The Sign of the Cat
In 1970 you could get an R Code 428 Cobra Jet engine in many Ford and Mercury model cars. But the most exciting R Code of all was the Cougar Eliminator. There were 2,268 Cougar Eliminators built that year. Only 374 were equipped with the 428 Cobra Jet engine.
This Competition Yellow 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator is even more rare than that. Only 39 Eliminators were built in 1970 with a 428 CJ, 4-speed toploader and painted Competition Yellow. And only 13 of those were optioned with a Black Houndstooth interior. The car is being offered for sale today at RK Motors Charlotte. And because it is so special it has undergone a meticulous restoration by KTL Restorations, an award-winning shop that specializes in Cougars. The project took 4,000 hours of labor and “every detail was painstakingly perfected,” they tell us. “The car’s body was stripped to bare metal, ensuring all panels were smoothed and straightened before receiving a flawless Glasurit Competition Yellow finish,” they noted in their sales description. This Eliminator was also factory-optioned with the desirable Ram Air induction system.
RK Motors says the 428 CJ R Code engine was rebuilt and balanced. It still has the original 4-barrel carburetor and even the original distributor. It has a Ford 9” rear end and positraction. Factory power steering and power brakes with front discs make handling a breeze.
RK Motors points out that this Cat was made famous as the Goodguys Muscle Car of the Year in 2019. Our readers may remember seeing it at the Carlisle All-Ford Nationals and the 2018 SEMA Convention. It has won more than its share of trophies.

