Race Bred Challenger
The Dodge Challenger T/A and its cousin, the Plymouth AAR Cuda, were born of the same era in Mopar racing history. The T/A and AAR Cuda were purpose built from the factory to compete with the Pony cars in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Trans Am racing series. Thus the reason why the T/A Challenger had the super quick 340 ci V8 engine producing 345-ft-lb of Torque. The 0 to 60 times were around 5.9 seconds. The significance of the T/A’s and AAR Cudas was that they could handle curves as well as straight line tracks where other big block Mopars were known to run.
The T/A came with its trademark hood scoop adorning the pinned matte black fiberglass hood, ducktail rear spoiler and dual side exhaust. You would not mistake this car for your grandfathers old Dodge. They only made 2,399 T/A’s from the factory, so it was a limited edition even back in the day. It had a starting price of $4,000. Because of the excessive expense to produce these special built race cars, Chrysler dropped the program after one year. Thus, these Mopar Pony cars are in high demand among Mopar collectors today.
A 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A became available for sale at Fast Lane Classic Cars in St Charles, Missouri. It has the very popular Go Mango Mopar orange finish with a black vinyl interior. They tell us it is numbers matching with the legendary Six Pack, 3 2-barrel carburetors, thought of as hot rod technology for that era. It has the numbers matching 3-speed automatic transmission and 8 3/4” rear end with 3.55:1 gears and Sure Grip.
This particular Go Mango T/A Challenger is listed in the Galen Govier Registry as #241 out of 1008. It was the cover car for Muscle Car Classics magazine in October of 1990.
In recent years we are seeing fewer and fewer of the Challenger T/A’s and the AAR Cudas being offered for sale. Prices have gone up in recent years. Whereas in 2018 you could pick one up in No. 2 condition for about $70,000, this year the average price at recent auctions has been $104,500. Last year we saw a couple of very special T/A’s with provenance sell for over $200,000. We think these cars will continue to go up in price.

Classic Car News This Week
Golden Anniversary Chevrolet
One of the great mysteries of our time is being remembered by a very special tribute car. Some of you may remember when GM celebrated their 50 Millionth car produced. That happened in 1955. With much fanfare and a huge celebration, GM had a downtown Detroit parade showing off a 1955 Golden Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe (hardtop) designated as the company’s 50 Millionth car to come off the production line. The car was brilliantly trimmed in 24-carat gold plating for its chrome and stainless, and finished in gold paint. The car was then displayed at the convention hall while a dinner was held for Detroit dignitaries. But, somehow, after that display, the car went missing and was forgotten. No one knows where it went and it remains a mystery to historians today.
Since no one can find the real car, a group of Tri-Five collectors has taken it upon themselves to recreate the 1955 Golden Anniversary Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe. The story of this historic build is chronicled in a fresh report written by eClassicAutos.com. Click here to read “the rest of the story” and view photos.
Electric Vehicle Surplus
Just when it looked like Electric Vehicle (EV) sales were taking off, sales dropped at the end of 2023. Car dealers are now screaming that they are losing money trying to reduce inventories on EVs. Ford, meanwhile, has switched its strategy, dumping EVs to produce more hybrids which are selling at a record pace. EV is a term used to represent new vehicles that operate totally on electric by battery power alone. Once the Federal government dropped the subsidy on buying electric vehicles new EV sales tanked. EVs are greatly restricted by the range of the battery. Hybrids can run on gas or electric and have a much longer range before you need a recharge. Hertz Corporation, which operates car rental services throughout the world, has decided to stop buying electric vehicles because they are losing money on their resale value. It seems that EVs are not selling well on the used car market because of the battery range problem. So the prices on pre-owned EV’s are plummeting. Used car dealers are finding they can’t sell the electric vehicles which are piling up in their inventories. Tesla and several Chinese electric vehicle makers are now in a price war further complicating the value of used electric vehicles. New reports say that EV prices have fallen 30 percent during the Fall period of 2023. In Europe the cost of EVs has escalated to the point where rental companies are no longer buying them. Until there is a new development in battery capacity, the used EV market has hit a brick wall.

1970 Chevelle SS
A 1970 Chevelle SS 396 was just listed by a private party seller in Canada. These big block Chevelles are the hottest thing in the collector car market right now. Classic car dealers have lists of buyers ready to buy them if they can get them in their inventory (and that has become increasingly difficult recently.) The Canadian seller says this is a real L34 classic Chevelle muscle car with an M20 4-speed and 12-bolt posi rear end. It was restored 20 years ago and still only has 62k original miles. He says it has all original body panels with no bodywork, and was just repainted. Have it inspected. He says the undercarriage is beautiful. We are seeing these cars sell fast, sometimes as soon as they are listed.

Deals of the Day
1969 El Camino
Once again this week Beverly Hills Car Club is dominating the DEAL of the DAY feature with their huge number of bargain priced vehicles. It is an “eye candy” car sale right here in the newsletter. This 1969 Chevrolet El Camino was posted for sale. They say this SS badged truck has a big block V8 engine, but they do not say that it is the original engine. Nor do they indicate that it was a real SS. You will have to find that out through your research. And we might as that you should have it inspected before you buy. That is always our recommendation whenever buying a classic car as a hobby car. That said, you will want to check this one out because it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $19,950.
1949 Chevy Coupe
Now here is one you don’t want to overlook. Country Classic Cars out of Staunton, Illinois listed this 1949 Chevy Coupe. We have to say that this looks like a real nice classic custom that takes a good picture. With dual spotlights, dual Lake pipe exhaust and shaved door handles, this is a cool little coupe. The body style lends itself to a radical custom look with the fastback style roofline. Nice sport appearance. The original ’49 coupe came with an independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes along with a 12-volt electrical system. Click here to view a walk-around video and here it run. Nice. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is reasonable at $20,500.
1969 Triumph Spitfire
We are noticing a lot more British two-seater sports cars on the market recently. This is a 1969 Triumph Spitfire Mark III Convertible that should be looked at closely. It takes a good picture, doesn’t it? The Jasmine Yellow sports car comes with a manual transmission, inline-four cylinder engine, Birmingham SU carburetors, single exhaust outlet, Jaeger instruments, black convertible soft top with a matching color boot cover, Tonneau cover, Tiger Paw white-line tires and Spitfire-branded hub caps. Have it inspected if you can’t go to see it in person. They say it comes with an owner’s manual, manufacturer’s literature and service receipts. They say this one is mechanically sound. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is $11,750
1987 Pontiac Fiero GT
Discontinued after 1988, the Pontiac Fiero is eminently collectible now. Here is a 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT with the 2.8 L V6 and a 5-speed manual transmission.
