LT1 Leads The Way
Does anyone know how many LT1 Corvette roadsters were built in 1971? That question has been burning in my brain ever since I saw this 1971 Corvette LT1 Convertible as it was being listed for sale this week. When the big block muscle car era was coming to a close the Corvette LT1 became the symbol of performance for the future. The times were changing and the handwriting was on the wall for the end of the muscle car era. Emissions mandates and gas shortages would eventually put an end to big engines so horsepower had to come in smaller packages.
The Ontario Orange 1971 Corvette LT1 Convertible was listed by Verrillo Motorcar Company out of Clifton Park, New York. They say it comes with a window sticker and its original Protect-O-Plate in the original booklet. It has the original Holley 4-barrel carburetor and a 4-speed close ratio manual transmission. It is a legitimate 140 mph Stingray with the advanced long travel suspension. These Corvette small blocks were tuned to get similar performance as the big block cars. It was the last of the chrome steel bumper C3 Corvettes. This stunning LT1 roadster has two NCRS Top Flight Awards to its credit. Making it even more rare is the original Ontario Orange finish.
Government emissions regulations demanded that the 1971 LT1 engines would have lower compression than the previous year. GM wanted to meet the 91-octane fuel requirement for phasing out leaded fuels, so the LT1 dropped to 330 horsepower. But with the lightweight re-designed Stingray fiberglass body, the car still had power to spare.
We know that 14,680 Corvette coupes were built in 1971, and that 7,121 convertibles were made that year. But no record was kept to record how many of the convertibles were LT1’s, although Chevrolet did record that 1,949 Corvette LT1’s were produced, both coupes and convertibles. By estimate, many have decided that 650 would be the appropriate number of LT1 convertibles produced by figuring the percentage of coupes to convertibles in total production. But it is likely lower than that because coupes were in higher demand that year as the T-tops were just becoming popular on coupes in 1971.
So the exact numbers may remain a mystery, but it is for sure that the LT1 marked a new era in Corvette performance. This is an historic car with massive interest among Corvette collectors.

Classic Car News This Week
Big GAA Auction
We hope you were able to follow the GAA Classic Auction during this past weekend. It was an historic event with so many top museum quality cars crossing the auction stage at “The Palace” in Greensboro, North Carolina. The top sale was this 1967 Mustang GT500E Eleanor style restomod, a throwback to the Gone in 60 Seconds movie. The Eleanor recreations have become a collector trend all their own in the hobby. This one sold for $198,000. For a quick review of the auction you may want to read the report by eClassicAutos.com today. The special GAA Classic Cars auction happened last weekend, April 25-27, 2024, featuring 550 cars mostly from three No Reserve Collections. The Pre-War No Reserve cars were especially interesting because it included vintage and antique cars you don’t see at auctions ever. The next GAA Auction will happen this summer, July 25-27. We’ll keep you informed.

AEB Braking Mandates
The Federal Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) new mandate on Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems will require all manufacturers of passenger vehicles and light trucks to equip new vehicles with automatic emergency braking systems by mid-way through 2029, it was reported this week. That will effect cars and trucks manufactured for the 2030 model year. The NHTSA says the new rule will save 360 lives annually. Oddly, traffic deaths went up during the COVID-19 lockdown period. This new NHTSA rule was invoked because of that increase. The NHTSA acted on directive from Congress to establish standards for AEB systems using sensors, cameras and radar to pinpoint when an object ahead might collide with a vehicle. The system would automatically apply the braking system to slow or stop the car. The new rule would make AEB standard on cars and light trucks. Most importantly, the sensors must be able to detect pedestrians both in daylight and at night. The number of pedestrians killed in 2022 was 7,522, the highest number since 1981. Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, Toyota, Subaru and Nissan already meet these rquirements. Ford has up to 78 percent of their vehicles already meeting the rule. All auto manufacturers agreed to have some form of emergency braking alerts in their vehicles by 2022. But these new rules are more stringent and require vehicles to apply actual AEB at up to 90 miles per hour.

