The Forgotten Muscle Car

1970 Mercury Cyclone GT 429 SCJ

While Ford Motor Company was busy developing the Cougar as its Pony car for Mercury, the Mercury Cyclone, in its various versions, was tearing up dragstrips and raceways all over the country.

This week MS Classic Cars in Seekonk, Massachusetts posted one of the rarest of the rare, a 1970 Mercury Cyclone GT 429 SCJ. Ford was trying hard to give the Mustang Pony and the Cougar some “street cred” by shoehorning big blocks into them, but Mercury had been grooming the Cyclone to be a real muscle car that could play with the big boys. In 1970, Ford again modified the platform for the Fairlanes and Cyclones, giving them the size to easily make full use of the big block 429 motor. This fourth generation Cyclone is one of the really rare muscle cars of that era. MS Classic Cars tells us it is one of only 73 built with the Super Cobra Jet option and a Drag Pack. And, of course, it is a 4-speed car. Marc Shiliro, owner of MS Classic Cars, tells us, “This is one of the rarest vehicles ever offered from the MS Classic Cars Collection and truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!”

The Cyclone GT has 15,392 original miles, and is totally numbers matching throughout, he says. Its rebuilt 429 SCJ V8 was dyno tested with 527 horsepower and 599 Ft-Lbs of torque. It is fully documented with the original Lois Eminger Invoice and Elite Marti Report, both of which are included in the sale. “This authentic car was the product of a high level rotisserie restoration and the attention to detail is evident throughout,” he says.

You can view a full history on the car by watching this video presentation from MS Classic Cars. It includes a walk-around inspection and full review. The rumble of that big 429 is unmistakable.

Classic Car News This Week

GAA Auction Results

Results from the GAA Classic Car Auction in Greensboro are online. It was a pretty good sale. The Alpine White 1970 Plymouth Superbird, with the 440 ci V8 and a 4-speed, sold for $215,000. (Photo by Bob Boberg of eClassicAutos.com) This was the liquidation sale of the Jerry Smith Collection. That was indeed quite a collection for one car guy to own. You can read the results of the auction here. Collectors always like to see what the current values are on their cars. There is no better way to research those prices than to follow these auction results. We hope you were able to watch the auction with us last weekend. Ninety-nine percent of the collection was offered at No Reserve. Some of the prices should encourage sellers that this 2023 spring market will  be a good one.

Studebaker Appraisal

When a Wisconsin collector wanted to know how much his 1950 Studebaker Champion Convertible was worth, he filled out our online form to have a pre-purchase inspection done on the vehicle. His purpose was to get it ready to sell, and he wanted to know what the value would be. Because it had some filler in the body and the finish had some chips and scratches, this car appraised out at a Class Three rating (the category where most vehicles fall into.) The filler was found in the usual places on these Studebakers. Overall the body was in good shape with no rust, and the driver quality repaint was a good match for the original Tulip Cream factory color. In its current condition it is a driver quality car, but a very rare one. It would be worth a full restoration. You can read the report to find out what we placed the value at.

It is a great idea to have your car appraised before you put it up for sale. We can help. Read some of our sample pre-purchase inspections at the Inspections Page today.

1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Fuelie

It was called a “factory hot rod” when it first came out. Classic Car Marketing, a southern California collector car broker, just posted this 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Fuelie Hardtop for sale in the COL Classic Car Section this week. This one has it all … the Onyx Black finish, silver sweep and red and silver two tone interior that everybody raved about bad then. Classic Car Marketing says it is a “survivor … original … never been touched.” Even the paint is original. With only 42,000 original miles, it remains as it came from the factory. They say it is fully documented as well. The original 283 ci motor with Rochester Fuel Injection remains under the hood, and it has the original Powerglide automatic transmission, original chrome, original stianless and original interior as it should look. They say it is one of only two such original Fuelies left in existence. And this one is for sale.

Aztec Copper Fuelie Corvette

Among a handful of classic corvettes from 1957 which were listed by Mershons World of Cars is a rare Aztec Copper 1957 Corvette Fuelie Convertible which comes with a matching auxiliary hardtop. Click through the photos on this one. It is well worth your time. This one has won the NCRS Top Flight Award, and it comes with its original invoice and owner service policy from 1957. It is Aztec Copper with beige coves and a beige interior. The important numbers are listed in the ad description. It has the 283 ci V8 matched with an automatic transmission, and they say the fuel injection system functions flawlessly. Mershons says it is rare to find Fuelie Corvettes that run and drive this well. It comes with incredible documentation, including receipts and service records.

1963 Ford Falcon Sprint

Somebody with a car guy sense of humor really outdid themselves when they put together this little 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint with the Thunderbolt teardrop hood. I think you’ll get a kick out of this video done at Mershons World of Cars on this performance version of a Falcon Sprint. Nice panel gaps and fitment on the car, and the hood fits perfect. It has a 260 ci V8 under the hood mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. They say it is a blast to drive.

