The Machine

1970 AMC Rebel Machine

The diminutive American Motors Corporation was determined to build muscle cars like the Big Three back in the muscle car era. By 1970 they came out with a car which they simply called The Machine. It was based on their AMC Rebel platform. This was AMC’s finest achievement, a red, white and blue two-door hardtop known as the Rebel Machine.

The rare 1970 AMC Rebel “The Machine” which you see here is one of the featured cars for the upcoming Spring Carlisle Auction in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, April 18-19, 2024. It is one of only 2,326 Rebel Machines ever built by AMC. They only produced The Machine in 1970. It has the 390 ci V8 with 340 horsepower from the factory. It has the Y Code engine only used for the Rebel Machine, and it comes with the T-10 close ratio 4-speed transmission and the Twingrip rear differential. The performance features benefitted from a heavy duty suspension package. You will note the factory air induction hood with tach. This one has a Hurst floor shifter and factory optional headers.

The Rebel Machine’s 390 ci V8 put 340 horsepower to the ground providing an impressive 430 foot pounds of torque. Like the AMX, the 390 was tweaked with high-flow dual-plane intake, dog-leg port heads and larger exhaust manifolds. It was the fastest car AMC ever produced. Super Stock and Drag Illustrated magazine reported a quarter-mile time of 14.40 at 100 miles per hour.

The red, white and blue phenom will be auctioned off to the highest bidder at the Carlisle Events auction during the Spring Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet later this month. Muscle car collectors will be licking their chops to get a chance to own this one. These cars do not come up for sale very often.

Classic Car News This Week

GAA Classic Auction

The GAA Classic Auction company has announced a special No Reserve auction with several important collections to be liquidated this month, April 25-27, 2024. Exceptionally rare classic and antique cars will be sold out of the Pre-War No Reserve Collection. This 1932 Cadillac 355B Standard Sedan is one of the many featured cars out of that collection. This stunning classic Cadillac will also be sold at No Reserve. They say the engine has been rebuilt and it has a fresh fuel pump. It is eligible for all Classic Car Club of America events and CARavans. Click here to review more of the cars from the No Reserve collections to be sold by GAA Classics.

AMX Pre-Purchase Inspection

When a New Jersey buyer asked us to inspect a classic 1970 AMC AMX muscle car for him in Wisconsin his concern was about which condition class to peg it in. The car was a “barn find” so he wanted to know where “the rust and rot was.” Was it a low Number 3 Condition Class that runs and drives but needs some cosmetic work short of a full restoration? Or was it a low Number 4 Condition Class that needs a lot of panel replacement and structural repair? There was a lot to consider as there always is in the pursuit of a “barn find.” The inspector seemed to be overall impressed with the body panels and structural integrity of the AMX. There were some troublesome discoveries along the way, mostly little things like the window regulators and horn not working. You can read the entire report here.

The first item on a buyer’s “To Do” list should be to contact the Cars-On-Line Inspection Service. Buying a collector car is much different than buying a new or used late model car. It is always a “buyer beware” type of sale. With a network of inspectors all over the U.S. and Canada, your first line of protection in any sale is a COL Collector Car Inspection. Learn more about collector car inspections when you read our COL Inspection Referral Service page.

1969 Trans Am

Another really rare muscle car is this 1969 Pontiac Trans Am which was just posted by MS Classic Cars. Marc Schiliro will have this car at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Palm Beach, Florida, April 18-20, 2024. He wanted to promote the sale here. These first year Trans Ams are so rare, only 697 were ever produced by Pontiac that first year. And only 43 of those came with a black interior as this one. It has undergone a meticulous rotisserie restoration which was completed in 2020. The car’s authenticity was verified by Pontiac expert Jim Mattison last month. It has the 4-speed manual transmission. Click here to review a detailed walk-around video. This is an historically important classic muscle car.

Last of the Woody Wagons

Woody wagons are an Americana phenomena that captured the car culture psyche back in the day. Today there is a collector subculture of woody wagon owners who treasure cars such as this one just posted for sale at the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. This is a 1948 Pontiac Streamliner 8 Silver Streak Woody Wagon. Remember that 1948 was the last year that Pontiac made a true wood bodied wagon. They tell us this Pontiac Streamliner has benefitted from an earlier resoration. Although the exterior shows a charming patina, the interior is all original, and the wood crafting will draw you inside. What is even more exciting is that the price is way below six figures. Because it is more of a driver quality classic car you can get it for almost half of what you would pay for a No. 2 condition car. Woody wagons are a lifestyle as much as they are a mode of transportation. Join the club.

Hemi Charger R/T

As usual, REV Muscle Cars has just listed a bevy of beautiful Mopar muscle cars that will get the attention of Mopar collectors worldwide. For instance, here is a 1968 Dodge Hemi Charger R/T. Dodge only made 475 of these that year. Only 264 had an automatic transmission as this one. It was ordered through the military with options hand chosen by its first owner. It comes with rare Burgundy metallic paint with a black vinyl roof and white deluxe interior, power steering, power disc brakes, tinted glass and an AM stereo radio with 8-track. Click here to watch a walk-around video and hear it run. The numbers were inspected by Mopar historian Galen Govier. The body was dipped during restoration. There are only 500 miles on the car since the restoration.

