Last of the Big Fins
In an era when big fins were a subject of fascination for new car buyers, Mopar led the way. Chrysler’s designer, Virgil Exner, stayed with big fins through 1960. Although most people think the 1959 Cadillac had the biggest tail fins, the Plymouth Sport Fury tail fin that year actually was taller. Arguably, Exner may have beaten Cadillac in the tail fin wars.
This week a private party seller from California has listed a rare 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible for sale. What a treat to see this car. The seller says it underwent a frame off restoration about 13k miles ago. You can tell from the photos that this is a special find. (See all the photos in a Slide Show ad at the link.) It comes with a 361 ci Golden Commando V8 and 2 four barrel carbs in a Wedge setup. You will note that it has the swivel front seats.
The Sport Fury was the top-of-the-line model for Plymouth in 1959. Exner’s design re-invented the Continental kit and embedded a trunk deck treatment that simulated the C-kit. This was called the Sport Deck in Plymouth terminology. The dual antennas were an option. The Sport Fury was the only model that had the “Tiffany Medallion” decorating the rear fender and fin. The big annodized side sweep trim strip accented the medallion. In the photos you can see the push button automatic transmission on the dash. The interior is intricately upholstered with tri-color inner door panels. The padded dash and transluscent deluxe steering wheel were standard on the Sport Fury, although you could order them as options on other models. You could see the instrument cluster right through the steering wheel was you turned. Today it is considered all part of Exner’s Forward Look design.
1959 was the first year for the Sport Fury model which was the top model for Plymouth that year. Because of all the extras that were designed into the Sport Fury it is a breeze to drive. Few cars have the impact that this classic Mopar has. It will stand as iconic through the ages.

Bugatti Reproductions
There is a company in Argentina that specializes in reproductions of the vintage Bugattis and Alfa Romeos of bygone eras. This company, calling themselves Pur Sang Argentina, is a group of master craftsman who build the most detailed replicas of very early Bugatti race cars. These cars are hand-built so only a few can be produced each year. The one you see here is a 1927 Bugatti Type 35 just listed for sale by Legendary Motorcar Company. The Type 35 was one of the most important Grand Prix race cars of its day. It has a hand crafted alloy body with a 4-speed transmission and supercharged 2.3-liter inline-eight cylinder engine. It was built as accurately as possible to the original. They say the exhaust note is similar to the original. This is as close as you can get to the trilling performance of a Type 35 which racked up nearly 2,000 racing victories in the late 1920’s. Many consider the Type 35 to be the most successful race car of all time.

