Old School Forever

’32 Ford Custom Show Truck

Custom built show cars and trucks have always been treasured finds among car collectors. That is especially true when some big name California custom builders are involved in the restoration.

Californians may have seen this 1932 Ford Custom Pickup named “Gold Rush” when it was competing at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona. It is just pure eye candy. This week it is being offered for sale at Classic Car Marketing of Southern California. The all steel ’32 is over the top with famous California builders involved in the custom show car build. Read the description at the link to review some of the top names on the California custom car scene. The Pagan Gold finish, graphics and pinstriping were done by Pete “Hot Dog” Finlan and custom fabrication was done by Steve Hansen of Steve’s Precision Fabrication. The interior was done by Armando’s Custom Upholstery with Diamond Tuck Pearl vinyl with gold thread.

A Comp Performance intake with chromed stacks dances to the tune of four IDA 48 Weber carburetors. Feeding a thirsty 350 Chevy small block, they help push out 425 hp as built by Machine Tech. The show quality drivetrain hooks up with a Turbo 400 transmission and connects to the ground via a Ford 9″ rear end. Chromed Edelbrock valve covers and a custom exhaust complete the pristine looking custom build.

Surf City Dano, a You Tube handle, took some video at the John Force Holiday Car Show. Click here to view. Like he says, “words can’t describe this car.”

You might say it is the “gold standard” for old school hot rods. Classic Car Marketing says it rides on a So-Cal Speed Shop Step Box ’32 frame with a buggy spring type rear end. And yet this one is affordably priced.  Click the link above to find out more.

Chevelle SS Inspection

As the prices on 1966 through 1971 Chevelle Super Sports keep escalating, it becomes more and more important not to make a mistake on condition when buying one. Condition class determines value. An Iowa man wanted us to go half-way across the country to the West Coast to inspect a 1970 Chevelle SS which he wanted to buy. He was aware that the air conditioning was not working, but he wanted us to make sure the body panels were solid. The independent inspector found that the air conditioning compressor was not locked up and the clutch turned freely. Although the body work was done nicely, he found bondo throughout the body. He also found some rust in the trunk due to leaks in the weather stripping. The paint had some scratches in it. The transmission was definitely not matching numbers. Overall, the Chevelle performed well and would be a fair Number Three driver. At least now the buyer knew what he was getting into.

Our newsletter readers know that you should always have a pre-purchase inspection done on a collector vehicle before you buy. There are no warranties on old cars, so it is buyer beware when purchasing a collector car. Click here to find out how to order a pre-purchase inspection and appraisal.

SEMA Hemi Cuda

Standing as a symbolic example of what a Pro Touring muscle car is all about, here is a 1970 Plymouth Cuda called “Conviction Built” as it was displayed at the SEMA Convention in 2008. It is being offered for sale by RK Motors Charlotte at their North Carolina facility. They say cost was no object when this car was built. It includes a litany of “big name brand” parts used to fabricate this custom muscle car. It was purpose built for SEMA to show off in the company of great pro touring customs. RK Motors says “no corners were cut, no shortcuts were taken, and this car stands at the pinnacle of the pro touring movement. A modern performance 6.1 L Hemi motor was built by Arrington to produce over 525 horsepower with fuel injection from a Holley Sniper EFI unit. Click the link for a full history of the build

Auctions

Your last chance … the last big collector car auction of the year 2023 will be the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction, held December 1-2, 2023 in Youngsville, North Carolina. And it may be the best one of the year for many of our readers. The Raleigh Classic has become the number one venue for original, unrestored, low mileage collector and specialty cars. Many of these cars are one-owner or one-family owned vehicles since new. There is no other collector car auction that has this reputation. Our readers know that the Raleigh Auction is one of those “hidden gems” of the collector car hobby. It is where some of the finest collections in the Southeastern U.S. bring their cars to “trim the herd.” Here is a quick preview of some of the cars we will be watching next weekend.

1969 Chevelle SS

This 1969 Chevelle SS 396/375 is a scorching red-hot deal! It will be one of the featured sales during the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction in Youngsville, NC next week, December 1-2, 2023. They say it is the recipient of a recent frame-off restoration and still has just 66k actual miles. Notice the Turbo-Jet 396/375 hp decal on the air cleaner. And it comes with a Muncie 4-speed, console with bucket seats and factory tach and gauges. Contact Raleigh Classic Auctions this week to see if any documentation comes with the car, or have us inspect it in the pre-sale. Chevelles are the hottest muscle cars in the collector car market right now.

1966 Amphicar 770

Coming from a prominent East Coast Collection, this rare 1977 Amphicar 770 Convertible comes in surprisingly authentic original condition. It retains its original Triumph 4-cylinder engine, and 4-speed manual transmission. The mileage of 38,803 is correct on the odometer. They say it was owned and operated for many years in Oregon. It will be offered at the Raleigh Classic Winter Auction next week on Saturday. They tell us it is almost impossible to find one in this highly original condition.

