Last Hudson Big Boy

1947 Super Six Pickup

We all know about the history of the Chevy El Camino and the Ford Ranchero as they became the symbol of rural America blending into suburbia. But the need for a pickup truck’s utility combined with the creature comforts of a passenger vehicle were already known way back in the 1940’s by Hudson Motor Car Company. They produced the Super Six Pickup in the post-war era. It was a Hudson Super Six sedan with a long pickup bed in back. Big and powerful, it fullfilled everything you’d need from a pickup and still had the look of a stately sedan. That’s a win, win back in the late 1940’s.

This week a 1947 Hudson Super Six Pickup was listed for sale by Jensen Dealerships out of Sioux City, Iowa. They say it has undergone a frame off restoration and presents in as new condition. It is one of 2,917 produced by Hudson. It was the last year Hudson would produce a pickup truck. This truck has the 212 ci inline 6-cylinder engine with the Twin H Power air cleaner system (just like the Hudson Hornets that won NASCAR championships in the early 1950’s.)

Hudson used an “auto-poise” independent front wheel suspension on the Super Six Pickup as was used in the sedan passenger car. The bed was oversized over seven feet long and over four feet wide. This truck has a 3-speed manual transmission. Notice the dual side-mounted spare tires. And the factory chrome package gives it even more of a passenger car look. This one has dual front fog lamps. It has been converted to 12-volt.

Hudson built a pickup truck called the “Big Boy” up until World War II, but discontinued the brand name after the war. Even so, still today people refer to the Super Six as a “Big Boy” because the name was so popular.

You Tube says the Lamborghini Aventador is the most often searched term on their website. This 2021 Lamborghini Aventador LP 770-4 SVJ Roadster is currently being advertised by Reina International Auto in Brookfield, Wisconsin. The color is a rare Verde Ermes with black Alcantara leather. Factory installed options on this one include the Carbon Skin package, a hardtop in carbon fiber, bronze brake calipers and a MuFu steering wheel. The Lamborghini Aventador features a 6.5L naturally-aspirated V12 that makes an astonishing 759-horsepower, which is managed through a single-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission. It should be no surprise that it is the “dream car” for so many people.

1948 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet

In the 1930’s Edsel Ford wanted to design what was to become known as a “personal luxury car.” Not only was it to be the pinnacle of luxury and elegance, but was also to reflect the European automotive designs of that era which Edsel greatly admired. It was no accident that he would call it a Continental. Raymond Loewy, a legendary automotive designer, took over the design and by the end of World War iI Lincoln was ready to unveil a revised Continental. In 1946, 1947 and 1948 these cars were produced with a big V-12 luxury car engine. This week Reina International Auto in Brookfield, Wisconsin posted an art deco era 1948 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet for sale. Note the spare tire rides in its namesake ”Conntinental kit” over the rear chrome bumper.

1957 Scarab Replica

At one time sports car racing was dominated by European automakers. Lance Reventlow, the Woolworth department store heir, set out to change that. His team built a handful of race cars he called Scarabs. By 1958 the Scarabs were winning championships here in the U.S., especially in SCCA. This authentic looking 1957 Chevrolet Scarab is a recreation of those cars that Reventlow had built. It has a 383 stroker Chevy small block with a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission with electric lockout on reverse. With 9” Ford locker limited slip axle, rack & pinion steering and Corvette style rotors on all four corners, it rides on 16” Halibrand knock-off wheels. It is being offered for sale at Hanksters Hot Rods in Daytona Beach Florida this week. Can you imagine the reaction of fans at your local nostalgia races?

Auctions

We’re getting excited to finish out the final event of the year at the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction next week. Cars-On-Line.com will be heading for the Youngsville, North Carolina for the Raleigh Classic, December 6-7, 2024, at the Capitol Auto Auction facility. Not only is it the last big auction of the year, it is one of the best for true vintage classics and great 1950’s cars. It has the reputation of being one of the best auctions to buy true low miles collector cars as well. Many of the top collector car dealers throughout the Southeastern states will be there. They say there will be over 300 choice vehicles in the sale. The Raleigh Classic takes pride in curating the best cars in the hobby for the two-day event. For example, here are a few we will be watching.

Ford Lightweight Galaxie

Here is a Ford muscle car with provenance and a known history. The 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Lightweight was born to race and is one of only 211 ever produced. They came out at mid-year 1963. This is one that was ordered by a private party seller outside the race teams that Ford was supporting. After all these years this car still has just over 16,000 actual miles on it. That red interior is the original interior this car came with. And, yes, it has the 425hp\480 lb-ft. 427ci V8, T-10 BorgWarner aluminum transmission, 4.11 open rear axle, NHRA-approved aluminum bell housing, Police Interceptor brakes, fiberglass hood, front fenders, decklid, and inner fender liners, aluminum front & rear bumpers and brackets, and the lightweight frame. This car will be coveted by any bidder who recognizes what it is. It will cross the auction block on Saturday as Lot # S429.