1960 Buick LeSabre
A private party seller from Wesley Chapel, Florida has listed a very rare and hard-to-find 1960 Buick LeSabre Convertible for sale. It is thought that just 13,588 of these cars were produced. Fewer Invictas and Electras were produced, but all three are hard to find in today’s market. It was sold out of the esteemed Rank & Sons Buick Collection in Milwaukee. At the time it was purchased from the collection, it had just 8,584 miles on it. The Rank & Sons Buick Collection was well known for its low miles 1960’s cars. The seller says the odometer now reads only 12,155 miles. They say it has had one repaint in the original Pearl Fawn lacquer. Read about it in the ad. This is a very original LeSabre.
Rare Ford FR-100
This 1953 Ford FR-100 Pickup truck sort of defines the term “rare.” It is one of only two ever made by Ford with cooperation from McLaren. One sold at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale. The two trucks were introduced to the public at the SEMA Show in 2002. They were used to test Ford performance parts. You will find a Ford Racing 5.0 liter Cammer Crate engine under the hood. Extensive body mods have been done to it. It was designed to preserve the look of the original while every body panel was actually refabricated from new. You will note that the hood and doors were altered. The other (black) FR-100 is owned by Tim Allen and it was featured on the Jay Leno show. You can look it up on Youtube. An opportunity like this one doesn’t come up very often.
Real Shelby 427 Cobra
A real 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra has been listed in the COL Shelby Cobra Section online. No, this is not a replica. It is being offered for sale by Legendary Motorcar Company. They tell us it has only 14,662 miles from new. The car has remained original and they say it was never modified. Most important (unlike most Cobras) it still has its original drivetrain. A fresh concours restoration has just been completed on this totally original car. The restoration work was done by Legendary Motorcar Company, one of the premier restoration facilities in the world. It is one of only 100 actual Shelby 427 Street Cobras ever produced. The leather seats have not been restored and remain as factory installed. This is a rare opportunity to own a very original Shelby Cobra in its original color. It is fully documented, and comes with complete history. It is in the Shelby Registry.
Auctions
The GAA Classic Summer Auction comes up next week, July 25-27, 2024, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Collectors from all around the country will be watching the event online or in person. Already the lineup of cars is amazing. We were especially impressed with their selection of muscle cars this year. There are plenty of Chevelles and Camaros in their inventory. Even more impressive is the number of cars being sold at No Reserve for this auction. Here are just a few examples.
1968 Mustang 428 Fastback
A black big block 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback will cross the auction block on Friday July 26 at the Palace, the auction facility in Greensboro, NC where the GAA Classic Auctions are held. This Mustang Pony car has a big block 428 CJ shoehorned into its engine comparment. It will be offered at No Reserve. This high performance Mustang comes with Detroit locker rear end with 31-spline axle, 7.50 carburetor, C6 automatic transmission and Comp Cam. It has C&ME heads and posi traction. Here is a Fastback Mustang done the way it should be. What do you think it will sell for? High bidder takes it with No Reserve.
1961 Ford Sunliner
There will also be some classic cars of the 1950’s and 1960’s offered at this year’s GAA Classic Auction. A real clean 1961 Ford Galaxie Sunliner will cross the auction block on Friday. A very desirable convertible Sunliner is rare to find in this type of condition. And it will be offered at No Reserve. Check the photos at the link. It is seen here in factory code W Garden Green Turquoise exterior. The new base/clear paint will entice you. It comes with dual exhaust, power top and a new green/beige 2-tone interior. Under the hood this Sunliner has a 4-barrel carburetor. See the list below for more classic convertibles to be offered at the GAA Classic summer auction.
2013 Wrangler Sahara
As always, you can expect a good selection of trucks and off-road vehicles at the summer edition of the GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro. This 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sahara is a good example. They call this the Geico Green Edition, standing out in its special green exterior. And it comes with a Mickey Thompson wheel package as well. And it has a lift kit. But this Sahara Edition is loaded inside with a leather interior and Navigation. Amazingly, it will be offered at No Reserve. If you have been looking for a Wrangler to go off-roadin’ or just to show off in the neighborhood, this is one you want to bid on. It will be sold at No Reserve on Thursday, July 25.

This week Southern Motors has once again listed a beautiful 1967 Pontiac GTO for sale with a detailed inspection video. Dave says it is a frame-off restoration on a clean original South Carolina car. It comes with PHS documents and he says it is a true 242 VIN GTO. Note the beautiful Cameo Ivory paint when you watch the video walk-around. He says it has the matching numbers 400/334 hp ci engine. 1975 Corvette
A 1975 Corvette Coupe has been listed this week by Classical Gas Motors in Texas. They say this classic Corvette still has just 17,445 miles. They know that the previous title says only 15k miles so they believe it to be original. They’ve got it listed for an affordable price. And it comes with power steering, power brakes, power windows, air conditioning and tilt steering. Corvette collectors should check this one out.

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1925 Cadillac Phaeton
Gullwing Motor Cars out of Astoria, New York just posted a very interesting project car for restoration. Although it has been off the road since 1984, this 1925 Cadillac Phaeton is ready for a complete restoration. It comes with all-weather gear, but is currently not running. Gullwing says it is complete, solid and intact with good panel and door fitment. This is a V-63 model with the 314.5 ci V8. It has been updated with a crossplane crankshaft. Those who know Cadillacs know the V-63 was a benchmark design in auto manufacturing.

1956 Ford F100 Custom
Last week’s feature car here in the newsletter was an old school 1956 Ford F100 Big Window Pickup truck which was purpose built to enter into top car shows. Although it looks very original, it has a blueprinted 347 ci stroker motor and custom Thunderbird valve covers. It has incredible custom leather themed interior. Although he was originally asking $135,000 for the classic custom truck, the private party seller has just lowered the price to $105,000. I think you’ll agree that this is a lotta’ truck for the money.

