Rare Thunderbird
We have a rare one for you this week. Lost in the background of top collector cars here is an opportunity for our readers to get up close and familiar with a 1962 Ford Thunderbird Convertible which was not a Sports Roadster when it left the factory. There were 1,427 Sport roadsters which were built that year. They are rare. But here is a Thunderbird Convertible which is even more rare. Why? It is one of only nine very rare M Code optioned convertibles with factory Tripower carburetors, like the hot rods of bygone days.
This rare 1962 Ford Thunderbird Convertible is being offered for sale this week by Connors Motorcar Company in West Chester, Pennsylvania. It is likely that only the most geek-ish Thunderbird collectors will know how rare and valuable this Rangoon Red convertible really is. It is fully documented (see photo of the original Ford Motor Company order form in the gallery of photos on the ad page.) What’s more, it has been awarded the AACA Grand National and Thunderbird Club first place awards. They say the red vinyl interior is immaculate (verified by the photos on the ad page.) It comes with a white top, power steering, power brakes and power windows.
Our readers will note that the Sports Roadster package is an add-on. You can see the fiberglass tonneau cover and wire wheels in the photos. That is a nice touch. But the important stuff is under the hood. There you will see the M Code 390 ci V8 putting out 340 horsepower because of the Tripower 3X2 carburetor setup. Connors tells us it has recently been serviced. They say it “runs and drives beautifully.” Be sure to check out the photos on the ad page at the link.

Classic Car News This Week

Back to the Future
Remember four years ago when we had a photo of the promised Tesla Cybertruck here in the newsletter? Well it looks as though Elon Musk has delivered on his promise to produce the EV pickup truck. The first twelve Cybertrucks were delivered yesterday at Tesla’s Austin, Texas plant. Musk told the assemblage that the Cybertruck would be capable of hauling a one-ton load, and could tow 11,000 pounds. The bed is six feet long and four feet wide. As the event concluded the Cybertruck ordering form went live on the Tesla website. However, if you order the truck now you can only expect delivery on certain models sometime in 2024. It will come in three trim levels. The base Cybertruck will be rear-wheel-drive and have a 250 mile range. The base price will be $60,990. But delivery on the base model will not happen until 2025. The All-Wheel-Drive version of the Cybertruck will have a range of 340 miles and the cost will be $79,990. The top trim level will be called the Cyberbeast with a 320 mile range and will cost $99,990. Both of those trim levels will be available for 2024 delivery. Musk says Tesla will produce 250,000 Cybertrucks in 2025 the first full production year when base models will be available. The rumor is that Tesla has 1.9 million pre-sale orders for the Cybertruck. They say it will take up to five years to clear that many orders. Musk said earlier this week that “This will be the biggest thing Tesla has ever done. It’s huge.”

Hilton Head Concours
One of our favorite events of the year is the Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance at the Port Royal Golf Course on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. They really know how to put on a great Concours experience with all the Pomp and Circumstance you’d expect. The presentation of awards is spectacular with all of the rare vintage motorcars and classic cars parading in front of a huge crowd. This year’s Best of Show winner was a 1935 Duesenberg SJ Convertible Victoria owned by Chip Cofer of Tucker, Georgia.

Special Award
Our friends at the Cadillac & LaSalle Club Potomac Region tell us that one of their members won the Legacy Award from the Hilton Head Concours this year. Tom Alsop of Beaufort, South Carolina said he was pleasantly surprised when his 1936 Cadillac Series 8529 V12 Convertible Sedan won the award. He was featured in the December issue of the club’s newsletter. (Click here to read the Caddie Chronicle newsletter.)
We are sorry to hear that Vince Taliano will passing the torch as editor of the newsletter, though. Our best wishes to Vince.

