Rare Mopar Muscle
There are some muscle car collectors who still think the first Plymouth ‘Cudas were produced in 1970. Actually, the first Barracuda to be christened with the ‘Cuda street slang name was produced by Plymouth in 1969. Most Mopar fans referred to the Barracuda by the nickname ‘Cuda. So in 1969 Plymouth picked up on the slang term and branded it for its high performance models that year. These cars are so rare that only the initiated know of their existence.
When a 1969 Plymouth A56 Cuda was listed this week we knew it was rare. So we did a little research. Man, “rare” doesn’t do it justice. This A56 fastback listing may rock the Mopar world! Although they say there were over 600 A56 package cars produced (both notchback coupes and fastbacks), this one is even more rare. There were only 568 fastbacks produced with a Commando 340 engine at 10.5:1 compression. And only 166 came with the Torqueflite automatic transmission as this one did. (There were also 359 M-Code ‘Cudas produced with a 440 ci big block V8, and 462 A57 ‘Cudas which came with the 383 ci big block.)
The white ‘Cuda comes from Pennsylvania. The seller says it has a matching numbers engine and looks “as new” except for the convenience of having radial tires. They say it came with front disc brakes from the factory.
The designation A56 Cuda was a factory package for the A-body 1969 Plymouth Barracuda that would be sold with the new ‘Cuda model branding. Requisite with the A56 package was a 340 ci V8 engine. The A56 package also includes the hood stripes, the stripes on the rockers, ‘Cuda 340 legend on the fenders and the scoops on the hood. They say the A56 ‘Cuda came with all the Heavy Duty items that the Formula S package had.
Take a good look at this fastback version A56 ‘Cuda. It is identical to one that was sold at the first Mecum Auction in Harrisburg back in 2018. There are not many of these around. This one is for sale this week. Ask the seller about the documentation. There is a lot of Mopar history wrapped up in this car right here.

Corvette E-Ray to Pace Indy
It was announced last week that a hybrid version of Chevrolet’s Corvette will once again pace the field at the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500 Championship Race on Memorial Day weekend in 2024. The car that will lead the field to green at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this year on May 26th is a 2024 Corvette E-Ray Coupe. The E-Ray is the first electric hybrid Corvette, as well as the first hybrid to pace the legendary race at Indy. Power to the rear wheels comes from a 6.2 liter LT2 V8 engine while an electric all-wheel-drive hybrid motor drives the front wheels. They say the Arctic White E-Ray will do 0 to 60 in a blistering 2.5 seconds and capture a quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds. It is the fastest Corvette Chevrolet has ever produced. The Pace Car will feature the Corvette 3LZ package. 2024 will be the twenty-first time that a Corvette has paced the Indianapolis race. In fact, a Corvette has paced the last eight Indy 500’s consecutively.

1970 Superbird
The Plymouth Superbird is a halo car for Mopar collectors today. Few survive in unrestored original condition, however. That’s what we have here as Fast Lane Classic Cars out of St Charles, Missouri (St. Louis area) just posted a Limelight Green 1970 Plymouth Superbird with a numbers matching 440 Six Pack and numbers matching 727 Torque-Flite automatic transmission. Check out the black vinyl roof and black bench seat interior. It has power steering, 8 ¾ rear end with Sure-Grip and power front disc brakes. They tell us it is one of only 408 Six Pack automatics produced. They are only unrestored and original once. How many could there be like this one?
Shelby GT350R
Obviously Shelby American did not make enough GT350 race cars back in the day. Today they are such hot collector items that Shelby American started reproducing them again under the Shelby Continuation Series brand. Now, with the resto mod craze consuming the market, these cars are incredibly valueable as they are each one custom built to personal taste. This week a private collector from Florida put one of these Continuation Mustang Cobra’s up for sale. This car is listed as a 1965 Mustang GT350 R, one of the Continuation Series Shelby Cobra’s sanctioned by Shelby American. Built to dominate in the SCCA’s Autocross class, its 347 ci 450 hp stroker motor accelerates from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds. Take a look at that intake in the photos. The all new racing cockpit is ripe with driver specific improvements over the old Shelbys. Want to have some fun?
Oldsmobile W30 Convertible
Here is just what Dr. Oldsmobile ordered. A 1969 Oldsmobile 442 W30 Convertible was listed for sale this week from the hallowed halls of the Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania. How rare is it? One of 121 convertible W30 cars built; one of 30 built with an automatic transmission; and one of six automatics known to exist. To make that even more spectacular, this one has a paper trail to document its pedigree. Now this is what car collecting is all about. It has a Protect-O-Plate, Certificate of Authenticity, broadcast card and a Rocket Report. The Classic Auto Mall tells us it was expertly restored and has a recently rebuilt service replacement engine. The transmission is numbers matching and it has the corect TO coded rear axle. To top that, they say they can prove that the 7,759 miles showing on the odometer are correct. It really doesn’t get any better than this.
Auctions

