The First Muscle Car
The opus of the muscle car, where it all began … almost everyone is in agreement that it was with the advent of Pontiac’s GTO that the muscle car movement came to be. Before it there were no factory manufactured hot rods to which young Americans could aspire. In a GM-centric view of automotive history, the GTO was the beginning of the car culture in America.
So here is a 1964 Pontiac GTO for sale from a collector in Lindsay, Ontario. More important, this is an original GTO with Tripower right from the factory. That was Pontiac’s omage to the hot rodding craze back in the day. Builders would increase the horsepower by adding carburetion. You can imagine how drag racers were drooling when the GTO came out that first year in 1964. Pontiac sold 32,450 GTO’s and the muscle car era was on. Of that number, only 8,200 came with Tripower. While the regular 4-barrel version of the 389 is rated at 335 hp from the factory, the tripower was rated at 360 hp. One thing we know is that M-21 4-speed is rare.
The seller says this is an actual 2200 series GTO 389 with tripower, a 4-speed and 12-bolt rear end with positraction. That’s important because an awful lot of the tripowers out there on the market these days did not come that way from the factory. He says he believes the gearing is 373 and cruises well on the freeway.
The color on this car is Nocturne Blue, a dark blue which the seller describes as “real pretty” cleared and polished to a deep shine. He said he got the car on trade with a collector who “had to have my Hemi Road Runner.” The old owner bought the GTO at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee.
When you consider the price being asked is in Canadian, this car is going for about $40,000 less than it would be worth here in the U.S. Let’s see how long it takes to sell.

Classic Car News This Week

Iola 2023 Wrapup
If you are exhausted from Swap Meet fatique this week it’s probably because you were at the Iola 2023 Car Show and Swap Meet in Iola, Wisconsin this past weekend. What a great show. It just gets better every year. It is one of the largest swap meets in the world with 4,200 vendor spots on 300 acres of grassy slopes. You have to camp out and spend the weekend because there is just too much to see. In the USA Today 10 Best poll for 2023, the Iola Car Show was picked as the No. 4 car show event in the country behind Cruisin The Coast in Mississippi (which was chosen as the top show in the country by USA Today pollers), the MSRA’s Back to the 50’s Car Show in St Paul, Minnesota, and the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville each year. That is ranking with some great company.
For more top car show venues and dates, you should check Cars-On-Line’s Car Show Calendar of Events. You can bookmark your favorites and plan you summer vacations around them.
COL Inspection Service
When a Wisconsin collector wanted to know how much his 1950 Studebaker Champion Convertible was worth, he filled out our online form to have a pre-purchase inspection done on the vehicle. His purpose was to get it ready to sell, and he wanted to know what the value would be. Because it had some filler in the body and the finish had some chips and scratches, this car appraised out at a Class Three rating (the category where most vehicles fall into.) The filler was found in the usual places on these Studebakers. Overall the body was in good shape with no rust, and the driver quality repaint was a good match for the original Tulip Cream factory color. In its current condition it is a driver quality car, but a very rare one. It would be worth a full restoration. You can read the report to find out what we placed the value at.
It is a great idea to have your car appraised before you put it up for sale. We can help. Read some of our sample pre-purchase inspections at the Inspections Page today.
This Weeks Featured Stories
1969 M-Code Barracuda
It is disputed as to how many were ever built. In truth we know that there were very few of the 1969 M-Code Barracudas built. Some say only 303 were produced. What is more important, though, is that very few survive today. A Canadian collector just listed this rare fish. It is a 1969 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback with the M-Code in its VIN. These cars are referred to as M-Code cars because of the “M” in the VIN indicating the rare 440 engine. When this car was restored in 2002, most of the parts were original due to low mileage, otherwise NOS and date coded/period correct parts were used. Currently the car has 45,122 original miles on it. The seller says it has always been a Canadian car and remains there now. Mopar collectors know how rare these cars are. Read the description at the link above to learn more.
Rolls-Royce Phantom I
Wow! What a treat to find a 1926 Rolls-Royce Phantom I in this condition. This is an All-Weather Cabriolet coachbuilt by Barker. It is being offered for sale this week at Gullwing Motor Cars in Astoria, New York. This one has impeccable pedigree because it was commissioned by Alfred Loewenstein, a financier who in that era was considered the third wealthiest man in the world. It features wind up windows, and the open Sedanca de Ville option with the open chauffeur’s cabin and droptop for the passenger compartment. In the 1980’s it was treated to a refurbishing at White Post Restorations, and shown at the Pebble Beach Concours in 1991. Later it achieved an AACA Grand National first place and a CCCA Premier award. Gullwing tells us it remains mechanically strong, and runs and drives excellent.
1969 Chevy Nova SS L78
A muscle car like this comes along rarely. Here is an opportunity to own a 1969 Chevy Nova SS L78 with the high performance 396/375 horsepower big block motor. It is being offered for sale by Classic Car Marketing representing one of their clients. They say it has just 68,000 miles. Less than 4,000 of these L78 Novas were produced with 4-speeds from the factory. This one comes with a numbers matching 396/375 HP Big Block backed by a numbers matching M21 4 speed, plus numbers matching 12-bolt rear-end with 355 gears, matching intake, alternator, carb, manifolds. Radio delete, L78 Fan blades and pulleys, front disc brakes, new cambered exhaust. I think you’ll agree that is a lotta’ muscle car.
Auctions

