Shelby 427 Street Cobra

Survivor From a Barn Find

One of the most sought after collector cars of all time is the Shelby 427 Cobra. There is a reason why it is the most replicated car in the collector car hobby. The 427 Cobra is as rare as they are iconic. The history of the Shelby 427 Cobra is storied and their potential as race cars was never tested in the FIA championship competition for which they were designed. Nevertheless, their prowess and power have made them the most desirable “dream cars” on the planet.

Legendary Motorcar Company has a survivor 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra street version for sale in their inventory. With only 18,000 miles from new, this survivor is said to be the most original example of a 427 Cobra in existence. They say it has its original paint, interior, chassis, engine and mechanical components. “It still retains many features that are often lost to time or restoration,” Legendary noted in their description. The chassis number is hand-etched on its original Shelby American foot-box tag, frame stamp, hood, doors, trunk latch and the transmission tunnel. It would be hard to find another in this type of original condition.

Throughout the 1960’s Carroll Shelby and Enzo Ferrari were locked in competition for world class racing domination. Shelby was preparing a special version of his Shelby Cobras for the 1965 FIA Championship competition. He and his trusted mechanic Ken Miles were preparing a big block 427 side oiler engine to run in a modified Cobra chassis with coil springs on all four corners of the Cobra. Unfortunately, Shelby was not able to build enough Shelby 427 Cobras to homologate it for FIA competition in 1965. And with Shelby getting involved with the GT40 program for Ford, it so happened that the 427 Cobra never competed in FIA. So only 316 427 Cobras were ever produced between 1965 to 1967. Records show that 19 were built for FIA competition, while 31 were built for Semi Competition (S/C Cobras) and 160 were built for street use. The 427 Cobra you see here is one of them.

It is rare that a 427 Cobra has never been modified or restored. The red paint and black interior are still a testament to the way these cars came from Shelby American. It is documented in the Shelby American Registry. When judged in Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) competition it was awarded SAAC Gold in the Survivor Class.

A 427 Cobra could go from zero to 60 mph in about 4.3 seconds. What would it have been like if they could have been entered in FIA races in 1965? Likely, they would have dominated in an historic fashion. Ironically, we will never know. But it just adds to their legendary story. This car preserves that provenance and will remain the sole example of how a 427 Cobra came from the factory.

Amelia Island Concours

Congratulations to the Best of Show winners at last weekend’s Amelia Island Concours. The Best of Show Concours de Sport was a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO owned by David MacNeil of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. MacNeil is the owner and CEO of WeatherTech. The coveted Best of Show Concours d’Elegance and the Concours De Sport are two of the highest honors that an owner can achieve in the collector car world. We hope you were able to read our reports from the Amelia Island Concours. You can find photos of concours class winners, plus videos of the event in our ClassiCarNews blog.

Ridler Award Winner

The Ridler Award Winner for 2024 was announced at the Detroit Autorama this past weekend. The winner was a 1953 Corvette Custom called “TwelveAir” built by Kindig-It Design for owners Dave and Tracey Maxwell. Dave Kindig, a reality TV show personality and custom car builder was on hand for the awards ceremony. Kindig said the build was a tribute to the first-year 1953 Corvette as featured in the GM Motorama traveling auto show in the early 1950’s. The body was all hand formed out of aluminum. The Ridler Award is the most coveted award in the collector car hobby.

Mustang T5 Fastback

Did you know that in Germany the name Mustang was used by a German truck company. So when Ford wanted to sell Mustangs in Germany they had to change the name. Ford used the original project name for the Mustang which was T5. So if you bought a Ford Mustang in Germany they came with no identifying trim and were called a Ford T5. American military personnel could buy the Ford T5 through the military PX system, and when their tour was completed Uncle Sam would ship it back home for them. So there are some of the Mustang T5’s still here in the U.S., all of them very collectible. This week Old Town Automobile has a 1965 Mustang T5 Fastback for sale. In its original Wimbeldon White paint it has a straight rust-free body and floors. They tell us it runs smooth with its 289 V8 and 4-barrel carburetor, dual exhaust and factory disc brakes. It has a Rally pack tach and clock. This collector Mustang is ready to drive and enjoy.

Video Ads

1967 Chevelle SS

Hanksters Hot Rods of Daytona has a video ad this week on their 1967 Chevelle SS. The big block under the hood is a bit of a surprise. They packed a 454 in there .. nicely done. You will see from the photos that the panel fitment and body is real nice. In the video you get a chance to view the paint and clear, and assess the finish. (Click the video window above to view.) Then they put the car up on a lift and show you the clean undercarriage and floor pans. I think you’ll agree that this is the car you’ve been looking for.

Project Vehicles for Restoration

1932 Chevrolet Delivery

From the hallowed halls of the big Classic Auto Mall in Pennsylvania comes a very interesting project for restoration. This 1932 Chevrolet ½-Ton Sedan Delivery came from a market in Brooklin, Maine where it was purchased new and used there to deliver until 1958. Then it was tucked away for 65 years. Rust and rot is evident. This one will need a lot of work, but would be well worth the effort because of its historic significance. And, yes, it would make a great start for a street rod.

The following are just some of the cars available in the Project Car Section this week:

1951 Ford F3 Truck, Classic Auto Mall, PA

1966 Dodge Charger, Country Classic Cars, IL

It has always been kept in heated storage. He was asking $122,500 for the car. But just this week he reduced the price to $105,000. Spring is coming.
