Legendary Boss 9
The story line would make a great novel, yet the truth is more scintillating than fiction. Ford was plotting to dominate NASCAR with a Semi-Hemi motor that couldn’t be beat. NASCAR’s homologation rules required that Ford Motor Company had to build 500 vehicles to be sold to the public with the Boss 429 motor in order to compete in NASCAR. They figured out a way to shoe-horn the Boss 9 motor into a Mustang with major modifications. Because the popular Mustang brand carried the Boss 9 engine in street version it allowed them to run the monster motor in the Torino Talladega in NASCAR. Even Richard Petty got lured into the action as he jumped over to Ford for 1969 just to get a chance to see how the Boss 429 engine would run in the aero-dynamic Torino variants.
Meanwhile Ford was selling the Boss 429 Mustang to the public. The rest is history. Today the Mustang Boss 429 cars are more valuable than Mopar Hemi cars.
This week a 1969 Boss 429 Mustang was listed for sale by Legendary Motorcar Company, one of the premier classic car dealers in North America. (In fact they also posted a 1970 Boss 429 Mustang which you can find below in the New Listings.) The Royal Maroon Boss 9 is the product of a nut and bolt rotisserie restoration. Starting with a numbers matching Boss 429 engine and numbers matching 4-speed, the Semi-Hemi Mustang received a top quality restoration. The interior features black Clarion knit/Corinthian vinyl Hi-Back bucket seats in excellent condition. Even the undercarriage shows the high quality of work done.
An excellent example of what a collectible muscle car is all about, this Boss 429 does not disappoint. It would be the perfect center piece for any high level collection.

Classic Car News This Week
Insurance Rate Inflation
Collector car insurance rates are likely to go up according to a report done by a British data company. Uswitch just posted its latest report on 2024 classic car insurance statistics. Although their U.S. counterparts have not issued a statement on rates here, we have only to look at the data to see rate hikes in our futures. The collector car insurance industry in the United Kingdom is worth $967 million. The average premium paid for driving a collector car in London is $949 a year. Here in the U.S. our average cost is about $400 for a 65-year-old collector to drive a $40,000 car. That can quickly increase to $1,100 a year for a $100,000 car. Windows Copilot says collector car insurance here in the U.S. is about 36 percent less than the cost of regular insurance. Remember that it is assumed that collectors do not drive their hobby cars as often as they do their regular daily drivers. Uswitch estimates that the cost of insurance premiums in the UK have risen 1.6 percent. Teenage drivers can pay up to 400 percent more than older drivers to drive collector cars. Interestingly, Porsches are the most frequently insured cars in the UK, while Ferraris are the most expensive. Click here to read the Uswitch study.
Packard Club Nationals
We visited the showfield at the 2024 Packard Club Nationals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this week. The cars on the judging field at the Greenfield Park yesterday were resplendent pieces of Packard history. One of our favorites was a 1928 Packard Roadster with woodlights and stunning two-tone paint scheme. I wouldn’t have wanted to be a judge at this show. There were so many top show winners present that it would be hard to pick the best ones out of these Packards. The Packard Club members attending this year’s Nationals have had quite a week. The cruises and road tours included scenic roads and some interesting nationally known musuems. Click here to read our full report on the Packard Club Nationals.
Out EV-ing the Chinese
If the Chinese automakers think they have Tesla on the ropes with their inexpensive EV electric cars, they may have to watch out for Stellantis’ next punch. Jeep has announced that it will be rolling out an all-electric Jeep EV for under $25,000. Jeep already has a small EV SUV they call the Avenger which they only sell in Europe. It will not work in the U.S. market unless they make it bigger. It would also have to be 4-wheel-drive, which the Avanger is not. The Avenger is sold in full electric and hybrid versions in some countries. They say there were 40,000 pre-orders for the Avenger in Europe. But the Avenger sells for about $38,000 there now. The Jeep Avenger is produced in Poland and was designed in Italy. There is much speculation on how Stellantis is going to get a North American Jeep EV on the market for under $25,000. Would you bet on that?

1958 Impala Convertible
Although Chevrolet’s most popular car was probably the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible, the car they came out with in 1958 may be even more valuable to collectors today. They introduced the 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible that year, and it stole the hearts of American car enthusiasts right from the gitgo. This week a California collector listed his Snowcrest White 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible for sale. A really nice ’58 coming on the market is big news. But this one is extra special because he says it has only 24,989 original miles. Nicely equipped, the description says it comes with the 283 ci V8, Powerglide transmission, power steering, power brakes, push button radio, front fender mounted mirrors, dual rear antennas, spinners and a Continental kit. It looks great in the photos. Don’t you wonder what driving it would be like with such low miles?
Rare Hupmobile Custom
You may remember when this stunning 1941 Hupmobile Skylark Custom won the Gene Winfield trophy at the Syracuse Nationals. Or you may have seen it in Street Rodder magazine when they featured it. This is an historic and breathtaking custom build done by Lang’s Custom Auto and Trim in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Only 319 of these Skylarks were produced in the waning days of the Hupmobile. Note the Dupont Hot Hues metallic pearl paint with Champagne Fizz two tone. The custom graphics are by Paul Quinn of Design Brilliance. It has a Gill Davis Racing 454 engine and Currie 9-inch rear end. The suspension is Heidts Super Ride with independent front and Ride Tech air bags. The Flaming River power rack is used for steering and it has power 4-wheel disc brakes. Click here to watch a captivating walk-around video and hear it run. There is something about these Art Deco era cars that is so alluring that you just can’t stop looking at it. This is the one.

