E.L.’s Dream Car
It might well be said that E.L. Cord was a man who was born way ahead of his time. His vision of the automotive industry allowed him to produce cars that were so far in advance of the competition that the public was not ready for them yet. Evidence the introduction of the Coffin Nosed Cord which he produced in Auburn, Indiana at the Auburn factory in 1936 and 1937. Called the Cord 810, it was the first mass produced front-wheel-drive car with an independent front suspension. It was also the first production car to offer hidden headlights. And in 1937 Cord offered a supercharged version.
This week a 1936 Cord 810 Phaeton was listed for sale by Carolina Muscle Cars out of Benson, North Carolina. This Coffin Nosed wonder is a product of a “no-expense spared” quality restoration. Finished in Palm Beach Tan exterior finish, it has a dark red leather interior and contrasting black convertible top. The powertrain includes the original 288 ci L-head Lycoming V8 engine producing 125 horsepower, mated to a 4-speed transmission which was electronically shifted via a pre-selector. It was quite innovative for 1936. It has 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. It had no running boards and the door hinges were hidden. For its time it was an engineering marvel.
The famous Gordon Buehrig was the designer. His early renderings of the Coffin Nosed car were meant to be for Duesenberg, but became the signature look for the Cord 810 and later the 812. The “car of the future” was a wonder to look at, but the new car buying public was not ready for it. At the time, E.L. Cord owned Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg. The Cord 810 was his last attempt at producing a car that would capture the automotive markets and elevate him to the level of Ford, Chrysler and General Motors. Sadly, by the end of 1937 they had produced only 2,971 Coffin Nosed Cords, coupes, sedans and convertibles all totaled. Cord sold his ownership in the company and retired.
Today, a Cord 810 Phaeton such as this one is treasured among car collectors. It was one of the most influential motorcars of its era. The ownership history is known, and it has been certified by the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club as a Category 1 Original Car.

Welcome a New Advertiser
A classic car broker located in Indiana is providing a great service to collectors all over the country. The business is called Haggle Me (a humorous word play on the old used car stereotype.) They do the hard work of listing a car for us old timers who have a hard time with the “internet.” They will list your car and provide services to get it sold even if the buyer is half-way around the world. This week they listed a flamed 1955 Chevy Nomad Custom with stunning paint and wheels. Their client says the car shows as if it were new. That is because there are very low miles on the restoration since it was completed. Find out more at the link. You will see many for sale from Haggle Me in the New Listings below.

Hard Rock ’59 Caddy
If you’ve visited the Hard Rock Café in Atlanta from 1992 through 2009 you’ve probably seen this 1959 Cadillac Convertible restomod displayed out front. It is one of the fifteen classic customs created for Hard Rock Café locations across the U.S. These cars were all designed by Rick Smith, a Texas builder, with a flair for classic ‘50s automobiles. The classic Caddy is now being offered for sale at Streetside Classics in Atlanta. They say it has the 390 V8 engine and 3-speed Hydramatic transmission with dual Flowmaster exhaust for sound effects. It still has the power drum brakes and stock suspension with factory power steering. Although it rides lower than the original, it still has the OE hubcaps on 15-inch wheels. You can find this one in the Celebrity Section of our website.
Plymouth Hemi Superbird
This listing will rock the Mopar world. A 1970 Plymouth Superbird was just listed by a private party seller from New Mexico. Although it was originally a U-code 440 car, it was given a ’68 426 Hemi engine which has been stoked to 477 ci. The seller says he has the dyno sheet and all the receipts. He also mentioned that it has a fresh ’69 Hemi 727 HC automatic transmission. The color is FY1 Lemon Twist Yellow with black bucket seats and console. He says it comes with the fender tag and 2 build sheets. It is Superbird # 1696 on the NASCAR list. It was stored for 30 plus years and remains unrestored with 40k original miles. The seller says everything was freshened when it came out of storage. He considers it to be in nice “driver quality” condition.
Mercury Marauder 428
A lesser known but very popular muscle car in its day, here is a 1966 Mercury Monterey Marauder 428 Convertible just posted for sale by Ideal Classic Cars in Venice, Florida. The name Marauder is legendary among Mercury collectors. It was Mercury’s attempt to put muscle car power into a luxury class ride with upscale features. It was the beginning of matching performance and luxury for automotive manufacturers. This ’66 model Monterey was born with a 428 Super Marauder big block engine, a factory salute to the earlier S-55 Mercs with the 427 Super Marauder engines like the ones Parnelli Jones and Bud Moore raced. It has a 4-barrel carburetor, dual exhaust, factory air conditioning, factory cruise control, power steering, power brakes and a power top. For a Mercury collector, this is a lotta’ car for the money.
Auctions
Over 750 vehicles are set to cross the auction next week when the GAA Classic Winter Auction happens in Greensboro, North Carolina, February 20-22, 2025. We will be reporting all the action when the giant collector car auction takes place at the Palace in Greensboro. Classic car dealers from throughout the Southwestern U.S. will be on hand to buy special cars for their inventories. But the event is open to the public and anybody with a bidder’s registration can bid on these cars. Here are a few we will be watching closely.
Chevrolet Cameo Pickup
For classic pickup truck collectors, this is one of the most desirable trucks out there. This 1957 Chevrolet Cameo Carrier has been treated to a frame-off rotisserie restoration. The consignor lists it as a restomod. It comes in rare ’57 colors of Golden Yellow and Bombay Ivory. But it now has a 350 ci V8 engine with heat and power disc brake upgrades. It has a 700R4 automatic transmission. The frame has been powder coated. Most important, the details of the restoration include all glass, rubbers and seals replaced. The suspension has been upgraded to modernize the ride. It will be open to bid on during the GAA Classic Winter Auction in Greensboro on Friday.
1941 Mercury Convertible
This rare classic 1941 Mercury Coupe Convertible will be offered at NO RESERVE in the upcoming GAA Classic Winter Auction in Greensboro. An older restoration, this classic Mercury features a leather interior, and an original looking Flathead 8 engine. The combination blue exterior over the dark red leather is an unusual find. For a pre-war car, this is one you won’t see in the retail collector car market. You will have a chance to bid on this one on Friday, February 21st. Don’t miss out. This one goes to the highest bidder without a Reserve. Look at all the photos at the link.
Boss 351 Mustang
A sharp looking 1971 Mustang Boss 351 will be crossing the auction block at the GAA Classic Winter Auction in Greensboro. It is a good example of the quality of muscle car you can expect to find at a GAA Classic auction. The silver metallic paint with black accents is a stylish look found only on the one-year only Boss 351 Mustang. Ford made the Mustang longer and more able to house a high performance engine under the hood that year. You can read the Marti Report on this one on their ad page. The engine and undercarriage are nicely detailed. The consignor notes that the 4-bolt main block is NOM. Although the mileage is Exampt on the title, the consignor believes it has about 53k miles.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Custom
We were just visiting the Orlando area when we bumped into a weekly car show in Kissimmee’s Old Town that featured the local Jeep club. We found out how big the custom Jeep market has become in Florida. Here is a great example of what we found was happening. This 2023 Jeep Wrangler Custom was just posted for sale by MGM Classic Cars. It has a 3M Satin Black finish with Armor Coating and Firecracker Red clear. The suspension is a 2.5” coil spring with TerrFlex shocks. It has a one-touch power convertible top. But the cool thing about this Jeep is the lighting effects with dual flush LED lights, dual flush mounted cube lights, Westin EF2 50” LED light bar and dual accent LED auxiliary hood lights. It has a lot of tech inside the cab also. This trend in Jeep customization is spreading across the country. Click the video window above to see more.
