-the-line model and featured advanced conveniences and upscale appointments. It has a Rocket V8 and the smooth shifting 4-speed Hydra-Matic transmission.

Truly these were the glory days of automotive design. The first Corvette was part of this Motorama display, as were many unique concept cars such as the Buick Wildcat, Pontiac Parisienne, Oldsmobile F-88 and Buick LeSabre. Click here for an historic video reminder of what the GM Motorama experience was like. This selection of ‘53’s represents a moment in history. They would be a great centerpiece for a high end collection. You might never get a chance to own three like this again.

Classic Car News This Week

New Shelby GT350 Convertible

The new Shelby GT350 Convertible may be unveiled at the Barrett-Jackson Auction next week. On Saturday, January 24, 2026 they say Ford will be selling a mystery car in a charity auction with all proceeds to benefit a worthy cause. Although Ford and the Barrett-Jackson have been very hush about it, we are expecting that this will be the first look at the new 2026 Shelby GT350 Convertible. The new Shelby GT350 is purported to feature an 810 horsepower 5.0 Liter V8, said to be the most powerful Shelby GT350 ever. That will be accomplished by using a 3.0 Whipple supercharger, and the new convertible will be available in  both an automatic and manual shift version. The new Ford Shelby GT350 convertible is actually being produced by Shelby American, the company founded by Carroll Shelby in Las Vegas. Shelby American has said that it will update the intake and exhaust to a Borla Catback system; and their chassis will use lowering springs and updated sway bars, along with 20-inch forged alloy wheels. A short-throw shifter will be used on the manual transmission version. Sales will be available at Ford dealerships in the U.S. They are whispering that only 1,000 of these GT350 convertibles will be built.

January Car Shows

A legendary 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO will be the featured sale at the Kissimmee 2026 Mecum Auction this week. Boasting a rich racing history, they say the GTO still has much of its original equipment. It is called the Bianco Speciale, and they think the white original color will make it more valuable. Only 36 GTO Ferraris were produced from 1962 to 1964, and this is the only one produced in white. It was driven in competition by such famous racers as Graham Hill and Jack Sears. Mecum believes it could draw bids as high as $70 million. (Click here to follow our photo journalist, Bob Boberg of eClassicAutos.com, as he covers the Mecum Auction.)

But the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee is just one of the great auctions coming up this month. Check out the Cars-On-Line.com Car Show Calendar to find more top collector car shows and auctions for January. You’ll find info on the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale and the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California. Click here to read the COL Car Show Calendar. Then bookmark it so you won’t miss any of the top shows this year.

Ferrari 330 America

A rare 1963 Ferrari 330 America was listed for sale this week by Gullwing Motor Cars in New York. It is one of only 50 ever produced in Maranello. The matching numbers example has been documented by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini. He says it was the 28th car produced in this model line. It has a chassis 5039 number showing it was completed at the factory on October 23, 1963, and was shipped to New York on October 30th. Sold to a California owner, they say it was an original California car delivered new back in the day. Gullwing says it is a project car that will need a redo because it was found in storage after 20 years. Yet, because it is so rare, it is a treasured find. “This is an ideal candidate for a straight forward restoration,” Gullwing said in its description.

Chevy Suburban Lowrider

The GAA Classic Auction has listed dozens of impressive cars and trucks to be sold at their Winter Auction in Greensboro, North Carolina next month, February 19-21, 2026. Since our Lowrider Section is one of the most popular sections on our website, we thought our readers would want to view this custom 1965 Chevy Suburban which will cross the auction block on Saturday, February 21 as Lot # 90. It was custom built with Air Ride on all four corners so it can be slammed to the ground. It has a 4-link and tubular control arms with custom designed 26×14 and 24×9 Billet Specialties wheels. Under the hood is a ZZ4 engine matched with a 700R4 automatic transmission. The interior is new with custom built bucket seats and console. The frame on this big rig is fully custom. It is one of the hundreds of incredible cars and trucks to be sold next month at one of America’s most interesting auctions.

