Buick’s Gran Sport
The 1972 Buick Gran Sport Stage 1 Convertible is one of the most highly coveted muscle cars of all time. Not only was it fast at the track, it was a young executive’s dream car back in the day. After all, it was comfortable enough to wow your girlfriend, and torquey enough to take on Chevelles at a stoplight. But beyond the muscle car mysteria, there were a few very special versions of the Gran Sport Stage 1’s produced in 1972 that will make history. This is the story of one of those cars.
The first 25 Stage 1 convertible Buick Gran Sports produced in the summer of ’71 for the 1972 production year were sent directly to the Buick Zone Offices across the USA. All 25 of these Zone Office cars were painted Flame Orange (paint code 65) with a white convertible top (Code A) and a white bench seat interior. Each one had the Stage 1 performance option, Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmission, power disc brakes, fast variable ratio power steering, Sonomatic radio, a stereo tape player and rear speaker. Of the 25 Zone Office cars, only 11 are known to exist today.
This 1972 Buick GS Stage 1 Convertible was the number nine Zone car sent to Cincinnati, Ohio. Later it was consigned to Tatone Buick for retail sale. The historic GS 455 car is now being offered for sale this week by Classic Car Deals, an internet broker. They say it has had a body-on restoration with very nice paint and good body panels. The interior, as seen in the photos, grades out well, and it has a new convertible top.
They tell us that the 455 engine has been built to “better than ’72 specs.” With correct casting numbers, the engine has many upgrades, including ARP bolts, better compression forged pistons, hi flow stainless Stage 1 valves and it is a true roller. The Stage 1 carb has been rebuilt. The factory GS Stage 1 four-barrel was rated at 270 horsepower. The original numbers matching 400 Turbo transmission has been rebuilt with NOS modulator and new HD Coan converter. Upgrades to original include a tach, AM/FM radio and rear lower control arms and sway bar.
Power and luxury was at a premium in 1972 as time was beginning to sunset on the muscle car era. This is one of the last great muscle cars built in America.

WorldWide Auction Wrapup
It was quite an historic event last weekend when the WorldWide Auctioneers held their Enthusiasts Tour and Auction in Auburn, Indiana. Their auction had some of the most rare and desirable vintage motorcars we have seen in a long time. The sale that was the mosting interesting to our Facebook fans happened when a 1971 Plymouth Cuda 440 6-Pack crossed the auction floor. Hotly contested bidding ended when an internet bidder plucked it away for $351,000. For our Facebook fans who were watching with us it was an interesting way to spend a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. Their next auction will be on Labor Day Weekend during the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg Festival.
This Weeks Featured Stories
1957 Ford Thunderbird E Code
First generation Ford Thunderbirds were extremely popular back in 1957. But not all early Ford Thunderbirds were created equal. The rarest of the production Baby Birds are what we call “E Code” Thunderbirds. They came with a pair of special 2X4 carbs atop the 312 ci V8 with an unusual air cleaner and functional hood scoop producing 270 horsepower. That was a 30 horsepower increase over the D-Code standard T-Birds. Today, Ideal Classic Cars in Venice, Florida has a black 1957 Ford Thunderbird E Code for sale in the highly desirable Gunmetal Gray color (correct color) with a Colonial White porthole auxiliary hardtop. Check the photos for the glimmering chrome work. See the finned aluminum valve covers and dual exhaust.
International Scouts Are Hot
The resurgence of classic Sport Utility vehicles such as the Ford Bronco has led collector car investors to look at some other forgotten older treasures. One of the off-road 4X4 SUV’s that has been going up in value lately is the International Scout. For instance, here is a 1978 International Scout II which was just posted for sale by GearHead Classics in Sherman, Texas. Undervalued until just recently, you can still buy this one at a discount to what you would pay for a Bronco or Blazer. This one comes with 15-inch aluminum wheels and a Warn winch. They say it has a new soft top, as well. Click here to view a walk-around video and hear it run. Then be sure to view all the photos of the undercarriage.
