Mercury Under The Radar

1968 Cougar XR-7 GT-E For Sale

With less money and almost no promotion, Mercury’s racing program was gaining traction on the much better funded Ford Mustangs. In mid-1967 Mercury built about 10 Cougar 427’s with the purpose of competing in NASCAR. This prototype went into production to homologate the Cougars for NASCAR in ’68. The street versions used 7.0 liter 427E big blocks (production before May ’68) or 428 Cobra Jet (after May ’68). They designated these cars as Cougar XR-7 GT-E’s.

This week a rare 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 GT-E was listed for sale by West Port Auto Center in Fenton, Missouri. They say this “W” Cat is the recipient of a rotisserie restoration to the highest level. Only 256 GT-E’s were ever built by Mercury. That makes them even more rare than the Mustang Boss 429’s. This one left the factory in Cardinal Red with silver trim. Note the blacked out grille and taillamp area. With hidden headlights and simulated hood scoop, and quad exhaust pipes, it looks the part of a ‘60s muscle car. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Select-Shift Merc-O-Matic C6 3-speed automatic transmission. This is one of the rare early cars with the 7.0 liter V8, often referred to as a 427 side oiler. The factory rated it at 390 horsepower.

The GT-E package included, the big block V8, and special engine dress-up kit. The engine compartment had chrome rocker covers, oil filler cap, dip stick, radiator cap and air cleaner housing. It also featured the Super Competition Handling package; with stiffer springs plus a larger-diameter sway bar, heavy-duty shock absorbers, and a 3.50:1 Traction-Lok axle ratio.

This is one of those muscle cars that could go under the radar unless you are a Mercury enthusiast. Click this link to watch a walk-around video and hear it run. Then check out all the photos of the documentation and magazine articles about this car. And the price is way cheaper than a Boss 429. Yes, it is.

Classic Car News This Week

’58 Impala Convertible at the GAA

GAA Classic Auctions is gearing up for their Fall Collector Car auction in Greensboro, North Carolina. This week they teased our interest with this photo of an Onyx Black 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible which they will auction off at their upcoming event, November 7-9, 2024. Although this car looks totally original in ’58 chrome trim and fender skirts, the driveline has been updated with an LS1 small block Chevy engine and 4L60E automatic transmission. With dual exhaust and Flowmaster mufflers it sounds a little better than a factory Impala, too. You will find more interesting auction inventory from the GAA when you read the New Listings below.

West Coast Customs

A Texas collector is offering his 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Seville Custom for sale. It was built by West Coast Customs to blend the classic Seville body with their techno look body modifications. The purpose of this build was to show and go in style. They say it is an iconic merging of mid-century design with modern enhancements. The driving experience is unbelievable. The custom look and neon enhanced undercarriage are for show; but, the rebuilt 365 ci V8 combined with the Level Ride AccuAir air ride suspension give you a smooth powerful ride. You will enjoy looking at it as much as driving it. And the sound system will bring it all into focus. Look at dozens of photos in the Slide Show ad.

Holiday Custom Cruiser

A custom car collector from Maryland listed a magazine feature car this past week. Our readers may remember when this 1951 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday was featured in Rod & Custom magazine about 20 years ago. The car has maintained a lot of its original custom design, and has undergone a recent reconditioning to preserve its historic value. This is the perfect example of an old school build. Upgrades include Power rack and pinion steering (Fat Man Fabrications), body mounts/bushings, steering column, radiator, custom exhaust, Wilwood disc brakes all around, 468 ci motor out of a 1973 Cutlass, TH400 automatic transmission. There is so much history here. Call the seller to get the full story.

Auctions

One of the oldest and most respected car shows in the country is the Fall Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet in historic old Carlisle, Pennsylvania. During this great show the Carlisle Events people put on the Fall Carlisle Auction at the Carlisle Expo Center across the street from the Fairgrounds. This premier event always draws interesting classic cars, muscle cars and collector trucks from all over the Eastern seaboard. We would like to remind our readers that Carlisle is still offering its FREE UNLESS SOLD GUARANTEE  for sellers who want to consign their vehicle for next month’s auction. Click here to read more.

