Budget Muscle Car
Back in ’68 it didn’t matter what your budget was to buy a new car, Chrysler would put a Hemi in it for you. That meant you could buy the bargain priced muscle car like a Plymouth Road Runner, put a Hemi in it and just go drag racing. Since Hemi Road Runners were by and large purpose built for drag racing, not that many were ordered in ’68.
A private party seller from San Diego just posted this beautiful B5 Blue 1968 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner for sale this week. It was originally sold through the Swift Dodge dealership in Sacramento, California early in ’68. This car has remained in California its entire life, says the seller. He says all the sheet metal is original and the stampings are present. “Everything about this car appears to be period / numbers correct down to the wiper motor and classic Road Runner ‘beep-beep’ horn,” he says in the ad copy. A list of the order specs is given in the ad based on the fender tag codes.
Chrysler introduced the Road Runner for the first time in 1968 to give new car buyers a chance to own a GTX type muscle car at a lower price point, a poor man’s GTX, you might say. The Road Runner sold well and was a popular offering for Mopar that year. However, only 840 426 Hemi-equipped 2-door coupes were produced, and only 449 had the A833 “Synchro Silent” 4-speed transmission. Restored by its 2nd owner, and included in the Galen Govier registry since 1991, this car had been driven a mere 2000+ miles since the redo.
If you’ve always wanted to own a real Hemi car, and know what it feels like to drive one, this is a relatively inexpensive way to follow your dream. It’s Mopar, or no car. You only live once.

Classic Car News This Week
Raleigh Classic
We hope you were able to watch the historic Raleigh Classic Auction last weekend. It was interesting to see what collector cars are selling for in real time in the auction environment. Our Facebook fans were following the action as we discussed some of the important sales all afternoon on Saturday. The high point of the sale was when this 1970 Buick Gran Sport Stage 1 Convertible sold for $115,000. Another Gran Sport Stage 1 convertible sold also that afternoon. You can click here to review our coverage of the Raleigh Classic Auction as it unfolded in Youngsville, North Carolina last weekend. We are looking forward to the next auction in December 2024. You can watch our COL Car Show Calendar for the dates as they are scheduled.
This Weeks Featured Stories
2003 Corvette Pace Car
Back in 2003, the pace car for the Brickyard 400 NASCAR Race was a Chevy SSR, but they used the Corvettes from the Indy 500 race as Festival Cars that year. So here is a 2003 Corvette 50th Anniversary Convertible which saw double duty as a Corvette Indy 500 Pace Car carrying Muhomed Ali around the track during the Festival parade and also doubling as a Brickyard 400 Festival Car later that year. This historic car is being offered for sale this week in our Corvette Section online. It is one of the 54 Corvettes ordered for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and was actually used at the event (see photos.) This historic car still has only 2,250 miles, and comes with a binder of documentation. You will find it in our Corvette Section today online. (Click the link to see 672 Corvettes for sale today in the Corvette Section.)
Rare E-Bird Thunderbird
Ford’s fascination with performance and innovation drove them to do some interesting things back in the mid-1950’s. Here is a 1957 Ford Thunderbird which looks like any of the thousands of early T-Birds that have survived, except that this one is a rare “species” of T-Bird. This 1957 Ford Thunderbird is what collectors call an “E-Bird.” The name comes from the fact that Ford used a coding system to order special items to be installed as options. This one was an E Code car, meaning it would get one of the rare dual 4-barrel carburetors perched atop a Thunderbird 312 ci V8 with a special air cleaner. Only 1,441 E Code cars were produced, and 1957 was the only year you could order the package. It produces 270 horsepower, more than any other small block V8 at that time. This white E-Bird is being offered for sale at Orlando Classic Cars in Florida this week. They tell us it has undergone a “stunning frame-off restoration” to a very high standard.
Supra Twin Turbo
Many of our readers will be surprised to find out that back in the 1990’s Toyota made a Twin Turbo Supra that is now skyrocketing in value on the collector car market. A few hundred of these 1994 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo Mark IV’s with a 6-speed manual transmission were ordered here in the U.S. They were designed by Toyota to compete with the Porsche 928 GTS and the Acura NSX at the time so it qualifies to be considered an exotic sports car. In fact, they say it was actually faster than either the 928 GTS or the NSX. The car sold here in the U.S. was limited to 155 mph, and would do 0 to 60 in five seconds with the Turbos singing away. A private party seller has this rare Supra Twin Turbo for sale this week in our Exotic Car Section online. The ad has a link to a full inspection report. His documentation shows it has only 28,800 miles from new. A car which exactly matches this one sold for $175,000 at the RM Auction at Amelia Island in 2016. This one is considered a high No 3 condition car and will be offered at quite a discount to that price.

1966 Chevy Nova Pro Street
Let’s burn some rubber with this “Nasty” ‘66 Nova. (Click the video window above to view.) Greg at Vanguard Motor Sales is having the time of his life with this 1966 Chevrolet Nova Pro Street with the Mickey Thompsons on the back. Check out the interior. That’s almost too pretty for a Pro Street. Cheetah shifter, transbrake, linelock, and much more. Wait till you open the trunk. Lots of surprises here in this video. Make sure to click that seat belt and hold on.

