Legendary Super Light
In 1954, Mercedes-Benz decided to make a statement to the automotive world. They designed and produced their legendary 300SL Gullwing coupe which mesmerized everyone who saw it. Not only was it the most impressive mechanical achievement of its time with its canteleavered Gullwing doors, but it was the fastest factory production car made. The racing version W194 model won the 24 Hours of Lemans in 1952, taking both first and second place. It also won first and second place at the Nurbergring that year.
The 300SL Gullwing is regarded by historians as one of the most significant designs in automotive history. This week the Legendary Motorcar Company posted a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing for sale. It is one of the 1,400 Gullwings produced from 1954 through 1957 by Mercedes. It features a lightweight tubular frame and innovative Bosch mechanical fuel injection setup, giving its 3.0-liter inline-six up to 240 horsepower—exceptional for the era.
The 300SL was a visually stunning design because of its Gullwing doors. But the innovation did not stop there. In addition, Mercedes also deployed the first Bosch mechanical fuel injection, a coil spring independent front suspension, plus coil spring and swing-axle rear suspension. Of particular note, the 300 SL was the first introduced in the United States before it was shown in Germany, and when it was unveiled in New York on February 6th, 1954, it took the automotive world by storm. The “SL” (translated to English as Super Light) moniker reflected the pioneering use of welded tubular-steel frame construction. And it used aluminum in the dash, hood, doors and trunk lid to reduce weight.
In 1954 Mercedes came out with a street version Mercedes 300SL Gullwing for the new car buying public. In doing so they kept the tubular frame and fully independent front suspension. It was capable, in factory form, to reach speeds of 160 miles per hour, making it the fastest production car in the world at that time.

Classic Car News This Week
Old Steel Rules
An interesting Facebook post went viral when it was published on The Space Coast Rocket page recently. A 1973 Chrysler New Yorker was rear ended by a late model Kia 4-door sedan. The Chrysler barely has a scratch (except for the license plate fell off.) Meanwhile the late model car is totaled. Now there are reasons why late model cars collapse to absorb the impact for safety reasons. But it makes for a funny photo anyway. From the comments on the post a whole lotta’ people got a kick out of it. Old Iron Rules. If you are logged into Facebook you can read about it here. Same thing happened to us when we were going to the Back To The 50s Car Show in St. Paul, Minnesota. A little Nissan sedan ran into the trailer hitch on the back bumper of our Chevy Silverado. The front fenders and hood puckered up on the Nissan. Not even a scratch on our bumper.

Ringbrothers Copperback Mustang
A famous Ringbrothers build called the “Copperback,” a 1967 Mustang Fastback Restomod which won the Mothers Shine Award, was a top finalist in the Goodguys Nationals in 2006. It is being offered for sale this week at The Throttlestop in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. In 2020, this car was advertised for sale on the Cars-On-Line.com website, at which time we did a full page story on it. Click here to review our story from 2020. In 2016 it was returned to the Ringbrothers shop in Spring Green, Wisconsin for updates. The brilliant Glasurit Copper Burnt Orange Metallic paint and various accents are still magnificent. The Copperback features over 70 meticulously crafted billet-aluminum components, giving the car a mechanical sophistication and visual sparkle that instantly sets it apart. The 19-inch iForged three-piece wheels give it a unique look and stance. Click here to view a walk-around video to see how it looks today, and hear it run.
1970 Dodge Challenger T/A
Mopar muscle cars are hot in the collector car market. This 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A was just listed by a private party seller from Angola, Indiana. It won’t last the week. That’s how hot these Mopars are right now, especially a T/A Challenger. Used to be that we would see several listed every week. But recently we are lucky to see one for sale per month. Nobody wants to sell them because they are so popular. The seller says the interior is all original. He says it comes with a correct motor, transmission and rear end. The block is a warranty block. He says “all numbers match,” i.e. dash, door, cowl, radiator support, fender tags and title. Most important to our readers, he says it “runs and drives excellent.”
Rare 1957 E Bird
When you consider the potential upside value on this 1957 Ford Thunderbird E Code Convertible, it might be the “steal” of the week on the Cars-On-Line.com website. The rare classic Thunderbird is being offered for sale at Mershon’s in Springfield, Ohio. The Colonial White E Bird is one of only 1,500 ever produced. It was a one-year only production, as Ford was experimenting with performance tweaks on the T-Bird. The E Code meant that it was powered by a 312 dual quad V8 with a signature “double hump” air filter cover making room for those twin 4-barrels. This one comes from the factory with air conditioning, an auxiliary hardtop and stainless wheel covers. Check the price. You won’t find another one at this price point any time soon.

A classic muscle car dealer in New Jersey has a very rare 1968 Mustang 428 Cobra Jet for sale this week. Wait till you see the burnout in the video (click the video window above to view.) It is being offered for sale at No Reserve Classics. They tell us it is original and numbers matching. The 428 Cobra Jet engine has been rebuilt, and it now comes with a McLoed clutch, H-pipe exhaust and Flowmasters. It was a Best in Class winner at the Tasca Ford Mustang Event in 2024. They say it was the No. 3 car built out of just 50 ordered in 1968.

