Legendary F Code

Supercharged ’57 Thunderbird

Ford and Chevrolet were spoiling for a fight in 1957. The year before, Ford won 14 Grand National races in NASCAR. So Chevrolet came out with Rochester Fuel Injection in 1957. Ford, not wanting to give up its dominance in NASCAR, produced their Phase One Supercharger program. To meet NASCAR homologation requirements for their 312 ci V8 engine, Ford’s Fairlanes were equipped with McCullough VR57 Phase One Superchargers and heavy duty Borg Warner 3-speed racing transmissions. To fullfill the homologation rules of NASCAR, the Superchargers were earmarked for a special edition of the Thunderbird to be sold to the new car buying public. With the way Ford kept their Supercharger program a big secret, the new car buying pubic was pretty much unaware that these engines existed. Thus, very low numbers were ever built.

That February at Daytona the Ford Thunderbird set a new speed record for American sports cars. The Phase One Supercharged Ford recorded a top speed of 138.775 mph as the McCullough supercharger brought the horsepower rating on the 312 Ford V8 to 300.

A total of 196 F Code Thunderbirds were produced which were also supercharged and sold to the public that year. Next month, a rare F Code 1957 Ford Thunderbird Convertible will be sold at the GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro, North Carlina. You can bet some of the top Thunderbird collectors will be there to get a chance at this rare find. We suspect it will draw collectors out from all over the world.

The Colonial White 1957 Ford Thunderbird F Code Convertible was held in a private collection for 30 years. This will be the first time it has surfaced for sale. It comes with its Paxton-McCulloch Supercharger with dual drive belts. It had won the Classic Thunderbird Club International award. The judging sheets will come with the sale. It has a black soft top plus a matching removable hardtop, and Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels.

These F Code convertibles rarely come up for sale. This is a wonderful opportunity to add a very desirable classic Thunderbird to make yours a top collection.

Classic Car News This Week

Fall Carlisle Auction

We hope you were able to attend last weekend’s Carlisle Collector Car Auction during the Fall Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet in Pennsylvania. It was the 50th Anniversary celebration for Carlisle Events. The auction was one of their most successful sales. Not only did they sell 50 percent of the consignments, but they grossed over $3.3 million in sales. Over 400 cars and trucks crossed the auction block, from a 1927 Cadillac to a pair of 2018 specialty Mustangs. It was a very successful 50th Anniversary year for Carlisle Events. So, in addition to the big auctions in Carlisle for 2025, Carlisle Events Director of Auction Operations, Tony Cline, announced that they will be making a return to Lakeland, Florida this year for an extra auction event, February 7-8 at the Sun N Fun Expo.

Studebaker Appraisal

When a Wisconsin collector wanted to know how much his 1950 Studebaker Champion Convertible was worth, he filled out our online form to have a pre-purchase inspection done on the vehicle. His purpose was to get it ready to sell, and he wanted to know what the value would be. Because it had some filler in the body and the finish had some chips and scratches, this car appraised out at a Class Three rating (the category where most vehicles fall into.) The filler was found in the usual places on these Studebakers. Overall the body was in good shape with no rust, and the driver quality repaint was a good match for the original Tulip Cream factory color. In its current condition it is a driver quality car, but a very rare one. It would be worth a full restoration. You can read the report to find out what we placed the value at.

It is a great idea to have your car appraised before you put it up for sale. We can help. Read some of our sample pre-purchase inspections at the Inspections Page today.

Ferrari 330 GT

In the collector car stratosphere the most valuable cars are the 1960’s and early ‘70s Ferraris. This week Beverly Hills Car Club listed a 1967 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series II sports car in Argento Silver. Although the price is in six figures, it is actually a discount to how valuable these cars can be. This is not a fresh restoration so it will not bring the kind of money we often see from Pebble Beach concours quality marques. But it is very clean and they tell us it is mechanically sound. That makes it a little safer investment. All the wood grain on the interior looks clean and the Nero Franzi interior looks used but not worn out. Equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox, it sports a numbers-matching V-12 engine, triple Weber carburetors, four-wheel disc brakes, Veglia instrumentation, quad exhaust tips, dual head-lights, chrome trim/bumpers, Carello headlights with chrome rings, Altissimo front fog lights, Michelin tires, and 15-inch alloy wheels with curved eared knock-offs. They say it has only 79,618 kilometers on the odometer.

Auctions

Coming up next on the collector car event schedule is the GAA Fall Classic Auction to be held at the Palace in Greensboro, North Carolina, November 7-9, 2024. We noticed that there are some very desirable rides being offered every day of the auction. The GAA Auctions are some of the best in the country. What we like about them is that you can still buy a really nice collector car here at a reasonable price. Be sure to check out their inventory at the link below. Here are a few feature cars to whet your appetite.