Auctions

The GAA Classic Winter Auction will be held February 19-21, 2026 at their permanent auction facility called The Palace in Greensboro, North Carolina. Dedicated to their following of classic car, muscle car and unique specialty vehicle buyers, the GAA Classic is well respected in the collector car community as a source of very desirable collector cars and trucks. This permanent facility comes with comfortable seating for over 500 guests, multiple dining options, and full time staff members who make selling and buying convenient and fun! This year we noticed an extraordinary selection of muscle cars in their inventory being offered at No Reserve. Here are some from the Chris Agee Collection.

1970 Boss 302 Mustang

A sharp looking 1970 Boss 302 Mustang will be crossing the auction block on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at No Reserve. Featured in Calypso Coral finish, this Boss Mustang comes from the Chris Agee Collection. The finish is the result of a rotisserie restoration during which the engine was rebuilt, balanced and blue printed in 2015. It has a contrasting black interior, power disc brakes, center console and rear deck spoiler. The 302 produces 352 hp at 5400 rpm. Built at Dearborn, this Mustang has power steering, smog control, a correct carburetor, Magnum 500 wheels and sport slats. It is documented with a copy of the Marti Report, dealer invoice and warranty card (as shown in the ad photos.) Click here to view a walk-around video and hear it run.

1970 Cougar Eliminator 428 SCJ

Another car from the Chris Agee Collection is a Competition Orange 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator 428 SCJ. It will cross the auction block on Saturday at No Reserve. Unrestored, the Eliminator was featured in a January 2000 issue of Mustangs and Fords magazine. Chris says it is like “nearly a Brand-New Car” showing 48k miles (although the title says mileage exempt.) He says the Goodyear F70-14 Polyglas tires are still the originals. It has a 4-speed manual transmission with factory Drag Pack and 3.91 Traction Lok gears. It is documented with the owner’s card and bill of sale. The interior has the Décor Group, Hurst T-Handle shifter, power windows and power steering.

1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convt

They also have a 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible being offered from the Chris Agee No Reserve Collection. It is one of only 47 ever painted in WT6066 Special Yellow. It addition to the GT equipment, this special Shelby has original black bucket seats, power steering and tilt-away steering wheel. Under the hood is a 428 Cobra Jet V8 mated to a C6 automatic transmission with 3.50 Traction-Lok axle. It has a white convertible top, Visibillity Group, power front disc brakes and a tach. You will find a copy of the Marti Report and a build sheet in the ad photos. It is well documented that Carroll Shelby considered the 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible his favorite Shelby Mustang. He named it the “King of the Road” after his favorite song by Roger Miller. Only 517 KR convertibles were produced. 1968 was the first year for a GT500 convertible.

Video Ads

1972 Corvette Convertible

Advertisers are sometimes intimidated by the prospect of shooting a video of their car. Even though Cars-On-Line.com allows you to embed a video of your vehicle in your ad at no extra charge, many people think their video has to be studio quality. Nothing could be further from the truth. All you have to do is walk around your car or truck and show all the panels and gaps. The audio will record the sound of your engine automatically. Here is a 1972 Corvette Convertible from North Carolina. The private party seller does a simple walk-around and uploaded it to You Tube. Then we just embed it in his ad. Look at the body panels and gaps. The video doesn’t lie. We have seen it happen over and over. When a seller adds a video to their ad they sell more quickly. Click the video window above to see what we mean.

Have you seen our CarsOnLine.tv Classic Car Video marketplace? To feature your car on CarsOnLine.tv, just add a video to your Cars-On-Line.com ad. Video ads have become the most important development for internet sellers. Just upload your video to YouTube and we’ll embed your video in your Cars On Line.com ad at no extra charge.

Collector Cars with Low Miles

Blacktop Dodge Challenger R/T

Highly collectible, this 2013 Dodge Challenger R/T is being offered for sale with low miles. This is one of the limited Blacktop Editions with a little more “attitude” than a plain jane Challenger. It puts a big of swagger in the ride. This one is selling this week at Haggle Me, an internet broker. From the sleek black accents to the 20-inch wheels, the Blacktop Edition puts sun glasses on an already impressive ride. The upgrades include a little quicker performance, too, with 0 to 60 possible in just 4.5 seconds. The interior has sport seats, infotainment center and premium sound. The best part about this ride, though, is the low miles. Haggle Me says it still has just 4k on the odometer. This is like buying a new car.