The Perfect Resto Mod
Our readers know a great restomod custom when they see one. Here is a 1969 Camaro RS Z/28 which has undergone the type of top level restoration that brings big money at auctions like the Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale. It has a Detroit Speed chassis with front subframe and TIG-welded tubular control arms. The engine is a supercharged LT4 V8 with Pro-Flo XT fuel injection boosting 825 horsepower. With Dakota Digital gauges and Budnik 20-inch wheels, the Z/28 looks aggressive from every angle. It has a Currie 9-inch with Detroit Speed Quadra Link suspension. Click here to watch the exciting video and hear it wind out. Whether you are looking for Pro Touring or just plain muscle car enjoyment, this is your next ride.
Auctions
We’re getting excited to head for North Carolina to experience the Raleigh Classic Spring Auction, May 30-31, 2025. Cars-On-Line.com will be heading for Youngsville, North Carolina for the Raleigh Classic Auction at the Capitol Auto Auction facility. From past auctions we’ve covered there our readers know the Raleigh Classic is one of the best auctions to buy true low miles collector cars. Many of the top collector car dealers throughout the Southeastern states will be there. They say there will be over 300 choice vehicles in the sale. The Raleigh Classic takes pride in curating the best cars in the hobby for the two-day event. For example, here are a few we will be watching.
1932 Pierce Arrow
On Saturday, May 31, we want to see this 1932 Pierce Arrow Model 54 Brougham cross the auction floor. It is believed to be an unrestored example. Man, is that rare. It has had one repaint in the 1950’s. They say there are only 18 examples of this Model 54 left in existence. It is equipped with its original numbers matching “Straight 8” engine and a 3-speed floor shifted manual transmission. We can’t wait to see and hear it start, run and drive. It is a great example of the type of original classic you can expect when you travel to Youngsville for this wonderful little auction show.
1953 Mercury Monterey
Have you noticed the increasing interest in classic 1950’s Mercury cars? After taking a back seat to early Fords for decades, a new appreciation for the classic Mercury’s is happening. So this 1953 Mercury Monterey Convertible naturally peaked our interest. It will be offered for sale to the highest bidder in the Saturday sale here in Youngsville. After being in the same prominent collection for the past 20 years, it will now be available to bid on at the Raleigh Classic. They say it is highly original and comes with a 225 ci Flathead V8. The Merc-O-Matic transmission was an option that year. The combination of Bittersweet paint and Bittersweet and Ivory leather interior makes a handsome appearance. It is very well optioned.
1940 Ford Pickup
Since the 1940 Ford pickups with the teardrop front headlamps are among the most desirable classic pickups in the collector car market, we will be on the lookout for this one as it crosses the auction floor at the Raleigh Classic. The 1940 Ford Pickup in Royal Blue paint and black fenders is a smart look. They say the body was removed and taken down to bare metal during a meticulous restoration. They say the body was in excellent condition. The bed is done in oak wood and a custom travel trunk is done in several layers of varnish. But this is no ordinary build. The vintage Flathead block was sourced from Canada, ported and given an Isky cam, Edelbrock hi-comp polished aluminum heads, new Stromberg 97 carbs, and Mallory ignition. They say this show ready pickup lacks nothing.

Ross Customs has done it again. They have a nice clean 1972 Chevrolet Nova SS for sale. Only this one’s got a 502 under the hood. The slick Hugger Orange paint is said to be basecoat clearcoat and sanded and wheeled smooth. Check out the stainless window trim and new weather stripping in this walk-around video inspection. With 15” American Racing wheels, this one is the one you want. Click the video window above to see the chrome, factory Soft Ray tinted glass, Vintage AC and heat, power disc brakes, power steering and aluminum radiator. This is your ride. Nicely priced. Collector Cars with Low Miles
1999 Camaro Z28 Brickyard 400
Since the Pace Car for the 1999 Brickyard 400 was a Z/28 convertible, there were also 45 parade cars used for the event. Parade cars or festival cars are often given to officials and celebrities for their use during race week. Then they are used in race day activities for parade laps around the track prior to the race. This 1999 Camaro Z28 Brickyard 400 Convertible is one of those cars. It was listed for sale this week by its private party seller out of Michigan. He says it still has only 20,000 miles on it. To find an event car like this one with so few miles is really rare.
Here are more recent Low Miles additions:
1971 Olds Cutlass Supreme Convt, Haggle Me, 33k miles
1956 Ford Fairlane, East Coast Classics, NC, 45k miles
1982 Chevrolet C10 Scottsdale from Lexington, NC
1976 Buick Electra, Laguna Classic Cars, CA
You’ll find these and hundreds more in our Low Miles Section online now.
