Classic Under the Radar
While Cords and Duesenbergs are at the pinnacle of desirability for car collectors here in the U.S., a period rival sometimes slips under the radar which should not be overlooked. When a 1928 Stutz Model BB Rumble Seat Cabriolet was listed in our Classic Car Section this week we realized it was a gem that could be acquired for a deep discount to its peers.
The 1928 Stutz Model BB is a highly sought-after collector car. This one in Mustard Yellow exterior with ivory fenders was just listed for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. They do not comment on the condition, but by looking at the photos you may consider that it is worth looking into. (A complete pre-purchase inspection should be ordered to get a better idea of the condition class.) The price, however, might be a discount to its market value (depending on the condition class, of course.) The rumble seat makes it that much more interesting.
The Stutz BB was considered quite innovative for its era. This one is equipped with a floor-shifted 4-speed manual transmission, a powerful 4.9-liter straight-eight engine that produces around 115 horsepower. It was known for its ability to do long-distance trips and provided a thrilling driving experience. A Stutz Model BB competed in the 1928 Le Mans 24-Hour endurance race, finishing second.
This one has crank windows, a tilt-out front windshield, Denman white-wall tires, steel wheels, and full-sized spare tires that are mounted on both fenders. The Weymann-style fabric bodywork was particularly innovative for its time. You will note that the interior on this motorcar looks like it was redone. Ask about the restoration.
Only 2,403 Series BBs were built in 1928, making surviving examples quite rare and highly prized by collectors. So it is estimated that there are only about 40 to 50 of them left today.
The Stutz brand has a storied history, with the Model BB signifying high-performance and luxury.
Overall, the 1928 Stutz Model BB is a fantastic choice for collectors who appreciate a blend of performance, luxury, and historical significance. What makes it so special today is that these cars can be acquired at a fraction of what a Duesenberg, Cord or Packard might bring.

Classic Car News This Week
Raleigh Classic
The last big collector car auction of the 2024 car show season wrapped up this past weekend in North Carolina. It was interesting to see so many low miles cars cross the auction block at the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction in Youngsville, North Carolina. We hope you get a chance to read all about it on our ClassiCarNews blog (click the link.) The top sale was a 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Lightweight which saw intense bidding from the auction floor while bidders on the phone and on the internet kept up the pressure. We also enjoyed seeing competitive bidding on a dozen or so classic Cadillacs with low miles. Many of them sold at No Reserve. We always say that there is no other sale in the country that has such a high percentage of low miles and top quality cars.
Hudson Inspection
When Cars-On-Line answered the call to inspect a 1947 Hudson Pickup in Florida, a New York buyer got the full scoop on this interesting classic pickup truck. It is a rare one. This is a hot rod truck, which the inspector noted by pointing out the dress-up under the hood, lowered stance and the Camaro subframe mods with power steering. There were also some electrical issues which would need attending to. He noted that the Vintage Air system worked well as you might expect from a classic driven in Florida. He also warned the buyer that the Flowmaster mufflers were a little loud for this use. That is a matter of personal taste. You can read the full report to discover the condition of the paint and finish, and the wood bed. Click here to read the Pre-Purchase Inspection Report on our sample reports page.
This buyer did the right thing having us do the Pre-Purchase Inspection before he bought the truck. Are you anticipating buying a collector car? We can help. Read some of our sample pre-purchase inspections to find out what we do.
