Cougar Eliminator SCJ
A 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator is a rare and desirable classic muscle car in its own right. But the car you see displayed here is light years beyond that. This is an incredible find, being offered for sale this week in the Mercury Muscle Car Section of the Cars-On-Line.com website. The opportunity to own a muscle car this rare seldom comes along.
This is a 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator 428 SCJ with Ram Air, the Drag Pak option and a 4-speed. Of the 2,268 Eliminators produced in 1970, only 374 had the 428 CJ. But only 127 of the 428 big block Eliminators were Super Cobra Jets with the Drag-Pack option. And, of those, only 112 had the Ram Air option. Only 70 of those with the Ram Air option had 4-speeds. That is what makes this Competition Blue 1970 Cougar Eliminator 428 SCJ so rare.
This particular Cougar Eliminator with the Super Cobra Jet big block engine was born in October of 1969 produced at the Dearborn plant. It was sold at College Merc Sales LTD in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. The Marti Report indicates that it came with a black vinyl interior with Hi-Back bucket seats. The private party seller is from British Columbia, Canada. He says it still has its numbers matching drivetrain. It is one of only two SCJ Eliminators with Ram Air sold in Canada. It took three years to restore this car. Click here to view the restoration photos. You can also read the Elite Marti Report in the gallery.
1970 was the only year Mercury produced the Q code 428 big block engines for the Cougar. A 6,000 rpm tach was standard equipment on all Eliminators. And whenever the 428 big block motor was used the Cougar would come with a 5/8-inch stabilizer bar.

Classic Car News This Week
What’s Hot
A little observed fact is that classic Porsche sports cars are the hottest cars in the market in the past few years. While many other formerly high dollar collector cars are depreciating in value (the market is down about 7 per cent this year) these classic Porsches are escalating in value since the beginning of the Covid era. CNBC’s Robert Frank reported that classic Porsche values are up 40 percent since Covid. This 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster displays coachwork by Reutter. It is being offered for sale by Gullwing Motor Cars out of New York. They say it was raced in the 1960’s. A similar car to this one sold for $350,000 at one of the Pebble Beach auctions this year.
AMC Pre-Purchase Inspection
When a New Jersey buyer asked us to inspect a classic 1970 AMC AMX muscle car for him in Wisconsin his concern was about which condition class to peg it in. The car was a “barn find” so he wanted to know where “the rust and rot was.” Was it a low Number 3 Condition Class that runs and drives but needs some cosmetic work short of a full restoration? Or was it a low Number 4 Condition Class that needs a lot of panel replacement and structural repair? There was a lot to consider as there always is in the pursuit of a “barn find.” The inspector seemed to be overall impressed with the body panels and structural integrity of the AMX. There were some troublesome discoveries along the way, mostly little things like the window regulators and horn not working. You can read the entire report here.
The first item on a buyer’s “To Do” list should be to contact the Cars-On-Line Inspection Service. Buying a collector car is much different than buying a new or used late model car. It is always a “buyer beware” type of sale. With a network of inspectors all over the U.S. and Canada, your first line of protection in any sale is a COL Collector Car Inspection. Learn more about collector car inspections when you read our COL Inspection Referral Service page.
This Weeks Featured Stories
1999 Shelby Series 1
We think this 1999 Shelby Series 1 will someday become one of the most important collector cars to come out of the relatively tepid 1990’s. Carroll Shelby, for all of his health problems during this period, designed a car from scratch. It was an exotic sports car with racing pedigree. Even today the chassis and body are impressive examples of modern automotive design. And the 4.0 Oldsmobile Aurora engine was pumped up to 350 horsepower by the Shelby American team. The Series 1 you see here is rare in every sense of the word. Just 249 of these Series 1’s were ever built. Only a handful were dressed in Centennial silver with maroon racing stripes. The Classic Auto Mall tells us this one has just 986 actual miles.
Cord 810 Sportsman
The “coffin nosed” Cords were an innovative chapter in automotive history. This is an especially beautiful example, a 1936 Cord 810 Sportsman Convertible with concours award winning prowess. It is being offered for sale this week at Ellingson Motorcars in Rogers, Minnesota. When this car was new it was noted to have front wheel drive, “semi-automatic” transmissions, hide-away convertible top, and “roll up headlights.” Click this link to view an informative walk-around video and hear it run. It is recognized by the Classic Car Club of America as a Full Classic which makes it eligible for CCCA events and CARavans. It has spent most of its recent years in private collections where it was shown and has won concours events.
American Show Truck
For the second week in a row there is a Chevelle LS6 in our New Listings. This week, WeBe Autos listed a Tuxedo Black 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 454/450 hp big block muscle car for sale. This is one of the rarest muscle cars on the planet. The monster 454 with high horsepower put it in a category with the Mopar Hemi cars. They tell us there are only 9 miles on this car since its nut and bolt rotisserie restoration. It has the Muncie M-22 Rock Crusher 4-speed, 12-bolt Posi rear end, F41 suspension, U14 tach and gauges, and is a true time capsule capturing the look and feel of the muscle car era. They say the dash, gauges, seats, headrests etc. all show like brand new. Untold amounts of money went into this restoration.
Auctions

