Monster Hemi 426
426 Hemi Mopar muscle cars are the ones all others are judged by. If you want to give respect to an engine you compare it with the Elephantine Hemi. Just mentioning the word “Hemi” in a crowded room will make you the center of attention.
You can probably feel the ground shake as we introduce this red 1968 Dodge Hemi Charger R/T to our newsletter readers here. It is being offered for sale by a private party seller from Nebraska. He says it is an original California car that still has only traveled 32k miles in its lifetime. It was in a collection in Illinois for many years. The seller says it is an honest car that had a repaint about 30 years ago. There is a link in the ad copy that takes you to a Facebook page with extra photos. You can tell that this car gets driven. But the seller says everything works like new, i.e. windows, doors. And it comes with paperwork. He says it even has its original sheet metal.
They sold 96,000 B-Body Chargers in 1968. Of those, only 17,000 were R/T (Road and Track) models. But just 475 of the R/T’s were ordered with the 426 Street Hemi motor.
This red 1968 Dodge Hemi Charger R/T was featured in the Mopar Collectors Guide January 2004 with a photo on the front cover. They did a five page story on the car. It is significant that somehow, after all these years, the car remains with its Chrysler Certi-card and a full broadcast sheet. If there is a premium on being all original, this one might edge out the rest.

Classic Car News This Week

Dragonsnake Relived
Shelby American has announced that they will be producing a very limited series of Continuation Cobras replicating the legendary Dragonsnake Cobra of 1963. Shelby built five original Cobras that were meant for drag racing. They are referred to as Dragonsnake Cobras. The Dragonsnake 289 Cobra replica you see here is in the Fuchsia metallic livery of the car campaigned by Bruce Larson in NHRA drag racing competition for 1964 and 1965. It was on display at the Carlisle Ford Nationals earlier this month. It is said to weigh about 2,100 pounds and put out over 500 horsepower. It is one of five such commemorative Continuation Cobras to be produced at Legendary GT, Shelby’s production shop. The price is pretty stiff. They will be marketed for $750,000. A real original Dragonsnake Cobra 289 was sold at auction last year for $1.4 million.
AMC AMX Inspection
When a New Jersey buyer asked us to inspect a classic 1970 AMC AMX muscle car for him in Wisconsin. His concern was about which condition class to peg it in. The car was a “barn find” so he wanted to know where “the rust and rot was.” Was it a low Number 3 Condition Class that runs and drives but needs some cosmetic work short of a full restoration? Or was it a low Number 4 Condition Class that needs a lot of panel replacement and structural repair? There was a lot to consider as there always is in the pursuit of a “barn find.” The inspector seemed to be overall impressed with the body panels and structural integrity of the AMX. There were some troublesome discoveries along the way, mostly little things like the window regulators and horn not working. You can read the entire report here.
The first item on a buyer’s “To Do” list should be to contact the Cars-On-Line Inspection Service. Buying a collector car is much different than buying a new or used late model car. It is always a “buyer beware” type of sale. With a network of inspectors all over the U.S. and Canada, your first line of protection in any sale is a COL Collector Car Inspection. Learn more about collector car inspections when you read our COL Inspection Referral Service page.

Cougar Rent-A-Racer
Did you know that Hertz offered Mercury Cougar Eliminators as part of their Rent-A-Racer program? This is the first one we’ve seen advertised. A private party seller from Three Rivers, California listed this 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator for sale this week. Even more, it is a very rare Cougar Eliminator Sunroof Coupe, one of only 101 produced. With only 23k original miles we know it must be the lowest mile example left on the planet. It has the standard 351-4V V8 mated with the FMX Select Shift automatic transmission and 3.0 rear axle as a Hertz rental unit would have been. The seller says the original build sheet and invoice will transfer to the new owner. A rare muscle car like this one, with such history and provenance, rarely comes along.
McLaren Artura
Anticipating the EV era coming on, McLaren came out with the 2023 McLaren Artura, a hybrid super car that creates 671 horsepower with a mid-engine Twin Turbo V6 backed up by a 7.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack beneath the cabin. This one is being offered for sale this week at McLaren North Jersey in South Ramsey, New Jersey. It has the new Flux Green exterior finish. Stealthy fast, it will get you from 0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds, but it makes almost no sound while accelerating. Top speed is said to be 205 miles an hour. The Artura uses McLaren’s new Carbon Lightweight Architecture which is lighter than anything they have put on the street before. It has a stiffer handling package for the track, but a softer handling capability when driving on the street. The technology built into this one is intriguing.
’55 Crown Victoria Skyliner
What a find! This 1955 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria Skyliner with the famous Glass Roof is the epitome of classic 1950’s pinache. The crazy two-tone Pink over Black paint is buffed out to a glossy sheen and the chrome is sparkling. Check out the photos of the interior. That is amazing. It is being offered for sale this week at R&R Classic Cars in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. We believe Elvis is driving one of these In heaven right now. The undercarriage is as clean as the topside. You can review the photos at the ad link. The glass roofed Skyliner is so rare. The forerunner to the modern day moonroofs, Ford was way ahead of its time. Only 1,999 were built in 1955. That makes them rare and collectible today.
Auctions

