Greatest Classic of All
If you were to ask automotive historians which cars would be on their Top 10 list of all time, the Mercedes-Benz 500 K Roadster would likely be at the top of those lists. For decades it has been considered the most sought after car among the true classic roadsters. It was with extreme reverence therefore that we noted the presence of a 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500 K Cabriolet A in our Mercedes-Benz Section this week. It was a surprise posting by Gullwing Motor Cars out of Astoria, New York.
Second only to Carroll Shelby’s little Cobra, the 500 K Mercedes roadster is the most often replicated car in automotive history. Brooks Stevens’ inspiration for his popular Excalibur neo-classic car was the Mercedes 500 K. Mercedes produced the historic roadster from 1934 until 1936. They believe 342 of the 500 K were produced. But only 116 of them were Cabriolet A’s with the shorter wheelbase. Of those only 33 were built by the factory’s Sindelfingen coachbuilding department. This one is chassis 105379, one of those 33 which were built at Sindelfingen. Gullwing tells us that there are only 11 of these examples known to still exist. They say this is the finest example in the world.
In the 1930’s the Mercedes-Benz 500 K was so advanced for its era that they had wide appeal among wealthy new car buyers. With a Roots supercharger (called a Kompressor, thus the “K”) they were said to produce 160 horsepower. They supported external exhaust pipes and were built on a frame that used fully independent wishbone suspensions.
The 500 K Cabriolet A you see here was originally commissioned by Baron Silfverschiold of Gasevadholm, Sweden, who took delivery in April 1935. His special order included left-hand-drive, gray paint and a blood-red pigskin leather interior. After changing hands several times it was restored in 1962-1963. When purchased by a German collector, it was again restored in the late 1980’s. Great care was taken to make sure it remained factory correct. Today it stands as a Classic Car Club of America recognized Full Classic. (Be sure to review all of the photos at the link here. You won’t see a car like this very often.) A vintage classic of this caliber comes along only once in a lifetime.

Classic Car News This Week
Rare Corvette L88’s
The Rally Red 1967 Corvette L88 Coupe which was offered for sale at the Mecum Auction at Kissimmee, Florida earlier this month was a sale of great interest to Corvette collectors. While it was on the auction block the L88 coupe was bid to $2.8 million. Although it did not sell immediately on the auction floor, Mecum later announced it had changed hands for an undisclosed amount. We assume something over the auction high bid. But we thought it would be worth stating how significant that sale was. They only produced 20 L88’s in 1967 making them one of the most valuable classic muscle cars in the car hobby. Our friends at eClassicAutos.com did a full feature story on the L88’s updating their statistics to include the recent ones sold at the historic Kissimmee sale in January. Click here to review the history of the L88’s and why they are so valuable.
Welcome A New Dealer
Girls, girls, girls … Our readers will be excited to welcome a fresh face on the Cars-On-Line website this week. Located in Ft Myers, Florida this collector car dealer is appropriately called Muscle Cars For Sale. It is a family run business with owner Tom King at the helm. They specialize in 1960’s and 1970’s American muscle cars with a peppering of other specialty cars thrown into the mix. For instance, this 1973 Camaro LT has an original block bored .030 over with a Melling M55 high volume oil pump, CAT 4340 connecting rods, Dart Iron heads 650 carb and Speed Pro Pistons. As you can see they like to go fast. And the young lady is not hard to look at either. Muscle Cars For Sale tends to embellish their photos with some eye candy. Us old guys may be on a diet but it doesn’t mean we can’t look at the menu, right? What we really like about the ads by Muscle Cars For Sale is that they include an interesting walk-around video with every ad. You won’t believe how well video ads sell cars. It really makes a difference. Click here to review all the fresh listings from Muscle Cars For Sale this week.
This Weeks Featured Stories
Grandpa Munster’s Drag-U-La
Ideal Classic Cars in Venice, Florida is home to a top collection of Celebrity and Movie Car replicas. Just this week they listed a replica of Grandpa Munster’s famous Drag-U-La race car. It replicates the pop culture phenomenon drag car made out of a coffin from the 1960’s hit TV show The Munsters. The description does not include who it was built by so you’ll have to call and find out. Some of the replicas were produced by the George Barris shop in California. Others were done by smaller customizers throughtout the country. This one looks pretty authentic in the photos. They say it has a 302 ci V8 Ford engine and C4 automatic transmission.
’57 Cameo Carrier
A private party seller from Katy, Texas just listed this 1957 Chevrolet Cameo Carrier Pickup truck for sale. With its unique original factory color combination of Ocean Green and Bombay Ivory, this truck looks super clean in the photos. Look how straight it looks. Those body panels look pristine. The seller says it is the product of a body-off restoration using the original frame with Posies Soft Ride 2 leaf slider front and rear springs. And, yes, it has rack n pinion steering. The reason it looks so sweet in the photos is that it only has 215 miles on it since the redo. They say it is a Best of Show winner. You can see why.
Lincoln Model K
An historic 1931 Lincoln Model K Phaeton was listed for sale this week by the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. They say the car was a barn find when the current owner discovered it and rebuilt the motor from parts. They say the engine now runs perfectly. But, alas, the car needs a significant amount of TLC to get it to where it can be shown. We point this one out because this is an historic car worth restoring. It will be the highlight of our Project Car Section this week because it is such a significant find. This one was a Model 201, likely built at the factory. But the history would be worth tracing. A significant classic like this one should not remain in this condition. Be a part of history and restore this car.

1954 Buick Roadmaster
You will always find a good selection of classic 1950’s cars for sale at the GAA Classic Winter Auction. A good example is this 1954 Buick Roadmaster Convertible which is scheduled to cross the auction floor on Saturday, February 24. With only three owners in its lifetime, it comes with its show awards, paperwork and receipts for the restoration. It has achieved the AACA Senior and Senior Grand National awards, plus a Buick Club of America Senior award.
1969 Cyclone Spoiler II
You can bet there will be some competitive bidding on this 1969 Cale Yarborough Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II muscle car when it crosses the auction floor at the Auto Palace on Saturday. It came from the Wood Brothers Museum. Out of 285 of these special edition Cyclone Spoiler II’s only 134 are known to exist today. Cale drove this one himself during the promotional weekend. They say the 2-door fastback has had one repaint. This is the kind of trophy muscle car you’ll find at the GAA Classic Auction.
Edsel Villager Wagon
Classic station wagons remain steaming hot in this market … especially rare ones like this. Here is a 1959 Edsel Villager Station Wagon which will be offered in the Saturday sale in Greensboro during the GAA Classic Winter Auction, February 22-24, 2024. It has an automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. Step back into the Rock N Roll 1950’s when the future was so bright you had to wear shades. You can take the whole family with you in this one. It is a great example of what you’ll find at the GAA Classic Winter Auction next month.

1976 Ford Thunderbird

The Crème and Gold two-tone paint is elegant and this is the sedan that came with SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. The two-door luxury sedan is a significant find because of its low miles. It is the perfect find for a collector.

2002 Mazda Miata MX-5, Classic Auto Mall, PA, 600 miles