Collector Cars with Low Miles

1991 Corvette ZR1

Precious Metal Classic Cars out of Indiana just posted a black 1991 Corvette ZR1 for sale with only 8,978 actual miles. They say it is fully documented and comes with the LT5 V8 motor and ZF 6-speed transmission. They call it a survivor because of the low miles. It has factory electronic air conditioning. This car, with the Lotus engineered engine and performance was way ahead of its time. What a great opportunity to own a righteous time capsule like this one.

Muscle Car Clones

1969 Camaro ZL1

In addition to all the fresh Corvettes they have listed, Mershon’s World of Cars also has a couple of COPO Camaro tributes this week. This Burnished Brown 1969 Camaro COPO 427 tribute is gorgeous. That’s because it has undergone an extensive nut and bolt rotisserie restoration. And it has the GM Performance aluminum 427 paired to a 4-speed manual transmission. It even includes the correct date coded emissions system and air pump, plus 12-bolt rear end and 4.10:1 gears. You haven’t lived until you’ve driven a big block Camaro. That’ll get your heart pumpin’.

Deals of the Day

1962 Thunderbird Sports Roadster

Ford morphed the early first generation Thunderbirds into a mid-sized car for the young executive. It always had a trendy vibe, but when they came up with the special 1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster concept, they created something that would live in the collector world forever. The Sports Roadster with its tonneau covered back seat turned it into a big two-seater sports car done American style. This one in Chalfonte Blue with a turquoise interior was just listed for sale by Mershons World of Cars in Springfield, Ohio. It comes with a Z Code 390 4-barrel motor and 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission. They say it is so much fun to drive. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is only $24,900

1963 Corvair Monza Convertible

The red 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Convertible was posted this week by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. It has a black interior and top and equipped with an automatic transmission, the six cylinder motor and dual carburetors. The soft top is tucked under a boot cover. The hubcaps have the Corvair branding. They tell us it is “mechanically sound” and it certainly is being offered at an affordable price. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $14,750.

1962 Studebaker GT Hawk

Elegant and stylish was the way Studebaker’s Hawk GT was seen by buyers in America. The European styling gave it a cerebral Continental air as it had everything the Mustang had except the backing of a Big Three company. This 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk is being offered for sale at Cody’s Classic Cars in Stanley, Wisconsin. They have the knack of finding good quality collector cars at discounted prices. This one came from Arizona and has cold air conditioning. It was restored about 10 years ago. It “runs and drives excellent,” they say. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday because they are only asking $21,900.

1956 Ford Thunderbird

Beverly Hills Car Club had another listing this week that you should note here. This Colonial White 1956 Ford Thunderbird is interesting because it is only driver quality, but came fully accessorized for that period. It has a Tuxedo black interior and is equipped with an automatic transmission, V8 engine, Holley carburetor, removable porthole hardtop, convertible soft top, rear fender skirts, whitewall tires, and a Continental kit. It also has a Town & Country radio and fender-mounted antenna. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. You have to take a look at it because they are only asking $26,500.

1963 Dodge Polara Convertible

We almost overlooked this one because we thought the price would be higher. It is a 1963 Dodge Polara Convertible being sold by a private party seller from Michigan. We wish the photos would have been better. It looks like there are some possibilities here. Look how clean the sheet metal looks. The seller says it had an inexpensive paint job so it is just driver quality. He says it runs and shifts great. He says it has a new master cylinder, cylinders, brakes, brake hoses, gas tank power top pump, fuel pump, water pump and carburetor. Even the tires are new. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $19,999.

1955 Ford Club Sedan

Another interesting ride listed by Cody’s Classic Cars is a 1955 Ford Fairlane Club Sedan. It was the first year for Ford’s new look that had everyone intriqued. Born in Memphis but raised in Arizona, this Fairlane sedan has had an older restoration which still shows well today. The 272 ci V8 and Ford-O-Matic transmission runs out well, they say. Be sure to look at all the photos to inspect the chrome and stainless. There’s a lot of it on the ’55. Click to view a walk-around video and hear it run. Remember that this is not meant to be presented as a show car, but it shows well as a clean driver quality car. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is $19,900. What a great way to get started in the collector car hobby.

1974 AMC Rambler Classic

How many of these could there be left alive. A funky mild custom 1974 AMC Rambler Classic 770 was listed for sale by Shelton Classics in Mooresville, North Carolina. It has the Rambler 287 ci V8 with an automatic transmission. Shelton Classics gives it a condition review in their description. The interior also has mild custom touches and is an acquired taste. You can check it out in the photos. They say the engine runs well and was rebuilt in the last five years. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $6,995.   Now that is affordable.

Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