Collector Cars with Low Miles
2021 Corvette Coupe 2LT
The new mid-engine designed Corvettes were born to be collectible. Obviously the original owner of this 2021 Corvette Coupe 2LT Z51 thought that way. There are only 80 miles on this amazing sports car. It’s almost like it was too nice to drive. Chevrolet took the Corvette to the next level in the C8 models with mid-engine design. It features the 6.2L V8 DI HP engine and has the 8-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. It may be the lowest-mile 2021 Corvette available on the market today. It’s still “in the wrapper.”
Here are more recent Low Miles additions:
1981 Camaro Z28, Orlando Classic Cars, FL, only 900 miles
1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Orlando Classic Cars, FL, 11,000 miles
2004 Ford Thunderbird, Orlando Classic Cars, FL, 14,000 miles
1990 Cadillac Fleetwood, Orlando Classic Cars, FL, 18,000 miles
1976 Chevrolet C20 Pickup, Stanley, WI, 35k actual miles
1986 Pontiac Fiero GT, Last Detail, 37k miles
1996 Corvette Collector Edition, North Shore Classics, IL, 39k miles
You’ll find these and hundreds more in our Low Miles Section online now.
Project Vehicles for Restoration
1941 Packard 120
Readers may remember when we featured a 1941 Packard 120 Convertible here in the newletter. Well here is a chance to get one at a very significant discount to that one. Gullwing Motor Cars in New York just listed a Packard 120 with the Darrin styling as a project car awaiting a comprehensive recommissioning. It has been restored once. Since it has been in long term storage it will need to be cosmetically and mechanically gone through. They say it could easily be made into a presentable driver class car.

Price Reduced
1988 Pontiac Fiero GT
Sellers are really dropping their prices to get a quicker sale this week. Our newsletter readers will remember the 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT which was redone as a Ferrari Tribute. It was featured in our Replica Section last week. Well, the private party seller really wants to move this car. Look at the photos. This one may have be one of the better replicas we’ve seen. Only a pre-purchase inspection report will help verify that. But hurry. Last week he was asking $34,500. He just dropped his price to $24,995. If that doesn’t get your heart pumping … what will?

Deals of the Day
1969 Ford Cobra
Here is a rare muscle car that you would not expect to find listed with the discounted muscle cars. Yet here one is! This is a 1969 Ford Cobra (a Fairlane variant, not a Torino) which were produced in limited numbers. They were a “poor man’s Talladega” of sorts because they came with a 428 Cobra Jet V8 engine but had a low price point than the high end Torinos. It is being offered for sale today at the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. This car needs a lot of TLC, but has tons of potential. Read the whole description on their ad page. Then have it inspected to get an independent third party opinion on the car. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Hurry! The price is only $29,000.
1956 Ford Thunderbird
Our newsletter readers know what we always say about classic first generation Thunderbirds … “If you find one for under $30,000 … buy it.” That is our rule of thumb for No. 3 condition or better cars. Here is a 1956 Ford Thunderbird in Gunmetal gray with a white hardtop. It is being offered for sale by Unique Classic Cars out of Mankato, Minnesota. They are a classic car wholesaler and they go through a lot of great collector cars. This one looks pretty good in the photos. It just came in so it may need detailing and TLC at this point. So you should have it inspected before you buy. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is only $26,900.
1980 Corvette
Classic Auto Mall has another deal that you might like. This black 1980 Corvette Coupe is being offered at a discount to its average value. This body style is very popular among Corvette collectors. It has the lower horsepower L48 small block V8 engine and a 4-speed manual transmission. (That’s pretty rare.) What’s more, they say it has less than 100,000 miles. It may be of interest to you because they say it has been garage kept by the same owner for over 35 years. There is a list of updates you can read in the ad. It comes with tilt and telescopic steering, and a center console. There is notable wear on the interior. (See photos.) It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is only $17,500.
1999 Porsche Boxster
It is not everyday you get a shot at acquiring a late model Porsche Boxster at a discounted price. This 1999 Porsche Boxster is being offered for sale this week at Flemings Ultimate Garage. They say it has low miles and has been serviced. The Carfax certifies the car as low miles, it has the legendary Porsche 2.5L with 24-valve six cylinder motor rated at 240 horsepower. It comes with a new black canvas convertible top. The Porsche Tiptronic automatic transmission allows you to change to manual mode. They describe the Porsche Arena Red metallilc paint as having a “mirror finish.” It is hard to believe you can buy a car like this at this price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday this coming week. Their asking price is $19,900.
1972 VW Squareback
Collecting Volkswagens is a bigger part of the collector car market than we give it credit for. This week, Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois came up with a great example. Look at the panel fitment and styling on this 1972 VW Type 3 Wagon with the luggage rack on top. These cars provided economy plus a roomy interior much like a big station wagon. These were often called Squarebacks back in the day. This one is finished in tan over tan interior. It is powered by the big 1600 cc 4-cylinder engine with dual carburetors. It also has a 4-speed transmission. This car has been driven daily by a mechanic. Click here to view a walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is only $13,500.
1995 Cadillac Fleetwood
Cadillacs are like the “Gold Standard” for the collector car market. And today you can’t get a big luxury Cadillac anymore. That makes the market for a 1995 Cadillac Fleetwood with low miles like this one. This one is still at a very low price point, so it is worth looking into. It is being sold this week at North Show Classics in Mundelein, Illinois. Just look at the interior on this big luxury car. Click here to watch their walk-around video. You can see it presents well, fairly clean inside and still has a grand elegance. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. Their asking price is $14,900.
2006 BMW Z4 Roadster
Based on the excellent quality of BMW cars, this 2006 BMW Z4 Roadster looks like a real nice way to spend the summer season. It is being sold this week at Verrillo Motor Car Company in New York. The 3.0 Inline six BMW comes with the Premium Package 6-speed automatic and just 51,000 miles. This roadster has some things to its credit. It features Bluetooth, automatic black cloth top, 4-wheel vented disc brakes, front and rear stabilizer bars and a center link rear suspension. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $18,999.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
2013 Toyota Tacoma | $17,500 | Staunton, IL |
1977 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC | $12,900 | Mundelein, IL |
1991 Cadillac Allante | $11,900 | Stanley, WI |
1986 Lincoln Town Car | $4,500 | Lodi, WI |
Cars for under $10,000:
