Jazz Age Award Winner
A rare mid-year production Chrysler was available for only half a production year in 1931. The CG Imperial Eight by Chrysler is a vintage collectible motorcar for the ages. Rare and desirable, this important collector car gleams in its fully restored condition.
A 1931 Chrysler CG Imperial Roadster was listed for sale this week at The Last Detail, a classic car dealer in North Chicago, Illinois. In their words, it stands as the “epitome of Chrysler’s early prowess, a rare top-line chassis built for 1931 only … and is a CCCA Full Classic recognized by multiple AACA and CCCA award winning restorations. This car was previously in the collection of Thomas F. Derro whose cars were known throughout the Northeastern U.S. Subsequently, while in another well known collection it received its first body off the frame restoration in 2005. That netted the CG its first CCCA National First Prize Award in 2007. Another restoration was commissioned in 2010, including a fresh repaint and new convertible top. After that it went on to win AACA Grand National First Prize, AACA Diamond Jubilee Award and AACA Walter P. Chrysler Award, among others. It was the AACA’s calendar car in 2012.
This is an historic car that has had a wonderful show car history. You will note its two-tone paint with complementary Autumn Leaf upholstery and tan Haartz canvas folding top. It has dual side-mounted spare tires with mirrors, twin Pilot Ray driving lights, a color-matched trunk rack and its AACA badges affixed to the radiator. Back in the day, this was considered an exceptionally smooth riding car. Click here to review a walk-around video and hear it run.
For its time this Chrysler CG was the “trophy car” in Chrysler’s stable. It represented what Walter P.’s team could achieve with the technology of the day. To the world, it proved what Chrysler was all about.

Classic Car News This Week
Buyer Beware
When a 1960 Porsche 356B 1600 showed up for sale on the internet for only $49,000 this week, a buyer from California contacted us to have it inspected. Could this be for real? That price would be about half of what the value of this little Porsche sports car would be worth. But there was a twist in the story. The seller wanted the buyer to pay them the money up front before they would allow us to inspect the car. That sent everybody’s antennas up. So we called the classic car dealer who was selling the Porsche. When they discovered that they were dealing with Cars-On-Line, it seems that the “car had already been sold.” That is the value of a Cars-On-Line pre-purchase inspection. Often you just have to say our name and a sketchy seller will back off and save you a lot of grief. Click here to find out more about how to obtain the services of a Cars-On-Line Inspection and Appraisal.
Jaguar Becomes Electric
A paradox by intention? Jaguar sent mixed messages recently. On the one hand it announced the limited edition manufacture of two retro Jaguar E-Types, the legendary XKE sports cars to be built for a middle Eastern client. Was it a tribute to the past, or the swan song for carbon burning Jaguar automobiles? We say that because they have also announced that they will discontinue all current model lines to retool for going all-electric by 2025. They have commited to producing only electric cars for the 2025 production year. In fact, Jaguar Land Rover says it will build only electric Land Rovers by 2030. A Jaguar press release quotes Jaguar Land Rover CEO Thierry Bollore as saying he wants JLR to lead in “responsible modern luxury.” All Jaguars for 2025 will be built on a new modular design with purely electric technology befitting Jaguar’s reputation for performance and luxury. Jaguar will be the first of the “old line” automotive manufacturers to convert to electric only models. They were also the first to produce an all-electric SUV, the Jaguar I-PACE in 2018. JLR is owned by India’s automotive conglomerate Tata Motors, now the world’s largest auto maker. Jaguars, however, are still produced in Birmingham, England.

