Sweptside Pickup
The great automotive designers of the 1950’s often drew up concept car renderings, and then used 1/30 clay models to visualize their automotive stylings. But, as the story goes, when Dodge decided to make a half-ton pickup truck to compete with Chevrolet’s Cameo Carrier, they sent their Specialty Equipment Group manager out to the parts bin to fashion together sheet metal and chrome to produce their iconic Sweptside pickup truck. It is amazing that the 1957 Dodge D100 Sweptside Pickup turned out as well as it did. Chrysler even called it “the prettiest truck ever built.”
This week on Cars-On-Line.com, a very rare 1957 Dodge D100 Sweptside Pickup was listed for sale by by Worldwide Auctioneers, in preparation for next week’s Auburn Auction during the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival in Auburn, Indiana. The stylish Dodge pickup you see here will be offered to the highest bidder with No Reserve. That’s right, the highest bid will actually own this beautifully restored classic pickup truck. These Sweptside pickups are so rare. They only made 1,260 between 1957 and 1959. This one has the correct 315 ci Hemi V8 engine and a A230 3-speed push button manual transmission. That is a nice two-tone paint job as well.
Back in the day, a work truck could shoulder the heavy loads and tough enough to bang around on dirt roads. But by the mid-1950’s Chrysler recognized that the pickup truck was becoming a family passenger vehicle as well. They totally got it right when they produced the D100 Sweptside in 1957.
“Straight Out of Tomorrow” is how Chrysler described it in their promotions. The wind swept aero-dynamic rear fins were borrowed from the Dodge station wagon. This was accomplished by taking the quarter-panels from a Dodge 2-door wagon including the high tail fins. Those fins were the emblem of the “Forward Look” at Chrysler. Also included were Chrysler innovations like the pushbutton LoadFlite transmission available on their passenger cars. Plus, 12-volt electrical systems became standard issue. The D100 Sweptside was not produced on an assembly line. Instead they hand built them with “off the shelf” parts. The Special Equipment Sales manager borrowed a set of rear fenders from a Dodge two-door wagon, and had them welded to a Dodge half-ton pickup. They had to cut down the tailgate to match the custom fenders, and ran the chrome trim forward. Then they bolted a station wagon bumper on the back. The front fenders were pulled forward similar to the look of the passenger cars with hooded headlamps. For the first time in Chrysler’s history the pickup’s hood was a one-piece lid hinged at the cowl. (Older pickups had two-piece flaps hinged done the center.)
This Dodge Sweptside will go through the auction on Saturday next week. The Auburn Auction will be held at Kruse Plaza in Auburn, Indiana, August 29-31, 2024.