New cars are showing up in their auction inventory each day. Here are just a few that have come in this week.

1965 Corvette Big Block

There is always a good selection of classic Corvettes represented at the Fall Carlisle Auction. This 1965 Corvette 396 Convertible is a great example. Notice the Nassau Blue paint with a stunning blue interior. That is a rare combination. It also has the white convertible top. This 396 ci Turbo-Jet Corvette is rated at 425 horsepower and has a 4-speed on the console. Note the sidepipes. The ad description does not say whether they were factory. You can contact Carlisle to find out. In fact, you can have this car inspected prior to the Fall Carlisle Auction, Oct 3-4. Look for more classic Corvettes offered in the auction inventory at the link below.

1957 Ford Thunderbird

A 1957 Ford Thunderbird is in the Fall Carlisle Auction inventory. It is shown here in its iconic Thunderbird Bronze exterior color. They say it has a 312 ci V8 engine and a rare 3-speed manual transmission. You can see from the photos that it comes with a white porthole hardtop. The fender skirts also come with the car, as well as the factory wheel covers. The consignor said it runs and drives well. From the photos you can see that it is not a show car, but is in driver quality condition. You might get this one at a discount. You should hurry to register to bid. It will be Lot # 187. And there will be more first-generation T-Birds in the auction. See more at the link below.

2010 Dodge Challenger R/T

If you are looking for a special price on a late model Dodge Challenger, you might want to check out this year’s Fall Carlisle Auction, Oct 3-4 during the upcoming Fall Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. This Plum Crazy Purple 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T is a great example. Since the R/T comes with the smaller 5.7L Hemi motor it might go at a discounted price here at the Fall Carlisle Auction. They only made 1,240 R/T’s in this color. You will note that it has a sunroof and leather interior. You can see from the photos that it is clean and probably babied. Contact Carlisle to have it inspected before you buy. It will be Lot # 191.1.

Click here to register to bid during the upcoming Fall Carlisle Auction. They also have some great deals if you are looking to consign to sell.

1960 Buick “Le Camino”

Wow! Somebody had fun making this 1960 Buick LeSabre into an El Camino by grafting a bed on a sedan body. Wait till you see this video. (Click the video window above to view.) It has a Buick 364 ci V8 with an automatic transmission and Air Ride technology suspension. They say the conversion was “done right.” It has power brakes with dual master cylinder and power steering. This is one video you have to see to believe.

Project Vehicles for Restoration

1937 Cord 812 Phaeton

Gullwing Motor Cars in New York posted a ton of great cars for restoration this week. Here is one that won’t need much to get it back on the road. This is a 1937 Cord 812 Phaeton, a favorite of collectors worldwide. Although it presents beautifully in photos, they say it needs to be gone through to be road worthy again. It was in long term storage. The Coffin Nose Cord has a 289 CID L-Head V-8 engine with Stromberg downdraft carburetor and 4-speed Bendix electric vacuum servo preselector gearbox.Suspension, steering and drivability should all be gone over. We would call this an “easy restoration.”

The following are just some of the cars available in the Project Car Section this week:

1986 Aston Martin Lagonda, Gullwing Motor Cars, NY

1972 Corvette LT-1

A Canadian seller from Manitoba had placed his highly sought after 1972 Corvette LT-1 muscle car for sale earlier this year. It is a recent NCRS Top Flight award winner that comes with its NCRS data sheet and lots of documentation. The Riverside Gold Corvette is said to be all numbers matching and has only 37,000 original miles, according to the ad copy. But for whatever reason, buyers are not reaching out to this seller in Manitoba. Your gain. He was asking $63,000 for this highly collectible classic Corvette. But he just dropped the price to $55,000. Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about.

Deals of the Day

1955 Chevrolet 210

We couldn’t believe it when we saw this 1955 Chevrolet 210 listed for sale at such a low price point. It is being offered for sale by Coyote Classics in Greene, Iowa. It looks so nice in the photos, we thought the price might be a typo. But, to be fair, it is just a 236 ci Inline 6 cylinder engine, and the photos show a car that is in driver quality condition. They say it has 59,705 miles showing on the odometer. They describe the interior as “beautiful.” Take a look at the ad photos at the link. Then click here to watch a walk-around video and take it for a test drive. The car shows well, it has original style hubcaps. Bumpers and trim was all rechromed. Under the hood it is all original. It does have updated disc brakes in front. As a turnkey driver you can’t go wrong with the price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $23,995.