Only one week remains now until the GAA Classic Summer Auction begins in Greensboro, North Carolina, July 20-22, 2023. Dedicated to their following of classic car, muscle car and unique specialty vehicle buyers, the GAA Classic is well respected in the collector car community. You will be impressed with their lineup for the July auction. Here are a few of the top cars which we will be watching next weekend.
1971 Plymouth Cuda
This gorgeous 1971 Plymouth Cuda Convertible has it all. The look, the big block power and the legendary stance that only a ’71 has. As you can see it has undergone a recent rotisserie restoration (see photos at the link.) It has a 4 Speed Manual Transmission with Floor Mounted Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, Mopar Rallye wheels, hood pins, dual exahaust, Rallye gauges and the Go-Wing. Of course, the salient theme with a Torred finish with black 282 billboard really set it off. It will be offered for sale next week at the GAA Classic Auction on Saturday, July 22.
1959 Cadillac DeVille Convertbile
Unbelievable as it may seem, this 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible is said to remain unrestored and a survivor class collector car. Look at the photos on the display page. You wouldn’t think an original car could look this good after 64 years. This beauty is painted in Brenton Blue and has her Original Body Panel, Trunk Mat, Leather Seats, Chrome and More. This classy classic is a California Car that appears to have been Kept Inside for It’s entire life. Even the chrome does not show pitting. It is said to have a had one repaint in its factory color. It will cross the auction floor at the GAA Classic Auction on Saturday, July 22, 2023. What do you think it will sell for?
1995 AM General Hummer H1
As an example of the interesting trucks and off-road vehicles that will be offered at the GAA Classic Auction next week, here is a 1995 AM General Hummer H1, one of the civilian purchased models built for the street. It is being offered at No Reserve on Saturday. It is considered a “Wagon” in Hummer terminology. The AutoCheck and CARFAX reports show it to be a one-owner. And they say it has only 40k actual miles which has been documented on the title (see photo of the odometer reading on the ad page.) The big rig has a 5.7L V8 engine and air conditioning. Note the custom roof rack. The consignor says it has always been garage kept.

1934 Ford 5-Window Coupe
Once again this week Unique Specialty & Classic Cars out of Mankato, Minnesota has our featured video. They may be cornering the market on great classic car videos. Here they have a 1934 Ford 5-Window Coupe that shows to well in the video and photos that it almost looks like it came from the Ford factory in this condition. But this one is a street rod which they are offering in a very affordable price range. They even offer a limited warranty plan on this car. Be sure to watch the video.

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1952 Rolls Silver Dawn
This 1952 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn looks too good to need restoration, but all cars need a redo at some point. It is being offered for sale at Gullwing Motor Cars in New York. They say the left-hand-drive classic luxury car would benefit from a light restoration. Not currently running, an expert technician would find it an easy restoration with a lot of investment potential.