1959 Crown Imperial

This 1959 Crown Imperial Southampton Edition was one of the Persian Pink examples advertised in Vogue Magazine in 1959 as a special promotion targeting female buyers. It even comes with a special Elizabeth Arden cosmetics travel case that was part of the Vogue Magazine promotion. Chrysler’s top-of-the-line model Crown Imperial Southampton was the epitome of American luxury car culture. This car came with air conditioning (front and rear), power windows, 6-way power seat, power door locks, power steering, power brakes, dual side mirrors, swivel bucket seats, Electric Touch radio, power antenna, Hi-Way HI-FI record player, faux spare tire trunk lid, wide whitewall tires, and push-button automatic transmission. It is powered by the 413 ci V8 engine. This will be one of the featured classic 1950’s cars to cross the auction floor next week on Saturday.

You can look over the Raleigh Classic Auction cars listed here on the Cars-On-Line website by following this link to their inventory now.

Project Vehicles for Restoration

1955 Chevy Nomad

Here is a restoration project worth doing. It is a 1955 Chevy Nomad Wagon, one of the most sought after collector cars on the planet. The private party seller out of California says the bodywork is about 75 percent complete with some sheet metal panels replaced; the rocker panels right and left side, cargo floor pan, rear T/G lower pan, right door lower section and skinned. It includes a few weather seals, with more to be done. A list of re-chromed and new parts is posted in the ad copy. Can you tackle a job like this?

The following are just some of the cars available in the Project Car Section this week:

Deals of the Day

1998 Corvette Convertible

Motor Trend picked it as it’s CAR of the YEAR back in the day. This 1998 Corvette Convertible presented as the epitome of an American sports car. This one from Legendary Motors in Massachusetts is especially memorable in its Torch Red finish with Light Oak leather interior and coordinating Light Oak convertible top. It is powered by a 5.7-liter LS1 V8 paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Click this video link to view a walk-around tour and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because the askiing price is $18,900. Just think … a real nice Corvette convertible for under $20,000!

1960 Bugeye Sprite

Here is another great offering from Legendary Motors in Massachusetts. This 1960 Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite will put a smile on any collector’s face. It is finished in Old English White with a black interior and black top with tonneau cover. They say the 45-year-old paint shows well with the expected imperfection of older finishes, and they note no observable rust seen on the finish. The underside presents well (see a video on the ad page) with some areas of minor surface rust only. Click here to view a walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our Deal of the Day on Sunday. The asking price is $19,900.

1958 Mercedes 180a

The theory here is that all early Mercedes-Benz motorcars will become extremely collectible. So this 1958 Mercedes 180a Ponton is just unusual enough to fit the theory. If you buy them now they may have a chance to accelerate in value in the next ten to twenty years. This one is being offered by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. Finished in Mittelblau – Medium Blue (350H), it is complemented with a Tan interior and comes with Blaupunkt radio and Mercedes-Benz branded hub caps. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their price: $14,750.

2005 Mustang GT

If you are looking for a late model sports car which is turnkey ready and needs nothing to make it a decent ride, look here at this 2005 Mustang GT. It is being offered for sale by a small dealer in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and he says it is super clean (as might be verified by the photos.) With just 58,000 miles, it has a 4-speed and complete aftermarket exhaust including headers and high flow cats. You should always have these cars inspected before you buy. But hurry on this one. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. They are asking $14,995.

1985 Mercedes 380SL

Sovereign Auto Purchasing (a Michigan wholesaler) has some interesting deals on Mercedes-Benz luxury sports cars this week. Here is a 1985 Mercedes 380SL Roadster that has a clean looking body. They say it has “no rust” but is not currently running. Found in storage, it will take some mechanical knowledge to get it back on the road. It has 162,528 miles on the odometer. For the right buyer it could be a DEAL of the DAY. The asking price is $5,000.

2006 Mercedes SLK 280

Sovereign Auto Purchasing also has a sweet 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLK 280 Convertible for sale with only 45k miles. It comes with the retractable hardtop. These cars are hard to find in this kind of condition. They say it is “clean” with stunning color combination and runs and drives excellent. Click here to view a video of the retractable top going up. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. Their asking price is $18,995.

1987 Ford Bronco XLT

The introduction of the new retro Ford Bronco in 2021 brought greater appreciation for the first five generations of Broncos which came before it. Here is a rust free white 1987 Ford Bronco XLT being offered for sale by a small dealer in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They say it is rust free and originally from Colorado. It has a 351 ci HO engine, cold air conditioning and even a set of new tires. Most important, they say it “runs and drives excellent.” The popular four-wheel-drive Bronco will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $19,995.

Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