ACD Festival on the Calendar
We are just five days away from the start of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg (ACD) Festival. That’s when all the Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg vintage collector cars come home to Auburn, Indiana where a vibrant auto industry used to reside before World War II. The parade of classic cars on Saturday afternoon is amazing and fun to watch (see our video.) And a visit to the ACD Museum in downtown Auburn will enthrall you for hours. You have to experience this event at least once. You’ll find the ACD Festival when you view the Cars-On-Line Car Show Calendar online.
Handles Like New
We got a chance to do an inspection report on an amazing 2002 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning this week. Honestly, we don’t see too many vehicles that could match up to this one. 1970 Chevelle LS6
This 1970 Chevelle SS is listed as an LS6 in our Chevelle Section today. This car is real interesting because it has special order Hugger Orange paint. (The color was not offered in the brochure.) Equipped with the 454/450 hp big block V8, RK Motors says it is a rare find and they have a video walk-around tour on their ad page. It has all the other goodies too, such as cowl induction hood, hood pins, 4-speed Muncie transmission, power steering, power disc brakes, Strato bucket seats, center console, F41 HD suspension and a factory gauge package. Somebody knew how to order a new car back in the day. They say this classic muscle car has undergone an “extensive nut and bolt restoration.”
’55 Bel Air Show Car
This 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-Door Hardtop is a classic custom built for show and go. It is being offered for sale through Classic Car Marketing in Southern California. They say this car comes from a “museum quality” collection. A frame off restoration, the lowered Chevy has a crate 427 with a built Turbo 400 automatic transmission with 2800 stall converter and dual exhaust. The suspension upgrades included tubular A-arms. Just look at the photos of that custom leather interior. Wow! It has tilt steering, digital dash, ice cold air conditioning and a stereo system hidden away. The look and stance is one-of-a-kind shod with American Racing rims.
GMC Hummer EV
The all-electric 2022 GMC Hummer EV is a rock shattering new wave in pickup trucks. The big electric pickup has amazing acceleration with three electric motors producing all-wheel drive capabilities that only a 1,000 horsepower pickup could make. This crazy off-roader is being offered for sale at Merlin Auto Group in Atlanta. The 11,500 foot-pounds of torque are phenomenal. It will do 0 to 60 in about three seconds. With space age styling and removeable modular sky panels you are really out there with your surroundings. This one has a Bose 14-speaker sound system featuring Centerpoint with an Electric Vehicle Sound Enhancement system designed specifically for the Hummer. It also comes with driver assisted technology for “hands-free” driving and Automatic Lane Change. Options include a power retractable tonneau cover (a $2,300 value.)
Auctions
The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival is coming up next week in historic Auburn, Indiana, the “little Detroit” of the automotive industry back in the day. During the ACD Festival one of the best classic car auctions in the country happens in Auburn as Worldwide Auctioneers will be selling over 400 significant vintage and collectible vehicles at the Kruse Plaza. This is one of the most exciting auctions in the country and always a good show. About 250 of the auction lots will be sold at No Reserve. Here are just a few to whet your whistle.
1956 Chevrolet Nomad
The 1956 Chevrolet Nomad Wagon is the most popular 2-door wagon ever produced. Collectors will take note that this Roman Red over Shoreline Beige example is to be offered at No Reserve during the upcoming Worldwide Auctioneers sale in Auburn next weekend. This special classic Nomad was the subject of a complete restoration. It has some extras such as Vintage Air conditioning and upgraded sound system. It comes with power steering and disc brakes, and now has a 350 ci V8 small block under the hood. The high bidder will own this beauty. Register to bid today.
2020 Ferrari 488 Pista
When the Ferrari 488 Pista first came out in 2018 it was a big upgrade over the other 488’s of that time. The thrilling 711 horsepower Twin-Turbo design made it the highest performing Ferrari in its day. This 2020 Ferrri 488 Pista Spider was ordered new and immediately became part of the Lone Star Collection. It remains a one-owner exotic car. Next Saturday, August 31, it will be sold at No Reserve during the Auburn Auction by Worldwide Auctioneers. A well-optioned car, it has always been properly maintained and comes with a clean Carfax.
1968 Plymouth Hemi GTX
This is one of only 217 GTX’s equipped with the 426 Hemi motor and a 4-speed from the factory in 1968. The 1968 Plymouth Hemi GTX will be offered at No Reserve during the upcoming Auburn Auction in Auburn, Indiana, on Saturday evening in prime time. This original Mopar muscle car has undergone a ground-up restoration completed in 2014. It is seen here finished in its original color of Bright Blue metallic. The 426 Hemi is said to be numbers matching. You can view dozens of detailed photos at the link. The odometer shows very low miles.

Jurassic Park T-Rex Hummer
Here is a 1980 Hummer T-Rex H1 made into a replica of the Jurassic Park movie vehicle. It was built to display during the @SHOT in Las Vegas in 2019. It is being offered for sale this week through Cody’s Classic Cars in Wisconsin. They say it is street legal and runs on pump gas. It has a clean title as a 1980 Hummer. Finished in DuraCoat, it has a Chevrolet Performance small block 350 ci V8 bored .030. That includes an Eagle Forged rotating assembly and 8.5:1 static compression ratio, fed by a Dyers 8-71 Supercharger. They say it was dyno tested to 550 hp. Those are dual Quick-Fuel 650 cfm carbs. 1969 Dodge Super Bee
A Kentucky Baby Boomer has spent a lot of time and money to make this 1969 Dodge Coronet Super Bee come back to life. Sadly he has just listed it for sale so someone else can finish it. He says at this point the car is painted and is “very straight.” It has a 426 Hemi engine built professionally by Hensley Engines in Dandridge, Tennessee. With a 4-speed and a Moser rearend you know it was done right. It needs an interior. You can tell this is going to be a real good car someday.

1967 Chevy Nova SS
Newsletter readers will remember when this 1967 Chevy Nova SS Restomod was recently listed and featured here. Triple black, it has been rotisserie restored. It is now powered by an LS 5.7 engine, 400 hp, and fed by a Holley Terminator X engine management system. It has a T56 6-speed and Moser 9” rearend with Strange 31 spline axles. When this beauty was first listed the private party seller was asking $135,000. But just this week he dropped the price to $115,000.