Classic Car News This Week
Spring Carlisle Headliner
The way Dodge Power Wagons have become a raging trend in the restomod collector market these days, it was a kick to see this one in the inventory of the upcoming Spring Carlisle Auction, April 24-25, 2025. The auction will be held in connection with the famous Spring Carlisle Car Show and Flea Market in two weeks. The red 1962 Dodge Power Wagon M37 is the product of a ground up restoration. It was originally a Department of the Army vehicle. It comes with a front winch, and they say it runs and drives perfectly. Like most Power Wagons, it came with a 225 ci Inline slant 6 engine and a 4-wheel drive transfer case. The good folks at the Spring Carlisle Auction tell us this will be one of the featured vehicles in the two-day sale. Click here to review more of the auction inventory for the Spring Carlisle Auction.
California Smog Test Controversy
There is a controversy in California right now that involves classic car owners vs. the government. California Senate Bill 712 in the California state legislature aims to exempt classic cars from smog check requirements and testing if they are 35 years old or older. (Currently the cutoff for testing is cars built in 1975 or before.) Senate Bill 712 is known as “Leno’s Law” because Hollywood celebrity Jay Leno, recognized as one of the country’s most famous car collectors, has publicly supported the bill and raised interest in it on behalf of the collector car community. The bill has passed through the Senate Transportation Committee and is now moving through the legislative process. Currently cars in California have to be inspected every two years if they are between 8 and 49 years old. (Vehicles newer than 8 years old are completely exempt from biennial testing.) The bill was proposed by State Senator Shannon Grove. Collectors all over the country are watching this legislation closely because whatever happens in California seems to make its way into the rest of the country. 1969 Impala SS 427
Talk about a “street sleeper” … this 1969 Chevrolet Impala SS 427 is super rare. It is being offered for sale at North Shore Classics in Mundelein, IL. What looks like a Grandpa’s car could fool you if you pulled up beside it at the stop light. Only the 427 logo above the turn signal flasher on the front fender could give it away. Call North Shore to find out what documentation they have on this car. Or have it inspected before you buy. But do it quick, because if this car is a real SS 427 it is as rare as frog hairs. North Shore Classics just dropped the price, too, and you can buy it pretty affordably. They say it only has 69,000 miles. Maybe that’s why it looks so fresh in the photos. Click here to watch a walk-around video and hear it run.
1970 Indy Pace Car
So you’d like to own a real Indy Pace Car muscle car, but you thought you’d never be able to afford one? This one might interest you then. The Classic Auto Mall just listed this 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Indy Pace Car Convertible for sale this week. They say there were 626 pace car dealer replicas made of the 1970 Indy Pace Car. All were non-W-30 cars, but they did come with Ram Air hood, Super Stock II wheels, sport mirrors and the Indy 500 race decals. According to Classic Auto Mall, 358 were actually Oldsmobile Cutlass convertibles (not 442s) and 60 came with the 350 ci L74 V8 under the hood. This is one of those rare 350 cars. The Porcelein White Oldsmobile Cutlass has had a repaint in two stage modern finish and the decal package has been redone. It has the correct 14-inch Oldsmobile Super Stock II wheels. Under the hood you will find the rare “gold block” 350 rated at 310 horsepower with a 4-barrel carburetor. They say the car runs and drives well.
K-Code Restomod
Some of the restomod custom muscle cars being produced today are also muscle car tributes. Here is a case in point. P.J.’s Auto World in Clearwater, Florida just posted this 1966 Mustang Fastback Pro Touring Restomod which doubles as a Shelby GT350. It’s like getting two cars in one. The full effect is stunning. The Wimbeldon White Mustang Fastback was actually a real deal K Code car to begin with. It now sports a 5.0L fuel injected V8 with an aluminum radiator and 5-speed manual transmission. It has dual exhaust and Heidts front suspension with adjustable coil over shocks. Front rack and pinion and power steering combining with front disc brakes with Scott Drake electric high pressure brake master cylinder, provide incredible handling. This is a muscle car for the ages.
Auctions
WorldWide Auctioneers is having one of their annual premier collector car Enthusiast Auctions at the end of this month. This is the auction you don’t want to miss if you are an antique and classic car purist. Just to be able to see some of these collector treasures is a once-in-a-lifetime privilege. The selection is amazing. Trust me! There are some antique and classic cars here that you have never seen before. It is all happening in Auburn, Indiana, on April 25-26, 2025. Here is a taste of what we will be seeing at this year’s WorldWide Auctioneers Enthusiast Auction.
Rare 1915 Lozier Touring
You are looking at a truly rare example of an early antique motorcar produced here in the U.S. This 1915 Lozier Type 82 Seven-Passenger Touring car is the only known survivor. This is the last one to retain its original body, engine, chassis and hardware. It was in the Barney Pollard Collection for 40 years. The WorldWide Auctioneers company tells us it is a CCCA Full Classic with an AACA First Place award to its credit also. In its day, the Lozier was the most expensive motorcar in the U.S., so very few buyers could afford it. In 1915 they produced 200 examples of the Type 82 with a six cylinder engine. They were the standard in elegance for that era. This last known example will be sold at the upcoming WorldWide Auctioneers sale in Auburn, selling on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
1931 Auburn Boattail
Among the most popular classic motorcars to return home to Auburn for the Enthusiast Auction are a handful of Auburns and Cords, which were produced here at the factory in Auburn, Indiana. This 1931 Auburn 8-98 Boattail Speedster is a great example. Streamlined boattail roadsters were available in dramatic and elegant color combinations like this one. With dual Pilot-Ray lights, dual cowl lights, dual exposed side-mounted spare tires topped by mirrors, this was an Art Deco styled dream car. The streamlined and raked V windshield are evidence of its sports car appeal and sophistication. It will be sold here at the Enthusiast Auction on Saturday. It is part of the Passport Collection of fine motorcars.
1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I
Built by Rolls-Royce of America, this 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I York Roadster is considered one of the most coveted ever produced by Rolls-Royce. The few that survive today are archived in some of the most prestigious collections around the world. It was originally built at the Springfield, Massachusetts plant where Rolls-Royce motorcars were produced here in the U.S. And the coachwork was done by an American coachbuilder, Brewster & Company. Now hailing from the Passport Collection, this York Roadster was restored by Enfield Restorations in Enfield, Connecticut. It was restored to a high standard, commanding respect in the collector car hobby. They say it performs as an excellent touring car with its 7.7-litre six-cylinder engine ready for Rolls-Royce Owners Club touring events.
1937 Mercedes 540K
Starting from the lineage of the Mercedes-Benz 500K roadster, its successor was longer and more powerful, and was turned into a grand touring car. The 540K Cabriolet was produced from 1936 to 1939, and the B series featured a rear passenger seat often lending itself to chauffeured travel. Only 419 540K chassis were produced, and only a few still exist today. This 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet B will be sold at the WorldWide Auctioneers Enthusiast Auction, on Saturday, April 26. The car was restored and photo documented by Rolf Bunte. In 2022, it underwent a mechanical servicing by Rolf Wagner, a marque expert. He rebuilt and reconditioned the supercharged straight 8 engine. It is ready to be enjoyed at concours events and tours. This is one of the most sought after classic cars in the world.

1968 Camaro 427 Convertible
The glossy black paint looks good in this video ad. Unique Classic Cars out of Minnesota has this 1968 Camaro 427 Convertible restomod creation. True, the blue nose stripe is not original, but the car is an SS tribute anyway. The blue stripe and blue interior work well together. Why not take liberties? Under the hood see a 427 Corvette engine. Click the video window above to view a walk-around inspection and then take it for a test drive. That’s a lotta’ muscle car right there.

Collector Cars with Low Miles
1997 Plymouth Prowler
Somebody saw this 1997 Plymouth Prowler as a collector car from day one. They must have tucked it away in safe keeping instead of using it for daily transportation. That’s why today it still has only 300 actual miles. Orlando Classic Cars has done it again. They found this extraordinary example of a well preserved car to sell at their Orlando, Florida location. It is one of only 457 Prowlers made that first year of production. This one has “future collectible” written all over it.