Handyman Wagon
The 1955 Chevrolet was such a benchmark design that it changed the way buyers looked at new cars for the coming decades. So PSM Performance in Riverside, California decided it would be a good subject for a show quality build. This 1955 Chevrolet 210 Handyman Wagon has subtle modifications that blend the classic look with a more modern function. The leather interior you see in the photos was done by Elegance in Upland, California. This beautiful ride has only been driven 450 miles since the build. It features a 383 stroker motor, 700R4 automatic transmission and 9” posi rear end with a 4-link. It has a Ron Davis readiator , Vintage Air, Wilwood disc brakes and hydro boost. Note the Budnick wheels with Mickey Thompson tires. The cost to build was over $225,000. Look how clean it looks underneath.
“Afterburner” Custom
There is not another one like it. This 1933 Ford Coupe they call “Afterburner” on the show car circuit is a one-of-a-kind Super Street Rod based on the styling of a 1933 Ford. A multiple-award winner, it is all custom fabricated and packed with performance based equipment. This street rod was given high performance handling and performance along with all of the modern conveniences. It starts with a high-performance Factory Five Racing frame to give it great handling. Powered by a LS-3 E-Rod 6.2 L motor (approx. 450 H.P.) along with 4L65E electronic transmission with Lokar shifter, it puts the power to the ground with a Ford 8.8” rear end with Torsen Limited slip differential. For the suspension, it has a transverse inboard for the front and 4-link for the rear along with QA1 adjustable coil overs front and back. The look of this custom hot rod is elegant and there will never be another one like it. The car comes with four binders full of information on the build. Find out more at the link above.

1963 Ford Thunderbird
The theme for today seems to be Ford Thunderbirds. WeBe Autos in New York did a video on this 1963 Ford Thunderbird in a very unusual color, Rose Beige. It has a Sports Roadster package with wire wheels. They stopped making the Sports Roadsters half-way through the ’63 model year. But you could buy the tonneau fiberglass cover and wire wheels. Click the video window above to learn more. This one is gorgeous. Don’t you think?

1968 Ford Galaxie 500

1948 Mercury Eight
Sovereign Auto Purchasing in Flushing, Michigan has done it again. They came up with the best buy on our website this week. This 1948 Mercury Eight looks so good in the photos, we can hardly believe the affordable price. Good to its name, the Mercury Eight has a 255 ci Flathead V8 engine mated to a 3-speed column shifted manual transmission. You will note that the 4-door has suicide back doors. The car has some period correct enhancements such as headers, Holley carb, Edelbrock cylinder heads and dual exhaust. They say it is an extremely well sorted classic car. We think you’ll agree that it is a lot of car for the money. They are asking $19,900. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday.
1931 Ford Pickup
Although they don’t give us a lot of information on it, Classic Car Deals is offering a 1931 Ford Pickup for sale. This consignment car is not located at their Michigan location. You will have to call them to get more info. But they say it is an older restoration that is correct In detail. They also note that it runs and drives with no issues. 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air
For those who appreciate the pre-1955 Chevys, you have to look at the photos of this 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air 4-Door Sedan which was just posted by Country Classic Cars out of Staunton, Illinois. 1974 MGB Camaro
Who would put a Camaro 3.4L SFI motor in a little MGB? We don’t know but we’re sure glad they did. The Sandglow 1974 MGB Roadster has been upgraded with a sturdy 3.4L V6 engine. It is being offered for sale at Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. With about 1,350 miles on the odometer, they say it is an enjoyable driving experience. The car looks great with a black convertible top. You should have it inspected before you buy. But hurry. If you’re in the market for a classic sports car that combines style, performance, and heritage, look no further than this British classic sports car. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The price is affordable at $18,750.
2003 BMW Z4 Roadster
When BMW came out with the Z3 sports convertible they knew they had an instant hit. But the Z3’s reputation was that it did not have enough power for a sports car type ride. Then came the Z4 Roadster with the 3.0L engine, and that made everything right. Here is a 2003 BMW Z4 Roadster for sale. You don’t see a lot of these on the market so you would not know that you could buy one in this price range. But Sovereign Auto Purchasing, a wholesaler in Flushing, Michigan, just listed one for sale at a very nice price point. They say there are only 66k miles on this beautiful Sterling Gray sports car. It has a black convertible top and black leather interior. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is only $13,995.