1959 Oldsmobile 98

It’s just impossible to find a 1959 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible such as this anywhere these days. But you will have a chance to bid on this rare ragtop on Friday at the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction. It will be Lot # F222 on Friday. This 1959 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday convertible has been fully restored and is a 2019 AACA First Place Junior award winner. It is equipped with the 394ci Rocket V8 engine (which produces 315hp) and the “Jetaway” automatic transmission. Additional equipment and options include: power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats and Wonderbar AM radio. You won’t find another one like it.

Hertz Rent-A-Racer

The retro Shelby GT-H cars are just beginning to find their value in the collector car market. This is a 2006 Shelby GT-H, the special edition Hertz commemorative car to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Shelby and Hertz Rental Car Company’s experiment with renting special edition sports cars. Back in 1965 they nicknamed the idea as the Rent-A-Racer promotion. On the 50th Anniversary of the Rent-A-Racer program at Hertz Ford produced a limited edition Shelby GT-H in the original black and gold Hertz livery. This well-preserved example will cross the auction block at the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction on Saturday. It is one of only 500 GT-H editions that year, and they tell us it still has only 1,519 actual miles. It was born to be a collector car. It will be Lot # S406 on Saturday.

Video Ads

1937 Ford Business Coupe

James, a private party seller from Austin, TX, asked us what he could do to make his ad stand out more. We told him what we tell all our sellers. “Send us a video so we can feature it in your ad.” So that’s what he did. You might call James an “over achiever.” He did some spectacular video photography of his all-steel 1937 Ford Business Coupe with a ZZ4 350 small block engine. It is really nice, too, with Mustang II front and leather interior and trunk. Click the video window above to get a feel for what this custom creation is all about.

Have you seen our CarsOnLine.tv Classic Car Video marketplace? To feature your car on CarsOnLine.tv, just add a video to your Cars-On-Line.com ad. Video ads have become the most important development for internet sellers. Just upload your video to YouTube and we’ll embed your video in your Cars On Line.com ad at no extra charge.

Collector Cars with Low Miles

1957 Chevrolet 210

A Surf Green 1957 Chevrolet 210 2-Door Sedan has been listed for sale by East Coast Classic Cars in Lillington, North Carolina. They say this classic Chevrolet was restored frame-off in 2011. There have been only 250 miles put on the car since the redo. In fact, they say it still has only 37,441 original miles from new. With original color, dual outside mirrors and door handles and trim that look like new, you can see from the photos that this car is amazing. They say it would be a “show winner” if you’d like to show it. It is powered by a 235 ci 6 cylinder engine with a 3-speed manual transmission.

Here are more recent Low Miles additions:

1993 Corvette Coupe, Orlando Classic Cars, only 15,000 miles

1985 Mustang GT, Orlando Classic Cars, 39k miles

You’ll find these and hundreds more in our Low Miles Section online now.

Project Vehicles for Restoration

1957 Mercedes 300SL

If you are a top level restoration shop, you might want to consider tackling a car like this one to establish your name. If you can restore this 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster back to authentic detail, you’d have something to hang your hat on. This car has been in the same ownership since 1962, and is a great challenge to do an authentic restoration on. It still has only 37,224 kilometers on the odometer. They say it has not seen the light of day for 59 years, having been in storage that long. This is the first time it has been offered to the public. It even comes with some documentation.

The following are just some of the cars available in the Project Car Section this week:

Price Reduced

1980 Pontiac Trans Am

A private party seller from North Carolina listed his 1980 Pontiac Trans Am for sale a while back. The car is not original, but many might consider it to be better than original. He had installed a Pontiac remanufactured 1979 400 ci V8 with high performance 6x heads, plus a 700R4 transmission with a B&M Quicksilver shifter. It has Holley Sniper Fuel Injection and only 8,000 miles on the new components. He was asking $30,000 when he first listed the car. But just yesterday he dropped the price to $20,000. Now that’s worth taking a second look at.

Muscle Car Clones

1967 Camaro Pace Car

The 1969 Camaro RS/SS Indy Pace Car is without a doubt one of the hottest cars to acquire in the collector car hobby. But fewer collectors know that the first Camaro Pace Car came out in 1967. This week, Ideal Classic Cars out of Venice, Florida has just listed a fresh 1967 Camaro RS/SS Indy Pace Car Convertible tribute for sale. Experts believe that about 100 Camaro Pace Car editions were produced that year (Chevrolet did not keep great records that year so there are no definitive numbers.) As authentic as this Pace Car is, this might be the closest you’ll get to the real thing.