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1955 Mercedes-Benz 190SL
When we saw this 1955 Mercedes-Benz 190SL sports roadster in our Project Car Section this week we were mystified. It is being offered for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. Mopar fans, grab the phone right now. A private party seller from Pennsylvania has just dropped the price on his 1969 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner. The seller has just lowered the price from $98,500 to $89,500. Or he will sell for less if you want it as a roller.

Deals of the Day
1976 Camaro LT
Check out this 1976 Camaro LT which was just listed for sale by the Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois. It offers the thrill of the muscle car era at a much lower cost than the earlier Camaros. They say it has a 5.3L LS engine, Holley 4-barrel EFI and intake, as well as front disc brakes and power steering. All that power is hooked up with a TH400 automatic transmission and controlled with a floor shift. The interior has a center console, black bucket seats and tilt wheel. It is shod with Cooper Cobra radial GTs and comes with a rear deck spoiler. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is $19,900. That’s a lotta’ car for the money.
1933 Buick Model 57
If you are a classic car purist, you will like what you see here. A Wyoming classic car guy listed his 1933 Buick Model 57 Sedan for sale. The best part of the car is the interior. Look at the photo. The fuel system had problem when he bought it and he has that fixed now. “I rebuilt the fuel system and adjusted valves, replaced plug wires and a lot of other stuff.” He says he has kept the car as close to original as possible. It is a complete running and driving car. He says the paint needs help, though. It could be a diamond in the rough for someone who wants to repaint the car. Have it inspected before you buy. But hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. His price is $19,000.
1977 Excalibur Phaeton
Brook Stevens said he designed the Excalibur with inspiration from the early Mercedes-Benz SSK. I remember just a few years ago when European collectors were paying over $100,000 for these cars. Yet, here is one that has been listed for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club for way less. The 1977 Excalibur Phaeton Series III is a very desirable model, sporting a V8 engine and an automatic transmission. The famous neo-classic car is equipped with front-wheel disc brakes, VDO instruments, dual exhaust outlets, dual trumpet horns, Hella taillights, Lucas-branded fog lights, chrome trim/grille/bumpers, convertible soft top, Hankook white-line tires, 15-inch chrome wire wheels, and dual side-mounted spare tires. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is $27,500.
Bugatti Recreation
Get a taste of 1920’s style road racing when you drive this Volkswagen-powered Bugatti replica. Here is the 1998 SPCNS Bugatti recreation race car which is built for street use as opposed to racing. It is being offered for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club at their Los Angeles location. They tell us it is a well-built replica of an iconic race car, and is mechanically sound. It is finished in white, with a tan interior, and is equipped with a 4-speed manual transaxle, Volkwagen 1600 cc flat-four engine, single carburetor, single carburetor, wood steering wheel, wood dash, VDO intruments, floor-mounted shifter, louvers, leather hood straps and 15-inch wheels. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. Their asking price is only $16,750.
1982 Camaro Z28 Pace Car
Indianapolis 500 Pace Cars are a hot item in the collector car market. Manufacturers would produce a certain number of Pace Car replicas to distribute to their dealers in honor of being chosen as Pace Car for that year. When the 1982 Camaro Z28 was chosen as the Indy Pace Car for ’82, it marked a new generation of Camaro for Chevrolet. This week Streetside Classics out of the Tampa, Florida area listed this one for sale with only 59,440 miles on it. It is equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission and smoked T-Tops. The Chevrolet 305 ci V8 engine is fed by a Quadrajet carburetor. They say this car has had $4,000 in recent maintenance. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday next week. Their asking price is only $19,995.
1995 Ford F-150 SuperCab
4-Wheel Classics in Michigan is a truck dealer that specializes in 4-wheel-drive vehicles, especially Fords. They just got in this 1995 Ford F-150 SuperCab XLT with 4-wheel-drive. They say it is “really nice” and “very clean.” They have a folder full of maintenance and repair receipts. They say the Dark Tourmaline Metallic and Calypso Green Metallic paint is mostly original with the exception of the roof being repainted because of fading. They say they have found no rust. You can view the photos of the undercarriage. The say everything works, including heat and air conditioning, and the 5.0 liter V8 “runs strong and smooth.” Click here to watch a walk-around video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is $16,900.
1979 Mercedes 450SL
When we were kids we knew that wealthy people owned Mercedes 450SL sports cars. They were well designed and reliable, and you had status if you had one parked in your driveway. Today these cars are worth way more in Europe than they are here in the U.S. This 1975 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Roadster is being offered for sale at a low price by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. The Signal Red Mercedes comes with a soft top and removeable hardtop so you are ready for all types of driving. It is equipped with an automatic transmission, V8 engine, fuel injection, power steering, twin exhaust outlets, VDO instrumentation, Bosch branded fog lights, chrome trim, chrome bumpers with rubber guards and 14-inch steel wheels. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is $10,750.