Every fall the Lakeland Collector Car Auction is held at the Sun N Fun Expo near Lakeland, Florida. It is the last chance for many collectors to find a great classic car or truck before the car show season ends. The Lakeland Collector Car Auction is put on by Carlisle Auctions. It will be held November 10-11, 2023. Here are a few of their auction offerings just listed on the Cars-On-Line.com website this week.
1955 Corvette
One of the top featured offerings at this year’s Lakeland Collector Car Auction is this 1955 Corvette in its original Harvest Gold with a green interior and top. That is a rare combination. And this early Corvette has been honored to be a Triple Crown Award winner, having taken an NCRS Top Flight Award, Duntov Award and the Gold Spinner Award. It has also achieved its Bloomington Gold certificate. It has a 319 serial number for 1955. It will win awards solely based on its unusual color scheme.
’67 Indy Pace Car
In its first year the Chevrolet Camaro was chosen to pace the Indianapolis 500 Championship race. The 1967 Camaro RS/SS Indy Pace Car Convertible is one of the most sought after collector cars on the planet. You will need to contact Carlisle Auctions to find out if there is any documentation on this car. The description does not offer any restoration information or data. The car does take a stunning photo. They say it has the correct 396 big block motor, Muncie M-21 4-speed transmission and a 12-bolt rear end.
Ford F-250 Custom
The Carlisle Auctions are famous for their All-Truck Hour on the first day of the auction event. We think this 1988 Ford F-250 Custom Pickup will be one of the offerings during All-Truck Hour at this show. They say it still has only 66,993 miles. The oversized wheels, tires and lift make it a good candidate for off-roading. They say it runs and drives as good as it looks. Watch our weekly promos for more on the All-Truck Hour at the Lakeland Collector Car Auction this year.
Carlisle Auctions is currently listing their inventory on the Cars-On-Line.com site. Watch this link to their inventory all weekend for more great collector and specialty vehicle offerings.

Deals of the Day
1966 Ford Galaxie 500
Probably because they are Fords, not many of these mid-year Galaxies have survived over the years. And this 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible presented here for sale is not a show car, but more of a driver quality car. That is what Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois tells us anyway. They say it is perfect for weekend cruises or an excellent candidate for restoration. They note that the convertible top material will need to be replaced, although the top functions well. Click here to view a walk-around video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $16,500.
1955 Chrysler Newport
You don’t see these in the collector car market for sale that often. Here is a 1955 Chrysler Windsor Deluxe Newport 2-Door Hardtop. It was kind of ahead of its time as a luxury performance car. It is also being offered for sale at Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. They say it is a nice older exterior restoration with great original interio. It has the rare 301 Spitfire V8 with an automatic transmission, dual exhaust and power steering. Sounds great!!! Runs and drives. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. I think you will agree that this is a lotta’ car for the money.

1964 Chevrolet C10
It wasn’t too long ago that these early 1960’s pickup trucks just looked old. Now, all of a sudden, those old trucks are beginning to look classic and beautiful. It’s amazing what time does to old trucks. This 1964 Chevrolet C10 Regular Cab is a great example. The fleetside pickup is being offered for sale through Unique Classic Cars out of Mankato, Minnesota. Although the paint is not perfect, it does come with power steering and power brakes. Check out the walk-around video to see the chrome and brightwork. Real nice. You will see a wood bed with spray-in bedliner along the outer portions of the bed and wheel wells. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $27,900.
1964 Ford Thunderbird
Don’t misunderstand this post. We are not endorsing this 1964 Ford Thunderbird Convertible as anything but what the seller has called it. It runs and drives. And although it has a good body and paint, the photos show that it needs a good amount of TLC or more to make it a daily driver. Check the photos carefully. They say the top is nice and that it has a good original interior. Those are actual wire wheels. And it does come with the big block motor which you can see in the photos. It is equipped with factory air conditioning, power steering power brakes and an automatic transmission. So what is so special about this T-Bird? The price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. They are only asking $13,000.
1984 Camaro Berlinetta

Sold Thru Cars On Line
Here are some of the comments from happy sellers who were nice enough to tell us about their experience advertising on the Cars On Line website.
One of the hidden gems of the Cars-On-Line.com collector car ads was a 1936 Ford Pro Street Pickup from Louisville, Ohio. The seller had had his custom pickup for sale on our site for quite some time. But our new site worked in his favor as his car was spotted by the right buyer. He filled out our SOLD thru COL form.
When your car sells, we really appreciate hearing about it. Just use this SOLD Form to let us know, and maybe tell us the story about how it sold. That is what we live for. Your success makes us grow.