Here are more recent Low Miles additions:

2002 Corvette Z06, Classic Auto Mall, PA, 36k actual miles

2003 Corvette Coupe, Classic Auto Mall, PA, 45k actual miles

2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, Classic Car Deals, 25,957 original miles

1994 Cadillac Fleetwood Brghm, WeBe Autos, NY, 28k original miles

You’ll find these and hundreds more in our Low Miles Section online now.

Project Vehicles for Restoration

1936 Bentley 4 1/4 Litre

Beverly Hills Car Club has come up with some interesting collector car projects for those of us with mechanical backgrounds. This one is not only interesting, but might be an easy redo. They just listed a 1936 Bentley 4 ¼ Liter Saloon. What is so special about this car is that its coachwork was done by Park Ward, a revered artisan back in the day. It is a right-hand-drive version, finished in an elegant two-tone livery of Deep Green over Black fenders and upper surfaces. The interior also is in dark green with period walnut wood trim. We could go on and on about its timeless elegance, but alas, the vintage Bentley does not run currently. However it could be an easy refresh for the right buyer.

2001 Lexus LS 430

A well maintained luxury car with low miles is what everybody is looking for as a second car. That’s why this private party seller from Florida listed his low mile 2001 Lexus LS 430 sedan for $35,000 when he first put it on the resale market. He says it is a one-owner with just 57,900 miles. It has the 4.3 liter V8 and a 5-speed automatic transmission. He says it “has been meticulously cared for since new.” It is equipped with dual-zone climate control, heated and ventilated leather seats, a premium audio system with SiriusXM, multistage air bags, four-channel anti-lock brakes and vehicle skid control. You can see the condition of the interior from the photos. But just this week he dropped his price to $16,000. That is a decent discount.

Muscle Car Clones

Shelby GT350 Hertz Tribute

We have been referring to the upcoming GAA Classic Auction as a “must see” sale next month. One of the reasons is because they have so many great muscle cars to liquidate. Here is an excellent example. This 1966 Shelby GT350 Hertz Tribute is a very authentic looking clone of the legendary Rent-A-Racers built for Hertz Rent-A-Car by Shelby American. They tell us it has been fully restored to the Hertz livery and styling. It has the 289 ci V8 with a manual transmission and disc brakes. They say the paint is show quality. This black and gold beauty will cross the auction block in Greensboro, North Carolina next month in the Saturday sale, being offered at No Reserve.

The following are more recently listed Muscle Car Clones:

1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass, Classic Car Deals, MI, 442 Convertible

1972 Chevelle, Super Sport Classics, FL, SS tribute

1970 Chevelle, Super Sport Classics, SS tribute

1972 Chevelle, Super Sport Classics, FL, SS Tribute

Deals of the Day

1963 Ford Galaxie 500XL

A Corinthian White 1963 Ford Galaxie 500XL 2-Door Hardtop was listed for sale this week by Cruisin Classics in Columbus, Ohio. Although the paint is a respray, it remains in its original color with a red interior. With all the chrome and brightwork intact, this car does look good in the photos. You can have it inspected to get a good idea of the condition class, but other than minor dings, scratches, and fading paint, it will look good at 10 feet. Cruisin Classics says it is in good condition. Click here to watch their detailed inspection video and take it for a test drive. It has the 352 V8 engine and a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. They say it has a “newer” gas tank and some fresh undercoating underneath. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday, Their asking price is $22,995.

