NASCAR AERO CARS
The year was 1969, and the “aero-car wars” were just beginning in NASCAR. Aerodynamics was the only way to increase speed on the super speedways of NASCAR (or so they thought at the time.) Every automotive manufacturer was looking for the edge it would need to dominate at the track. Aerodynamics was the new “toy” that Ford and Chrysler were playing with.
Ford started things off by introducing the famously aerodynamic 1969 Ford Torino Talladega, the first purpose built speedway car. It was named for the Talladega Super Speedway in Alabama which was opened that same year. It was the first aerodynamic factory production car to be homologated for NASCAR competition, and it took the NASCAR championship in 1969. That was the year Richard Petty left Plymouth to drive Fords. The Talladega won 29 Grand National races in 1969 and 1970. Ford only built 750 of these cars, enough to qualify for NASCAR homologation. Whenever you see one for less than $100,000 today it is considered a great price by any Ford collector.
So this week a Royal Maroon 1969 Ford Torino Talladega was listed for sale by Streetside Classics in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incredible power of the 428 Cobra Jet V8 is unmistakable in this aero car. With a C6 automatic transmission and Ford 9-inch rear end, the car performs with an appropriate gurgly rumble. This Talladega is equipped with dual exhaust, power front disc brakes, factory transmission cooler and an auxiliary fan. Check the clean undercarriage in the ad photos at the link. Streetside Classics tells us this original muscle car comes with factory build sheets, the original warranty card and photos of the restoration. Their price is so low that you may never see one this cheap again.

Classic Car News This Week

No Tariffs on Classic Cars
In response to our article this month on how the Trump Tariffs would have a negative effect on the collector car market, there was a clarification this week from the White House on the 25 Percent Tariffs announced early in April. Evidently classic cars older than 25 years will be exempt from the “auto tariffs” which were proposed by the administration. That means, if you are bringing a car into the U.S. from a foreign country, and that car is 25 years old or older, there would only be the standard 2.5 percent import duty which has always been in place. In 1989, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiated new rules so that collector vehicles could be imported into the U.S. Those rules say that any vehicle 25 years old or older may enter the U.S. at the standard 2.5 percent import duty. The White House has confirmed that these rules will remain in force.
Chevelle SS Inspection
As the prices on 1966 through 1971 Chevelle Super Sport muscle cars keep escalating, it becomes more and more important not to make a mistake on condition when buying one. Condition class determines value. An Iowa man wanted us to go half-way across the country to the West Coast to inspect a 1970 Chevelle SS which he wanted to buy. He was aware that the air conditioning was not working, but he wanted us to make sure the body panels were solid. The independent inspector found that the air conditioning compressor was not locked up and the clutch turned freely. Although the body work was done nicely, he found bondo throughout the body. He also found some rust in the trunk due to leaks in the weather stripping. The paint had some scratches in it. The transmission was definitely not matching numbers. Overall, the Chevelle performed well and would be a fair Number Three driver. At least now the buyer knew what he was getting into.
Our newsletter readers know that you should always have a pre-purchase inspection done on a collector vehicle before you buy. There are no warranties on old cars, so it is buyer beware when purchasing a collector car. Click here to find out how to order a pre-purchase inspection and appraisal.

1934 Packard Eight Convertible
The Packard chromed “Flying Goddess of Speed” hood ornament is an iconic remembrance of the era in U.S. history when Packard was the standard of excellence in automotive design. Though this 1934 Packard Eight Convertible is now 91 years old, we still marvel at some of the innovations that made this car a status symbol of the future. It had what they called an advanced “1-2-3-4” braking system with four-wheel hydraulic brakes and a master cylinder to supply levels of pressure. This tri-toned Ascot Maroon and Claret Red example with black trim is a stunning restoration to show quality. It is being offered for sale this week at Flemings Ultimate Garage in Rockville, Maryland. It features hand polished Carpathian Elm burlwood dash and door caps. With suicide doors and roll-up center privacy glass divider it is absolutely a vintage treasure.
1959 Chevy 3100 Apache
Custom show vehicles are often only seen at the top national car shows like the Detroit Autorama or Grand National Roadster Show. But here is a 1959 Chevrolet 3100 Apache show truck that ranks right up there with the best of the best. It is being offered for sale to the public this week by RK Motors in Charlotte, North Carolina. The show winning truck has had numerous hand fabricated body modifications by Zoomers Automotive in Denver, and is graced with a full custom leather interior. Although it retains classic styling, this ride has the finest in Jet Age technology with a 327 ci Chevy V8 that was built by Ridge Reamer Inc in Arvada, Colorado. Other exotic performance items include a 700R4 with 2,400 RPM stall converter, polished aluminum driveshaft and Dutchman 9” with polished Mark Williams center section and 4.11 gears. It has a TCI Mustang II front clip with custom control arms and a frame attached to a full Air Ride Technologies ShockWave system. No wonder it was the Goodguys Truck of the Year in 2007. Click here to watch an interesting walk-around video and here it run. Art in motion.
2024 Toyota Supra GR
When Toyota brought back the popular Supra name in 2019 with the GR designation, it was a revival that was enjoyed the world over. Not only did it bring up the value of the original Supra collector cars, but it inspired a new generation of sports and exotic car lovers. Here is a 2024 Toyota Supra GR 45th Anniversary Edition that was born to be collectible in its Mikan Blast Orange paint. They only produced 900 limited edition examples. This one has only 244 original miles. It is being offered for sale this week at The Throttlestop in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. It features the 3.0L Twin-Scroll Turbo inline 6 cylinder engine producing 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. It has a manually adjustable rear spoiler and Akrapovic exhaust. Collectors will appreciate its fusion of heritage and driving experience. But you’ll have to own it to know for sure.