The GAA Classic Summer Auction will be held July 20-22, 2023 at their permanent auction facility in Greensboro, North Carolina. Dedicated to their following of classic car, muscle car and unique specialty vehicle buyers the GAA Classic is well respected in the collector car community. We are impressed with their lineup for the July auction. We’ve never seen so many high quality No Reserve offerings at an auction like this before. Check these out.
1958 Corvette at No Reserve
We’ve never seen this happen before. Here is an AACA award winning 1958 Corvette which will be offered at No Reserve during the GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro, North Carolina. This will be one of the feature cars on Saturday, July 22, 2023 in prime time. It won an AACA Grand National Senior Award in 2003. You could get lucky and submit the high bid on this one in July. What do you think it would be like to drive this beauty?
1925 Ford Doctor’s Coupe
The doctor who delivered you may have driven one of these. (But that would mean you are older than dirt … lol.) This is a 1925 Ford Model T Doctor’s Coupe being offered at auction in the upcoming GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro, North Carolina. Have you ever seen one nicer? Incredibly, it will be offered at No Reserve, so it will sell to the highest bidder. A tall T like this would be worthy of your collection. Find out more at the link.
1974 Ford Bronco
There is nothing hotter in the collector car market right now than the original first generation Ford Broncos. The started the off-road culture way back then and the off-roadin’ hobby still flourishes partly because the Bronco is still so popular. This 1974 Ford Bronco will be offered at No Reserve on Friday, July 21, on the second day of the GAA Classic Auction. This U15 is a true wagon body with the convertible top. It will go to the highest bidder with No Reserve. That’s an amazing opportunity.
You can look over a portion of the inventory for the GAA Classic Summer Auction here at this link. There is still time to get a bidder’s number, too. You can place your bid in person, by phone or remotely on your computer. Click here to register.

1962 Plymouth Belvedere
You won’t find another 1962 Plymouth Belvedere 2-Door Post like this one. When you view the video walk-around done by Unique Classic Cars you will be amazed by the smooth body lines and nice panel gaps. It is such a unique car that you need to see it in video to get the full impact of how well the light surrounds and front grille look. It has the 440 ci V8 under the hood and a push button automatic transmission. They describe the warranty plan that is included in the purchase price. Nice touch.

Collector Cars with Low Miles
1996 Chevrolet Impala SS
LoVanguard Motor Sales has a 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS that is almost new. They tell us it has only 3,608 original miles. (Not a typo.) They really show you all of the sheet metal up close in their video presentation. Take a look at the Dark Green metallic paint (optional color for this car.) Chevrolet brought back the Impala SS powered by a 260 hp 5.7L LT1 a few years back (actually 27 years ago now.) It was born to be collectible. Watch the video to see a test drive and go over the undercarriage on a lift. Now this is the way to do a video inspection.

2007 Jaguar XK Coupe from Houston, TX, 45k miles

Project Vehicles for Restoration

1966 Ford “Mustero”
Back in 1966 Ford came up with the idea of making a Mustang pickup truck which they called a “Mustero,” i.e. Mustang Ranchero. Today this 1966 Ford “Mustero” is being offered for sale by a West Virginia seller. 50 of them were produced, but they were more expensive than the Ranchero and did not sell well at the time. You could buy a Mustang for $2,500. The cost of the conversion to “Mustero” was $4,000. Today only four of them are known to exist. And this one has become famous as the project car that has not been finished. It has been referred to as the “rarest Mustang ever.” Will you be the one to restored it?

Deals of the Day
1979 Triumph Spitfire
One of the most interesting cars to be listed this week is also one of the most affordable. Here is a 1979 Triumph Spitfire 1500 Roadster that has been resto modded with extreme custom modifications. You’ve never seen a Spitfire like this before. Custom modifications include ’59 Cadillac tail lights, Camaro split bumper, custom console, hand-made wood dash, rear spoiler, BMW roll bars, custom header and exhaust system. This one has summer fun written all over it. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because the askiing price is $19,000. That’s a lotta’ car for the money.
1930 Ford Pickup
This 1930 Ford Model A Pickup was just posted for sale last evening. That’s important because you are one of the first to see it today. The Pennsylvania seller says it is an older restoration that still “looks great and runs well.” The photos will surprise you. So clean. In the ad, it says the Model A Pickup has been updated with distributor points and condenser. He says it is very dependable and will turn heads wherever it goes. It certainly is parade worthy. It will be our Deal of the Day on Sunday. The asking price is $16,000.
1956 Ford Thunderbird
Our newsletter readers know what we always say about first generation Ford Thunderbirds. “If you find a clean one for under $30,000 … buy it!” So here is a Goldenrod Yellow 1956 Ford Thunderbird roadster being offered for sale here today at a deep discount to the average value on these cars. From the photos, it looks like it would be worth having inspected. Take a look at the photos at this link. It comes with both tops, rear fender skirts, Firestone white-line tires, wire hub caps, and a Continental kit. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their price: $26,500. Hurry! 1961 Ford Falcon
You have to check out this 1961 Ford Falcon from Ridgecrest, California. Have the phone in your hand as you read this because the price is right on this one. You should have it inspected before you buy, but unless you are able to go see this one yourself, you may miss out. With a 6 cylinder 170 ci engine, Ford-O-matic 2-speed transmission, manual steering and brakes. They say it has a completely rebuilt 2-core copper brass radiator. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. I think you will agree that this is a lotta’ car for the money. They are asking $10,500.
1963 Chevrolet Bel Air
From the photos this 1963 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-Door Post looks to be a fair buy. The paint is a custom tri-coat which looks good in the photos. However you can view the walk-around video and find out where the imperfections lie. It has a 350 ci V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and performance Edelbrock intake manifold. The engine compartment is dressed up with chrome valve covers. The aftermarket wheels really enhance its stance. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $26,900.
1979 Lincoln Mark V
At first blush this 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V looks quite elegant in its Dove Gray finish with vinyl landau roof adorned with opera windows. It has a lot of power options, but the power sunroof is inoperable. Find out more when you watch the walk-around inspection video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. Their asking price is $18,900.

1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL
Although there are a lot of these on the market, a 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL stands out from the pack. It is being offered for sale through Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois. It looks so sharp in the photos. Click this link to review a walk-around video done by MCE. The contrasting colors, Mercedes Autumn Harvest Beige over Tobacco Brown, are quite striking.