The following are also recently listed Muscle Car Clones:

1969 Chevrolet Nova, MGM Classic Cars, IL, Yenko Deuce tribute

1970 Chevelle, Laguna Classic Cars, CA, SS tribute

1968 Camaro, Streetside Charlotte, RS tribute

1965 Corvette Convertible, MGM Classic Cars, IL, big block tribute

1966 Chevelle, MGM Classic Cars, IL, SS tribute

1966 Chevelle, Super Sport Classics, FL, show stopper tribute

Deals of the Day

Chevy Nova Convertible

If you think you are priced out of the Chevy Nova market, here is your huckleberry. It is a 1966 Chevy Nova Roadster all custom built and a one-of-a-kind find. It was just listed by MGM Classic Cars in Addison, Illinois. They say it fires right up and is fun to drive. Tchevy 350 small block with mild upgrades and an automatic transmission. Look under the hood and you’ll find new valve covers, air cleaner, alternator. The interior has high back Camaro seats and matching rear seat. It has SS badging, American Racing wheels and a Bluetooth sound system. Click here to see a detailed inspection video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $21,994.

1960 Rambler Wagon

Classic station wagons are always popular among collectors. Everyone likes to revisit their youth and we all spent a lot of time in the back of those big family people movers. Here is a 1960 Rambler American 2-Door Wagon from California. It has a replacement 6 cylinder engine and a 3-speed on the column. It is being offered for sale by a private party seller from Albion, Indiana. He says it runs and drives but needs the carburetor rebuilt or replaced It also has a cracked windshield. Although he says it has very little rust, the interior he rates as only fair. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday however, because his asking price is only $8,000.

1957 Ford Thunderbird

Our newsletter readers know what we always say. “If you find a first generation T-Bird in driver quality for under $30,000 … buy it.” Streetside Classics in Charlotte, North Carolina just posted one such 1957 Ford Thunderbird for sale. It has the 312 ci V8 engine and a 2-speed automatic. What’s more it is red with a white auxiliary porthole hardtop and a white soft top. The two-tone white and black interior is well documented in the photos. The T-Bird features power brakes with discs up front, power steering, and power windows. Click this link to watch a detailed walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is only $28,995.

1977 MGB Convertible

A red 1977 MGB Convertible little classic sports car is priced right so we had to feature it here. It was just listed by WeBe Autos in New York state. It has a 1.8 liter inline 4 cylinder engine and a manual transmission with optional overdrive. The convertible top is said to be new, while it also comes with a removable hard top (that’s pretty rare.) Of course, you will note the wire wheels. The stereo has been updated with CD and Bluetooth. They say it has always been garage kept, and that it runs great. They say it has won some trophies and was noted for its interior condition. See the photos. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. The asking price is $12,495.

2006 Mercedes SL500

A private party seller from Arizona is offering his 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL500 luxury sports car for sale. This is one of those unique sport convertibles with the retractable hardtop. He says the paint is good, interior is excellent and that the car has always been very well cared for. He says he has four brand new AMG wheels and 4 new Michelin Pilots on the car. He notes that it runs “perfect,” and that everything works on the car. With 53,000 miles, the car is priced to sell. That is why it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. He is asking $16,500. And he says it is “worth every penny” of that.

1977 Ford F-250 Highboy

A really clean and solid looking 1977 Ford F-250 Highboy Ranger was listed for sale by 4-Wheel Classics out of Holland, Michigan. They specialize in older 4-wheel-drive vehicles that still have a lot of useful life in them. This one is said to be a Western truck that comes with a flatbed and big 460 ci V8 engine. The truck was “selectively restored” by its first owner. The flatbed has a built-in gooseneck. 4-Wheel Classics says there are no rust issues with this build. They say that it is mechanically excellent. Click here to watch a walk-around video and hear it run. The 4-wheel-drive works as it should, they say. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is only $19,900.

Sold Thru Cars On Line

Here are some of the comments from happy sellers who were nice enough to tell us about their experience advertising on the Cars On Line website.

An Iowa collector listed his 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air with us just this week and never made it into the newsletter. That’s because he sold it right away before this newletter was published. He was so happy he notified us right away. “Great site to advertise your vehicle,” he told us, rating Cars-On-Line.com as one of the top selling venues for classic cars. We want to thank him for his contributions to the collector car hobby all these years. A job well done.

A Wisconsin seller sent us a letter to tell us he had SOLD his 2002 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning using a Cars-On-Line.com Slide Show ad. “Thank you very much for everything that Cars-On-Line.com did for me,” he wrote. He was a smart seller. He not only used the premium Slide Show ad to show off his vehicle, but he also had Cars-On-Line.com do an appraisal on it. It was in such nice shape that we linked the inspection report right into his ad. “The vehicle was owned by an Estate, so I was looking for a solution to effectively and efficiently sell the vehicle. Everything worked and functioned exactly as I was hoping for.”