1969 Pontiac Trans Am

The 1969 Pontiac Trans Am is a muscle car collector’s dream. A perfect storm made the first-year Trans Am edition of the Pontiac Firebird one of the rarest muscle cars in existence. The Trans Am was introduced at mid-year in 1969, and a plant strike limited its production. Pontiac failed to promote it to the new car buying public. So only 697 units were ever produced. The real deal Cameo white ’69 Trans Am will be sold to the highest bidder at the GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro, NC next month. Originally sold as a new car in Raleigh, NC, it has more recently undergone an extensive restoration. With a Ram Air III 400 engine, it transfers power via a 4-speed transmission and has stack gauges and Rally II wheels. It will be Lot # 110 on Saturday, November 9, 2024.

’57 Chevy Bel Air Fuelie

A Matador Red 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Fuelie Convertible will be offered on Saturday at the GAA Classic Auction next month. This one is especially rare because it is the solid lifter version of the Rochester fuel injected V8’s known as the 283/283 hp version. It was the first engine to have as much horsepower as cubic inch capacity. It was sent to a marquis specialist for an extensive rotisserie restoration completed in 2008. It has had “white glove” handling ever since. The white power top is nice and they say it fits like a glove. The tri-tone interior is shown in the ad photos at the link and they describe it as “breathtaking.” The correct Rochester Ramjet mechanical fuel injection system was professionally rebuilt, and the solid lifter engine is said to sound great with dual exhaust. This classic Chevy Convertible comes from a respected collection.

2021 Ford GT

There will be some mind blowing sales at the GAA
Classic Auction in Greensboro, November 7-9, 2024, but this 2021 Ford GT will most likely garner the highest price of all. Not only is it a rare and limited edition Ford GT, but they say it has only 16 actual miles on it since new. The exotic sports car has the 7-speed dual clutch transmission, electronic active damping, speed activated splitter, keel deployable rear wing and airbrake and forged aluminum wheels. The F1 inspired steering wheel is wrapped in Alcantara Ebony leather, and it sports anodized black aluminum shift paddles. It has a front lift system which is push button activated and it has a carbon fiber
construction for light weight with integrated tubular steel roll cage. And its fast. Real fast.

1969 Camaro Z/28 RS

Wait till you see this Daytona Yellow 1969 Camaro Z/28 RS, one of the most desirable Camaros ever produced. Dave from Southern Motors knows this car very well and has sold it and bought it back again. He says the original restoration was done in about 2000. It has a Deluxe Hounds tooth interior, and was maintained very well. So straight. Click the video window above for a complete walk-around tour.

Collector Cars with Low Miles

Corvette w/low miles

The private party seller says his 1997 Corvette Coupe “runs and drives like new.” And that is believable because it still has only 23,004 miles on it. He is the second owner and says it has always been garaged. Needless to say, this late model sports car is in excellent condition. It comes with Borla catback exhaust so you know it sounds great. Take a look at that interior in the ad photo. This is like getting a new car for cheap.

Here are more recent Low Miles additions:

1975 Lincoln Continental, North Shore Classics, IL, 37k orig miles

1979 Oldsmobile 98, Midwest Car Exchange,IL, 46,715 miles

1979 Lincoln Town Car, North Shore Classics, IL, 45k orig miles

1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, North Shore Classics, IL, 38k miles

You’ll find these and hundreds more in our Low Miles Section online now.

Project Vehicles for Restoration

1954 Kaiser Darrin

Gullwing Motor Cars in New York just acquired a large European car collection. One of the marques in the collection is a 1954 Kaiser Darrin Roadster which looks so nice in the photos that it almost looks like it would not need a restoration. Like so many cars that have been in storage too long it needs a knowledgeable technician to get it running safely again. This is the model that has the “pocket doors” that disappear into the front fender. Only 435 Kaiser Darrin Roadsters were produced. It is a rare find.

The following are just some of the cars available in the Project Car Section this week:

1969 Dodge Dart GTS

Here is a real important car for collectors to have a chance to own. It is a 1969 Dodge Dart GTS Pilot Car for Dodge. It is said to be the first production Dart GTS 440 to be sold at Saddleback Dodge in California with the 440 engine. It was seen in a June edition of Drag Racing magazine when the publication did a road test and magazine article. It still has only 37k miles on it. The private party seller from Michigan was asking $149,000 for it when he first listed the car. But just this week he lowered the price to $139,000.