1947 Chrysler New Yorker

Chrysler cars have always been elegant and comfortable to ride in. That is Chrysler’s signature. This 1947 Chrysler New Yorker Club Coupe is a good example. It is the embodiment of 1940’s style. It is being offered for sale by the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania. They tell us it has just 73,054 actual miles. The sweeping body lines on this Hawaiian Blue Chrysler Club Coupe are in balance with the long roofline. While there are some chips and scratches in the paint, it looks good from 10 feet as you can see in the photos. It has elements of Art Deco design on the interior with its jukebox styled dash and trim. A Fluid Drive transmission transfers power from the 323.5 L-head 8 cylinder engine. The Fluid Drive was to be Chrysler’s claim to fame back in the day. You will note some flaky surface rust on the underside. But they say it is still solid. A pre-purchase inspection might produce more information on that. Read their description of how it runs and drives. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is $24,000.

1953 MG TD Roadster

After World War II there was a cult of ex-military personnel that told of the amazing two-seater sports cars that they encountered in Britain and Europe. It created such a demand for these cars that MG started exporting their MG TD’s to the U.S. This week, Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles listed one of these original British sports cars for sale. This 1953 MG TD Roadster is red with a matching red interior. The distictive little TD has an inline 4 cylinder engine with SU dual carburetors and 4-speed manual transmission. The white convertible top is shown in the ad photos. Since they telll us it is mechanically sound we would consider that it could be a clean, driver quality sports car. Only a pre-purchase inspection would be able to tell for sure. It has Jaeger/Lucas instrumentation, side curtains, chrome accents, bonnet louvers, a 3-spoke steering wheel, and 15-inch steel wheels with MG-branded hubcaps. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is $14,750.

1956 Oldsmobile Holiday

If you are looking for an affordable classic from the 1950’s this 1956 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday 4-Door Sedan may be right for you. It is also being offered for sale at Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles this week. Finished in its factory two-tone combination of Alcan White over Turquoise metallic paint, it has a matching Turquoise and white deluxe interior. It is represented as a California car with a Rocket V8 engine. It is equipped with power steering, drum brakes, power windows, power adjustable front bench seat and whitewall tires. The automatic transmission and Holley 4-barrel carburetor are said to deliver confident performance. It also has a Pioneer radio, drive-side rear view mirror and a fender-mounted antenna. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday since their advertised price is $18,750.

1931 Plymouth 30 U Coupe

Almost one hundred years ago this Plymouth 30 U Rumble Coupe came off the line at the Plymouth plant, one of just 5,850 produced. The Spruce Green paint was redone in 1982. It is being offered for sale at the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania. They tell us that they were surprised at how well the Plymouth ran and handled. There are some imperfections in the body and paint, but you can see it presents well in the photos. The interior panels are intact but have stains and look weathered. The undedrcarriage appears solid in the photos, but has fluid stains from leaks (as you might expect from an old car.) The rumble seat is black vinyl and shows a touch of age but remains in very nice shape (see photo.) This unusual find will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday next week. Their asking price is $18,000.

1963 Ford Thunderbird

A very nice 1963 Ford Thunderbird appears in the newsletter this week as listed by WeBe Autos, an internet broker representing their New York state client. They tell us it is in excellent condition with only 46k miles. The V8 engine is described as “reliable,” running “nice and cool.” Although it has never been restored they tell us the paint is as good as it looks in the photos. It has always been stored in a heated garage. They say it “looks and runs great.” The front seats (covered in the photos) may need some reupholstery. The engine compartment is clean for being unrestored. You might want to have a pre-purchase inspection done to find out how the undercarriage looks. But the car looks pretty sharp overall in the photos. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is $18,995.

1981 Corvette Coupe

Are those miles correct? You might want to have a pre-purchase inspection done on to verify. But this 1981 Corvette T-Top Coupe looks pretty good in the photos. The ad says it has just 19,320 miles showing on the odometer. Red with a red interior, it was recently purchased from a private collection. It is being offered for sale by Classic Car Deals, a classic car dealer with a showroom in Cadillac, Michigan. They tell us the paint is original. However, they say the paint is not perfect and may show its age in some places. The small block V8 engine is said to be strong running, smooth and dependable. They claim it would make a real nice daily driver. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week if it lasts that long. Their asking price is $13,995.

Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
