Rare Airbox Corvette
A classic Corvette which was just listed for sale this week might just be the rarest and most valuable of its kind for sale today. It is a red 1957 Airbox Corvette, a tanker with the big brakes. All Corvette collectors know that Corvettes were born to race. Chevrolet’s Corvette guru, Zora Duntov, was in it for the racing. His innovations were all designed to give Corvette an edge at the track. So, in 1957, his engineers not only designed the Ramject fuel injection system that Rochester would build for Chevrolet, but he also added features that would be advantages for Corvette racers, such as a big 36.5-gallon fuel tank and bigger brake calipers with bigger rotors for stopping power. These were options that could be ordered from the factory.
This week, a 1957 Airbox Fuelie Corvette with the big brakes and 36.5-gallon fuel tank was listed for sale in the Cars-On-Line Corvette Section. This is a highly sought after Corvette! Only a little over 1,000 Corvettes were equipped with the Rochester fuel injection system in ’57. This is one of just 43 that was ordered with the “airbox,” big brakes and larger fuel tank. The word “airbox” refers to a cold air induction system to cool the fuel injection and improve performance. Cool dense air is known to improve efficiency for fuel injection. The RPO 579E option included the airbox, along with a 4-speed manual transmission, 8,000 rpm tachometer mounted on the steering column and heavy-duty suspension and brakes. The big brake package included heavy-duty springs and coils for the suspension. With so few ever produced, the Airbox Corvettes are the “holy grail” for Corvette collectors.
The New Jersey seller of this Airbox Corvette says it had a frame off restoration some years ago. He says the block is numbers matching, although it may have been restamped. The engine remains original with high compression and high lift cam. He says it has been professionally dialed in and runs well. The fuel injection unit is still the original one. He says the Shoreline Beige interior is “mint.” It comes with the original hardtop and a Beige soft top.
This is an amazing find and well worth your effort to have it inspected.