Auctions

In two weeks the Spring Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet will be held in historic Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where George Washington often stayed after the American Revolution. It is one of the oldest and most respected collector car events in the country. One of the best parts of this great car show is the Spring Carlisle Auction at the Expo Center across from the fairgrounds. Here are a few of the vehicles they have just posted on our website to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

1967 Pontiac GTO

The 1967 Pontiac GTO Convertible you see here is one of the featured offerings during the upcoming Spring Carlisle Auction, April 18-19, 2024. This is a numbers matching car with PHS paperwork. But under the hood is a desirable ccustom built Butler Performance motor with a 462 roller motor complete with all the documentation and dyno sheets. There are only 1,000 miles on the engine. The Edelbrock Performer intake was added and it has an Edelbrock 850 cfm carburetor with electric fuel pumps and a cutoff switch. The origiinal intake and carburetor are in the trunk. Read all about the performance extras in the ad copy at the link.

1932 Desoto Sedan

You will look long and hard to find another one of these. This is a 1932 Desoto Sedan with a dual cowl and wood wheels. The gangsta’ era car is shown with fender mounted spares and show chrome. It will be sold to the highest bidder in two weeks when the Spring Carlisle Auction will be held at the Carlisle Fairground Expo Center, April 18-19, 2024. They tell us this car has no rust and it has been repainted only once. It has a driver quality interior and engine compartment. This one may be the ride you have been looking for. Click here to find out how to bid.

1971 GMC Sprint

The GMC Sprint was to GMC as the El Camino was to Chevrolet. Only a 1971 GMC Sprint such as the one you see here is much more rare. This car/truck rates a muscle car status as it has the matching numbers CGC Code 350 ci V8 and matching original TH350 Turbo 3-speed automatic transmission. They say it also has the correct 10-bolt rear end and comes with factory air conditioning. To top it off, this one has dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. Notice the chrome wire wheels with B.F. Goodrich radial T/As and white letter tires. They say it is in very good running condition. It will be offered for sale to the highest bidder at the Spring Carlisle Auction.

Price Reduced

1959 Corvette

This Roman red 1959 Corvette got a “haircut” this week. And as haircuts go this was a buzz cut. The classic Corvette looks beautiful in the photos, and as the private party seller tells it, it was restored to perfection. He says it is numbers matching with all guages working. Look at the photos of the undercarriage. You could eat off it. When he listed this Corvette originally he was asking $120,000. But just this week he dropped the price to $105,000.

Deals of the Day

1964 Ford Fairlane 500

The custom mods may not be of everybody, but this 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 sure has them. Finished in Vintage Burgundy with a Wimbeldon White roof, this classic car will turn heads wherever it goes. It is being offere for sale this week through Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. They say it has all the extras, including V8 with 4-barrel carburetor, dual exhaust, hood pins, rear fender skirts, chrome bumpers, bench seats and Fairlane 500 fender badges. It came off the assembly line in San Jose, California. Be sure to look through all the photos. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because the asking price is only $10,750.

1956 Dodge Royal Lancer

A 1956 Dodge Royal Lancer 2-Door Hardtop was just posted for sale at Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. You will need to move fast to get a chance at this one. They tell us the exterior is stunning and finished in a tri-color pattern of red, black and white. They say the chrome is in excellent condition and the rear view shots are a photographer’s dream come true. But look at the interior shots … equally impressive. Click here to watch a detailed walk-around video and hear it run. Power comes from a 360 V8 engine updated with an Edelbrock carburetor and Cyclone intake. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. Their asking price is $22,200.

1951 Chevy Styleline

Okay, sure, the color is not for everyone. But wait till you hear the price. This is a 1951 Chevrolet Styleline classic sedan that has been tastefully modified. Women love it. It is also being offered for sale at Country Classic Cars in Illinois. They tell us it is in excellent overall condition and drives very well. Although it currently has the original inline 6 cylinder engine with a manual 3-speed on the column, it is an excellent candidate for a V8 swap. Click here to review a walk-around video. (You might want to put on sun glasses first, though.) It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is only $16,200.

1971 Porsche 914 Slant Nose

Here is an interesting custom 1971 Porsche 914 which has been given the look and feel of a Slant Nose 911 Widebody. Finished in Petrol Blue metallic paint, it has a custom fiberglass body kit with widened fenders, louvered sail panels, side skirts, 911 type rear bumper and a Slant Nose style front valance. The bodywork is unique and nicely done. The interior is serviceable enough for a driver quality car. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. I think you will agree that this is a lotta’ car for the money. They are asking $12,750.

1995 Chrysler Lebaron GTC

A nice low miles edition 1995 Chrysler Lebaron GTC Convertible is being offered for sale at Cody’s Classic Cars for a very low price. They say it has just 62k miles and loaded. The power convertible top and power windows all work, and the tires are said to be “like new.” It is rust free and runs and drives excellent, they tell us. Being for sale, it has been detailed inside and out. As the story goes, a collector owned this car and treated it like a classic. The best part is that this “summer cruiser” won’t break the bank. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is only $4,900.

2000 Corvette Coupe

In showroom condition, this 2000 Corvette Coupe is a one owner car with low miles. It is being offered for sale by Classic Car Marketing in Southern California. The color combination of red with a red interior is super rare. The 350 ci V8 engine has been performance modified and backed by an automatic transmission. It comes with a removeable targa top, dual exhaust, power four wheel disc brakes and Magnesium wheels. The inside is loaded including cold air. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. Their asking price is $18,500.

2001 BMW Z3

The iconic look for the early BMW Z3’s was Atlanta Blue with a tan canvass top. The little roadster made a big splash when it was first introduced in 1996. But by the time this 2001 BMW Z3 was produced it was in its final year of production making it a great collector car to buy. The Z3 is being offered for sale by Streetside Classics in Phoenix. It has a 2.5L 4 cylinder with a 4-speed automatic transmission. They record 55,796 actual miles. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $14,995.