Deals of the Day
1966 Dodge Charger
You have to admit that this 1966 Dodge Charger is a pretty interesting “barn find.” With a 318 ci V8 engine mated to an automatic transmission, the Mopar is finished in a pale yellow over a black interior. It is being offered for sale at Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. The car does start up and drive, but it should be gone through by a skilled technician to bring it to road worthy condition. You can see from the photos what the condition of the interior is. This is one that needs to be inspected before you buy because you want to know for sure the condition class. But what an opportunity, eh? It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. You don’t find one like this every day. They are asking $17,500.
1964 Corvair Convertible
Not a perfect car by any means, but this 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza 900 Convertible may surprise you with its Ember Red finish and white interior. It is being offered for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. It comes with a manual transmission, white-line tires with Monza hubcaps, dual carburetor, chrome bumpers, quad headlamps, louvered engine cover, vent windows, side pockets, “Monza” badges printed on interior side of doors, manual windows, manually operated backseat windows, personal backseat ashtrays, and sun visors. This would be a good one to have inspected before you buy. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $15,750
1948 Dodge B-Series
A very rare 1948 Dodge B-Series Shortbed pickup truck was listed by Country Classic Cars also this week. This truck is finished in red and black over a matching red and black interior. It is powered by an inline L-head six-cylinder displaces 217 cubic inches good for 95 hp featuring a new carburetor and wires mated to a floor shift 3-speed manual transmission. The classic pickup truck runs and drives well and would be an excellent candidate for restoration or to just enjoy as is. You should have it inspected to get a full condition report. But hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their asking price is $19,500.
1955 Ford Thunderbird
White Thunderbirds were a “thing” back in the 1950’s. The adventurous spirit of our youth lead us to want to live on the edge and drive two-seater sports cars. That’s why the Ford Thunderbird came of age. Here is a first year 1955 Ford Thunderbird for sale at Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. Our readers know that we always say, “If you find a nice first generation Thunderbird for under $30,000 …. Buy it!” This one is a little rougher than most. If you get too picky this one might wave at you just a bit. But overall it has nice body and panel gaps. Have it inspected to get a second opinion on the body and frame. But hurry. They don’t come along at this price very often. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. Their asking price is $27,500.
1994 Mustang GT
In 5.0 land the 1990’s Mustangs were really hot. And nothing excited sports car fans more than the 1994 Mustang GT Convertible. This one is being offered for sale by WeBe Autos in New York. It has just 68k miles and a new top. They tell us it was always stored in a heated garage for the winter and never saw rain or snow. It comes with air conditioning and they say it runs like a dream. The high output 5.0L engine will get your heart pumpin. The car is in nice “driver quality” condition. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday next week. Their asking price is $13,995.
1972 Corvette T-Top
The Corvette will always be the “gold standard” for the collector car market. The last of the steel bumper Corvettes was in 1972. This 1972 Corvette is being offered for sale at the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. They tell us the body colored T-tops fit well and chrome trim is in excellent condition. The C3 was purchased at Corvettes at Carlisle in 1995. It underwent an engine rebuild in 1996 and has approximately 15K miles on it since said rebuild and the carburetor was changed in 2006. In 2008 it received a chambered exhaust with new calipers and brakes in 2022. There are a few issues with the car which are noted in the ad writeup. But the price is very affordable and seldom seen on a Corvette of this quality. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. Their asking price is $27,000.
2000 Porsche Boxster
One of the best things Porsche has done in the last 27 years is the introduction of the Boxster, a Porsche quality sports car in an affordable price range. This week the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania listed a 2000 Porsche Boxter in a light silver finish that has a matching hardtop. You have to admit that is quite a stunning look. A recently serviced 2.7 Liter 6 cylinder engine fits under the hood with EFI and a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and 3.56 geared rear axle. Faithfully maintained and enjoyed, this silver bullet is ready to perform and is just a blast to drive. Turn the key and take it home. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $11,500.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