1966 Mustang GT350
Part muscle car and part restomod, this 1966 Mustang GT350 is a tribute to the Shelby’s of bygone eras. It represents everything that made the Shelby Mustang so popular but with rebuilt 5.0 liter fuel injected engine, 5-speed manual transmission and 17-inch American Racing wheels. A set of Hedman headers flow through a dual exhaust system with balancing tube and throaty sounding glass-packs. Wow! This is the way you roll in 2024!

2000 Corvette Custom
This is some impressive custom paint on this 2000 Corvette Coupe just listed for sale by Unique Classic Cars out of Mankato, Minnesota. They usually do a video presentation and lots of descriptive history on their cars. But this one will probably sell before they can even get those items on their website. That’s because their price is so low. Hey, this one even has a matching themed custom interior. Call Unique for more details. We assume it will have an LS based Chevy engine and transmission. You can see the tinted glass roof in the photos. You can see enough in the photos to know you want to call them and find out more. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is only $13,900.
1940 Ford Standard
A 1940 Ford Standard Coupe was just posted for sale by Carbuffs out of California. They say this 1940 Ford Standard Coupe is rust free from top to bottom. Owned by the same family since 1973, they have kept it up with a flathead engine rebuild and LeBaron Bonney seat kit. It has a 3-speed manual transmission and white-wall bias ply tires. They think it may have been painted about 12 years ago, and comment that the paint seems to have held up well. It comes with a clean California title. The seller says it runs and drives well. 1955 Pontiac Chieftain
Another listing by Carbuffs shows a 1955 Pontiac Chieftain in what looks to be driver quality condition. They say it is a clean car overall with a clean California title. They think the white and yellow two-tone exterior was done in the late 1970’s and they say it still shows pretty decent. The green interior can be noted in the ad photos. It probably has some flaws worth noting. It has the 287 ci V8 engine and they say it runs well with the automatic Hydra-matic transmission. They say the radiator was recently recored and the carburetor was rebuilt. Click here to view a walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is $19,950.
1980 Shay Model A
One of the best reproductions of a Ford Model A was done by Shay Motors Corporation. This company built such authentic looking Model A replicas that Ford sold them through their dealerships. Ford even offered a 12,000-mile or one-year warranty on the cars. Here is a 1980 Shay Model A Roadster being offered for sale at Cody’s Classic Cars in Wisconsin. It was a 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe model with dual sidemounts. It has a 2.4L 4 cylinder motor and all 1980 Ford parts that are easy to obtain. It is showing only 12k miles. 1979 Blakely Bearcat
Richard Blakely tried in earnest to build a kit car company based on the Bantam roadster. His designs included the Blakely Bearcat, a two-seater sports car inspired by the Lotus 7. More of a gentleman’s sports car than a racer, the Bearcat. This is a 1979 Blakely Bearcat which was built on a Ford Pinto platorm with parts easily accessibly from Mercury Bobcats or Ford Mustang. This car is being offered for sale at Streetside Phoenix. The 2.3L I4 that powers the little roadster is backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. It comes with tilt steering, heated seats and custom paint. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. Their asking price is $18,995.
1971 VW Super Beetle
Connors Motorcar Company out of W. Chester, Pennsylvania has a fresh 1971 VW Super Beetle Convertible in their inventory this week. It is a sharp looking two-tone with what they consider an “excellent white top.” They say it is powered by a 1600 cc 4-cylinder engine, 4-speed transmission, with alloy wheels, and fully serviced. In their description they note that is “runs and drives great!” It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. They are asking only $14,500.
1977 MGB Roadster
Unique Classic Cars out of Mankato, Minnesota is a wholesale auto broker. They specialize in collectible cars and sports cars. They are “unique” in what they do. For instance, today they listed a white 1977 MGB Convertible with a manual transmission. There is no description written yet on this one, and it may be that the car will sell before they put a description on the site. That happens. Take a look at the photos and call them. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $12,900.