1947 Crosley Coupe

What a treat for our readers here today. This is a 1947 Crosley Coupe. 1947 was the year these classic American microcars resumed production after World War II, and they sold very well. The little Crosley Company sold 19,000 of them that year. Powell Crosley wanted to produce a car that was way more cost effective to own so that every American could afford one. And that is what he accomplished on a scale much smaller than other automotive manufacturers. This car is being offered for sale by Unique Classic Cars in Mankato, Minnsota. We are really impress with the fit and finish on this one. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is only $16,900

1937 Dodge D5 Touring

A really sharp looking 1937 Dodge D5 Touring Sedan was just posted for sale by Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. It has a 218 ci inline 6 with what they report to be 89,641 miles. Open up the suicide rear doors and you’ll see the cleanest mohair interior we have seen this year. It was owned by the same family for better than two decades, and it has been nicely restored. You have to watch their walk-around Video to see this one sparkle in the camera lense. Listen to the six cylinder engine purr. A gem like this one doesn’t come along that often. Look at over 150 photos on their ad page. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is only $19,900. Hurry!

1955 Desoto Firedome

Here is another one. We were pretty amazed when this rare 1955 Desoto Firedome 2-Door Hardtop was listed for sale at such a cheap price. It is being offered for sale at Rock Solid Motorsports in Elkhart, Indiana. They tell us it is powered by a 291 ci Hemi V8 engine. And it is a nice driver, acording to their ad description. Click here to watch a walk-around video and take it for a test drive. They describe the Turquoise and White paint as “very nice” and you can see many photos of the Green cloth interior. It has a Powerflite 2-speed automatic transmission. This Desoto is equipped with factory options such as: power brakes, AM radio (in-op), heater/defrost, and variable speed wipers. This one is rare enough to turn heads wherever you go. It will be our DEAL of the Day on Tuesday. They are asking $18,500.

1964 Ford F100

Harken back to a simpler time when a classic Ford pickup truck was your dailly driver and the world was at peace with itself. Although the basic elements of this interesting 1964 Ford F100 Pickup are all there and it still has a very original look, there are tones of older customizations done to it. The interior and under the hood belie updates that were “cool” in their day. It has a 292 ci V8 with a 3-speed manual transmission and Hurst floor shifter. It has a tach and air conditioning, and now has a Grant GT steering wheel. The Kenwood stereo is hidden under the driver’s seat with CD and MP3 player, and remote control. Click here to see a walk-around video and hear it run. This truck really looks good, and the price is very affordable. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. They are asking $14,900.

1999 Mazda Miata MX-5

Here is a little two-seater sports car you drive and have fun with and it won’t break the bank. This Emerald Green Mica 1999 Mazda Miata MX-5 is featured here at a very affordable price. It is being offered for sale by Legendary Motors LLC in Rowley, Massachusetts. If you are on the East Coast call them right away before this one gets away. They say the paint on the car was refreshed approximately 5 years ago which also included replacement of the convertible top. Both the exterior paint and top show very well. The interior is in good overall condition but shows wear at the driver’s seat. With just 88,603 miles, it has had a fresh set of tires and servicing. Click here to watch a walk-around video and hear it run. If will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. Their asking price is $7,890. Hurry on this one!

1999 Porsche Boxster S

Midwest Car Exchange also has a 1999 Porsche Boxster S at a very attractive price point. They say it is a well-maintained 2-owner roadster that is “ready to cruise.” The current owner has it on consignment at Midwest Car Exchange and says she had the little sports car for two decades and is now deciding to sell it. The sale includes manuals and a clean Carfax. This is the smooth Porsche 2.4L DOHC EFI water-cooled 24-valve engine coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission. It has Force Sensitive Power Assisted rack N pinion steering, plus power 4-wheel vented disc brakes w/4-piston calipers. Power windows, power door locka nd power drivers seat complement the climate control interior. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is $16,900.

Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
