Rare D100 Sweptside
Threatened by Chevrolet’s Cameo Carrier Pickup trucks, Dodge knew it had to compete with them in the “passenger friendly” half-ton pickup market. Their “Sweptside” pickup series emerged in 1957 and it changed how pickup trucks would be used in the future. Pickup trucks now had dual purposes; to look nice enough for the family to go to church in on Sunday, and be ready to haul goods to market on Monday.
This week an incredibly rare 1957 Dodge D100 Sweptside Pickup was listed for sale by Ellingson Motorcars out of Rogers, Minnesota. Be sure to view all the photos because you never see these little half-ton pickups for sale. There are just so few that have survived. And note the condition on this one.
Chrysler’s legendary designer, Virgil Exner, was bringing in the “Forward Look” with ideas from the aerospace industry making everything more streamlined with a modern progressive look. Dodge used many of his ideas in making the D100 Sweptside pickup truck. Their bodymen actually used spare parts off passenger cars and station wagons to create the look of this unique light pickup truck. Truck buyers had never seen anything quite like it.
They think there were only about 200 of the Dodge D100 Sweptside pickups built that first year. It was only produced in limited numbers from 1957 through 1959. They believe that just 2,500 were produced altogether. With the unique design and such low production numbers, the Sweptside pickups were “born to be collectible.” That’s why they are so sought after by collectors today.
This classic pickup truck came with a 230 ci L-Head Inline 6 cylinder engine paired with a single barrel carburetor that together were said to have created 120 horsepower when new. This truck has an automatic transmission which changes gears via a push button selector on the dash. Optioned with turn signals and a driver’s side outside mirror, it has a wood bed and steel tailgate.

Classic Car News This Week

The new eRay Corvette
Chevrolet was “showing off” its new 2024 Corvette eRay this week. It is the first all-wheel-drive Corvette and the first time a Corvette has been offered with a hybrid power train. It gets 495 of its 655 horsepower from the 6.2L V8 gas engine. Chevrolet touts it as the fastest Corvette ever, capable of doing 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Interestingly, the eRay is not a “plug-in” hybrid. The 1.9 kilowatt battery is charged with energy from the braking action and down shifting. Chevrolet engineers insist that the eRay was not designed to save emissions, but to create superior performance.

Japan’s Auto Show
Japan has not had a major auto show since the Tokyo Motor Show before COVID in 2019. So it was a breath of fresh air for Japanese new car buyers when the new Japan Mobility Show opened this week with a record number of exhibitors. Toyota continues to tease a fully electric exotic super car they call the FT-Se concept car. It stands out among a crowded field of electric cars and concepts being demonstrated in Tokyo this week. Toyota has not committed to producing the FT-Se yet. They have dropped hints that the soonest it would reach production would be in 2026.

1958 Impala Convertible
A mild recession upset sales numbers for the 1958 new car selling season among automotive manufacturers. So 1958 was a one-off year for automotive designs. That makes this 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible much more valuable to collectors because of how rare these cars are. This one is presented by Ideal Classic Cars in Venice, Florida. It is made even more desirable by having the 348 ci big block V8 engine and a tripower caruretor factory setup, like a hot rod back in the day. All decked out, it has the Contientnal kit, fender skirts and a power top. What more could you ask for? If you contact Ideal Classic Cars, their sales persons will do a full walk-around with you on Skype or Facetime.
Bugatti Atlantic Coupe
Inspired by the legendary designs of the Bugatti, noted Italian designer Ron Santarsiero of Santarsiero Concepts Design Studio in Southern California built this 1938 Bugatti 57SC Atlantic Coupe. It was intended to be a fusion of the iconic 1930’s Art Deco cars. The lines of the car are hand-shaped aluminum and composite materials. Gorgeous detail went into this build. It uses Corvette mechanics with a stock LS4 engine built on a 1989 Corvette chassis. See the suicide doors in the photos. Click this link to review a walk-around video of the Bugatti neo-classic car narrated by the owner/builder. There are only two ever built. Get the whole story in this video.
Motion Mustang
An actual K-Code Mustang Fastback was race prepped by Motion Performance back in the day. this 1965 Motion Performance Mustang Fastback was campaigned through the 1970’s. Then after years in storage the car was restored by its owner in its racing livery. He says he beat so many Hugger Orange Camaros that he called it the “Hugger Mugger.” It is now being offered for sale at Streetside Classics in Ft Worth, Texas. This is an historic Pony car with both authenticity and provenance. Click here to see a walk-around video. Race car collectors will drool over this one.
Kopper Kaballero
Emerging from the Southern California car culture of the 1950’s and 1960’s came a fan favorite 1958 Ford Thunderbird classic custom car which was dubbed the “Kopper Kaballero.” Today we know it more as a rolling art form than automotive motif. As part of that Kustom Kulture it exhibits frenched headlights, shaved doors, wild pearl paints with heavy metallic flake and some very adventurous bodywork. As a tribute to that era this ’58 was completed in 2001 by Lucky 7 Rods and Customs out of Antioch, California. It is being offered for sale this week at Rock Solid Motorsports in Elkhart, Indiana. Click here to view a walk-around video and get up close with this classic custom. Then take it for a test drive.

Three things we know will happen without fail at this time of year … 1. Next week is the big collector car auction put on at the Palace in Greensboro. That’s where 750 vehicles are scheduled to cross the auction floor from November 2nd to the 4th, Thursday thru Saturday. Ferrari F430 Spider
Just look at all the photos of this 2007 Ferrari F430 Spider. This is one of the most important Ferraris ever produced and still embodies the exotic car look and feel that makes Ferrari so appealing. The F430 was such a magnificent version of the Ferrari that collectors swoon over it even today. It appears to be a base F430 (not a Scuderia) so it will be a little less expensive. But it does come with Daytona seats and carbon fiber driver zone and dash. It has the hi power F1 transmission and such nice interior. It still looks new in the photos. Watch for it to cross the auction floor on Saturday.
