Classic Motorcar
Historians will tell you that some of the most beautiful cars ever made were built in the 1930’s as the country was just coming out of a recession. In those days Packard commanded a brand that was known for its quality and reliability. The crown jewel of the Packard line was the Packard Twelve. And if you wanted a special custom motorcar you would call on coachbuilders such as LeBaron or Dietrich to custom build your Packard for you.
Our readers are in for a treat this weekend as Ellingson Motorcars of Rogers, Minnesota has just listed a 1934 Packard Twelve Dietrich Convertible Sedan for sale. This fresh edition to their inventory hails from a prominent southern-based collection which owned this car for the past 60 years. Interestingly, the big Twelve is extremely well documented. They have vehicle registration cards dating back to 1934. In addition, receipts and invoices have been kept from the recent frame-off restoration. That was the second time it has been restored, the first came in the 1970’s.
Under the hood lies a 445.5 cubic inch modified L-Head V-12 engine fed by a single Stromberg 2-barrel carburetor producing what is said to be 160 horsepower. The V-12 is mated to a 3-speed manual transmission using the floor-mounted shifter the way it came back in 1934. For that era this Convertible Sedan is considered well equipped with special driving lights, dual sidemounted spare tires with side mirrors atop the casings. Notice the rear mounted trunk and the glass rear window int he soft top. Ellingson Motorcars tells us that the he chrome grille, chrome Cormorant hood ornament, chrome lights, trim and additional brightwork are all in outstanding, show worthy condition. It was all refinished in Meadow Green and Mint Green two-tone exterior paint. They say the custom Dietrich body on this 1934 Packard Twelve Convertible Sedan is truly exceptional.
Be sure to look at the photos of the interior. The front and rear bench seats have been reupholstered in lush Burgundy Leather and are separated by a functional crank up divider window. They say the woodgrain dash and wooden steering wheel are in wonderful condition. The dash is equipped with a 120 MPH Waltham speedometer, oil pressure gauge, temperature gauge, amperes gauge, gasoline gauge, and clock, as well as an optional factory AM radio and cigar lighter.
This Packard Twelve Convertible Sedan could be the center piece of any top collection. Opportunities like this don’t come along very often.

Studebaker Appraisal
When a Wisconsin collector wanted to know how much his 1950 Studebaker Champion Convertible was worth, he filled out our online form to have a pre-purchase inspection done on the vehicle. His purpose was to get it ready to sell, and he wanted to know what the value would be. Because it had some filler in the body and the finish had some chips and scratches, this car appraised out at a Class Three rating (the category where most vehicles fall into.) The filler was found in the usual places on these Studebakers. Overall the body was in good shape with no rust, and the driver quality repaint was a good match for the original Tulip Cream factory color. In its current condition it is a driver quality car, but a very rare one. It would be worth a full restoration. You can read the report to find out what we placed the value at.
It is a great idea to have your car appraised before you put it up for sale. We can help. Read some of our sample pre-purchase inspections at the Inspections Page today.

1973 Pontiac Trans Am
An Illinois collector showed his advertising savvy this week when he placed his 1973 Pontiac Trans Am for sale on Cars-On-Line.com. He used a Slide Show ad to show still photos of the car and then added a video to boot. Too many people get the idea that a video has to be a full-on Hollywood presentation. Not true. With this short video clip he showed the entire undercarriage of the Trans Am. What he wanted to stress was that this car is totally original. The red oxide primer is still factory orignal. In fact the TA still has its original exterior finish from the factory. Note the paint thickness gauged in the photos.

1970 Plymouth Duster 340

The tires, paint, exhaust, hoses, belts and wires are all still original. Take a look at the photos. The interior is like new. He says it has always been stored inside, no rust. It uses the Powerjection II direct carburetor replacement electronic fuel injection. The Treme TKO 600 5-speed was built by Keisler Engineering. Don’t just sit there drooling. Pick up the phone.