1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass S
A real nice 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass S is being offered for sale this week at Ross Customs in Michigan. Ross used a video to give us a tour of this factory Rally Red car. It is a factory 4-speed car with all original grille and wheel moldings. Clean. Just look at the video to see how clean and straight it is. That’s saying something because these Cutlasses have a lot of curvy sheet metal. This one has the FE package suspension, too. This is the way you want to buy a Cutlass. Nice.

It is being offered for sale through Unique Classic Cars out of Mankato, Minnesota. They say this Impala SS has only 5,300 actual miles. Now that you don’t see everyday. Deals of the Day
1964 Ford Fairlane
A private party seller from Caanan, New Hampshire is offering his 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 Sport Coupe for sale this week. He just posted the ad yesterday. He says it has the 289 2-barrel and a three-on-a-tree manual transmission with the car showing only 66k miles. Most important, he says it runs and drives well. The car remains all original except for the wheels. With an appealing color scheme and good solid condition, collectors love to find these cars in totally original condition. Look at the photo of the upholstery. That is amazing. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is $22,500.
1955 Ford Thunderbird
Our readers may have noticed the way a classic car broker out of California sells so many first generation Ford Thunderbirds at really low prices. That is because many of them are fresh out of storage. Here is a 1955 Ford Thunderbird they just listed for sale. The Torch Red T-Bird comes with a white removeable hardtop. They say it will need new window cranks however. You should have it inspected to find out more about the car. They tell us it is mechanically sound and combines performance with a touch of nostalgia. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $24,750. That is a discount to the average collector price.
1950 Plymouth Special
A woman from Crete, Illinois listed this 1950 Plymouth Deluxe for sale this week. She did not have a photo so she used a reproduction of the flyer she had of the car (see the photo on the ad page.) You may want to have a pre-purchase inspection done to know more. It looks to be an original type classic car with the original engine, 6 bolt system with a 3-speed manual transmission on the column. The exterior paint was redone in 2009, according to the ad copy. No mention of the interior condition (thus, the inspection.) But she says it is “rust free” and “garage stored.” The price is certainly a plus. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is $15,000.
1960 Bentley S2 Saloon
Beverly Hills Car Club has also come up with a very interesting classic to whet your whistle. Here is a 1960 Bentley S2 Saloon classic luxury car with the elegance and panache you would expect from Bentley. Sift through all the photos. I think you will agree that this is an interesting find at a discounted price. It is right-hand-drive, however. It has an automatic transmission with steering column control, V8 engine, Wagner Halogen headlights, Smith instrumentation, interior wood trim and fender-mounted antenna. It came with power windows and folding “grey poupon” trays in the rear. Dare I say, this would make a really cool restomod. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. The asking price is $18,750.
1974 Ford E100 Van
If you are a fan of classic Ford Econoline vans, than this 1974 Ford E100 Van is the one you want to check out. The listing is from Canada, and the advertiser calls this van “stunning.” This is the last year they made the “snub nose” E100 van. They say the paint is beautiful, with all the chrome and trim in “excellent condition.” It is powered by a 302 CI, 2-BBL V-8 engine and a rebuilt C4 automatic transmission. It has a Ford 9-inch rear end with 3:25 gears. It has new interior and flooring that was just installed and looks fantastic. New dual exhaust was just installed and features Dynomax mufflers that sound impressive. You can see extensive photos of the undercarriage. Click here to watch a full walk-around video. This is a lotta van for the money. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $26,974.
2003 Nissan 350Z
There is no argument that a Nissan 350Z sports car is an over achiever among sports cars. The performance is thrilling and the quality is second to none. So here is a 2003 Nissan 350Z which was just listed for sale at Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. In red with a gray interior, it is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine and shifted by a proper 6-speed manual transmission for that sports car feel. They it runs and drives excellent with no warning lights, noises, or leaks. This is a 2 owner car with no modifications and a clean Carfax report. The paint may be faded in some areas with the clear coat peeling. They also say that the struts need to be replaced. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. Their asking price is only $12,500.
1977 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II
Beverly Hills Car Club also listed this 1977 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II classic looking luxury saloon with a nice looking two-tone exterior in Caribbean Blue and Silver Mink. They believe the paint is still factory original so a complete pre-purchase inspection is warranted to find out more. It is equipped with an automatic transmission with steering column control, V8 engine, SU dual carburetors, power steering, single exhaust outlet, Lucas branded headlights, front fog lights, and chrome bumpers with overriders. Its features include automatic speed control, power windows, electronic door locks, center console, electric seat controls and an Alpine radio. Some cars issue a statement. This one says luxury. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is $12,750.