1970 Plymouth AAR Cuda
Plymouth AAR Cudas and Dodge Challenger T/A’s are hot right now in the collector car market. You won’t find them for sale that often anymore. So here is the next best thing. A 1970 Plymouth AAR Cuda tribute was listed by Streetside Classics in Atlanta this week. It has a “strong 406 stroker V8” and a 5-speed manual transmission. It has power steering and power brakes. They say the paint is almost flawless in Vitamin C Orange with the black strobe stripe. For authenticity, a Six Pack carburetor setup is installed on top of the intake giving it consistent fuel delivery. It has a Centerforce clutch and puts the power to the ground with an 8 ¾ inch rear end. And, yes, it has the side exit dual exhaust.

Deals of the Day
1966 Dodge Polara Convertible
For some reason no statistics are available for this 1966 Dodge Polara Convertible in terms of production numbers. The Polara was the base level model for that year and who knows how many convertibles there were. It could be pretty rare. It is being offered for sale this week at Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois. They tell us that the consignor says it is numbers matching and original with original miles. It has the 383 ci V8 engine with a column shifted automatic transmission. They say it was sitting for quite some time, so it may need some TLC. You should have it inspected before you buy. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is $12,900.
1940 Oldsmobile Series 70
Beverly Hills Car Club just listed this 1940 Oldsmobile Series 70 Sedan at a very good price point. And they say it is mechanically sound. Finished in its factory color of Shasta Green, the car features a red interior. It has West Coast roots and is sporting a California license plate. The engine is a Stright 6 with a 3-speed transmission on the column. It has 16-inch steel wheels with Lester whitewall tires. Note the Oldsmobile hubcaps. Some features include bench seating, dual-side rearview mirrors, pivoting vent windows, push button radio, and a fender-mounted antenna. You can look through literally dozens of detailed photos on the ad page. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is $10,750.
1947 Ford Business Coupe
A private party seller from New Hampshire posted his classic Ford for sale this week. The black 1947 Ford Deluxe Business Coupe still has a Flathead V8 engine, now with high compression heads, a four-barrel carburetor and a 12-volt electrical system. Looking good from every angle in the Slide Show photos on the ad page, the seller says the body and frame are in very good condition. With a few small blemishes showing, the paint still takes a shine from 10-feet away. He says it runs beautifully. It does have front disc brakes and new Black Diamond Classic wide whitewall tires. He says the three-on-a-tree column shifted transmission shifts smoothly. You can have it inspected before your buy. However, it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is $18,500.
1967 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible
Beverly Hills Car Club also listed a 1967 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible for sale this week at a very good price point. The factory Crystal Blue finish coplements a Midnight Blue interior. It was produced back in the early years of the luxury car market in America. This big blue Oldsmobile has an automatic transmission with a V8 engine and Quadrajet carburetor. The white convertible folding top has power and it comes with stylish fender skirts. Options include power windows, lap belts, driver-side rearview mirror, vent windows, quarter windows, and a push-button radio. It stands as a testament to the “golden years” of automotive manufacturing when foreign competition still had no effect on our production. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. The asking price is only $14,750.
1930 Ford Pickup
Washington blue is one of those few colors that Henry Ford was known to use other than black which was his favorite because it was cheap. But the color was first introduced in 1931, so this truck does not have original color. This is a 1930 Ford Model A Pickup which looks great in its current state. It w. as restored in 1990 it was upgraded with electronic ignition and powder coated wheels. The Washington Blue paint has a gold pinstripe. It is being offered for sale at a good price through the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania. They tell us the textured vinyl roof is in “fantastic condition,” always a relief to know when buying one of these early Fords. You should have it inspected to find out more. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. Their asking price is $19,000.
1960 Ford F100 Pickup
Here is one you don’t see everyday anymore. It is a 1960 Ford F100 Pickup which was used as a mobile bar in the Fort Collins, Colorado area the past few years. She was affectionately named “Dolly” by patrons. She looks well used today. It is currently on consignment through Classic Car Deals. Some of the updates include a new radiator, new carburetor and fuel pump. A replacement transmission was installed, and lap belts were added for safety. The interior was custom done at one point with blue velvet material and a leather bench seat. The wood bed panels were installed for serving but can easily be removed. They say it has a functional tailgate with secure latches. Some repairs needed are noted in the ad copy. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is $15,995.
1998 BMW Z3 Roadster
Looking beautiful in the photos, this 1998 BMW Z3 Convertible represents what we all look for in a classic convertible sports car, low miles and great looks. Yes, it is currently being offered for sale at Unique Classic Cars in Mankato, Minnesota. They tell us it has only 27,681 actual miles from new, and comes with a clean Carfax report. It is powered by a 2.8L dual overhead cam inline 6 cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission for that definitive sports car ride. Unique tells us that the air blows cold, and it features a power-operated convertible top, power windows, mirrors, cruise control, power seats, and heated seats, complemented by a Kenwood aftermarket stereo system.