Project Vehicles for Restoration
1972 Chevelle
If you are looking to restore a Chevelle as a restomod or for Pro Touring, this might give you a jump up on your project. Here is a 1972 Chevelle project car being offered for sale by a private seller from Kansas. The seller has lost interest in the project, although he says the paint and body has been done. He says he also has “lots and lots” of parts to go along with it. The engine is a 383, and he was looking to make a tribute car out of it. He is looking for someone who might have a “passion” for finishing it. But hurry. This one won’t last long.

1971 Plymouth Duster 340
When we went to publish the Price Reduced feature last night we found out some of the cars we wanted to feature here were already SOLD. These Dusters are so quick and fast, they always get a lot of looks. And the private party seller from Worcester, Massachusetts says this one is numbers matching with a true H Code 340 4-barrel. Deals of the Day
1966 Ford Galaxie 500
Ford Galaxie 500’s were real the top of the line back in the mid-1960’s. Here is a 289 ci V8 version of the 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 Fastback with a white finish and showing under 100,000 miles. It was built in Los Angeles and considered a 2-Door Fastback in Ford terminology. This one comes with stock wheels and hubcaps, and a Cruise-O-Matic FX transmission. It is being offered for sale at Cody’s Classic Cars in Stanley, Wisconsin this week. They say it is absolutely turn key and read to enjoy. Although it was an original West Coast car, it has been pampered and used as a hobby car for the past 30 years in the Midwest. The red interior was given new carpeting. Thely say it runs well. Click here to view a walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $24,900.
1930 Ford Model A Town Sedan
An Elkpoint Green 1930 Ford Model A Town Sedan was listed this week by the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. Their consignor says it is a good driver and has had recent servicing to the engine, new clutch disc and is the beneficiary of an older restoration which now shows its age. The interior is tired and could use a refresh. If you know how to set the choke and throttle, you can start it right up and it drives. They say it drives as it was intended back in 1930. This one is a nice find for someone who wants to drive a car while they restore it because a lot of what it needs is cosmetic. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is only $13,900.
1979 MGB Roadster
A very popular car here in the U.S. the MGB Roadster was the successor to earlier MG models that captured the hearts of Americans ever since they were discovered in Europe during World War II. This Snapdragon Yellow 1979 MGB Roadster was one of the most popular because it had the updated rear anti-roll bars which greatly improved the handling. It is being offered for sale this week at the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania. In their description of the exterior you might note this one has the integrated rubber bumpers. A luggage rack was added aftermarket. They said the brightwork was good. It does have an updated radeo with AM/FM, USB and Bluetooth. It is powered by a 1.8 liter four cylinder engine with a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is $12,000.
1986 Corvette Pace Car
As Indy 500 Pace Cars often seem out of reach pricewise, here is a pleasant surprise. P.J.’s Auto World out of Clearwater, Florida just listed this 1986 Corvette Pace Car Convertible for sale. The black Vette displaying Pace Car livery will turn heads. Although they say it has turned 100,000 miles, the ar looks great in the photos. Powered by a Tuned Port 350 ci V8, it has an automatic transmission, power steering, 4-wheel disc brakes and air conditioning. The tan bucket seats, center console and tan convertible top are a nice contrast to the newer black finish. 2008 Pontiac Solstice GXP
Just before Pontiac went out of business they had started producing the Solstice to appeal to a younger class of buyer. It usually included more power, upgraded suspension, larger brakes, and some apperance extras. This week a 2008 Pontiac Solstice GXP Convertible was listed for sale by Unique Classic Cars in Mankato, Minnesota. It is such a fresh listing that they haven’t yet published their description of this car. We do know that it has 29,666 actual miles. And it looks sharp in the photos. This will be a great car for summer fun. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is only $16,900.
1971 Ford F-250 Camper
On the farm all its life, this 1971 Ford F-250 Pickup was purchased new and has been in the same family ever since. The original dealer invoice comes with. They say it runs excellent. It looks as though the seat in the cab was replaced at some point, but they think the rest of the truck is original. Options that came with this truck include an HD alternator, auxiliary fuel tank, HD shocks front and rear. It came with the Camper Special package. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. They are asking $14,900.