Deals of the Day
1969 Mercury Cougar XR7
The private party seller from New York just logged into this ad and lowered the price. So his 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible is now the best deal on our website this week. True, it looks to be only driver quality in the photos, no trailer queen here. He says it drives well with a 351 Windsor small block motor and an automatic transmission on the floor shift. He says he is the original owner, and that the car has 90k miles. So a pre-purchase inspection would be in order before you complete the deal. You will want to know more about things such as how straight the sheet metal is and if there is bondo. But hurry. This Cougar will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is only $15,000.
1953 Pontiac Chieftain
A 1953 Pontiac Chieftain 2-Door Sedan is being offered for sale this week. It comes from Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. They have been showing up recently in our DEAL of the DAY feature with a number of interesting rides. It has all its important equipment and a tone of chrome all around. If you look over the photos it does show signs of patina here and there. The interior is pretty clean. They say it is an older restoration with updated uphostery and paint, It remains a 6 volt with new battery, fuel pump and master cylinder. They say the Straight 8 has plenty of power. Click here to view a walk-around video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $17,950.
1961 Ford Thunderbird
You shouldn’t under estimate the impact that the redesigned Ford Thunderbird had on the new car market when it came out in 1961. Always innovating, Ford made the bullet nose 1961 Ford Thunderbird into a luxury sports car with tilt away steering column, a center console, swing out seats and a whole lot of other luxury car items. It was a personal luxury car for the upwardly mobile executive. This one is now for sale at Classic Car Liquidators in Texas. It has a 390 big block motor and FMX automatic transmission. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. Their price: $23,999.
1992 Camaro RS Convertible
This one is in the “future collectible” category. Who wouldn’t be proud to own this 1992 Camaro RS Convertible. It is being offered for sale at Classic Auto Showplace in Michigan. They say it is an authentic 25th Anniversary edition Camaro with the badges to prove it. Someone did a performance restoration on it some years ago and it looks really nice. It has a 383 ci motor, according to the ad copy. Click here to watch a walk-around video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. I think you will agree that this is a lotta’ car for the money. They are asking $19,500.
1988 Jeep Cherokee Laredo
Some people like to say that it was the Jeep Cherokee that launched the suburban Sport Utility movement. Whether that’s true or not it is significant that every driveway in the suburbs seemed to have a Jeep Cherokee in it. Here is a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Laredo that will serve as well off the road as on it. It is being offered by Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois. Take a close look at the photos and you will see why we think this is our DEAL of the DAY choice for Wednesday. The asking price is $14,900.
1963 Ford Fairlane
A drive quality 1963 Ford Fairlane is for sale in Chico, California. The seller says it is in “great condition.” With a 289 ci V8 and a 4-speed it certainly would be an interesting one to drive. It now has the front steering from a Mustang II. This is not a show car. You should have it inspected before you buy. Photos and video will give you a better idea of what it would be worth. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. Their asking price is $16,500.
1969 Lincoln Continental
Sometimes there is only a fine line between a drive quality car and a project car for restoration. This 1969 Lincoln Continental is probably on that line. The seller who lives in Satellite Beach, Florida, says it runs and drives and stops. Other than that it has the typical rust that most other Continentals will exhibit from that era. He says the carburetor has been rebuilt and it has a reconditioned gas tank. Be sure to have it inspected before you buy. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is $11,000.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:

Sold Thru Cars On Line
Here are some of the comments from happy sellers who were nice enough to tell us about their experience advertising on the Cars On Line website.

Matt, from Indiana, had a typical challenge. He had a 1967 Oldsmobile 442 which was a rare early Track Pack car. He wanted it to stand out from the crowd of other 442 Oldsmobiles. So we told him he should add a video to his ad. Video does the trick every time. Sure, enough. Just a few weeks after adding his video to his ad Matt sent us a SOLD notification. “We’re three for three,” he told us. It was the third time Cars-On-Line has sold a car for Matt.