2005 Ford GT
You know the collector car market has impact when the top auto manufacturers pay homage to it. That’s what happened when Ford Motor Company decided to produce a limited edition version of their famous Ford GT-40. Only they just called it the Ford GT. They came out with the 2005 Ford GT and it had an incredible response from classic Ford fans. The fact is it is wicked fast. The 5.4L engine is Eaton supercharged. And it is a street legal vehicle, not just for racing. In fact, most are pampered with low miles. This one is being offered for sale at Ellingson Motor Cars out of Rogers, Minnesota. It comes with every option. It has the Brembo brakes with 4-piston calipers. It includes air conditioning, power windows and even power vent windows.
1954 Kaiser Darrin
Newsletter readers may have noticed that Gullwing Motor Cars out of Astoria, New York has posted a few 1954 Kaiser Darrin project cars for restoration recently. Well, this week they just listed a 1954 Kaiser Darrin Roadster for sale. Only this one is in exceptional condition, an older restoration, ready for your collection. The Kaiser Darrins are famous for their innovative “pocket door” design where the two doors slide into the front fenders instead of opening out. This one is especially rare, too, because it is in Pine Green finish. We’ve only seen one other Pine Green Kaiser Darrin ever. It is one of only 435 Kaiser Darrin roadsters ever produced. They were made for only one year. They were the first ever factory produced fiberglass bodied car made in the U.S.
1964 Pontiac GTO
An award winning 1964 Pontiac GTO Hardtop was listed this week. The recipient of the Concours Gold Award at the GTOAA Nationals in 2022, it is a 389 ci V8 with Tripower. It is documented as authentic by its Pontiac Historical Society paperwork. This vehicle is being offered for sale by MS Classic Cars in Massachusetts. They say it was restored by noted GTO specialist Kevin Landis of Ohio Muscle Car. The meticulous restoration was completed in 2022 with only 11 test miles since. (I guess it’s a trailer queen.) Many original and NOS parts were used in the restoration work. Click here to review a detailed video inspection and see how straight the body is. That is Marimba Red paint, exceptional quality.
Auctions
The GAA Classic Fall Auction is coming up in just two weeks. Held at the Palace in Greensboro, November 7-9, 2024, the GAA Classic auctions are among the best in the country. They have been adding some of their top auction vehicles to our COL listings to promote the three-day event. What we like about them is that you can still buy a really nice collector car here at a reasonable price. Be sure to check out their inventory at the link below. Here are some of the recent additions.
1941 Packard Woody Wagon
You are looking at one of the real treasures of the collector car hobby. This 1941 Packard 120 Woody Estate Wagon is one of the most coveted trophies for woody collectors. We’ve only seen one other one in our lifetime. (That one was in California at the Wavecrest Woodie Show.) It is indeed one of only 58 such Packard wood bodied wagons ever produced. This one was previously in the Carail Musuem. It was an AACA National First Prize Winner in 1989. The body was done by Hercules, the aftermarket manufacturer that made the wood bodied wagons for Packard. If you were at the 100 Years of Packard Centennial show in Ohio you would have seen it there. It will cross the auction block at the GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro on Saturday, November 9.
1941 Dodge Power Wagon
The collector car hobby is in love with the old World War II era Dodge Power Wagons, especially the ones that have been resto-modded. So, here is a custom fabricated 1941 Dodge Power Wagon restored as an extended cab. Wow! This is spectacular! In Mopar Sublime Green paint, it is mounted on a GM suburban frame with modern suspension. It has tilt wheel, power windows and delay wipers, along with an updated 6.0L LS V8 engine and 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission. They say there are only 2,100 miles on this Power Wagon since it was restored. It comes with a 10k Traveller front mounted winch with controller. Those are custom Rhino rims with 35×12.50 18 inch BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires. You will be able to bid on this incredible build on Saturday, November 9 during the GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro.
1955 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible
Classic 1950’s Cadillacs bring top dollar here at the GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro, North Carolina. This white 1955 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible will be no exception. Take a close look at the two-tone red/white leather interior on this beauty. Can it be told from new? This car has air conditioning, power operated convertible top in black cloth, updated power brakes, power steering, power seat and the dual quad 331 ci V8 engine with updated Edelbrock dual 4-barrel carburetors. It also has a hard boot cover with custom storage shelves. Look closely and you’ll see the Eldorado chrome plated wheels wrapped in wide whitewall tires. If you register to bid you will have a chance to own this beautiful classic Cadillac when it crosses the auction block on Saturday, November 9.

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1971 Jensen Interceptor
For those who know how a 1971 Jensen Interceptor performs, you will want to read this. Beverly Hills Car Club discovered this one “lost in storage” for who knows how long. Lost and forgotten, it has not been started up and therefore does not run at this time. However when you see the photos you may conclude that it would not take much to restore this one to its former self. You remember that the Jensen Interceptors came with American V8 engines. This one has a Holley 4-barrel, power steering, dual exhaust, four-wheel disc brakes, Jaeger instruments and 15-inch wheels. That is a lotta’ potential sitting there.

Muscle Car Clones
Chevelle Z-16 396 Tribute
A beautifully replicated 1965 Chevelle SS 396 Z16 tribute has been listed out of Addison, Illinois. He says he started off with an original 138 VIN car. They only made 201 original Z-16 cars, so the originals are rarer than frog hairs. This one has a 4-speed Muncie M-22. Can you imagine?

