Monster Powered 427
If one pulled up next to you, you wouldn’t know what it was. No badging, no emblems to designate the big block 427 under the hood. The COPO 427 Chevelle was a monster of a car gift wrapped from the factory for the race track. Now if you know the full story you realize that GM didn’t know they were producing drag racing cars right from the factory. The COPO (Central Office Production Order) system became the tool for clever Chevrolet dealers in the know to order a performance 427 ci V8 right from the factory. Since GM had a ban on using the big block 427 engine in anything but full sized sedans, the COPO ordering system became the way Vince Piggins, Chevrolet’s chief of Product Promotions, was able to teach certain Chevy dealers how to order a Camaro, Chevelle or Nova to be delivered with the banned big block 427 in the engine compartment.
Fast forward to today and those COPO Chevelles that were produced by Chevrolet are now worth up to a quarter of a million dollars apiece. Chevrolet only made 323 COPO Chevelles. A full 99 of them went to Don Yenko’s Chevrolet dealership in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. These cars had only one purpose … to go fast at the race track.
Just this week a real deal 1969 Chevelle COPO 427 was listed for sale in the popular Cars-On-Line Chevelle Section. Of course, you have to know the pedigree of the car in order to put a value on it. This one has been certified as original by Ed Cunneen of the COPO Connection. He says it was sold new at the Scuncio Chevrolet dealership in Greenville, Rhode Island. A partial build sheet remains to identify the VIN and key ordering options such as power disc brakes, bucket seats, sport striping, sports steering wheel center console, tinted glass and rear window defroster along with KQ coded rear axle. They say there are only 130 miles on the car since the restoration.
This car has been restored to its original factory specifications. It is seen here in its original color of Fathom Green with a parchment interior. You will note that the original engine is not in the car. That puts this COPO Chevelle at a much better price point than most. Power comes from a period correct 427 paired to a Muncie 4-speed. The sale of this car will include NOS Scuncio floor mat protectors, NOS Scuncio dealer emblem, original build sheet, a COPO Connection certificate and the NCRS shipping data report.

Classic Car News This Week
Spring Carlisle Auction
If you’ve been watching our X (Twitter) page today you may have noticed that the Spring Carlisle Auction is live streaming now on YouTube. Click here to watch with us. The auction is a big part of the Spring Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet underway this week at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. If you haven’t been to the Carlisle event it is one of the top shows in the country, eagerly anticipated by collectors throughout the mid-Atlantic states. We are watching to find out if prices are going up or down in the collector car market this year. Every auction tells a story. It looks like imported sports cars are a “thing” this years based on what is happening at Carlisle. What do you think?
Studebaker Appraisal
When a Wisconsin collector wanted to know how much his 1950 Studebaker Champion Convertible was worth, he filled out our online form to have a pre-purchase inspection done on the vehicle. His purpose was to get it ready to sell, and he wanted to know what the value would be. Because it had some filler in the body and the finish had some chips and scratches, this car appraised out at a Class Three rating (the category where most vehicles fall into.) The filler was found in the usual places on these Studebakers. Overall the body was in good shape with no rust, and the driver quality repaint was a good match for the original Tulip Cream factory color. In its current condition it is a driver quality car, but a very rare one. It would be worth a full restoration. You can read the report to find out what we placed the value at.
It is a great idea to have your car appraised before you put it up for sale. We can help. Read some of our sample pre-purchase inspections at the Inspections Page today. Once you have it inspected, you can have us link the inspection report right in your ad description. That would ease the anxiety of any potential buyer.
This Weeks Featured Stories
2023 Koenigsegg Gemera
It is pretty well established in today’s market that the Koenigsegg is the epitome of an exotic super car. The Koenigsegg brand, starting in the 1990’s, is thought of as one of the most exclusive and expensive super car makers in the world. Now in their 24th year they have produced a four-seater hybrid hyper car that reimagines their brand. Only 300 examples of this 2023 Koenigsegg Gemera were produced in its first year. This rare example has been listed for sale by Exclusive Automotive Group in Washington, DC. They are one of the few Koenigsegg dealers in the country. As a plug-in hybrid, the Gemera uses advanced technology to power the TFG engine to the front wheels and three electric motors. It is said to be 20 percent more fuel efficient than a four-cylinder engine. They say the price tag needs seven digits.
1963 Z-11 Impala
This is probably the rarest muscle car to have been listed this year. Well known among lightweight race car fans, this 1963 Chevrolet Impala Z-11 has been photographed at major shows around the country. It is pictured here in the livery of Sox Sinclair because legendary drag racer Ronnie Sox owned and raced the car. It was also raced by Larry Wilson and Jack May. As you know, the Z-11’s were purpose built for racing from the factory. The Super Stock lightweight aluminum front ends are legendary. But the Z-11 427 motor is what makes this car so amazing. The RPO Z-11 427 engine was the fastest engine produced up to that time. Only 57 Z-11 Impalas were produced that year. They say only 20 have survived. This car is one of the top three known to exist. And now it is for sale.
’32 Model B 400 Convertible
The 1932 Ford Model B 400 Convertible is one of the most desirable early Ford V8’s in the collector car hobby. Most of these cars were exported to overseas markets for upscale buyers. Sales were poor so not many were produced, making them very exclusive and desirable to today’s car collectors. This 1932 Ford Model B 400 Convertible Sedan is a spectacular restoration done with many handmade parts and updated conveniences. It is being offered for sale by the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. With only 275 miles since the redo, this ’32 leaves no nut or bolt untouched. It features restyled Corvette seats and a back-up camera. You may remember when it was featured in the May 2021 issue of Modern Rodder magazine. They say it was also on the Classic Instruments calendar in 2022. It has a nice old school look, but when you open the door you are greated by a Bordeau Red leather interior. Under the hood you have a 383 ci stroker engine with eight throttle bodies and velocity stacks. The transmission is a 700R4 spinning a Ford 9” rear end.