1969 Shelby GT350 CSS
There were so many knock-offs being made of Shelby Mustangs that Carroll Shelby decided he should get into the game himself. That’s when he started the Carroll Shelby Continuation series. By licensing his name to a set of replicas, Shelby made these Continuation cars very special collector items. This 1969 Shelby GT350 CSS is one of those cars certified by Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc. it comes with a supercharged Boss 302 engine with NACA ducts on the hood and automatic transmission. They say the Grabber Orange tribute is a strong runner.

1971 Dodge Challenger
A Missouri collector has this 1971 Dodge Challenger for sale in totally unrestored condition. He says it is mint in every way. All original paint and interior. Maybe because it has a 318 ci small block motor it is being overlooked. But it is hard to find a Challenger in this kind of condition, and at this price. He says the Butterscotch color was also pretty rare back in the day. The car has low miles and comes from California. One hundred percent rust free, he says it has always been garaged and comes with paperwork to boot. He was asking $49,900 for the Mopar. But just this week he lowered the price to $42,500. Now that is something you have to check out. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday.
1949 Cadillac Series 61
A 1949 Cadillac Series 61 Touring Sedan with the rear tail wings and slantback look was just listed for sale at a very special price point. It is being offered for sale at Streetside Classics in Charlotte, North Carolina. Every time we get one of these late ‘40s Cadillacs they sell quickly. This one will be no exception because the price is right. It has the first year 331 ci V8 engine and a 4-speed Hydramatic automatic transmission. This one has fender skirts and power steering. Upgrades include a new 12-volt system with an alternator. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is only $24,995.
1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe
Just look at this 1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe as it was just posted for sale at Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. Now imagine that you could buy it today at an affordable price. Finished in burgundy paint, it is powered by its original 6 cylinder engine that runs very well. But it is fresh out of long term storage and will need to some TLC to become roadworthy. It needs transmission work for sure. Have it inspected to see what else might be an issue. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is only $11,000.
1953 Buick Special Riviera
In its earliest days, Buick used the name Riviera to designate its stunning 2-Door Hardtop. It wanted to reference the elegance and romance of the French Riviera in the 1940’s. They started using the name in 1949. This week Cody’s Classic Cars in Wisconsin came up with a sharp looking Matador Red 1953 Buick Special Riviera at a very inexpensive price point. What could be smoother than a 263 ci “Fireball Eight” mated to a Dynaflow transmission. And it has Uniroyal white wall tires with the requisite wire wheel covers. They tell us it has all new interior upholstery, carpet and doors. Whisper quiet, they say it runs great. Check out this walk-around video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. The asking price is $19,900.
1962 Plymouth Valiant
The Pllymouth Valiant was one of the best selling cars Chrysler ever produced. Many a new car salesman made his living on those little cars. Here is a 1962 Plymouth Valiant V-100 which they say has only 59,488 miles, and is said to be in “remarkable original and unrestored condition.” It still has its dealer invoice. It is being sold through Classic Auto Showplace in Troy, Michigan. Click here to view their test drive video. This is not a show car, but it is a fun car to own at a very affordable price. It is always a good idean to have it inspected before you buy so you have a better idea what you are getting into. But this one will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $12,700.
1991 Mazda Miata
British Racing Green is a great color on a two-seater sports car. That is what this one has, as it is a 1991 Mazda Miata MX-5 Special Edition. The classic sports car is being offered for sale by Motorcar Classics on Long Island, New York. It is powered by a 1.6L DOHC inline-4 engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. They tell us there are only 42,789 miles on the car. It has tan leather interior and a matching tan soft top. Look at the extraordinary condition as shown in the ad photos. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. Their asking price is $16,900.
2004 Toyota MR2 Spyder
For even more power and performance, here is a 2004 Toyota MR2 Spyder in white with a tan leather interior and canvas top. (See 188 photos on their ad page.) It is being offered for sale at Cody’s Classic Cars in Wisconsin. They tell us it only have 16,000 miles on it, and that it drives as new. Our experience with these MR2’s is that they are a more performance oriented sports car than most of the two-seaters that are out there. It has a 1.8L I4 engine with a semi-automatic 6-speed. Hurry on this one. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is only $19,900.