A Dark Green Ivy metallic 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible was just listed for sale. They say it is a survivor car with a 289 V8 and a Cruise-O-Matic transmission. Equipped with a 4-barrel and power steering, this one will be a fun car to drive. It is being offered for sale at Unique Classic Cars in Mankato, Minnesota. They say the paint shows its age a little bit, although it still has a decent overall appearance. See photos of the Light Ivy Gold vinyl (68 trim code) bucket seat interior with automatic on the column. Click here to review a walk-around video inspection and here it run. Look how straight it looks in the photos. You don’t see Fords in this kind of condition very often. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $19,900.
1960 Jaguar MK IX Saloon
Wouldn’t it be cool to resto mod an early vintage Jaguar? In order to pull it off you would need to find one in excellent overall condition where you can just swap out the drive train, update the suspension and keep it looking very original. Well, here is your huckleberry. Beverly Hills Car Club has just posted a 1960 Jaguar Mark IV Saloon for sale. It comes in its factory colors, black with a red interior. It is equipped with an automatic transmission, 3.8 liter inline-Six engine, power steering dual carburetors, front fog lights, Smiths instrumentation, interior wood trim, four-spoke steering wheel and chrome trim. This one has a sunroof, sun visors, door pockets and a JVC aftermarket radio. They say it is mechanically sound so you can drive it the way it is. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their price is $19,950.
1966 Oldsmobile F85
A 1966 Oldsmobile F85 Deluxe Holiday hardtop was just listed for sale by a private party seller in Minnesota. The car looks pretty clean in the photos. It would be a good idea to have it inspected since the seller only has a few photos in the ad. Among its features are some updates done to the car. For instance, he says it has a 442 sway bar and an upgraded TH350 automatic transmission. It does have the 330 ci V8 with low compression getting nice gas mileage. While it looks like its Cutlass cousin, the F85 Deluxe was a lower level in the F85 series for Oldsmobile. This one will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is only $9,500. Hurry!
1963 Ford Fairlane
If you are looking for a starter muscle car at a low price this may be your answer. A 1963 Ford Fairlane Sport Coupe was listed for sale this week out of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The private party seller says it was from California and is a solid car. With an older repaint, it has the right look and stance for a slightly custom muscle car. He says the 351 Windsor motor has an oil pressure problem that he hasn’t worked out. So this one might be for a backyear mechanic who wants a challenge. It does have Hooker headers, Edelbrock aluminum intake and Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor. He says it has a very desirable top loader 4-speed, along with a Ford 9-inch rear end with positraction. I think you’ll agree that it is a lotta’ car for the money. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. The asking price is $10,000.
2007 Pontiac Solstice
Another great listing from Unique Classic Cars in Minnesota is this 2007 Pontiac Solstice. Not only does it have the desirable red paint, but it has just 20,837 actual miles, according to the ad copy. The 2.4L engine may be slightly underpowered for such an aggressive looking sports car, but it still attracts all the attention. Nicely equipped with power steering, steering wheel controls, cruise, stereo, power brakes, power windows, power mirrors, power locks and air conditioning. This one is ready to go. Be sure to watch the walk-around video at this link. You will get a detailed inspection in the video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday next week (if it lasts that long.) Their asking price is only $12,900.
2005 Chrysler Crossfire Convt
When Daimler offered the Chrysler Crossfire they may have scored one of the greatest low priced sports cars of all time. This 2005 Chrysler Crossfire Convertible is a great example. With Mercedes precision engineering, this Crossfire was ahead of its time and was a lotta’ car for the money. P.J.’s Auto World in Clearwater, Florida has this Grpahite metallic Limited Edition with only 74k miles. It has a 3.2L V6 engine, 215 horsepower, and a 5-speed automatic transmission. They note exceptional handling and performance from this very desirable sports car. It has a black canvas top, cold air conditioning, power remote mirrors and power windows. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. Their asking price is only $10,900.
1975 Porsche 914
Porsche has several times in their history produced a low priced sports car for the new car buying public. One of their most successful products was the Porsche 914, produced from 1969 until 1976. Here is one of the later model editions, a 1975 Porsche 914 with a 1.8 liter engine and 5-speed manual transmission. This is only a 2-owner car with 53,565 miles on it. It is being offered for sale this week by Coyote Classics in Greene, Iowa. They say it comes with a removable hardtop and original bucket seat interior. Click here to review their video inspection and test drive. They say it runs and drives well. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is $16,995.