1970 Yenko Deuce
A real deal 1970 Yenko Deuce Nova was listed by Streetside Classics in Fort Worth, Texas. It is a Sunflower Yellow Yenko, one of only ten produced in that color. And, yes, it is in the Yenko Registry and has been documented. With the revered 350 LT1 high horsepower motor, it is one of the most sought after cars on the planet. In 1970 the LT1 was rated at 370 horsepower, but many think it was actually more like 400 horsepower. It was that powerful. It had the solid lifter cam with 11:1 compression. Handling all the power is a Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission. It has the GM 12-bolt rear end with 4.10 gears. Can you say burnouts? They say it was restored using all GM parts.
1957 Ford Thunderbird
If you have read any of our recent newsletters, you know that Reina International Auto in Brookfield, Wisconsin is liquidating all the cars in a local museum. When the founder passed the investors decided to liquidate their investments. This creates a great opportunity to acquire some interesting collector cars. For instance, here is a 1957 Ford Thunderbird, a rare E Code classic Thunderbird, in Gunmetal Gray with a white auxiliary hardtop. It has the Y block 312 ci V8 with 2 4-barrel E Code carburetors. All the power hooks up to a 3-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission. The interior is Ivory leather. It is a great example of the kind of cars available for sale now. A small group of Hudson collectors regularly monitors the Cars-On-Line website to spot classic Hudson cars and trucks as they are posted for sale here. Today is one of those days. Here is a 1947 Hudson Big Boy Pickup which has surfaced in the for sale market. It is often referred to as a Super Six Pickup because it has an original Hudson Super Six cylinder engine. It runs and drives exactly the way an original Super Six pickup should, says North Shore Classics, the Illinois broker that is selling it for its Colorado owner. They have this coveted Hudson pickup for sale at a very affordable price. They claim it is the “nicest example in existence.” You will see that it is highly detailed in the photos. 1929 Ford Tudor

This one was one they were working on when the husband passed away. He was known for his prowess in building a hot rod the right way. You can tell from the photos that the frame on this ’29 was a work of art as hot rods go. But, now the wife needs to sell this cherished project. In the photos you can see the parts they accumulated to build this one. Now it needs someone to assemble it. There is a lot of value in this offering.

Muscle Car Clones
1964 Plymouth Savoy
Nothing reminds you of “old school” drag racing like a 1964 Plymouth Savoy with a Max Wedge. This B Body example was built at the Los Angeles plant. The 8 ¾ rear end was powder coated and has Sure Grip, Mopar Super Stock leaf springs, Max Wedge rated rear shocks, 833 4-speed with a trunnion yoke and overdrive 4th gear. In other words, it was done right.

1950 Studebaker Champion
A private party seller from Indiana has listed his 1950 Studebaker Champion W5 Regal Deluxe 4-Door car for sale. He says it has its original numbers matching 6 cylinder engine with a 3-speed and overdrive. It has very slick paint and nice chrome, and it runs and drives and stops great. This car has no rust, according to the seller. You can see the photo of the interior with the suicide style rear door open. The interior looks clean. The engine compartment looks original and clean as will. Have our Cars-On-Line pre-purchase inspection service look at this one before you buy. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. 1955 Plymouth Belvedere
This week Country Classic Cars out of Staunton, Illinois has posted a 1955 Plymouth Belvedere for sale. This one is a classic custom restoration which was done some time ago. The 2-door car was made into a “hot rod” mild custom. The interior was redone during the restoration and it now has leather seats. Under the hood is a small block Chevy 350 ci V8 with an automatic transmission. The car has power brakes. They say it runs and drives out very well. Here is a walk-around video to show you more of the detail. When you inspect it you will find it idles smooth as glass. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday next week. Their asking price is only $13,500.
1965 Studebaker Cruiser
Here’s one you don’t see very often. This is a 1965 Studebaker Cruiser, a variant of the original Studebaker Lark family. After 1964 the Lark name was phased out, and the Cruiser, Commander and Daytona names replaced it. It was all part of Studebaker’s move to compact economy car production. Industrial designer Brook Stevens (founder of Excalibur) redesigned the Cruiser. This one has a 350 V8 engine with a 4-speed automatic transmission. It is being offered for sale at Streetside Classics in Phoenix, Arizona. The rare collector car will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday next week. Their asking price is $14,995.
1980 Corvette
Of all the renditions of Stingray Corvettes, the 1980 Corvette may be one of the most beautiful, and the one most people recognize as the “Stingray look.” This white 1980 Corvette Coupe with the dark tinted T-top is a stunning example. You may be surprised to learn that it is a “barn find” car, out of long term ownership. It comes with a partial tank sticker. It is being offered for sale through Fast Lane Classic Cars in St Charles, Missouri. It has the 350 ci V8 with a 3-speed automatic transmission. Note the blue leather interior. Although it runs and drives, Fast Lane considers it a project car at this point. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday next week. Their asking price is $12,995.
1987 Pontiac Fiero GT
Diminutive as it was, the Pontiac Fiero GT delivered a thrilling driving experience. You sat low and had the shifter lever at your shoulder level much like a Formula One race car. Here is a 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT which is being offered for sale by Streetside Classics in Tampa, Florida. In its history it has had only two Florida owners. The space age look and stance is enhanced by 15″ Fiero GT wheels encased in 215/60R15 tires. The 2.8 Liter V6 engine paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission delivers smooth acceleration and capable handling. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. Their asking price is $16,995.
2001 Jaguar XKR
A good car builder and restorer from back in the day has come across this 2001 Jaguar XKR for sale in Florida. He says the beautiful garage kept Jaguar sports car is like driving a brand new car. With all maintenance up to date, this is the XKR coupe you want to check out. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $13,500.