Collector Cars with Low Miles
1967 Camaro
As classic Camaros go, this one is spectacular because it has low miles and is a documented “survivor.” We consider a collector car as a survivor when it is completely original. It is even better when it comes with documentation. So here is a 1967 Camaro with only 35,927 original miles. The Granada Gold 327 Camaro remains remarkably straight with all original body panels. The car is being offered for sale through WeBe Autos in New York. You can click here to view a walk-around video and hear it run.
Here are more recent Low Miles additions:
1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass, Coyote Classics, IA, 39k original miles
1985 Corvette Coupe, USA Hot Cars, CA, 20,108 miles
1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III, Classic Auto Mall, PA, 54k actual miles
You’ll find these and hundreds more in our Low Miles Section online now.
Project Vehicles for Restoration
1968 Porsche 912
Gullwing Motor Cars out of Astoria, New York has listed a good original 1968 Porsche 912 sports car for sale, one of the original air cooled variety Porsche sports cars at a bargain price. The black on black Porsche is said to be in restorable condition and “well worth the minimal effort required” to restore it. It is not currently running and has rust, however. These 912’s are pretty rare to find today, so it might be one that will increase in value. Gullwing says it is a “superb value” at its current price.

Deals of the Day
1956 Studebaker Power Hawk
There are some hidden gems in the Cars-On-Line listings if you just look for them. For instance, a 1956 Studebaker Power Hawk, a one-year only production, has been available in our listings for some time now. I think it was overlooked and now emerges as a very desirable find. This rare Power Hawk was listed by a private party seller out of Pennsylvania. He describes it as a “ten-footer” meaning it could use a paint job and some TLC. But he says it runs and sounds great. It shows 84k miles and he thinks that is original. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because the asking price is only $10,000.
1956 Pontiac Chieftain
You will be surprised at the quality of this 1956 Pontiac Chieftain 4-Door Hardtop when compared to its price. It is being offered for sale at Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. You should have it inspected to be sure. You can see in the photos that the two tone blue and white exterior matches the interior colors. The V8 engine is mated to an automatic transmission, plus it has dual exhaust. Click here to review a video production courtesy of Country Classic Cars. They say it drives out well and is coming out of the Mullholland Collection. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday because their asking price is only $21,800.
1953 Ford Customline
Country Classic Cars also has this 1953 Ford Customline 4-Door Sedan for sale this week. It is powered by a Flathead engine with Offenhauser dual carb intake, an old school hot rod setup. They say it drives out well and sits on its 16-inch American Torque Thrust wheels. The body looks pretty solid. You should have it inspected before you buy, however, because you can notice in the photos the pitting and tarnish on the chrome and stainless. Click here to review a walk-around video and here it run. This might make the perfect project to restore or to make into a restomod. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is only $16,750.
1983 Datsun 280ZX
There are a number of these Datsun Z sports cars available on the market these days. They have been very popular among Gen-X buyers in recent years. This 1983 Datsun 280ZX is looking very sharp in the photos. It is also being offered for sale at Country Classic Cars in Illlinois. (They are having a big week again.) Revisions were made to the 280ZX in 1982 which made it a more luxury oriented sports car instead of a stiff race car. Dressed in all red with black trim accents, the imported icon is powered by an L28E, the upsized 2,753 cc (2.8 L; 168.0 cu in) inline 6-cylinder engine mated to a proper 5-speed manual gearbox. Be sure to click here to review a walk-around video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. The asking price is $14,450.
1981 VW Vanagon
Another hot trend in the collector market in recent years is the re-emergence of the van culture. Thanks to the Gen-X generation there is a lot of interest in classic Volkswagon vans, especially the camper type vans. They represent an active lifestyle for young families to enjoy. So here is a 1981 VW Vanagon, which was an inexpensive way to enjoy traveling back in the day. It is being offered for sale at Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. From the owner’s manual and maintenance book to the clean CARFAX report that showcases its history in the sunny state of California, this vehicle is an interesting find. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. Their asking price is $19,950.
1986 Pontiac Fiero GT
Here is a real sharp looking 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT which is being offered for sale at Hanksters Hot Rods in their Florida showroom. They say the 50,049 miles recorded on the odometer are original. This is a 2.8L V6 GT with a 4-speed manual transmission. They say it comes with a clean Carfax, air conditioning, electric cooling fan with OEM radiator, power disc brakes at all fours anda lot of OEM replacement parts. Click here to review a walk-around video and see the car up close. We classify these Fiero GT’s as “future collectibles.” The clean GT will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. Their asking price is $19,990.