Muscle Car Clones

1972 Hemi Cuda

You might consider it a resto mod, but whatever you call it this 1972 Plymouth Cuda has the Hemi billboard and there is a monster 426 Hemi engine with dual quads under the hood. NOM of course, but very nicely done. Look at that big Hemi Shaker. It is being offered for sale at Coyote Classics in Iowa. They say it comes with “ice cold Vintage air” and 4-wheel disc brakes. The paint is Curious Yellow.

The following are more recently listed Muscle Car Clones:

1963 Plymouth Fury from Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Max Wedge Tribute

1968 Chevelle, North Shore Classics, IL, SS tribute

1968 Plymouth Satellite, American Classics, FL, GTX clone

1969 Camaro, Streetside Ft Worth, Z/28 RS tribute

Deals of the Day

1969 Pontiac Grand Prix

Wow! This Warwick Blue 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix Model J comes with a 428 ci V8 under the hood. They say the engine is NOM, but that’s still a great combination. The TH400 automatic transmission has a floor shifter, center console, and the car is well appointed with power steering, power front disc brakes, dual exhaust. It is being offered for sale at Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois. They tell us it has new carpeting, new headliner (needs adjustment), newer upper and lower ball joints and a rebuilt braking system. They say it also comes with PHS documentation. Click here to watch a walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $19,900.

1938 Packard Business Cpe

Here is something very interesting and at a great price. A 1938 Packard Business Coupe has been listed for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles, California. Finished in Grey paint with a cream interior, it is equipped with a straight six engine, 3-speed manual transmission and 3-spoke steering wheel. Note the cormorant hood ornament and big pontoon fenders. Yes, it is a classic. It comes with Firestone whitewall tires, 16-inch steel wheels with Packard hub caps. Inside you’ll find dual rear view mirrors, sun visors and quarter windows. See dozens of detailed photos at the link. Here is a way to own a Packard on the cheap. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is only $23,500.

1949 Studebaker Starlight

In only its second year the 1948 Studebaker Starlight Coupe was making its way into the hearts of American sports sedan buyers. This one is being offered for sale this week at Cody’s Classic Cars in Stanley, Wisconsin. They say it was restored in the past five years. It is one of only 5,499 Champion Deluxe Starlight Coupes ever produced. The 170 ci inline 6 cylinder engine has been rebuilt and has only about 1,000 miles on it. It has a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive. It was partially upgraded to 12-volt for lights and windshield wipers. They say the paint and chrome is beautiful. Click here to review a walk-around video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is $16,900.

1960 Triumph TR3

I bet you can’t beat this price. A classic 1954 Dodge Coronet was listed for sale through Country Classic Cars out of Staunton, Illinois. Their facility is on the old Route 66. The old Dodge 4-door sedan is originally from North Carolina. It has a tutone paint job with red and grey interior. They say the interior has been redone. Under the hood is a surprice. The Hemi V8 it mated to a Powerflite automatic transmission. Although it runs and drives well right now, they point out that it would benefit from a full restoration. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. Their asking price is only $7,900.

1965 Barracuda

The Plymouth Barracuda developed out of the A-Body Valiant model line. While the Valiant was a compact car, the Barracuda was a two-door hardtop (no B-pillar) with a sporty flair. This 1965 Plymouth Barracuda is a good example of the second year of production on this model. It is being offered for sale at Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. Equipped with an automatic tranmsission, this early sports car had a V8 engine and 2-barrel carburetor. The 12-inch steel wheels have Plymouth hubcaps. It comes with air conditioning, low-rise bucket seats, sunvirosers and vent windows. In fact, they say it still has its owner’s manual and service receipt copies through 2022. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday next week. The price is $18,750.

1980 Datsun 280ZX

There is a whole lot of collector interst in the early Datsun Z cars. That is because they were the closest thing to an exotic sports car as you could afford back in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Here is a 1980 Datsun 280ZX for sale at Beverly Hills Car Club. The Gold metallic paint is rich looking and contrasts nicely with the black T-Top glass roof panels. This is a 5-speed car for that sports car driving experience. Under the hood is a six cylinder fuel-injected engine, just the right punch for the average sports car enthusiast. Nicely appointed, it has four-wheel disc brakes, rear spoiler, and single exhaust. Inside, you’ll find modern conveniences such as power windows and mirrors. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week The asking price is $12,750.

1954 Buick Special

Here is a 1954 Buick Special for sale. They say it runs and drives very well. It is available to view at Country Classic Cars in Illinois. They just got this one in. Finished in two-tone green and white with a green and white interior, it has a V8 engine and automatic transmission. They offer the opportunity to have it inspected before you buy. Click here to watch a walk-around video. They say the interior is in “excellent overall condition.” You can view detailed photos at the link. They say you really must see it in person to appreciate the value. Country Classic Cars is located along the old Route 66 in southern Illinois. This Buick will be the DEAL of the DAY latter next week.