Deals of the Day
2001 Pontiac Firebird
A 2001 Pontiac Firebird Convertible was listed this week in such nice condition that we thought we should list it here. Although just a Firebird it has the Trans Am-Formula look (without the extra cost to insure.) It is being offered for sale this week through Classic Auto Showplace in Michigan. Check out the beautiful black interior. The 3.8 liter gets you 27 mpg and is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. It has the Y87 package with power steering, larger sway bars, quicker steering ratio and limited slip rear axle. It also comes with the F41 Sport Suspension and factory 16” chrome wheels. They say it has been well maintained. Have it inspected to get the full report. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $16,700.
1952 Ford Customline
The 1952 Ford Customline looks good in Hawaiian Bronze finish. The driver quality car is priced so right it will be one of our DEALs of the DAY this week. It was just posted for sale by WeBe Autos, an internet broker from New York. They say it has the original rebuilt flathead engine with the oil filter canister, and a rebuilt 3-speed manual Ford-O-Matic transmission. It has an electronic ignition with new plugs and wires, and an electric fuel pump with rebuilt generator. The front end has been rebuilt, they tell us. Notice the side skirts. Considered to be a mild custom, it has been nosed and decked, and the pinstriping was done by Fast Eddie. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is $15,495.
1965 Mustang Convertible
Here is another interesting deal from Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. They just posted this 1965 Mustang Convertible for sale. The Champagne Beige convertible Pony car is priced at a discount to the average value. Equipped with an automatic transmission, 289 ci V8 engine, 2-barrel carburetor, chrome bumpers, 289 side badging, it also has 14-inch wire wheels with knock-off spinners. This Mustang is a C Code. The Ford sports car comes with an owner’s manual and service receipts for the past 44 years. Have it inspected before you buy, but hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is only $27,500.
1979 Datsun 280ZX
Beverly Hills Car Club also listed a 1979 Datsun 280ZX for sale this week. Our readers know that we have often said these early Datsun sports cars are becoming very popular among Gen-X’ers who are now into car collecting. Datsun Z’s are exactly what we mean when we say “future collectibles.” You can still buy them pretty reasonably now. They should appreciate in value as time goes on. This one is a California car. By 1978 they had the fuel-injected inline six with four-wheel disc brakes. This one has air conditioning, cruise control, bucket seats, center console and comes with the owner’s manual. It has had a lot of recent servicing. Call to find out its condition and records. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. Their asking price is only $17,500.
2001 BMW Z3 Roadster
Here is the sleeper deal in this week’s newsletter. A 2001 BMW Z3 Convertible was listed for sale out of Glendale, Arizona this week. The private party seller says it comes the original interior and automatic transmission. He says it has new front brakes, new cabin filter and has had an oil change just completed. He says the top is electric and in good condition, works. (He notes a little fraying, see description.) Although the driver’s seat has a split, he says the rest of the leather interior looks good. Power steering works. The paint has been damaged by the sun. He has some of the minor problems listed in the ad copy. But the reason it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday is the price. He is asking $4,100. Yeah, that’s not a misprint. Don’t forget to have it inspected, but hurry!
1963 Jeep CJ-5
There is a 1963 Jeep CJ-5 for sale in Flushing, Michigan. It is being offered for sale by Sovereign Auto Group, a Michigan wholesaler that gets in a few collector vehicles every so often. They just sell them off at great prices. This 4-wheel-drive Jeep has had some upgrades and new parts. We are real impressed with the undercarriage. Look how clean it looks in the photos. If you want to go off-roadin’ this would be one to have inspected. It has the 232 ci inline 6 cylinder engine. I think you’ll agree that this is a lotta’ Jeep for the money. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week (if it lasts that long.) Their asking price is $10,000.
1988 Pontiac Fiero Formula
There is a 1988 Pontiac Fiero Formula in today’s new listings. It’s real cheap. There was an engine swap to the 3.4L V6 and it has the original Getrag 5-speed manual transmission. It is being offered for sale by Classic Car Deals in Michigan. They tell us it has lots of aftermarket upgrades and “goodies.” You will note from the photos that it is in rough daily driver condition. But they say it has a clean rust free trunk and rust free cradle. They note that it has been in the Southern U.S. all its life. You certainly should have it inspected before you buy because you need to know if it is mechanically sound. The interior is rough. But the price is right at $7,995.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