There is an interesting lineup of collector cars ready to cross the auction floor in Youngsville, North Carolina during the upcoming Raleigh Spring Classic Auction in Youngsville, North Carolina, May 31-June 1, 2024. Pick out the ones you want to buy now so you can have them inspected prior to the event at the end of the month. The Raleigh Classic is one of those “hidden gems” of the collector car hobby. It is where some of the finest collections in the Southeastern U.S. bring their cars to “trim the herd.” Here is a quick preview of some of the cars we will be watching.
1960 Cadillac Convertible
This is the type of auction where top collectors from all over the country will pay big money for classic Cadillacs such as this 1960 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible which will cross the auction floor on Saturday, June 1, 2024. 1970 Dodge Challenger
Also set to cross the auction block on Saturday is a Sublime Green 1970 Dodge Challenger with a Shaker hood, 440 ci V8 and a 6-Pack set of carbs. The 4-speed Mopar muscle car comes with a Hurst Pistol Grip shifter. Of course, it has the HD suspension, 8 ¾” rear end and 3.55 gear ratio. This is the kind of quality muscle car you will find at the Raleigh Classic. Check the listings below at the link for more top muscle cars that will be sold at the Raleigh Spring Classic Auction in Youngsville, North Carolina at the end of the month.
1996 Chevy Impala SS
There are a number of savvy classic car dealers who come to the Raleigh Classic auctions just to find incredible low miles cars such as this 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS. It will cross the auction block on Friday, May 31, 2024. There are only 397 miles on this car since it was new! (Really, it still is “new.”) And it was well bought with lots of options; i.e., 17” aluminum wheels, full coil-over suspension, rear-wheel drive, power steering, power ABS disc brakes, air conditioning, leather sport bucket seats, all power options, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, 5.7L V8, leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear spoiler, heavy-duty cooling system, limited-slip rear axle, and dual 6-way power seats. Custom Corvette Show Car
A Virginia collector is selling a very different kind of collector Corvette. This 1970 Corvette Stingray is a custom show car from the 1980’s. It has been remarkably preserved, although the current owner does not know much about its history. They are looking for anyone who remembers this car being at car shows back then. The custom paint and pinstripping is so stunningly preserved that it must have been done by a top custom hot rod shop. Click the video window above to see it in motion.

The car still has clean floors, frame rails and trunk. Check out the walk-around video and hear it run.

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1970 Dodge Challenger
It looks like quite a bit of work has already been done to this 1974 Dodge Challenger project car. They might have tried to make it a restomod with Rallye body package. The seller from Conroe, Texas says it is currently not running. This is a good example of a car that you might want to have inspected before you buy to get a chance to find out what still needs to be done (or redone) to make it a running, driving car. How much would it be worth as a restomod?
The following are just some of the cars available in the Project Car Section this week:
1972 Mustang Mach 1, Classic Car Deals, FL
1968 Chevrolet Nova SS from Erie, CO
